This might sound a little obvious - but if ur gonna read up marxism u gotta start at Marx's 'Manifesto of the Communist Party' (1848). I'd suggest one of the newer editions with an introductory chapter.
Past that marxism/socialism is such a wide topic its hard to suggest particular books. Perhaps someone else can come up with a definitive book or two.
