No he answered the question, he just did it poorly.
If he had failed to answer the question he either would have remained silent or given an answer that didn't pertain to the question.
You can see where he was trying to go with his answer, he was trying to say that he used the criticism to fuel his desire to improve his game, he just botched the analogy.
Simple as that.
