It's well documented that what you refer to as so-called "est- imates" were conjured up by Truman & were never supported by a shred of valid research. This is precise- ly why Truman created the "saving lives" myth subsequent to the bombings.

That's why there were other viable alternatives that could've been sought but Truman wouldn't hear of it.
Under Secretary of State Joseph Grew had explained this to Pres- ident Truman in person on May 28, 1945. Grew had been U.S. Ambassador to Japan for 10 years prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor and was reg- arded as the most knowledgeable on Japan of any U.S. government official (Leahy, pg. 274).
