Christmas time 1974. 4 years old.
My family had just moved from the Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood (Douglass and Millard, near Roosevelt Road) to the newly interegrating Austin neighborhood (Central and Walton, just north of Chicago Avenue. any Christ Tabernaclers, Douglass Middle or Byford Schoolers out there?)

anyway, I awake to a loud crash of breaking glass and running outside. My folks run downstairs to a brick in the living room floor and lots of broken glass.
If any Chicago heads are reading, try to imagine the Austin High School neighborhood with scared white grocers, neighbors, restaurant owners, and gangbangers, still comprisiing 40% of the populace.

Cops come, write a report. My cousins (who'd just moved into the infamous Marquette Park) stop by to check on us. My brother (2 years old) and I peeking from upstairs. I can still see moms face and hear that police radio crackling.

Mom still has that brick, and Im glad she kept it,lest we forget.
