the Ark is supposedly kept in a church in Ethiopia, it's guarded by a priest who is the only person allowed to see it. It's kept wrapped under several layers of cloth because it's supposed to have powers that are dangerous if you touch or look directly at it, only a person with a pure soul can look at it safely, which is why the guardian of the Ark is chosen for being free of sin.

It's his duty to guard the ark for the rest of his life, before he dies he chooses a new guardian from one of the young apprentice priests who is the most pure of heart to take his place.
