21423, What Are We? Part II
Posted by janey, Wed Aug-30-00 04:14 PM
In Part I, some of us have been discussing the essential nature of "self" and talking about what each of us ultimately has in common. Important stuff, because we Activists can't go anywhere until we know where we are to begin with. Now I would like to find out from everyone what it is that makes you unique.

Okay, activists (posters and lurkers):

WHAT ARE YOU DEDICATED TO?
Helping children? The environment? Animals? Political action? Social change? Eliminating racism? To what "cause" have you dedicated your heart?

HOW DOES THIS MANIFEST IN YOUR LIFE?
Part time volunteer? Full time work? Moment to moment awareness? What do you do with your dedication?

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THIS?
What's the story behind it? What events or person or book brought it to your attention? What inspired you?

WHAT HELPS YOU?
What qualities of heart and mind serve you best in this work? Who or what, external to you, has helped you to perform this work or dedicate yourself to this goal?

WHAT GETS IN THE WAY?
What qualities do you find in yourself that make the dedication more difficult? Who or what, external to you, has put up roadblocks or made the path more difficult?

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SO FAR?
What lessons has this dedication brought you?

WHAT IS THE GREATEST JOY?
What is the best part of your dedication? What makes you go on, even when it's hard?

WHAT IS THE GREATEST SORROW?
How has your heart been broken in your work? What makes it worthwhile anyway, or is it?

WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING?
What nourishes you in your dedication? Where do you find your inspiration to continue? What do you do to prevent burnout? How do you nurture yourself?

WHAT'S NEXT?
Is there a natural next step that you see?

Know that by sharing your experiences with us, good and bad, you can make a difference. We are separated by miles and the anonymity of the internet, but we have commonalities and your story will support someone else.

Peace.
