12577, those darn t-shirts.
Posted by loryn, Wed Jul-04-01 02:05 PM
i guess today is "show bitterness toward capitalism day" for ms. loryn.

but this one isn't really about capitalism. at least not at the root.

i'm sure you all have seen them. those lame t-shirts that girls (and women too) are forever wearing. the ones that say the following:

cutie.
princess.(this one ain't too bad though)
diva.(the definition has negative connotations)
hottie.
bitch.(this one BOTHERS ME THE MOST!!!)
foxy.
sexy.

there are others, but it's hot and the names escape me.

and females buy them, thinking it's cute to call yourself a bitch.

yeah y'all, it's cute for little ten year olds (my little sister's age!) to call themselves "sexy". because they're soooooo mature at that age.

what is it with the media and their constant glorification and glamourization of vanity and shallowness?

all these damn things are doing is teach little girls that it's okay to brag and boast about yourself. why don't we have people (read: strong women of substance)teaching our girls that it's okay to have dark brown skin?

it's okay if you don't look like beyonce or britney spears?

it's okay to cover up a bit, and not go out looking like a "hoochie"? (i also hate seeing little girls wear halter tops....)
it's okay to be ten years old?

it's okay not to wear so much make up?

and yet we want children to stay children.

of course, it all started with barbie (another capitalist ploy!).

it seems as though girls are never taught (at least by mainstream figures) that it is brains that are important, and not beauty.

it is brains that will get you into a good college.

it is brains that will get you a good paying job.

and that it is NOT JUST BEAUTY THAT WILL GET YOU "A GOOD BOYFRIEND OR HUSBAND".

as for the "princess" phenomenon--i feel as though i'd be belittling myself if i wore one. i'm a queen, dagnabbit ;-)

that is all. i realize that i'm being incredibly chatty today on this particular board; i'm not usually. i'm just venting a little. there are more things that are bothering me than i thought.

is an excellent question.

you know what i wanna see?

(i don't know how possible this is but--)

a conference for young women with

ntozake shange(i had to, yo!)
bell hooks
lauryn hill
oprah winfrey
toni morrison
nikki giovanni
jill scott (i wanna hear her speak)
maya angelou
alice walker

and other women artists/poets/journalists/etc.

teaching young women how to speak, how to love yourself, how to love others, how to be an example, discussing the pains we have felt as women, how to deal with these pains, poetry/music/communication workshops.....

man, that would be sweet.

and unrealistic *sigh*

"I WILL PIMP BEFORE I AM TO BE PIMPED"

"NO"

"THIS MAY BE WHAT PLEASES U...BUT *THIS* PLEASES ME"

Yes indeed. It would be extremely sweet. I wouldn't be at it, of course (man that I am), but it would make my heart sing nonetheless. I sometimes look at the messages being sent to young women and I think:

Black girls need a new feminism. You ask the avg. black girl if she's a feminist, and she'll be shocked, whether she's conscious or thinks of BET video chicks as role models. So... I think someone should rise up and start a new movement among young black women. It'll be feminist in the sense that it will focus on making young black women think independently and recognize their inherent self-worth and demand respect. BUT it'll be called something different. I don't know what. I've been thinking of making this into a post, but oh well, you heard it first on this thread. LOVE YOURSELF, QUEEN! That could be the slogan. But I'm a stop making up stuff cuz this movement doesn't need a man to be telling them what they ought to do. You'll get full support from this brother, though!

i know--i plan to be apart of it.

hell, i already am apart of it.

maybe i can be the new millenium ntozake shange or bell hooks or something.

> You ask the avg.
>black girl if she's a
>feminist, and she'll be shocked,
>whether she's conscious or thinks

some young women (not just black young women) think that feminism starts with hairy legs and and ends with lesbianism.

if they read some of the feminist literature out there (like "for colored girls..." or a few bell hooks essays, and maybe even some joyce carol oates) they would know that this isn't so.

perhaps a neo-feminist book club would be neccessary. it would educate us about what feminism really is.

So... I
>think someone should rise up
>and start a new movement
>among young black women.

this shall be me and a other young black women all over the country that are making the same observations. i really believe that.

>It'll be feminist in the

i believe some men are needed in a feminist movement. not necessarily in workshops and conferences, but moreso for support.

women have supported men in almost every American war, every American movement.

it is now their turn to support us. trust and believe.

two books that i know of offhand: "to be real; the changing face of modern feminism" (an anthology that she edited) and "black, white, & jewish"

i couldn't believe it, when i first heard her speak (now i've seen her twice) because she was so right on about so much. she talks a lot about the way that people embody contradictions and having one feminist archetype that every good feminist should strive for is counterproductive and all kindsa stuff like that.

she founded the third wave foundation in nyc, working to spread her ideas and beliefs.

at first her mother about did a backflip when she heard what her daughter was up to because it was so radically different from what she had always believed and strived for, but i believe that rebecca is gaining the support of her mother and mothers' friends slowly but surely.

i think she was even voted one of the most influential up and coming young leaders (by who? when? i don't remember)- but to be real includes essays by bel hooks and danzy senna and a whole buncha other stuff.

you would be happy to know, too, that the way i found ntozake shange was by going to a rebecca walker reading that featured 3 authors, one of which was ntozake, who was *incredible* and talked a lot about trying to be a vegetarian when she was raised by a meatloving ghanan couple.

no vita?
no video-ho (upandcomingactress)?

why am i only coming up with rappers as opposites of the (i wanna say feminist but i don't know if they would all consider themselves feminists) spectrum?
and why are most of these females so closely associated with a group of males?
personally, i wanna see lil kim and 'nem on one side of a panel while queen latifah is the moderator with erybody else on the other side of the panel, and add Joan Morgan to loryn's list. the reason i want to see that is so those involved can maybe see themselves within each other...

because the music business is a male dominated business, particularly on the record label ownership and production side.

but that's probably only part of it.

many of the women mentioned above didn't grow up with fathers. for instance, little kim's almost unnatural attachment to Biggie (check her interviews) might have been because she did not have a father or a positive father figure to help her grow (yes, i do think that a father can help a girl grow into a woman....but NOT in the same way a mother can AT ALL)

i'm not saying that all women who grow up without a father end up like lil kim/trina/etc. however.

my dad once said that when he sees a girl dressed like a hoochie it's because there was not a man around to tell them that they didn't need to dress like that to attract men. perhaps he's correct.

Scary part is, who I see girls that age shopping with them the most? Mothers. Moms are knowingly buying their daughters this stuff a lot of the time. That's the problem, parents thinking: oh, it's just a phase, kids will be kids, she's just rebeling, all this sex talk is just talk, they don't actually do anything . . . Right? . . .

Yes, these mothers are pathetic. I used to work w/ three women who's kids went to private schools in Beverly Hills/Bel Aire, etc. One day I overheard them talking ('watercooler' talk) and one of 'em saying how she sold her Honda and bought a Mercedes because her son was embarrassed to be seen getting out of her car every morning. She said she HAD to buy it (the Mercedes), as if he was gonna end up w/ some serious psychological issues in the longrun if she didn't. And the other two women (I worked w/) were all in total agreement with her, commending her for being a good mother and ish. Another lady takes her 12 yr old daughter to get full leg and bikini waxes! Wtf??!!! I've seen this kid, she aint that hairy. She's your typical scrawny lil 12 year old. Hell, I can't even take a FULL leg wax (PAIN). Nuts, I tell ya.

That's such a wonderful image. I hope the attending priest took note. And I hope he brought it to the Pope's attention. Cause it's a symptom that shouldn't be swept under the rug. And if there's any Pope capable of addressing that issue -- it would be John Paul II.

Not like money is gonna change anything, but he has demostrated an ability to modernize the church. If that is at all possible.

i'm on the bus.

this girl about twelve years old gets on the bus.

the shirt was magenta and said NAUGHTY.

i hope that she is too busy trying to get A's in school to be NAUGHTY.

i was fuming on the inside.

whatever happened to teaching our young women how to be/act/talk/work/play nice?

ps--this whole post is teaching me that i am more of a feminist than i thought. that's all good.

...the girl had to be at least 10....and it said

BAD GIRL.

and her mother (who didn't seem all there) was right there with her.

why?

i know this one girl (i think she's 16 now) whose mother would drive her to guys' house so that the girl could have sex with them.

the mother claimed that it was so that her daughter could feel beautiful...she suffered and still suffers with low self esteem.

she already is beautiful....she has pretty ebony skin, full lips--but she tries to run away from her natural beauty by wearing blue contacts and weaves.

oh yeah, and she dances on soul train.

and her mom says it's so that the girl can start her singing career.

there are other ways.

it's called writing songs.

it's called singing in church and/or school choirs.

it's called savin up money and making a demo.

it's called shopping your demo.

it's called majoring in music in college.

i mean come on now. it's real sad when the mothers are teaching their girls how to act like this.

again, whatever happened to teaching our girls how to be REAL WOMEN?

12614, RE: those darn t-shirts.

Yeah i was at 6 flags friday and I saw a new one.
This 10 year old girl had a black shirt in silver fake-ass rhinestone that said:
SPOILED

I laughed my ass of when I saw that. I don't know if her parents bought that or what, to show how much money they make so they can spoil there child.
