Everything, the politics of the 1950's especially, revolved around the South's obssession with ensuring slavery was central to the union. And if not, they were off. Sure most of the North, not even Lincoln, were abolitionists, but to me it seemed the South got all out paranoid about slavery, especially in the new territories. Fuck economics, political autonomy, cultural issues - slavery was a central part of all of those issues for the South, the war was about slavery.
