This post should serve as a journal of sorts for all okps who have fasted and are fasting now. It's always good to record thoughts, feelings, ideas, etc. on a fast because you never know what you might come up with when your body is not spending energy on digesting food. So whatca say?!?!

10914, Making it routine

Fasting once a month is great for me (2-3 days). I tried a water fast a couple of times when I first started exploring my personal spiritualality but now I do juice fasts regularly for health reasons.

Of course water fasts are more hard-core and short term. I felt as if my mind was less clouded by garbage and I was more aware, less stressed. Water fasts made me sluggish and I slept and urinated a lot so this kind of fast is good maybe once a year, for 1-2 days, for spiritual development. I come out feeling very aware and open.

The juice fasts has helped me a lot. I suffered from chronic PMS-like symptoms and painful cramping that once put me in the hospital. The juice fasts diminish these symptoms, regulate & strenghthen my "system" and encourage me to eat healthier.

Preparation is key to fasting, for me. A couple of days before a fast I stop eating processed foods, including candy, chocolate, enriched bread and rice etc. I eat more organic fruit and veggies and the night before I eat a light meal containing the fruit & veggie I will drink during my fast.

During the fast I drink half spring water and half one type of juice (usually a mix carrots, beets, apples, grapes and watermelon). The juice is freshly squeezed or organic with no additives or preservatives. Drinking one type of juice keeps my digestive activity to a minimum. I break the fast with the same fruit and veggies I had during the fast.

I know lots of women who suffer various gynecological ailments and when they hear about my success with fasting they always express an interest but can't get with fasting. They see fasting as some sort of punishment or unhealthy/dangerous. I tried all the traditional methods and baffled all the doctors when the methods did little to relieve my symptoms. But fasting does much more for me. It's a process.

If I want to get full of a satisfying life I have to empty myself (mind, body, bowels and wallet) on a regular basis. Fasting has become part of my routine and I do it the same time every month.

"By emptying your mind of thoughts, you make space for new information, realizations, visions and dreams.

By emptying your heart of desires, you make space for peace and quiet compassion.

By emptying your belly of food, you make room for chi (energy).

By emptying your pockets of money you make room for riches."

What's empty will become full.

part of the reason I changed my diet was because of all the gynecological issues present in my family and in myself, so a lot of what you were saying I can relate to. don't even get me started on the PMS...I'm always telling people, "some women might use it as a crutch, but the shit is REAL...don't get it twisted..."

I'll probably join in the fast later this month. One thing that will be difficult for me is getting back into a schedule of meditation...I used to do it every day, but I don't think I could handle what came to me. Ever since then, I shut it off.

One of many challenges, I suppose :)

I skipped four meals, from sunday morning through monday morning.
I accidentally ate 2 walnuts! (i dont think that matters though)
I drank about a gallon of water, and had about a gallon of other drinks(orange juice, grapefruit juice, rice milk, banana juice, and a smoothie). Im not sure if I under-drank or not. I never really felt starved, like i expected. The only difference i noticed is that i urinated non-stop! Im not sure that i felt more energized in internally cleansed.

The next time i fast, in about 2 weeks, im going to go for 3 days minimum, 5 days maximum. I am just concerned to know if im getting the proper amount of fruit juices, and whether i should add some veggie juice or spirulina. I expect better results and will try to focus on my internal body more, and spend more alone time. Thanks to all the okp's who helped prep me for my first fast.

This is my first time fasting, and today wasn't hard.

Except for when I had to prepare meals for my daughter, that made me hungry as hell. It's almost 10 now, and I am craving some mexidips and chips from my local taco bueno and I have a slight headache.

Other than that, I am all right. I will give more details about what I am drinking tomorrow.

:) good morning

>>my daughter had people in whole foods crackin up at her face when she just smelled it.

you should see me as i pace around the table upon which that little ounce of green juice sits...i stare at it, avoid it for a minute or two, then make several attempts to just go ahead and down it before i finally touch the cup and drink it... i usually leave the premises as the juicer makes it and then come back with my nose plugged and a bottle of sorrel as a chaser...

...not taking any wheatgrass until i have my first couple of bowel movements so as to make sure it will all be assimilated easily (no sense in going through that much anguish if its not gonna be the most effective it can be right?)

T-six days till the fiery sword...my tongue is gonna hate me on that day...:) Good to see you doing good. Hunger pangs? i would go get some oat milk, an oat beverage high in fiber and "heavy", i used to have them for "dinner" along with a soymilk shake...

i haven't gotten hungry yet...i figure that'll come in about two weeks...

Yeah the stuf is nasty as hell, but it's health benefits far outweigh what you have to put up with for a few seconds as it goes down.

What I've done to make it more palatable is to take it all as a single shot (for god's sake DON'T SLOWLY SIP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!) and swish it around my mouth. During the swishing it usually gets kinda sweet tasting and then when you gulp it down it's only a second of "great god why did I just do that?!"

Some people actually like the taste of wheatgrass juice :o!

For me it's better to do it than not to, 'specially during a fast.

I agree with you wholeheartedly on that one. Let me tell you what happened to me last year. For a long time I did not dream and I could not understand why. Well anyway, last year I eliminated starches from my diet for two weeks for the purpose of loosing weight which I successfully did, amongst other health benefits. But what I noticed this time was that after either the second or third of no starches, I started to dream, day after day after day. I feel beyond a shadow of a doubt that this is directly related to the elimination of starch. When I went back on my starches, the dream ceased. When I went back off, the dreams started again.

Now, I know that eliminating starches is no where compared to fasting but it makes me wonder if the consumption of food or the overconsumption blocks our spirituality. I remember reading in Queen Afua's book, "Heal Thyself", that fasting eliminates blockages. Could this be what happened? and why would food block us from anything.

What do the rest of you think? I really would like to know.

Peace to all!!!!!!

most, if not nearly all of the foods in this culture are unnatural...i.e. man made, and hence faulty in design. add in the behavior in this culture to overeat and then throw in the tendency not to exercise and it makes for a imbalanced deficient human being...one incapable of "physically" living up to its potential because of all the negative attributes listed above.

i really can't get into the ramifications of how overeating impacts the individual...or how an overconsumtive lifestyle affects one's mental health, but suffice it say:

"you reap what you sow."

on a physical level, the basic physics of eating a S.A.D diet pretty much results in stagnacity of thought, rigidity of movement, and premature aging/damage/ill health towards the body. a characteristic of this diet that mst of its constituents exhibit is lack of self discipline when it comes to themselves and others. as far as the blockages; the storing of toxic substances in fatty tissues and in the blood, when released has the physical impact of fatigue and general ill feeling, so when looking at this one can associate the diet of eating unnatural, unhealthy foods directly with physical performance. the body doesn't need as much food as most people here take in so what people are effectively doing is clogging up their systems with unnecessary nutrient deficient "stuff" that just hangs around causing problems...this problem is alleviated/reversed through fasting...you start to combat and take back your body and restor it to its default settings, so to speak.

I ain't drinkin that Pipe Cleaner everyday. I'm only doing it once every other day. There's no reason to drink it everyday plus it I can't be goin' thru that ish everday. And after some further research I see that taking herbal and/or liquid laxatives (natural or not) everday during a fast is not advisable. Queen Afua suggests one should do it every other day, so that's what I'm gonna do. After all the queen knows best.

Taking enemas every 7th day which coincides with taking the Fiery Sword. Every third day is unnecessary.

I made the solar ICE yesterday. I made it EXTRA hot }> }> }> }> too. Bout it...

I'll see how I feel at martial arts practice tonight. May need to increase my spirulina intake for now because I won't be able to get all my vegetable juices until friday (hopefully).

four times ( and then 2 today). At least I know that all of this past weekend's food is out. Now it's time for my WHOLE LIFE! x(

The thing about it is you feel it go thru your stomach thru your intestines and out of you anus, every step of the way.

It's like senna except more effective and less irritable to your colon. It's also a kidney-liver flush. Got the recipe from the Queen except I added flaxseed. I have to take it tomorrow. x(

But it doesn't get "real" until it hits the intestines. Then think about how long the intestines are. Also think about a liquid/oily mass moving through the intestines mixing and loosing up solid matter. It probably won't be as bad tomorrow because this past weekend's food is gone. I could feel the oil sitting "on top" of matter that was in my intestines. It reminded me of those pipe cleaning solutions that you have to put in your drain and let sit for hours while it gradually mixes in and pushes whatever is cloggin up the drains down (hence the name). Hopefully tomorrow it won't be as severe.

You should always have bowel movements on a nutritional fast for cleansing. Without bowel movements you miss out on a lot of the cleansing. You probably won't have "much" though. Basically you are getting rid of all the waste still in your intestines.

some stuff loosens the sludge on the intestinal walls...thus you see black boo boo come out instead of the usual brown or green (what?!? you never had green boo boo? eat some large kale salads and watch :) ) plus some drinks actually have "fiber" or stimulate the peristaltic wave motion in the intestines, pushing out old stuff. remeber, your body has to get rid of waste somehow.

Question about...
The Fiery Sword*- Wheatgrass (1 oz), Garlic(1/2oz), Ginger (1/2 oz), Cayenne Pepper (1 teaspoon)

Which part of this is the ingredient that instigates super-detox, i.e. the need to put aside time to recuperate? Wheatgrass? I've become addicted to Odwalla Superfood, but that probably doesn't have as much wheatgrass, etc as what you're drinking.. I've also been having the green Naked Juice and whatever is green in the juice section of my organic health food store... a little every day or so, which is EXPENSIVE. When I get my damn juicer I can quit that ish. :)

BTW.. since I am only doing a 30 day fast, I am probably going to be starting in on the 12th day of the okp fast.. so then I should be chiming in with a diary...

if you're drinking green drinks you'll be straight. at least free of the taste aversion, so i think the garlic will "wake you up" and "light your fire" pure juiced garlic is nothing to play with, FOR REAL! the rest of the ingredients are easy...

p.s. please don't talk about the fiery sword till saturday, i'm scared enough as it is...:) DAMN! now i have that taste in the back of my throat and on my tongue. blechhh!

Definitely the wheatgrass/garlic combo. Raw garlic can be murder on the stomach. Some health circles speak against garlic saying that it is TOO strong (acidic?) for the body. The wheatgrass is also pretty potent but as whith anything it depends on your body. The ginger/garlic/cayenne pepper combo just burn the hell out of you mouth-esophagus-stomach (but I like that }> )

10939, last night was rough
Posted by guest, Wed Sep-05-01 04:13 AM
headaches and fatigue as soon as i left work...i'm starting to think i shouldn't be doing these push-ups, or whether its just the 3 day crisis that appens on the first three days...

interestingly enough, i was craving a vita-malt because the B vitamins seem to alway alleviate stress. so i go to the store grocery shopping with my brother (bad thing to do when fasting) and almost pass out while walking through the store...i'm thinking i need something sweet because everything i was craving just happened to be sweet. so i get this all natural passion fruit juice and by the time it hit my stomach, it was like my body sucked the sugars straight out of it and immediately into my bloodstream. my headache subsided and i felt good.

the person i was with was a chemistry major and said that sugar is processed pretty quickly and that some of my euphoric type feelings might be psychological (all i had trhoughout the day was water). also he mentioned something about low-blood sugar, which is something i've heard of people having as some sort of illness but never experienced myself...

one thing it made me remeber about fasting is that you can play around and experiment with your body being that you assimilate anything put in very quickly and without the dilution of other stuff in your intestines. it makes for easy trails and tests that you want to perform on yourself to see the effects of certain substances...

i'm going to test out kava kava, and st. johns wort later on...

10940, low blood sugar...
Posted by dispatriot, Wed Sep-05-01 07:30 AM
The weird thing about low-blood sugar... you would think to supplement it by ingesting more sugar. But there's a paradox here. Low blood sugar comes from the body not producing enough of it's own insulin, but if you counter that by giving it sugar, the body pulls back on insulin production even less, which results in hypoglycemia (erratic changes in blood sugar levels due to body's confusion on how much/when to produce insulin) to diabetes (low---> no insulin production in the body.)

What I've read (I'm not sure what I think about this) but in a long term sense, the best way to deal with low blood sugar is to starve the body of sugar so it figures out it needs to produce it's own insulin, and eventually your blood sugar will normalize. I was hypoglycemic for a while-- I would be exhausted if I didn't eat, and you would see me transform in under 5 minutes== raving bitch who needs sugar NOW-->passed out, can't move on the floor. Too sleepy/wiped to even talk or make decisions.. it SUCKED. (In addition to being anemic... I was a BAD vegetarian.) This continued long past ceasing the vegetarian lifestyle, because I was still intaking large amounts of carbohydrates (read: sugar). I went on the Atkins Diet (pretty much all protein, about 20g of carbs/sugars a day.. which is the equivalent of one slice of bread) for nearly a month. The first few days were a little manic, but I haven't suffered from uncontrollable blood sugar levels since.. have pretty much normalized, which is a relief. It's horrible to think every day MUST EAT NOW otherwise the whole day will be ruined and wrought with exhaustion/major headaches.

Last night was a particularly rough practice because people were bullishin in doing their stances and kicks. Melenga, our instructor, got pissed and made us work harder. I got through it though. In fact I did so well that he said he saw improvement in my stances, kicks, and overall stamina :-). However AFTER practice I was tired as H-E-double hockey sticks.

This morning I woke up an hour and thirty minutes late. I did not do all of the gates (opening exercises)but did everthing else. I was so fatigued and still am. I went to work at Delights of the Garden (raw foods restaurant). Fasting sucks!!:-( Actually I didn't have an urge to eat. I never felt hungry but I am very tired. I've just been drinking water. I need some juices for real! So i came up with a plan:

Everybody on okayactivist send a check or money order to ... (on second thought just inbox me :-))

I tasted a little bit of carrot juice (from which I licked from a container after I had poured its contents into a cup for a customer) and it was probably the best carrot juice I have ever tasted. I would have made some for myself but THERE WERE NO MORE CARROTS :-(!

Send money fast! :-)

I noticed you keep mentioning flax seed oil. What is the purpose of this when fasting? You also mentioned vitamalt. But I thought when fasting you only are either on water or live juices.

Also, I take vitamins but since I am only having juice will it be useless to take the vitamins since they say take with meals and juice is really not a meal at least in terms of digesting?

PEACE.

I'm still shopping for a juicer, getting anxious now because I need to get one before the next 9 days are up.

I saw this comparison chart online:
http://www.discountjuicers.com/compare.html

The "good" juicers are upwards of 150, and I'm going back and forth on how much I want to (can) spend. The cheaper ones say they can't juice wheatgrass? Why do you imagine that is?

And how seriously should I take this chart, since I know a lotta you kids are juicing up peels (wheatgrass?) et al in a $60 juiceman??

When i fast, i drink carrot, apple, and celery juice (to keep my strength up) and save the pulp. When i break my fast, i eat some of the pulp to clean out what ever is left in my system. Whew! That is pure fiber, let me tell you. Its natures Roto-rooter. I'm still trying to concoct a more appetizing way to prepare the pulp. Any ideas?

This is a great topic. I going to try to fast all weekend. I usually only fast a day, so this should be fun.....

Vegetable Juicer
Fruit Juicer
Wheatgrass Juicer
Nut Butters
Baby Food
Frozen Desserts
Mincing/Chopping
Pasta Extruder

..the specs are too numerous to name, but I've been thinking about going vegan-- at least for a little while, try it on-- after I finish the juice fast, and this model would be conducive to that, what with the mincing, and making bread from rice, etc... See more here: http://www.discountjuicers.com/omega8001.html

had bowel movement...it stank, which is unusual because usually its pretty odorless. i think smoke colon debris is coming out, or bile from the flax oil i'm ingesting.

going to take senna leaf (powerful laxative) tonight. perhaps a detox if i can find some money. feeling nromal, the three day faster's crisis is over, so it's pretty much smooth sailing from here.

stay strong. peace.

Completed my morning rituals and felt energized for the day. Until 3 pm that is. I hadn't had any juice since the night before. I felt kinda of weak but not like the previous day. I went to martial arts practice still but I did not complete the entire practice. We pretty much focused on stretching the entire class. Melenga made us do this one stretch for like 10-15 minutes. I could barely walk afterwards.

After practice I went to g-love's place to collect to fruit& vegetable donations. I shouldn't have but I juice watermelon and pears while I was there and drank which was around 11:30. Fruits are for the day not night. And to top it off I ended up staying there too long and got home at 1 AM ! That is a clear violation of my fast rules. Needless to say the rules are there to "protect" me.

you'll see why on the 5th day :-(

ain't no joke. it had EVERYTHING comming out of me . It took all day though. I had to go around 10:00 PM but was feeling it all day. Every now and them I thought I had to use the bathroom but it would go away. And then around 10:00 it came and I KNEW that was it.

I think because I have very little in my system it just sits in my colon absorbing into all the matter lingering inside (nice visual huh? :-)). Then that matter becomes loose enough continues its descent down especially with the water going into my colon.

However I think I should use some psyllium in the next couple of weeks to add some fibrous cleaning material.

I only had water today and Greens+(thanks g-love!) and I feel GREAT! I gott up this morning and did my rituals. I felt a little tired but then I had Greens+. By the time I went to martial aarts practice I had enrgy! In fact today was a particularly hard workout since we were doing endurance drills (punching/kicking a dummy and constantly moving around it). It was basically like sparring which is very draining. I got through still feeling good. However when I got home I got knocked out for like 2 hrs. But I feel good now and not fatigued.

Tonight I probably am going to juice some carrots, tomatoes and cucumber (thanks to g-love again!). I think I might add some soy sauce, cayenne pepper, ginger and cumin so it can be like a soup or something. I love live soups on a fast! :9

I still got some fermented pineapple and ginger that I need to juice. I gonna get shyt-faced tonight!!!! x(

11036, fasting over!
Posted by 360sunsumyea, Mon Sep-10-01 03:36 AM
as of yesterday around 10am. i was supposed to go all day yesterday, but i had enough.

thoughts:

the fast wasn't hard because i had plenty of rice milk and juice to drink whenever i started to feel hungry or weak. i don't know how people do this with just water, and i am not eager to find out. for me the hardest part was that at certain times of the day i knew i usually ate. i had to use some discipline to not do what i was used to doing at say, lunch.

i am now gonna be more aware of how much eat, and whether i am eating because i'm hungry or because i have conditioned my body to just eat at certain times

i want a juicer.

i think i will do this to usher in each season.

for anyone who plans to join this fast my suggestion is to not tell anyone you're fasting unless you know you are gonna have their suport and to pick up a book on fasting and the health benefits.

**********THE SIG**********

:) GREAT JOB!!!

i remeber the whole "lunch syndrome" too...the smells coming from the breakroom really started getting to me.

glad you are paying more attention to "why" you eat... i think we all should look into that in order to differentiate when we need to eat vs. when we WANT to eat...

i'm done with the ONLY water period...time for the fruit juices now...

you want a juicer huh? hmmmm....i'll see what i can work out...

congrats...for real! :)

I haven't read all of the previous posts so I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this particular fasting method. Has anyone ever tried the lemonade/limeade fast. It's amazing. 10 days of drinking strictly water and 8-10 glasses of a surprising good concoction of limes, grade B maple syrup, cayenne pepper and spring water.

There's a book called the Master Cleanser that explains the fast in great detail but each ingredient provides you with the necessary nutrients to ward off hunger. In addition, it is important to take laxative teas and do some salt water cleanses in order to achieve the best results.

I did it for the whole ten days but I know people who have done it for several weeks. I hardly ever felt hungry throughout the duration of the fast. It's definitely something I would do again.

I tend to agree with whoever said that they fast for 2 to 3 days a month. It's important to incorporate it into our daily lives. Doing a fast for ten days take lots of planning and it's honestly difficult to work and sustain the daily rountine while trying to do a thorough physical and spiritual cleanse.

That's my story.

Well, the book states that you should take a laxative tea every night and drink a quart of uniodized sea salt and water every morning...this mix produces some of the most intense toxic flushing you will ever experience. WOW!!!! The tea losens everything and the salt water literally pushes it all out within two hours of intake.

Personally, I don't think it's wise to do it everyday because after the first 5-6 of days (depending on the individuals diet and the type of liquids you're taking in during the fast) there's really nothing left to flush out....you can start stripping away at the vital stuff if you're not careful. I did the teas and salt water for the first three days and then I did again for two days towards the end of my fast.

I hope this helps.

Peace
11041, i'll be trying the salt water think tomorrow mornig after my enema...

Yes, I lost about five to six pounds. People who are overweight will tend to lose more with this fast. It wasn't a desired result for me but I couldn't help it. The fast itself made me feel good. I had lots of energy and more concentration than usual. My only problem was dealing with some negative energy from people around me who didn't understand why I was doing it....you know people trying to scare you and tell you that you're hurting your body when they don't know that fasting is a natural and necessary process which can be observed in various cultures throughout the world....but I digress.

11044, DAY 7
Posted by guest, Mon Sep-10-01 05:33 AM
drank water fro first half of the day...
then fruit juices (pear/apple/raspberry)

was having a so-so day, went to country (Macon, GA) to get fresh air. ATLANTA is dirty as hell, the pollution can be seen coming over I-75.

interesting moments: went to the mall there and a woman in this afrikan store complimented my crown while i was bent over looking at a bracelet in the display case. i told her i made it and she offered to work out a barter ( i love afrikans! :) ). so i go to my car, pull out about 8 crowns that i never intended on wearing and gave them to her...IN EXCHANGE, she gave me this BEAUTIFUL bracelet from ghana that she'd just gotten (she had just landed from a trip to ghana). this thing is AWESOME, i'd always been looking for a bracelet like this one, i used to think i'd have to have one made for me. and gett this, the design on it means "fire weilder"!!!!! (my mind exploded in a gleeful, yiiiiiippppeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!)

anyways...she also gave me a bob marley shirt too...and wants me to make more for her.

later on: i bought an enema kit and used it. inseting the speculum was a little weird on the first bagfull, but kinda cool the second time...

i'm definitly gonna start adding wheatgrass to the enema bag..and apple cider vinegar...would have done one this morning, but was running late...

soul veggie closed early, so luckily ( i mean UNFORTUNATELY ;) ) i couldn't partake of the fiery sword...boo hoo. :) i thnk the enemas made up for it.

anybody else have any enema experience?

(WARNING!- Graphic discussion on defecation is contained here.)

Water for the day and then some OJ. I also made my solarICE but that is for tomorrow. I wielded the Fiery Sword with success!! Although I should say there was considerably less garlic in it than I would have wished. Juiceman Jr sucks in juicing garlic.

I took my Pipe Cleaner. That stuff is TIGHT (not in taste though)! I took it in after an 1 hr everything just came out! Granted it was mostly water but also some little brown and green flecks that seemed hard (I could tell as it came out). Also some sticky like substance came out. It was like mucus or something.

I tried to do the enema but failed. Couldn't get the tube up my arse. And to stop it all off part of the enema bottle fell off and went down the shower drain. :-( Thus enemas have been cancelled from my fast for now. I want to substitute it with one or two colonics but it depends on the price but when I can afford I probably just get another enema joint. I'll see.

last night i took one.

kinda weird feeling when inserting, but got used to it...only thing is, after the water shooting out of my rectum, i think the pressure it caused brought on the large hemmoroids i saw.

hemmoroids are inflamed viens around the rectum...basically when there is too much pressure there, they may swell up into pea sized looking pimpples around the rim of your asshole...anyways, about 15 minutes later they were gone...

TODAY...i'm typing along and my stomach starts rumblimg and i jet to the bathroom and out gushes all sorts of shit...all i've had was orange juice and water.

i wonder if air got in there or what cuz it was a cycle of watery gushes, air and fecal lke matter, not onoe continuous stream but intermittent gushes...weird shit. looked in mirror (handicap stall and all) and there were thehemoroids again...

i think i have a sensitive rectum or this enema started something i might not be ready for...

LAST NIGHT: met my martial arts instructor, Baba Vita who is my inspiration for fasting...he is 50+ years old and is healthier than 99% of the men i see my age...and more muscular and flexible too...check this: he fasted for 442 days in 1998!!! for real. on fruit and veggie juices and water...he was in jamaica the whole time and had access to fresh young coconuts, lucky...

anyways, he trained for fasts just like i am...40 days... 100 days and so on. Solarus, he studied under Nganga since way early on before Mfundishi Bakari got there...but said that Mfundishi Bakari is definitely THE MAN. after taking lessons from Baba Vita, i plan to petition Mfundishi Bakari to move here since Vita is going to afrika in January, and i might get to tour with him and his students FOR FREE!!! once in a lifetime opportuninty...

anyways, training starts wednesday. time to get bout it! peace

seriously tho' on that coconut being the perfect food (and i hate coconut water) BUT it really is. u can drink the water, eat the meat.. oops that's a bad word around here, the jelly. if u let the jelly get hard, u can use it and make milk which is a must for rice and peas (is there a raw version of this?), use can use the outside and shine your floors, u can use the inside and make a container, of course u can make coconut oil which is good for cooking, hair (if you're a Trini) and body. it really is pretty amazing (or maybe we r).

**and G_Love if there was anything in that can that was crunchy it wasn't young.**

i saw some pose-up "young coconut juice w/ young jelly in a bottle here. "jelly" was as tough as rock, they just bought some diced coconut and threw it in there. i don't know who they think they were gving that to.

3 days until I start my fast, my today I began preparing by only eating raw fruits/veggies.. and nuts: almonds, walnuts, grapes, blueberries, an apple, 2 bananas, dehydrated tomato slices. (I noticed a lot of you are having rice/soy milk? is that allowed?)

I've been a little light headed-- only really got hungry around 2, had an odwalla superfood green juice and it went away. I feel really flaky subsisting on mainly fruit. :)

On a side note, I've been reading Fit For Life and have only had juice and/or fruit before noon for the past week, and have lost 5 pounds.

I think my juicer (the omega 8001) arrives tommorrow.

GEATEST DAY OF FAST!!! So far, anyways...

woke up, drank water, pineapple/lemon/apple...had a citrus celebration drink...oranges/grapefruit/pineapple/lemon...more water...

went to first day of kupigana ngume training:

first stance, "embracing the universe" while sitting in horse stance. i promise you, if you never thought you could get drenched in your own sweat while standing motionless, you CAN, and need to try this exercise! we held it for like 10 to 20 minutes and my legs started to vibrat all over. i didn't think i could stand still! this was an energy building exercise that should be done every morning of your life, says Baba Vita. i can see why. i felt way more energized after doing that excercise than from doing sets of squats...

we then went through two hours of tai chi, after opening the gates...and then ended by doing flips...tai chi and qui gong (breathing exercises) seriously develope internal energy, focus , and power. you can't cheat, you'd only be cheating yourself...

anyways...afterwards, i fellowshipped with some students and went home. we have students from so many disciplines who are teachers themselves, that there are like 4 classes going on in one.

did an "apple cidedr vinegar" enema...really got some nasty crap out of my colon...plan to do one every night and morning from now on...

I have not committed adultery

Though it feels like I've already started!

Yesterday was pretty much the same, an apple, some grapes/blueberries, greens, nuts, and two odwallas.

DAMN did I feel tired. And not from lack of sleep, but I felt though I'd been up since 2am, I don't know what my body was deficient in but I needed to NAP.

I got home and was about to crash out but I realized my juicer had arrived, hurrah! So my husband and I promptly ignored the instructions and started throwing everything we could find into it: greens, celery, carrots, bananas, grapes, potatoes. Wow, it was gross. My husband couldn't stand it, but I drank that ish up, and you know what? I felt wide awake after that.

I've got to start reading up, figure out which vegetable/vitamin I ate that woke my ass up. :)

Also! I bought a coconut and drank the milk outta it.. damn, that ish was NASTY. What were you guys talkin' about it being good??!?

I dunno, it was one of those look like they fell off the tree ish. All brown and hairy.

I read in some juice recipe book "power" recipes that had potatoes in them.. the most prominent thing about them is that they are _loaded_ with carbs. something like 50g per potato. (I had about a quarter slice..)

Ate more nuts, grapes, and a whole lotta asparagus. Realized I'd been drinking no water and started loading up, and abated most of my hunger-- after work went by the health food store because I was too hungry to juice, and grabbed some dehydrated vegetables, flaxseed oil, and a juice recipe book. Stayed out a bit late at Fais Do Do to check out Medusa and Feline Science and came home ravenous, ate more dehydrated veggies/fruits.

Felt pretty good all day, not tired at all.

11064, Day 1
Posted by dispatriot, Sat Sep-15-01 05:32 PM
Day of truth. Me, my boy and a friend got armloads of produce from the local ghetto-mart (produce for miles for only $10) and circled around the juicer as if in prayer. Mangoes, pears and bananas, apples and apricots. All swirling around in fruit harmony while we watched in anticipation-- it was already 1pm and none of us had eaten. We gazed hungrily as juiced dripped forth from the mouth of our Omega monster. Chopped up more fruit. Watched. Chopped. Watched. 30 minutes later we poured our amassed juice into 3 cups: 4 apples, 3 apricots, 1 mango, 3 bananas, 2 pears, liquified.

If filled only 2 cups.

Our eyebrows shot up quizzically and our stomachs rumbled. We divvied up the juice over the cups and drank up. I had some water, and got quite full.

My boy and my friend however, kept eyeing the machine, as if it might be hoarding a hamburger, or maybe some pizza. They felt gypped! All that time and effort and not even a whole cup of juice. They made jokes about McDonald's. I think maybe I won't have the support of these two boys after all.. we'll see...

Went to the Mumia Rally in Leimart Park, had an Odwalla...didn't stay too long cause I had to pee like a mutha. (It was only 5 min from my house.) Went home, went to the bathroom, and then immediately became ravenous. I ran downstairs and took about 10 minutes and made 3+ cups of juice with tomatoes and carrots and a potato and a small section of a clove of garlic. Couldn't finish even a cup. I think maybe it was the garlic-- I think I have low blood pressure and garlic is supposed to lower your blood pressure even more, and I got REAL sleepy. I had some banana puree (does banana NOT juice??) and was about to pass out. I've been sitting here about 15 minutes and feel somewhat better. I remember my dad used to take garlic pills on the regular until he started fainting.. mental note to self: no more garlic juice.

Side note: last night was EVIL. I think it was the garlic, but I felt like throwing up. I couldn't even bring myself to drink water. Ugh. I craved bread, thinking it would slow my stomach down enough to feel better...Went to sleep early.

This morning-- had Odwalla green juice and went to pottery class (yum). Then went to Wild Oats health food market and was IMPRESSED. An ACTUAL supermarket with a decent organic produce section-- loaded up on ish! Made mango-ginger-papaya-brocolli-yam juice and nursed that most of the day, then made some more mango-papaya-strawberry juice for dinner. Feel really good today, lots of energy.

NEED TO START EXERCISING. Still working on that.

Have lost 8 pounds since last Friday. (About a pound a day, so far.. weight is at 152 now.)

OH! Can anyone recommend a good juice fasting book?

11066, WAY TO GO!
Posted by guest, Mon Sep-17-01 02:53 AM
about the small amounts of juice...get about 5 large red delicious ORGANIC apples and one lemon...they juice well..and have high water content so as to make it seem like they are worth the effort...

i have not used my juicer yet...been going to juice bars (yes, i'm a baller! :) ) but what i can tell you is that strawberries, pineapples, oranges, bananas, and such textured fruit do not really yield "juice" more like a frothy smoothy like liquid...thus seemingly less. although "starwberry/pineapple" is great! try it.

excercise is key, get some strething and light aerobic...walking in the sun once a day is minimum for me...

days 1-3 are the hardest, after that you can go indefinitely, no problems whatsoever. the third day is the test...

buy apples, carrots, celery (good for fatigue, like a juice gatorade) ginger, pears, lemons, lemons, lemons! juiced whole!

the juiceman's book is good for fasting...he basically just gives a whole bunch of recipes. what you might want to do is get a chart of all vitamins and minerals like i did, one with the fruits and veggies where you can get the respective nutrients. Then pick one item from the list of foods that you can get the vitamin from and then highlight it...do this for all vitamins and minerals until you have a comprehensive list...anything that appears twice, use it for both requirements...i.e. vitamin a in carrots and so is vitamin c, thus you juice a carrot to provide for both sources...ultimately you will wind it down to a few items the you NEED to juice a day and consume just that...

also, for the tiredness...get some "jamaican roots" drink if you can handle it :) it's strong! but powerful...maybe a natural multi-vitamin too...

keep on, for one more day!

Thank _you_ for _your_ support. *hug*

Yield has gotten better the more I do it... dunno why, guess we picked the wrong stuff first time around. :) I have been using apples, also got a huge bottle of organic apple juice to mix with in case I got to lazy to juice for a whole thermos/on the go.

Haven't tried lemons, tho, will pick some up this week.

Where would I acquire a chart like this..? Sounds like a plan. Most of the reason I wanted a _juice fast_ book in particular was to make sure I got all the vitamins I needed and didn't get deficient in anything.. I hate/can't take pill vitamins, so I got to get it in my juice. :)

what's jamaican roots and where do i get it?

Akwaaba

I'm still in the game although the past 7-day period was the lowest point of my fast. I didn't do my exercises as scheduled nor did I wake up early, etc. I even stopped drinking water as regularly. On the plus side I NEVER felt fatigued even though I was drinking primarily water and exercised (on ocassion). ALthough "things" happened last week that "brought" my spirits down. But let me say one thing: I can take relief through the fact that my landlord is out of the country and probably won't be able to get back in for another few weeks. I wrote a bad check to pay rent and it won't be cased until he gets back :-).

Oh yeah have I said DC sucks lately? Well it does...and so does Howard (as of this coming friday they will owe me THREE paychecks, let's see if they pay me this time). x(

in this book, it says that three days is like the minimum for a water fast. on day three, the body starts feeding off fat reserves and you begin to free the toxins stored inside them...

woke up and drank pineapple/apple/lemon...water...coconut...fax seed oil...

went to practice...because power went out on the block, practiced sparring in the dark, stretcehd, and did flips (finally did a one-arm pirouette style back flip, this weekend i should be able to do a two handed one! my teacher is awsome!)

g love, i got a machete, and this will be my weapon of chioce...i used it to open a coconut and it was easy. kinda sharp and although i know i could take my hand off if i slip, i don't worry about that...But i will be training with a small sword about that size in class, and then walk around the hood as the underclass superhero, "New York Ninja Afrika uddha Boy" !!! *cues afrikan drumming theme song* :)

coconuts are tight! and so are enemas. i did one and saw some pretty gross stuff come out...

'm noticing my abdomen shrinking, and as a result of all the ab work and srength training in class, have noticed (as have others) the growth and presence of muscles on my body that i've never even seen before...

also, for the first time i was able to sit with my legs spread and reach towards one foot and touch my head to my knee! this was the result of stretching my teach er had us doing where we'd stand against a wall and he'd lift our other leg as high as it could...mine went above my head (which is why i'm sore now and can barely walk)...the stretching is really cool. it really tones the body.

anyways, yesterday was great...felt good. enjoy being around fellow students at training...

i gotta find the info on it...but basically, the honey a beemakes is made to sustain a bee, not a human. much like cow's milk is meant to sustain a cow, not a human being. honey, somewhat like white sugar robs the body during the process of digestion of certain enzymes...maple syrup would be better. it contains the spectrum of B vitamins and is from a plant. honey is not vegan...

How the hell am I supposed to go raw when I can't stop thinking about pizza?? and top it off, got home after working out in the gym for 45 min and found my roommates devouring a pizza, asking "do I want any." Grr. Also wanting: rice, toast, ramen, chicken pesto sandwich a la wolfgang puck.

Meat and tons of bread/grains. What's UP with that.

Had carrot juice, lemons, mango, cherries.. more superfood drink. Bought a tray of wheatgrass today and had some of that. Bought the Juiceman book, have yet to read it.

Normal tired-- except at the gym, I had TONS of energy. I walked/ran for 20 minutes.. about the time I usually fall out, all wheezy and ish, I just stopped cause I felt like seeing what my boy was doing. I could've kept going for a loong time. Interesting. Especially since a couple days ago I slept for like 14 hours.

I have so much admiration for you and I wish you can tell me how you are able to be so disiciplined.

Everyday, I say I will fast but then I think about the Southern biscuits in the cafeteria or the delious burittos at Burritoville. I drink about 32oz of water in place of lunch but when lunch time is over there is this thing in me that feels incomplete if I did not eat.

You know whats funny, I am not eating out of hunger but more out of habit, and to fill some kind of void that I just can seem to find what it is. I think it's more out of habit.

Do you ever get this feeling and if you do how are you able to overcome it????? I am sure I can do this but I would be very miserable just constantly thinking about something I think I should have.

Akwaaba

You have years of conditioned eating that you have to overcome. I've been in the vegetarian game for 8 years and its only been the past 3 years that I have taken a more informed role on how to eat properly. And let's not even get into the art of fasting. I still haven't gotten that down like I want to. Time, practice and patience will get you out of that loop. You have to REcondition yourself to think that the way you WANT to be IS natural and anything else isn't.

Therefore in the long run when you (and dispatriot) see cheese/meat/cooked pizza, chicken, beef, tuna sandwiches, etc. your urges will remain unaffected just like your urges would remain unaffected if you saw a jacket or telephone. You don't see a jacket or telephone as food therefore you wouldn't become hungry so if you don't see unhealthy edible items as food then you won't become hungry either. It also helps if you have one of those foods and become sick after eating it creating a taste aversion to it. That is the easy way out and requires less discipline but hey it works. I know of several starchy foods that have done this to me but none have been actual meat. However i don't even see meat as food so i don't get hungry or urges around it.

The only thing that could still remain as problems are the smells (as some meat dishes could possibly be vegetarian dishes as meats are usually seasoned to taste like vegetables) and SEEING PEOPLE EAT meat. It is not the "meat" that makes you hungry but rather SEEING PEOPLE EAT, that ultimately makes you hungry. However when this happens you will then daydream about wonderful piece of mango you had last week, the delicious solarICE that you drank in the morning, the seaweed salad you had for yesterday's lunch, or RAW VEGAN pizza you had for dinner last night.

keeping me up with my discipline:

although I KNOW I need to detox, cause my digestive system is effed up.... the biggest reason that keeps me doing this is the very tangible result of losing weight. I need tangible day to day stuff I can point to that says I am progressing towards a goal. I think most of my excess weight is due to improper digestion and faulty metabolism-- I can eat almost nothing and gain weight. My boy is doing it to try and give his body space to clear out his lungs from years of smoking. My friend is doing it for general detox only.

As far as the reconditioning-- I agree to some extent, but I think I am craving carbohydrates for a reason.. there is a common denominator in most of what I'm craving which makes me think I'm either not giving my body something that it needs, or, my body is overcoming an addiction. Physiologically, not entirely psychologically.

And chyne.. anytime that I want food-- I just gulp down juice. I have a bottle of something next to me at all times, I drink when I'm not hungry, so I won't ever _get_ hungry.. if I had come home after the gym and been HUNGRY I think I would've died. :) I'm playing into my oral fixation by drinking 24/7....

11110, RE: COLONIC! COLONIC!

I don't mean to contradict you but I did not find colonics much help. I did three and still felt constipated.

The best results I had in my life was when I eliminated carbs from my diet for two weeks. (Oh God, how I wish I had the disicpline to do that for at least 2 months) In this time I eliminted so well and fully. I also noticed that I did not have the usual odour that I normally would have.

I you tell nothing but nothing produced the results I got from eliminating starches from my diet.

The only other thing that also did a real cleaning of my colon was psyllium. I tell you the first week I took that stuff, I could not believe what was coming out of my body. In fact and I hate to be so graphic, but in the excreta something looked like and felt like a plastic substance and I still keep wondering to this day what that was and how could it have gotten into my body. In fact the psyllium really scrubs the intestinal walls because when the feces comes out it even takes the shape of the intestine which goes to show all the crap thats stuck to the walls of the colon and how they stay in the body for years and years due to ingnorance and poor eating habits.

But the most effective thing was getting rid of carbs.

Peace!
11111, Getting rid of starches
Posted by Solarus, Fri Sep-21-01 05:48 AM
Akwaaba

Or more specifically "mucoid-forming" foods is the key. Soy technically is not a "starch" but still is mucoid-forming. That ultimately is what will sustain you in the long run. A colonic is just a temporary clean out and not meant to have a long term effect independent of one's lifestyle.

For instance, iover the stoves in restaurants are these vents that suck up the smoke that derives from cooking food. In restaurants where meat is cooked, these vents have to be cleaned at least twice a month and in some really heavy "meateries" FOUR times a month. Now the cleaning process does not stop the vents from getting a buildup of "gook" (which consists of smoke, dirt, cooking oils and animals fats), all it does is CLEAN it.

Now in vegetarian restaurants the buildup is nowhere near as much. The level at which the vents need to be cleaned is decided by the health dept. Vegetarian joints don't reach this level till at least a month or a month and a half. I know the one I worked at didn't reach for at least two months at a time.

So as you can see a colonic only works at eliminating the current buildup but it does not solve the CAUSE for a buildup. A colonic can help prevent constipation only by cleaning the colon to an extent that the current food in digestion is more able to come out because of less buildup in the colon. However the whether or not the food is mucoid-forming will be the ultimate key.

Everything you said makes a lot of sense and I never thought of it this way.

However, as I said, if one is eliminating properly and fully from the elimination of starches, then is a colonic necessary????

NO, a colonic is not necessary. However colonics are often suggested to anyone who has experienced the S.A.D (Standard American Diet) at any point in their lives. There is so much gook in there that is hard to get out that a colonic can be very helpful in cleaning. I want to do at least one soon. (I'm a virgin :-))

Wow, I haven't posted in a while. I suck.

Ok... Need to kick my ass, drink more water, more veggies. It's weird, but I almost feel like I can't drink half the stuff I'm trynna put in my body. I had a small glass of tomato/carrot/pepper juice and could drink about a sip of it. My appetite has dropped considerably. Not hungry at all. I think my weight loss is slowin a little bit.

Now that that's outta the way.

I'm GOING TO DIE. I NEED PIZZA. PLEASE HELP.

Seriously, yo, I was at Vons going to pick up an Odwalla (I can't seem to stomach the ish I make these days) and I was about 2 seconds separated from bustin' my husband's ass and climbing through him to little caesar's.

W! T! F!

I don't know that I can make it through all 30 days. What IS this sht. I don't even LIKE pizza!!!!?!

My husband's going through the same, but he's an angel and tied me to the car passenger seat when I tried to break then and there. He's bein' all strong for me. Aww. :)

Ok. So yell at me and tell me what a p*ssy *ss b*tch I am so I won't quit.... PLEASE. NOW. S.O.S. I'm at the point where I'll feel real good if I get through day 10, and that will give me enough reason to let myself quit. This is seriously getting to me.. being distilled to only the incessant thought of "MUST EAT CRAP NOW" is really degrading.

that cravings for foods you haven't had in a while...and don;t even like are the result of toxins being released into the system, triggering cravings...toxic substances can be stored in fat...when that fat is being used (burned) for energy like during a fast, the toxins produced by eating those foods you crave are passed back into the bloodstream thus sparking the "memory" of how that food felt back then and the cravings you feel now...

about staying on the fast, you probably won't make it...i say this for a couple of reasons. 1) you don't seem like that disciplined an individual at all...i mean, for real, had you not seen others doing the fast you woudn't have done it yourself. you're sad.

2) you're a woman, and i have YET to see a woman that could stop eating for more than 2 weeks. women in this culture really don;t have any discipline at all. and why should they, verything is handed to you all based on your looks and charms, so actually DOING something using your own internal energy and will is unnecessary for you all to survive. think about it, most of the fasters, ascetics, etc. are MEN who have decided to test their will and body to achieve new hieghts in their spirit. Women just don't do that! Just look at the number of men in this post fasting for long periods compared to the number of women who can't last 3 days! Most of yall already have in the back of your minds that you can fall back on that "time of the month" excuse that is used so much, whether to get out of work or to gain favors...Physically you are too weak to fast, mentally lack the will to sustain the discipline it takes to fast, and spiritually undeveloped to actualize "mind over matter". Persoanlly, i'd be surprised if you made it another day.

After you go eat that pizza, let this resonate through your mind:

"You're GROSS! And all that fasting was wasted over a slice of greasy shit!"

you're sad, DO BETTER, TRY HARDER...

I'm not sure whether you truly are this resentful against the feminine of the species, or you really are that good-- you don't have to be the martyr for my cause, i.e. make me defiant in spite of you. :) However, I'm still encouraged to prove you wrong, so it works either way.

At any rate, prior to reading your post, I decided to only drink water today to get myself over this hump-- what you said about toxins of what you ate being released into your system makes sense, and only further encourages me on my plan to water fast today. It makes sense because I'm not really hungry or craving food in general. I work right next to the kitchen at work and it doesn't phase me. Most of my old diet was carbs & dairy, ramen, pasta, bread, etc, so craving a greasy ass pizza makes sense towards that end. The perfect combination of crap food from what I've been consuming.

re: no self-discipline... 1. this is my first fast ever. :) 2. I've come across none of this information before okp, so making a spontaneous decision to eat raw/vegan/juice fast/etc would never really occur independent of discovering the information as to _why_. I don't think I would be incorrect in saying that you are following the beneficial example of others that came before you. 3. You don't know me. :) I see you as an intelligent person who is on the path, and I respect that. I'd appreciate that you'd do the same. 4. re: being a ubdisciplined _woman_-- again, you don't know me. :) I refuse to qualify that with a response. :)

Shrug.. her reaction is independent of being female, in my opinion. As far as being unsupportive, let me tell you about my damn (male) roommate(!)

Leaves pizza boxes on top of my organic produce in the fridge. Tells me (and husband) I'm insane and/or stupid for doing this fast, that there's no health reason whatsoever to do it. His western acupuncturist said he can find no reason to do it other than spiritual reasons, so my roomie told him we were scientologists. (Because he thinks scientologists are insane too.)

Sigh.

11135, Fall Equinox Review
Posted by Solarus, Mon Sep-24-01 04:00 AM
Akwaaba

As we now enter a new season, a new time, a new cycle, I would like to reflect on a few things that I noticed about my body. The most profound thing that I realized is that nutrients, vitamins, etc. have very little to do with "energy." All of the following simply provide the elements needed for the body to maintain its own functioning order. This in turn allows for YOU (I) to be able to DO. "Energy" seems to be more mental and otherwise than physical.

It's like learning an internal martial arts style. Strengthening and conditioning the body is of primary importance only for one to be able to have an medium for one's internal energy to flow through. If one's instrument is not suitable for energy to flow through then the internal martial arts would be rendered ineffective. In fact this is the major reason why tai chi is considered a "healthful art" vs. "martial art."

At the beginning of my fast (1st 7 days) I was pretty much on point with following my regiment but the last 14 days were all but well. I failed to meet so many of my obligations that it was just pitiful. But of no money most of my fast has been relegated to consuming water, Greens+, spirulina, and various fruit juices, mostly oj but also mango, peach, apple, lemon and grapefruit. I've had very little of any green juices other than some parsley. However I noticed that overall my energy level has been higher as of recent than it was than the first 7 days when I HAD juices. As of recent, whenever I have been unmotivated or tired, it was usually because of a lack of sleep and extremely long days or my emotional state (no money, bills, and 9-11 Aftermath got to me too, DAMN sheep flying flags! especially black sheep like mi madre :-(!)

Oh yeah I also realized why i stopped fasting for significantly long periods in the thick of a school semester.

Remember this formula:
Fasting Student Formula
LATE NIGHTS + PAPERS + READING + WORK + FASTS = NO ENERGY!

I lost 23 lbs which is about 1 lb a day so that is fine. I hope i don't lose much more weight. I need to get back on my exercising that I have somewhat slacked off on. At least I maintained my pushups (somewhat). Well it's have way over. 21 more days to go :-)!

Oh yeah I've come up with a couple of more drinks and also some food ideas that I can't wait to try. I love fasting!

(top of the mountain)

coconut water, detox (grapefruit/lemon/orange juice & maple syrup) watermelon juice, celery/ginger/sunflower sprout juice...lots of water...cranberry juice/pineapple.

interesting parts: had fresh raw sugar cane...chewed on it and loved the natural sweetness...chewed on it in between drinking coconut water...i really need to live on an island for real!

trained three days straight. harnessed energy and performed a few power excercises. stretched and relaxed. changed oil on car, gave it a tune up, installed new brakes and rotated tires, pretty productive weekend.

feel pretty good. performed enema last night and watched a lot of gunk come out...really need to be doing this every morning.

memorizing the negative confessions proves to be one of the hardest aspects of the fast, well not the memorizing, but adhering to them...the second half of the list is really intense.

woke up incredibly sore from hiking yesterday.
went to capoeria practice and stretched, joined in some of the basic exercises..felt better.
drank lots of apple juice and some carrot/organge.
accidentaly put a cashew in my mouth but spit it out after chewing and realizing what i was doing! haha
stomach getting smaller, appetite little to none..i could go on for days, but its final.
i ordered a juice fasting book, and the weeks before thanksgiving, i plan to take on a longer program.
went shopping and brought back all kinds of deliciouses!
broke the fast with a breakfast of chopped apple sitting in a small bowl of soy milk, with granola lightly sprinkled on top.
mmmm, thanks be to the fast.
peace.

good job, was this your first fast?

believe it or not the 3 day fast is just as difficult as any longer one (to me anyways). i always have a hard time w/ day 3...don't know why.

p.s. stop talking about granola and apples, you hit a soft spot there...i'm thinking of applesauce and plums right now for my first meal.

You know, I'm fasting with my husband & my friend T....
T has an appetite for hot stuff (which I don't!) but we both share the same passion for wasabi! He sent me this recipe maybe some of you will enjoy.. cuz I don't know I could handle it. (My hub made a really interesting drink of peppers and jalapenos the other day.. these boys are gettin all rough wit it. :)
-------------------
2 stalks celery
1 bunch raw spinach
1 bunch green onion
5-6" length horse radish root
it is probably a good idea to juice the horse radish first in a clean juicer as you can save the pulp to make a good mild horseradish dipping sauce. And be careful, this recipe made me cry for about 30min straight.

things i hope to do this half:

more water
more green drinks(my main point)
more sleep
more cleansing of the mind
more stretching

Have you done this exercise in class? It's called "climbing the mountain" First you go up the mountain then you go back down. You probably won't though because this is an exercise that stems from the shaolin tradition. Basically you do a sequence of stances then you redo them to go back down.

11147, Day 10 ::: intense
Posted by dispatriot, Tue Sep-25-01 08:36 AM
Holy f*ck.

Well, I only drank water yesterday. Was doing pretty good, not hungry all day. Very introverted, moved quietly and peacefully throughout my day. At around 7+pm I started to get spacy, headachy. Which I expected much earlier. My muscles started to ache also. But the hunger pangs didn't bother me at all.

And I could SMELL EVERYTHING. It was crazy. The place I work serves lunch and I could smell the breading on the fish, the fish itself, the mayonaise on it, all separately. I could smell a tiny dab of rosemary/lavender oil a room away. My roommate cooked steak last night and from upstairs I yelled down: are you cooking steak? (yes) in broth? (yes)

I don't effing SMELL broth. wtf! It was intense, I loved it. :)

Then about 11p rolled around, the time I usually go to bed.. and I started to feel like I Was going to throw up.. I went to bed, and half the night I was tossing and turning and dreaming about food poisoning and couldn't sleep because I wanted to puke. For about 5 hours. I woke up and went to the bathroom and my urine was a dark orange-- this whole fast it's been clear! I only drank water so I guess my body expelled a lot. I also lost two pounds just from this one day.

I had a little bit of an odwalla super protein and thought it tasted nasty-- usually I love them things. It tasted too.. complicated. And I went back to bed for an hour or so, felt MUCH better. I don't think I can do this for more than a day at a time, it just kills me.

But I'm remotivated for my juice fast, definitely. I was much more calm, had much more perspective on what I was doing from the one day water fast (sans battling with detox sickness). I think I may try it again Friday, depending on what I have planned fri night.. because sleeping in the next day is ESSENTIAL. ;) The ish wore me OUT.

Sense of smell relatively back to normal. :(

But everything tasted bad! I had an Odwalla Mango Tango, and an Odwalla Protein drink.. both were just weird tasting to me, while usually I like them. Had my last juice at 2p and only drank water the rest of the day. Felt really good, not sick or headachy. Didn't lose any weight but urine is still kind of dark, so I guess I'm still detoxing. (It's been pretty clear when I've been drinking LOTS of juice.)

Not a whole lot came out, which is surprising due to my lack o' activity in that area since fasting. But I did feel much lighter afterwards.

11156, enemas CAN get past the descending colon...
Posted by guest, Fri Sep-28-01 03:55 AM
it depends on how you move your body while doing it. the last time, i got the water across the tranverse, and to the ascending. using warm water you can feel it hit corners and move to the different areas. if you're only getting water to the third part, then you need to clean out the stuff there until it can pass all the way through. it took me three weeks before i got that far.

now i use enemas in the morning to flush the toxins deposited during the night and psyllium husk at lunchtime. needless to say, my stomach and "pouch" area is totally flat. my family and friends say there is a VERY noticeable difference...there really is...

you had papa johns's? Half the time I think you've been vegan before you could walk, the other half I think you quit off that ish 2 weeks ago. :)

Also, I haven't had miso during this fast, but I LOVE that ish. LOVELOVELOVE. So good. The broccoli was cheating cuz it had soy and rice flour... it just happened to be in the fridge. BUT I was looking through the Organic soup section (you know em, those Imagine black boxes o' soup) and discovered POTATO LEEK soup has nothin but veggies and safflower oil. No rice flour/soy. AND it is the highest in Iron content, which is an added bonus in the war against anemia. :) I'll prolly be having that several more times while fasting.

I have to say I find I have more energy eating vegetables in the form of salads than juice. This seems very ironic since when you juice, you have more vegetables.

damn...is this shit EVER gonna end?

had various ffruit and veggie juices...one of which is called carrot calm, and is really, really good. extremely stressful weekend but with help of fellow martial arts classmate...i made it through...

realized how often people eat and focus on eating...damn shame. plus, realized that even though people close to me know i'm not eating, they STILL offer me food...over and over again. the shit is funny. people REALLY think fasting can't be done and adhered to. oh well...

hemmoroids acted up real bad as a result of the psyllium uhsk...i'm not taking that again unless i'm eating...hands and feet still bleeding somewhat from class thursday, and body is tired...time to really relax. tai chi excercises working a little, but need to practice how to breath and focus on that some more. time to break out this yogi text "Science of Breath".

spirulina, though unnatural in powder form :), is really a good energy booster. well...time to go train....

I have not behaved with violence

I have not caused disruption of peace

Over the hump, woo!

Me +husband +T were all riding in the car from Griffith Park and hus said "how bad would it be to just have a _little_ tofu right now?" And we just stared blankly and called him the devil. Cause you know we both wanna jump up and say, "oh, not bad at all, let's go at!!" But we can't... :)

Overall, pretty good, no excessive cravings. Been wandering through the aisles of whole foods and label-reading to figure out what I can and can't eat re: vegan. Finding lots o' goods. Found a book called Becoming Vegan, which dealt with how to supplement your body with those things you would usually get from meat. Had mostly apricot, peach, papaya juices, and that potato leek soup tonight (16). Not enough water, still trying to train myself to.. train myself/work out.

DID however discover there is a booty-crammin place right on my street. Will check them out this week. Whee. ;)

11169, 1st day of 7 days
Posted by Ornjekiss, Mon Oct-01-01 05:06 AM
Whoo! I started sunday, saturday I finally got my juicer, so saturday night I decided to get my juices toghether. I love my jucer I really do!! Anyway, saturday night I drunk a gallon of water, two tablespoons of castor oil, two tablespoons of olive oil, and one flaxseed pill. That is what my grandmom told me to do in order to get ready for the fast. Buy the night time I experienced the bathroom in a very personal way no need to expound.

Sunday morning drank 16 ozs of banana/apple/pear juice, umm, umm , good! Was full til after church. Lots of water, to tide me over to lunch.

More banana/apple/pear for lunch.

Dinner I tried to get creative but got my tastebuds hurt, carrot/celery/spinach/apple juice, bad decision. No celery, celery is bad! Next time I know better. Will be going to Wild Oats to get some Naked juice, for my lunch times. It's super green.

So far so good, had a craving for brownies this morning! I know the first 3 days are gonna be rough!

the mind is funny. i usually only eat dinner anyway (that's why the sunup/sundown fast would never work for me -- i always do that), but today i'm "hungry", because i know i won't be eating tonight.

its been about a year since the last time i fasted. that was 7 days, just water.

this time, i'll probably do 6 days w/ water, and possibly herbal tea as a cleanser.

peace & blessings,

Posted by guest, Tue Oct-02-01 04:15 AM
...actually only one of them...there are 5 main ones. caused by too much pressure on the anus while its tight...i.e. taking big ass psyllium husk shits while fasting. basically, i haven't taken a bowel movement due to not eating and whe i do shit (or do the enema) it causes pressure that swells the veins...

it doesn't hurt, but its just a little uncomfortable. the kicking didn't bother it...

11184, Day 2 - Waste Not Want Not
Posted by Ornjekiss, Tue Oct-02-01 04:05 AM
Yesterday was just plain hard. Everr\ything was cool til I had to come home. It just makes you upset when you finally realize why you do the things you do. Then you get mad cuz you been doing it for so long it is hard to change your attitude.

N-E-way, I had to drink the rest of that celery/spinach stuff I made the night b-4, cuz I was not going to throw all that good/expensive veggies away.

For lunch I had water, just water. I was fine.

Went to Wild Oats to get some h2o refills and some more Naked Juice. Aww stomach was killing me for some of the Wild Oats veggie pizza. Had to resist, the mind is an awful thing when it works against the body.

Get home and was trying to have a peaceful night, but that is hard when you got a roommate, who doesn't understand why you are doing what you do. Then she got the ghetto boyfriend, and it was all downhill from there. To much drama. I drank more water than I thought possible but when the drama started, I wanted foods, solids, but I prayed and resisted and made a wonderful carrot/orange/lemon drink. It is tasty.

Hopefully today will be better, will be going to work out today, so as to get the stress off.

11187, Day 3 - Just the facts
Posted by Ornjekiss, Wed Oct-03-01 04:05 AM
Wow I know my bathroom in a personal way. I know how many times you can courtesy flush, until the toilet won't flush no more, I know that fan doesn't work very well, I know I hate the carpet in the bathroom, we need a new shower curtain, etc. Why do I know these things cuz I was in the bathroom all afternoon and night. Yes I saw some things come out that I don't want to see again. Shall we call it a cornicopia (sp?) of colors. Enuff of that.

N-E-wayz, for breakfast I had ornge/apple/pear juice it was goody, goody. And lunch I had I carton of Green Machine Naked Juice, which has alot of acid I might add. Dinner I was still feeling kind of full, but my mind wanted an onion bagel. That would have been tasty, but I drunk water for the rest of the night.

I was trying to look in the Warehouse music store but my stomach was doing some strange things and making odd noises, oh yeah it was time. I had to rush home, and become one with the bathroom.

This fast isn't very hard cuz I think my body is used to me fasting, I usually do a sunup sundown fast on THursdays, where I only drink water. So I don't think it will be such a challenge. The most challenging fast I did was the 'no sugar', that was hard.

But, so far so good.

time is slipping away!!

But, no matter, according to my self-indulgent feasting schedule next weekend, I have ONE MORE WEEK of fasting to go. So a week from today I get to sink my teeth into some hot, sweet, juicy...

spinach leaves!!!!

And then a week from saturday all the non-dairy cheesecake I can bypass my guilt to handle. It ain't 30 days, it's a few days short, but I think my guilt (or lack thereof) can withstand it. I've done pretty good. ;)

Uta-- proud to know, this Saturday morning bright and early I have a colonic schedule. *praying*

And had another enema, ew.

Mostly fruit juices. Can't bring myself to drink veggie juice, don't know why.. but I think the potato leek soup may be supplementing me in that arena, plus a couple of odwalla greenfoods.

a calling card number so you can tell me about it...immediately after mine i felt so good i had to tell people about the feelings i was having...it was GREAT!

tips: trust the doctor, they know what they are doing...ASK QUESTIONS! that's how you learn...since you had an enema the insertion part won't be shit to you...when the water fills up the belly, allow it to swell untill its slightly uncomfortable, that way you are "blowing up" your colon and loosening the stones off the walls with the pressure exerted on them...when you need to release make sure s/he is massaging your stomach to help ease the stones out...if you have acidophilus powder, take it with you...they might not have any and you'll want to replace this after that "hurricane" just went through your system...if they have apple cider vinegar, use that and some chlorophyll...

you can take your own stuff too...

have someone go with you to see the stuff coming out...i guarantee they'll wanna get one too!

good luck and you're doing great. i'm happy over here on this end that you've gone so far!

today i drove to DC in a uhaul and had no drinks with me, i was rushed trying to get here...

unfortunately all i could get was v-8 splash drinks and water...seeing the changes in scenery through the states was cool. North Carolina has a nice little wildflower project going on with some beautiful purple flowers. Gas in South Carolina was $1.19 where we stopped! then in DC it was like $45.00...not as cold as i thought here.

today i made a mistake in a moment of dispair and drank something i shouldn't have. no excuse whatsoever...i wont say what it is, but if you can unscramble this (prepeprd), you'll know *hanging head*...keep it to yourselves. I think, damn, what day _is_ it?

Yesterday waterfasted MAINLY.. broke down at about 2p and got an odwalla greenfood. I was dizzy and verging on unconscious.. couldn't work. I didn't get a lot of sleep because I woke up early--6am, way early for me, after going to bed at 1230-- to go see a house in Echo Park. I'm moving outta Culver City. I've grown fond of some hangouts around here, but the house I live in doesn't cut it, and I've gotten kind of tired of the westside...

So, lost 2 pounds yesterday. Didn't feel sick like my first water fast day bcuz I had that one odwalla, but still lost the same amt of weight. I weigh 143.5.

Today I will probably repeat-- water all day, one odwalla which I'm about to get. Altho today is WAY better than yesterday because I got more sleep!!

Tomorrow is the day. :P

Had my colonic this morning-- took a shower and drove a block over to the place. (Seriously didn't know it was there.)

Hilites:
-full body massage
-apple cider vinegar flush
-full hour 'o purging

I felt great afterwards, except stuff didn't seriously start flushing till the last quarter of the hour I was there. I want to go back when I can afford it.

The process-- NOT painful, not even the super-lubed insertion. It's done entirely by machine and very sterile, so no icky smells or mess, or embarassing gas or having to "push" stuff out. Liquid squirts into you, stuff is sucked out of you, no muss, no fuss. If you're considering it, it doesn't feel bad/weird, & the place was 400% more welcoming than a doctor's office (I felt like I was in someone's home!)

Otherwise.. had my trusty Odwalla green food and water and pear juice. May have soup latah... drove around the artist ghetto in echo park all day and fell in love...

11202, day 26...?
Posted by dispatriot, Wed Oct-10-01 08:26 AM
I guess, or my math is all off. What date is the last day of the 42-day fast? I thought today should be 28 days for me.. but I'm all off. :)

Today is my last day. Officially. Although I have the feeling I will be doing this regularly in continuing efforts to lose weight; we shall see if that's a viable way to go. I'm not sure if a day-fast or two-day fast will expell toxins as easily, i.e. if the effects are only manifested when the behavior is cumulative. (I'm equating toxins in this instance to fat.) A large part of my focus with dietary health will be to pare down the amount of pastas/breads; so in cases where I think maybe I've gone overboard on the carbs I could modify that with a day of fasting... It's going to be very experimental.

I regret that I didn't have the discipline to start an at-home exercise regiment, which means the weight that has been lost will be gained back to some extent-- not all, since I'm going on a strict vegan diet! But some. The only way to combat that is through more exercise than what I'm doing now, which is really only going for a walk most every day. The only way it will work is if I ritualize it, and getting up early in the mornings has not been a reality for me on this fast. I have noticed in the last couple of days that I NEED my 8 hours of sleep.. for a while I thought it was only that I couldn't wake up in the morning no matter when I went to bed. So if I try to get up, and that means 7 hours of sleep for my body, my body instantly rejects it and entices me with dreams of my extra sleep equating to me saving the world... ;) So, anyhow, knowing this maybe I can work a more effective morning-time routine into my life.

I have consumed mostly water and an odwalla green juice (or equivalent of) a day for the past week... tomorrow I will report on how finally eating is going, although I'm actually largely indifferent to it. At this point I could eat or not eat. ;)

11203, blood
Posted by dispatriot, Thu Oct-11-01 08:14 AM
Usually I start bleeding on the new moon, the way women naturally should. Since I got a female roommate several months ago, I have switched rhythms with her and bleed on the full moon. (grr.)

This month I was late.. still am. Full moon was several weeks ago.. my body behaved as though it would start bleeding on monday of this week. So far only spotting all week. I'm assuming this is related to the fast, and tomorrow will probably take some Vitex Agnus Castus (root that causes onset of blood).

Are there vitamins/nutrients that the femme body needs in order to bleed, or is it just that my body is in starvation mode?

//..so far, so good; I have eaten 5 grapes.

It's worked b4.. I'm a paranoid chicky generally when it comes to being preggers... unlike you I am SO NOT READY to have kids. :) Now, or possibly ever... It's a beautiful thing that I don't think I can handle, so generally at the first signs of lateness I down some of this stuff. I had a friend turn me on to it 3-4 years ago when I first stopped taking the pill; supposed to promote period regularity, but generally makes me bleed pretty quickly, since I only take it when I should be bleeding anyway.

And pregnant wimmins, of course, aren't supposed to take it, ever. :)

Red raspberry tea is good to drink during the menses. Also, drink lots of tomato juice, grape juice, and beet juice. Red foods. High in iron. It is important to replace the iron lost via the blood during this time period.

of heavy starches, nuts and seeds on the first days of a long fast. Breaking a fast properly is just as important as being on the fast. Raw fruits->vegetables-> nuts/seeds->whatever is usually the order that many fasting experts advise you begin reintorducing food into your diet. I've learned the hard way.

One time I broke a fast with Wheat THins

It's been a long haul but it is finally over. Although I did not accomplish all of my goals for this fast, I still feel as though it was productive. Next time I won't undergo such a rigorous fast during the school year. Neverthess this fast still allowed me to reach just another level of refinement and awareness:

Less starches/cooked foods and more raw;
More attentiveness to bodily functions;
More daily stretching/meditation;
and more dedication to martial discipline.

I have a number of good recipes that I want to try out. Fasting always sparks my creativity particularly in the food/drink department, go figure... How many DC okps want to be guinea pigs?
Imma holla atcha soon.

Thanks to all the Okayfasters who participated in OkayFast Fall 2001 and to all the fasting supporters. Winter is only a few months away... WHATCHA SAY?
