29255, Tween and Sexy?
Posted by raool, Mon Jan-17-05 06:44 AM
I was watching on Canadian tv a show about tweens'purchase power
and how especially little girls are bombarded with sexy images.
I must admit I was shocked how some of the little girls looked.
What I mistook for 15-16 yr old girls were 11 yr olds.
They were wearing heels, tight and short clothing, makeup.
They were wearing sex bracelets with each colour representing a sex act,
blue for fellatio, red for flashing,etc...
I don't really have a problem if these kids were 15 or 16 but 11?
I mean, did they have get a chance to have a childhood? Do 10 yr olds need
dating tips? There was this store that sold push up bras for the junior set
and a bra for girls who will not develop breasts for a few years to come...

I mean, I think of myself as somewhat liberal but that show got me scared.
If I had a daughter, I would not want her tothink she is only a sexual
object.

Are the parents to blame? In a few cases, the parents had diverging ideas.
One mom mentionned her strict Italian education as the reason why she would
let her daughter enjoy her youth as much as she could, letting her wear
clothes that are not age approppriate. Meanwhile, the father was disagreeing.

Companies use what they call "age compression" to increase their market,
pushing non age-appropriate toys and clothes to children who want to emulate
their favourite stars. Who is to blame? the parents, MTV?

It'funny how the boys still look very young compared to the girls in their class.
Why do a 10-yr old need a t-shirt with the slogan "Boy Crazy" or with
house shoes with the word SEXY embroidered on them.

29256, If they make their own money it's cool
Posted by Nettrice, Mon Jan-17-05 07:32 AM
But the truth is they get their money from adults who agree to whatever they are doing or choose to turn a blind eye.

I mentor a 12 year old who always talks about how sexy she is. She has no hips or woman shape, yet, and just started getting breasts. I am always like sexy compared to who but I don't want to attack her, so I find other ways to explore the issue with her. She does not have any parents in her life right now. Who do you blame? Surely, not the girl. The reality is she could be someone's mother (she already has periods).
29257, I disagree
Posted by ooodjrueooo, Tue Jan-18-05 06:13 AM
Even if an 11 year old makes her/his own money, I don't think they have any idea of what they are doing at that age. This is when parenting kicks in.

As for situations like that of the kid you take care for, it's not right as an adult to let a child go, regardless whether or not her parents are present in her life. As responsible adults we must assume the status of role models for children in this situation.

As you are doing by mentoring.

There's no way you can blame something like this on a child, but we can show them toward a better direction.

29258, Role models can only do so much
Posted by Nettrice, Mon Mar-07-05 11:47 AM
Once the foundation has been laid (by age 5), young people are already exploring sexuality, especially via the media and society. I talk to my 13 year old "little sister" and sex is on her mind 24-7. What she does not get in attention/affection from her parents/foster parents gets directed into sex. Being "sexy" means being attractive and wanted.
29259, i've been thinking more and more about...
Posted by Fiver, Mon Jan-17-05 10:43 AM
...the hyper-sexualization of tweeners. it's definitely disturbing, but i think the issue has too many facets to discuss on the boards. PARANOID THOUGHT: and even though nothing substantial has been reported, i really don't trust rBGH's in the milk: could this have something to do with it?

29260, definitely...
Posted by zewari, Mon Jan-17-05 01:13 PM
the effects of rBGH in accelerating physical development has been substantially researched. i remember recently reading how Monsanto will no longer produce rBGH though. i'll try to find an article later on, but if anyone has one handy, please post

29262, the sexualization of children in society
Posted by zewari, Mon Jan-17-05 01:18 PM
see: music videos taken on school settings, "school girl" porn motifs, etc...

statistically, children are the primary victims of sexual assault, regardless of gender. the gender disparity becomes more prominent in older age groups

The sexualization of children by Europeans dates back to their cave days. The only new twist is the mass capitalizaton of it.

The approach to child rearing as groups is very important in this discussion.

29266, This is a deeply complex issue
Posted by insanejake, Tue Jan-18-05 03:33 AM
to some extent, what we are finding here is the re-sexualisation of youth. I mean, children start becoming sexually aware far younger than we would like to admit. And human beings as animals arent meant to start having kids in their thirties.....

Another part of it is that sex sells to adults, kids want to be adults, so the advertisers use sex to make them feel older....

A lot of it is shock value as well. I mean there arent that many ways left to rebel any more....
29267, Comments?

29268, the problem is the moniker.

as soon as something has a name it can be visibly exploited and catered to and for by marketing gurus. call it a tween or what have you. i was told seven years ago that the entire music industry runs off the tastes of 12 year old girls from wisconsin. they are the most dedicated dollar with a disposable income. what ever they like, will sell millions. and so capitalism swings into full gear. if you can make money on something, do it. the more you can make the more likely people will be to do it. it overrides good sense and we have no culture in america other than 'popular culture' which is capitalism which is a signal override of good sense scruples etc.

the trick is in the value system. which could be tied to one's environment. capitalism values the dollar above all else and as a justification to any means neccesary to attain it. and it's a self fullfilling prophecy. as long as people subscribe to that belief system.

what you are talking about is the conspicuous consumption habits of western imperial 'pree teens'. adolescence is an invented institution, like the tween and whatever else they wany to come up with. you could give anything a name to exploit it like jazz. as soon as it was called 'jazz' it could be exploited. i'm a 'morning', cater and market to 'mornings'. i'm a 6th minute, cater and market to '6th minutes'. i'm a non ovo pescatarian, cater and market to non ovo pescatarians etc.

i have a lot to say about this at the moment because it's entered my frame of thought. i saw some cover story about the 'adults that never grow up' and their spending habits. i switched off the name for this temporary blossoming of culture in a cultureless culture to protect my moment from psychobable. so i can't remember what it's called for now. but it seemed another symptom in a system that loves to self medicate by describing it's spending habits and doing some 'retail therapy'.

'babylon eats it's children.'

and you can't run because the beast is hungry. vampires suck you dry. fool you into believing that you can't create your own energy and self sustain your own life force, or share amicably and altruistically. no now you have to steal your soul. you have to steal your vibe off of the others. it's a cycle. break the cycle by creating your own vibe. strengthen that vibe. resonate and harmonize with your neighbors and peers. imbue it with a strength that cannot be televised. they didn't televise the revolution. but they sure as hell played some shit.

revolution means "".

who knows how it's fought any more. get your guns. get your culture. get your knowledge. get your music. get your mind body and soul and change this shit daily. because yes, it is eating you alive. and it's after your very soul.

'don't let the school you..." said mr marley. what the hell is a tween but a cross hairs that politics can fixate on.

how long is it before kiddie sex is ok? it's profitable. the romans did it. the europeans were doing it all over thailand! it's messed up. and the soulless make the laws and change the laws whenever they feel like it...

"babylon system is the vampire..."

ok?

Manhood in general is suspended and Womanhood is defined not by the virtue, but by sex.

it's sickening.

29271, i don't think the opposite is better
Posted by raool, Mon Mar-07-05 08:49 AM
virtue to me doens't mean much really as I tend to associate it to religious beliefs. However, self-respect for young girls (and young boys as well) seems be lacking.
I don't think there is a need to revert to Victorian principles.

29273, womanhood shouldn't be defined by virtue
Posted by raool, Tue Mar-08-05 04:20 AM
it falls into the madonna/whore dichotomy that has been plaguing our societies for the longest time.
This is what I wanted to point out.

i personally don't think it's that big of a problem. but you need to educate this girl. so even they have sex at an age of 13/14 they don' get pregnant or get any std's
