Tennessee's Lane Kiffin has agreed in principle to become the next head coach at Southern California, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Chris Low on Tuesday.

Kiffin would replace Pete Carroll, who jumped to the NFL as coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

Kiffin, the former Oakland Raiders coach, led the Volunteers for only one season.

According to the sources, Kiffin will bring his father and defensive coordinator, Monte Kiffin, and assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron to Southern Cal with him, and wide receivers coach Kippy Brown will be named interim head coach at Tennessee.

I'm really not happy about this and don't know one SC fan who is. The only saving grace is that he's bringing Coach O back and he's bringing his pops. Some websites were kicking around a Dewayne Walker/Norm Chow combo and that would have been a lot better. Another example of Garrett's ineptitude.

I'm not a big fan of Tennessee, but I do think it's dirty how coaches can roll out on a team with no warning or penalty.

68844, I like the hire for USC
Posted by calij81, Tue Jan-12-10 09:00 PM
especially since he is bringing his dad and Ed Orgeron.

This will help keep some continuity from the Pete era.
68845, cant say Im too psyched but its not the disaster its bein made out to be
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Jan-12-10 09:06 PM
it's basically promoting an assistant from the most successful era in the past 30 years, keeping some continuity, allowing a Carroll underling to see if he can continue what he helped him build, etc.

I mean, I'm sure Tennessee is mad because it looked like they were building something there but that's not really of much concern to me.
68846, Yeah I don't see this as a disaster at all and as a Cal fan
Posted by calij81, Tue Jan-12-10 09:11 PM
this hire worries me.

Kiffin now has both NFL and CFB head coaching experience. He did two things in his one year with the Vols: had a winning season and made Jonathan Compton look like a competent CFB QB. All this in a rebuilding year with the Vols.

More than anything he has surrounded himself with good coaches in his dad and Ed Oergeron. He should be able to keep the current recruiting class and maybe even add a kid or two that he was recruiting for the Vols.
68847, I don't buy his coaching accumen, at all
Posted by sfMatt, Tue Jan-12-10 09:16 PM
and I think a) ncaa is going to be all over a coach that they have already slapped on the wrist 10 times going to a program as in their crosshairs as USC

b) I don't think this changes the recruiting landscape much at all - SC was a recruiting monster, and it remains one.

68848, Why because he failed in Oakland? Every coach fails there

>and I think a) ncaa is going to be all over a coach that they
>have already slapped on the wrist 10 times going to a program
>as in their crosshairs as USC

Cmon now those were all just minor violations and will have nothing to do with what happens between SC and the NCAA. Plus I still doubt anything happens to SC, people are still just speculating.

>b) I don't think this changes the recruiting landscape much at
>all - SC was a recruiting monster, and it remains one.

True it is but I always felt that SC recruiting had fallen off just a bit since Ed Orgeron left SC. Say what you want about Ed as a heac coach or even a position coach but I really respect Ed as a recruiter
68849, my initial shock is subsiding a bit & I'm settling into the idea

It's a better job, in a better place, for more money where the guy already has a history in terms of recruiting/staff/university/media/etc.

He probably didn't take the Tennessee job last year thinking he'd be at SC in 2010 but sometimes things change quickly.

It's pretty hard for me to think of a coach I hate more than Pete Carroll, but Lane Kiffin is right on the top of the list.

(Let's not forget I'm a Raider fan as well)

Chow absolutely hates Kiffin and Neuheisel and Kiffin are gonna be throwing some barbs at each other. Neuheisel at least had respect for what Carroll's done at SC... Kiffin, not so much.

Add to the fact we've already beaten Kiff twice? Let's get this rivalry fucking on!
68861, I don't know where you got that Chow hates Lane but he's now back at SC

Posted by MothershipConnection, Tue Jan-12-10 09:32 PM
I've expressed this opinion on this board several times before. He is mediocre coach of incredible entitlement who somehow keeps moving on to bigger and bigger jobs. His promotion forced out Chow (and Pola, and Tim Davis), the only reason he looked semicompetent at Oakland was cause of Al Davis and Art Shell (Tom Cable, a coach who couldn't win at IDAHO, was better in every single fashion), and now ditched Tennessee in a year. After several player arrests and minor NCAA infractions, of course. And, from what I've heard from people who've personally dealt with him on the recruiting trail, a total douche.

All Tennessee fans welcome.

The only thing I'm really scared of is the likely arrivals of Orgy and Monte Kiffin. I'm not really sure whether to feel bad for Bomb that this is the best they can do or feel great that I really have something to really hate again.
68870, I think this is an upgrade for Tennessee too....
Posted by guru0509, Tue Jan-12-10 09:39 PM
I mean its still fucking Tennessee...an SEC school rich in tradition with facilities as good as anyone elses..

now they can go and hire a coach who is GENUINELY interested in being there for the long haul...

We're about to lose all of our recruits. All of them. We were already fucked from Fulmer, now we're REALLY fucked. It's going to be 5 years at least til we're going to be a good program, and that's if we hire a stud coach. This is worst case scenario. We're in trouble man. Huge trouble.

68890, Dear Lane:
Posted by will_5198, Tue Jan-12-10 09:51 PM
Over the past months, you have made a number of public statements that were highly critical of, and designed to embarrass and discredit other organizations, its players and its coaches. We have left you alone during the offseason in hopes that you would cease your immature and destructive campaign.

We realized when we hired you that you were young and inexperienced and that there would be a learning process for you. Your mistakes on player personnel and coaches were overlooked based on our patience with you. But we never dreamed that you would be so untruthful in statements to the press as well as on so many other issues. Your actions are those of a coach looking to make excuses for not winning, rather than a coach focused on winning.

For example, you were involved in recruiting all high school players last winter and you were explicit in your desire to sign Mike Edwards and Nu'Keese Richardson amongst others. They were a must to sign in your eyes, Richardson in particular, because he played in Florida and the Gators gave him high grades. They are no longer with the team and both a waste of two scholarships. Do not run from that now.

We do realize that you wanted to play Jonathan Crompton. He is a terrible player. Get over it and coach this team on the field, that is what you were hired to do. We can win with this team!

Further more, during the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, Monte played your beloved Cover 2 defense and we got killed by the Hokies, allowing over 400 yards of total offense. Embarrassing.

You also said you would improve special teams. You have not. We have the 104th lowest conversion percentage on field goals, including two misses that cost us a win at Alabama. You have the ability and authority to provide your input during special teams meetings, and yet we are still ranked 80th or worse in kickoff and punt return coverage.

Although you continue to use the media to express your dissatisfaction with others, no one has publicly pointed out to you that in 10 games against BCS opponents played this year, your offense has averaged just 24 points. That put tremendous pressure on the defense.

And I know that you brought father in to run the defense. However, the defense was destroyed by Virginia Tech and Ole Miss down the stretch, a sign that it was not improving. Do not also run from the defense and your responsibilities.

This letter constitutes notice that your violation of your contract is a despicable act on par with your idol Urban Meyer. Run away to the Pac-10, a place where your irresponsible tactics might produce a more succesful result. Then again, you've already lost once to Rick Neuheisel as head coach.

Sincerely,

Tennessee Football, Inc.
68891, can you blame him tho? AND Norm Chow is coming back as OC

68983, I bet Mike Hamilton is shitting himself.
Posted by will_5198, Tue Jan-12-10 11:18 PM
whether it was this year or next year or five years from now, Kiffin's grandiose mindset wouldn't have chained him to Tennessee for long. if not USC or another higher profile college gig, it would've been the NFL (as an OC, maybe) -- he's just too young and brash to be thinking of his "final" coaching move.

he was going to leave carnage whenever that happened, so it's probably better this way. I can see his recruiting ethics going further and further south as time progressed, and him burying the program from within.

and as for the lost recruiting class, whatever. in the short and near term, it matters little. the current team is an issue, however. they'll be on their third system in three years and have little trust for authority (Hamilton first, and now Kiffin). all that "spark" of a new coach is gone.

I think Tennessee and Hamilton have to be realistic here. there's still a lot to offer: it's one of the top five jobs in the best BCS conference. but there's still that issue of the other four, which have just as much money and better recruiting advantages.

if the Vols go with an older coach, this has to be his last move (not Cutcliffe -- great guy but his health is iffy). that was the good (and bad) about Fulmer. he wasn't going anywhere. if they go with somebody younger, it has to be a person with ties to the program in some way -- otherwise this happen all over again in two years.

should be interesting.
68984, Knew it would happen eventually, but not like this

Completely disrespectful by someone who hasn't proved much. Things were looking good there for a minute. Huge setback for the program. Too worked up to go to bed.
68985, I wonder if Locker hadn't stayed at U-Dub whether Sark mighta gone to SC
Posted by Bombastic, Tue Jan-12-10 11:46 PM
Probably not since I don't think he's quite as willing to be a hated transient as Kiffin but it would have had to at least cross his mind a bit more than it probably did.

I think SC would have preferred Sark because you'd get a lot of the same benefits they see from bringing Kiffin back with a little bit less of a 'loose cannon'.

But it is kinda interesting to think about how a 21-year-old's decision to stay in school might have shifted the fate of three programs.
68986, I don't think Cutty would've cut. Seems sincere bout rebuildin here.

It's certainly one of the first things I thought of when Pete got the Hawks job & I'm sure Lock comin back certainly made his decision to stay a lot easier than it could've been had he bounced.

68996, Damn a lot of people in here MAD, actually FURIOUS
Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 12:01 AM
I didn't think the UCLA crowd would be that mad over Chow leaving. Rumors were flying that he and Slick Rick didn't get along to begin with and that he might leave. Was that UCLA offense bad due to a lack of talent and youth or is the game passing Chow by?? I don't know but we are about to find out. All I know is UCLA is going to have a lot tougher time recruiting those stormin Mormons without Chow.

I am on the fence with Kiffin. I think, if I were an USC fan the best thing about Kiffin coming back is him bringing Ed Orgeron back. Plus they do get some continuity with Lane. Kiffin as a HC has a lot to prove, plus he is still young and will some growing pains. I still can't believe he lost to UCLA at home this last year, that would worry me if I were an SC fan.

I am shocked people are so mad that Kiffin keeps moving up. GOOD for him, that is how this shit works. Don't get me wrong Tennessee is a great program but it isn't what it used to be and it isn't SC. While I have never been to Tennessee, I have to believe that California and LA>>>>>>>Knoxville Tennessee. Not to mention Tennessee is a tough place to recruit kids to with Bama, LSU, Florida, and all those other schools fighting for recruits.

It seems like SC asked a lot of people about the coaching job and a lot of people turned them down and decided to just jump at the first person who said yes. Perhaps SC was getting desperate? Especially with signing day around the corner.

It is funny to see people still believing that some sort of major sanctions are going to fall on SC! Nothing major is going to happen to SC, they may lose a few scholarships and get a stern warning but ain't shit happening, give it up. People who keep saying sanctions are coming seem to be posting scared.

I still don't believe SC wins the Pac10 next year. They are just losing too much on both sides of the ball and I still am not sold on Barkley.
68997, I think the only two groups that are
Posted by will_5198, Wed Jan-13-10 12:12 AM
mad would be Tennessee and UCLA fans. the former, obviously, because Kiffin sold them a bill of goods and left after 12 months. you wrote "GOOD for him" like anybody at Tennessee gives a can of Bush's what's personally best for his own career.

UCLA would be mad because Kiffin is bringing together a lot of the old staff that made the Trojans so successful under Carroll, including their own offensive coordinator (although maybe not). plus, if you're an Oakland Raiders/UCLA fan, you have to be mad as hell to see Kiffin back in town and possibly making a rival better.

I'm over it -- what's done is done. but those two parties definitely have a right to be mad. it's condescending to think otherwise.
68998, I should have added that Tennessee fans have all the right in
Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 12:20 AM
the world to be mad. I completely understand that anger.

UCLA fans is a bit more confusing. Are they mad that Norm Chow is leaving? It seems like a lot of UCLA fans were upset with the offense these past two years and were getting upset with Chow. Plus, it had been reported that Chow and Rick didn't see "eye to eye" or get along very well. Rumors were going around that Chow wasn't coming back after their bowl game.

I am in more wait and see mode with Kiffin at SC. He did some good things at Tennessee but his defense was destroyed by a shitty VaTech offense and was beaten at home by a UCLA team starting a redshirt freshman QB.
68999, I just really hate Lane Kiffin
Posted by MothershipConnection, Wed Jan-13-10 12:27 AM
And have for a long time. I begrudgingly hoped for his success during his one harmonious season with the Raiders, but he showed his true colors again. Not that I don't hate Al Davis, I hate on him too, but the Kiffin hate is another level. Now that he's at my biggest rival, I got actual fury coming out.

for Tedford these last few years. You can't say one word of disrespect or question Tedford over at California Golden Blogs without people getting all upset. It is unreal.

Don't get me wrong I am grateful of what Tedford has done with the program but I just believe Tedford has taken Cal as far as he can.

People love to say, "well wait for our new facilities" shit those facilities aren't going to coach these kids up. They aren't going to make Kevin Riley a competent and consistent QB. Furthermore, if our defense sucks again next year, Tedford has to fire Bob Gregory or I will have lost all remaining respect I have for Tedford.

Tedford gets two more years to prove his worth, after that I am done with him.
69008, Hey. I had 5 years of Dorrell when I was in school.
Posted by MothershipConnection, Wed Jan-13-10 01:24 AM
And the last two years of Neuheisel have been uninspiring, at best. Sooooooo....

I actually completely agree with your take on Tedford, that's probably why you're one of the few Cal fans I think are alright.

The more I think of it, the more I'm hoping Chow stays. Haven't been too impressed so far, but he's got two now sophomore QBs coming back with some talent and experience (alright, Brehaut didn't get that many snaps, but he at least had a spring+fall camp and a few snaps), and his line, though not the most talented and lost their most promising young player to a mission, is mostly intact and enters their 2nd or 3rd year of experience. Going into a new system definitely won't help these guys. If there's anytime for them to put it all together, it's probably next year, and either they do that or Chow and Neuheisel are looking for jobs soon, cause the defense will probably be mediocre at best.
69009, What is going with Stanley Hasiak? Is he coming back to UCLA?
Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 01:33 AM
I thought between him and Xavier that UCLA had some young building blocks on the OL. Now with Hasiak potentially leaving nad Xavier going on his mission it seems like UCLA's OL is going to take a step back.

Yeah UCLA's defense is going to have a tough time replacing the talent they lose this year. It seems like both Cal and UCLA defense were major let downs, Cal's more so.

UCLA really needs a good RB. It seems like you guys have a lot of bodies back their but no one that really scares an opposing defense. Thigpen, Coleman, Franklin, who else...? What RB do you like on the UCLA roster right now?
69010, 50/50 on Hasiak
Posted by MothershipConnection, Wed Jan-13-10 01:41 AM
He's back in school taking classes, but no one's sure if they'll let him back on the team yet. Disciplinary problems. Just too many holes to fill on the defense, though. Moore and Ayers are NFLers, Ayers really came on strong to at the end of the season, and Datone Jones could be one, but Todd Howard (the DL coach) has his work cut out for him though. He's a very good coach, our line's been a strength for a while now even without premiere talent (minus Price), but I just don't see the bulk in there to stop the run.

I like Franklin the most of the current backs. He just needs to bulk up a bit and hold onto the ball and he'll be productive if not spectacular. Coleman should be a fullback. Thigpen a returner and spot player. Malcolm Jones and Jordan James are big time recruits though and if there's any position I would give a freshman major tick in, it's probably running back.

Riley is leaving... wait, no he's a junior? Will he magically put it together? Or does he have competition for once?
69011, Riley is a junior so he will be back
Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 01:58 AM
I really hope he can finally put it together. I can't pin all the blame on him. Our OL was young and had four new starters this season and the inexperience showed as they really struggled against Oregon, OSU, and Washington. Plus our WR's are still a work in progress.

However, Riley still made some stupid decisions and he can be a bit careless with the ball while scrambling. Hey it took Dennis Dixon four years to put it all together right???

As far as competition, I think Tedford opens up the QB position to competition once again. His main competition will be redshirt junior Brock Mansion and redshirt sophomore Beau Sweeney. Sweeney beat out Mansion for the 2nd string spot but never saw any real playing time. Mansion is more your prototype QB in that he is tall 6'5, Sweeney is a bit smaller as he is listed at 6'2. Mansion was a big time QB recruit out of Texas but I am worried that Sweeney was able to beat him out for the 2nd string spot.

I also think our recruiting efforts were hurt by the tree-sitters fiasco and it is kind of showing on the playing field, so I will give Tedford that. This class is shaping up to be a good one, especially on the defensive side of the ball which we need, as well as some WR's.
69012, This could be a disaster either for USC or UCLA
Posted by MothershipConnection, Wed Jan-13-10 12:20 AM
On the Norm Chow thing, now that I think of it, I'm on the fence on this. I haven't been terribly impressed by his offensive gameplans so far, but it would be good to keep the continuity, and he still has the track record. Plus it's not like he's been given the best of talent. If he stays, good, if he goes, good I now have extra hate.

Kiffin, I've never been terribly impressed by his coaching. He's far from bad, relative to all coaches he's probably above average, but he's not a genius either, nothing to suggest his rapid promotion so far. Plus, he's a douche.

Best case for me? NCAA hits SC with real sanctions (loss of scholarships), Lane stay getting them in trouble, Chow stays and finds old magic/Chow leaves and doesn't find old magic

Worst case? Slap on the wrist for SC, Lane's dream team works out, Chow leaves and finds old magic, UCLA gets run over next year to a 3-9 record and a decade of horror.

I'm 50/50 as to which happens right now. As a Raiders/UCLA fan though, I think I might start rooting for UT on general principle now.
69013, I am on the fence with Kiffin
Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 12:29 AM
I think it was a good hire because he has roots to SC and Pete and will help with continuity. He is bringing in a good staff (with or without Chow) with Ed Orgeron but I am still not sold on Monte.

Right now, no one really knows how good of a coach Kiffin is. He failed in Oakland but that isn't unusual. He had a decent year at UT in a rebuilding year but he seemed to talk a bigger game and never backed it up on the field. His signature game was a close loss to Bama but he also got destroyed against VaTech and UCLA beat him in Knoxville.

Plus I think Kiffin, despite having HC experience is going to experience some growing pains and will be under a microscope at SC. I also think the connection to Pete Carroll kind of hurts him. People are going to expect Kiffin to come in and keep things status quo, thus if he stumbles early people might not be as forgiving.

At this rate, Lane Kiffin is an 8-5 season at USC away from a $50 million contract to coach Peyton Manning and the Colts.

Seriously, why not? Why wouldn't he just keep rising up the coaching ranks on the basis of nothing much at all? If a 31-year-old with no head-coaching experience can get the Oakland Raiders job, and a guy who got fired from that job after losing 15 of 20 games can get the Tennessee job, and a guy who went 7-6 in a reckless first season in Knoxville can get the USC job … is there any rung of the sport to which Kiffin cannot climb?

I mean, what if he actually does something impressive as a coach? Win a conference title and they might just fast-track him into the Hall of Fame.

Paris Hilton has paid more dues than Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin comes across as a guy who was born on third base and acts as if he hit a triple -- but given the way people have thrown good jobs and big money at him, it's hard to blame him for thinking he's the next Knute Rockne.

USC is the latest enabler. Perhaps feeling the flutter of desperation after reportedly being stiff-armed by Mike Riley, Jack Del Rio, Jeff Fisher and Steve Sarkisian, the school had to go to someone it knew would say yes -- especially if that someone has ties to the Pete Carroll glory days.

Kiffin is that guy. His jilting of Tennessee and all the players he and his Orange Pride hostesses sweet-talked into becoming Volunteers is distasteful. The school gave him a big break, and he broke athletic director Mike Hamilton's ankles sprinting out of town in just over a year. Once again, loyalty is for suckers in the realm of college coaching.

That said, Kiffin is taking a better job.

Who wouldn't prefer coaching the flagship school in the Pacific-10 to coaching what is no better than the fourth- or fifth-best program in the murderous SEC? Who wouldn't prefer the recruiting backyard of Southern California to East Tennessee? Who wouldn't prefer the beach to the boonies?

But just because Kiffin might want the USC job doesn't mean USC is beholden to give it to him. What's to love about Lane?

His career head-coaching record is 12-21.

He's already 0-1 against USC's biggest rival, UCLA.

His signature win was a loss -- a two-point defeat at eventual national champion Alabama. Other than that, the best thing the Volunteers did in 2009 was thumping the worst Georgia team in a decade.

His team was de-pantsed in the Chick-fil-A Bowl by Virginia Tech, and de-pantsed in Oxford by an underachieving Mississippi.

And that's just the on-field stuff. Off the field is where he's really raised doubts, and raised the ire of SEC commissioner Mike Slive. Kiffin has specialized in stupidity.

He knows the periodic table of the elements better than the NCAA rule manual -- that much became obvious after erroneously accusing Florida's Urban Meyer of cheating, and the string of secondary violations the Volunteers committed on his watch. Blithely commenting that he takes NCAA enforcement scrutiny of his program as "a compliment" only reinforced the notion that the guy doesn't get it when it comes to compliance.

Which, when it comes to USC, would seemingly be a concern. The school has a date next month with the NCAA Committee on Infractions to answer allegations of violations in both the football and men's basketball programs. Think the committee will be impressed by USC's new commitment to piety by trotting out Lane Kiffin?

So there is a lot to question about this hire, and about the meteoric rise of mediocre Lane Kiffin. But who knows? Maybe this will be where he actually earns his station.

Kiffin is quickly assembling another all-star coaching staff, which was his signature achievement at Tennessee. He's bringing dad Monte as his defensive coordinator and Ed Orgeron as his recruiting coordinator, plus possibly adding former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow to the ensemble.

And Kiffin knows the turf. He was recruiting coordinator there before, when the Trojans were signing a constellation of stars on an annual basis. He should be able to sign plenty of A-list talent.

Plus, it's USC. Even if the program gets slapped by the NCAA -- which might have factored into Carroll's leaving, and rejections from other candidates -- it will not stay down for long.

Actually, it won't stay down for long if Lane Kiffin is the right guy. Maybe this time he'll stay in one place long enough to determine whether he can actually coach.

his bases at the end by indicating that this hire very well could work & be the place where he proves his head coaching acumen?

Forde needs to make up his mind, is he the College Football version of Dubya (since the 'thinks he hit a triple' cliche is an obvious nod) who has good connects but can't coach his way out of a paper bag or is he a guy that people have interest in for a reason who took a better job & might be a good hire at a school he has a history?

And LOL @ crowbarring in his Raider record with no context as if taking over an Al Davis-owned team that won two games the season before he got there is really relevant here.

I mean I can't say Kiffin was my first, second, or even probably third choice.....much like SC. But I can't really say it's a bad one & some of this mock outrage by media members is laughable.

Dude left for a better job, better place to live, more money, in an environment where he's been a part of major success.

It was a pretty classless way to exit but I'm not sure there was any way he could have done it that would have satisfied anyone in Knoxville.

in a situation that has any correlation to the one he's going to be in here (i.e. not inherenting a two-win Al Davis team or going 7-5 in a rebuilding year at UT) then it's irrelevant.

Lane's contributions/connections to SC's program is what got him this job, those connections (and proven recruiting track record) are why this made sense for them.

This was SC's best way of attempting to preserve what Carroll started here on short notice, as such, it's a solid hire for them. There's no need to cop a plea.

Forde is the one copping pleas by railing against Kiffin but then talking out of the other side of his mouth to cover his bases. Pick one & stick with it.
69048, all hate aside, who thinks SC will win the Pac-10 this yr or next?

i think they can. hell of a staff and the recruiting
shouldn't fall off too much if at all.

Oregon will be the favorite and i guess UCLA is getting
stronger. Sark seems to be on the upswing w/ UW as is
Hargaugh at Stanford but SC is still the gold standard
and everything is in place for them to compete, even if
they suffer a few scholarship losses to sanctions.

Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 11:15 AM
they are just losing too much this year with Williams, McKnight, Stafon Johnson, Mays, Everson Griffin, three OL, the entire secondary, and McCoy.

Barkley is going to have to step up big time and carry this team but he is losing all of his playmakers.

Perhaps the year after they might win the Pac10 but that is going to depend a lot on Barkley, who I am not sold on.

Barkley will be a year better & while there's some people going that will hurt (Joey, TMays, McCoy, Damien Williams) it's not on the level of losing four linebackers who started in the NFL as rookies along with their starting quarterback who is still playing in the playoffs.

People are going to find out pretty quickly that the demise of USC has been greatly exagerrated.

Let Oregon go into a season *expected* to win & see how that suits them. They were *expected* to win in a big spot three times just this season & took convincing L's each time.

I ain't conceeding shit to them & look forward to the Trojans being able to play the underdog role for once.
69054, Fuck that SC isn't winning the Pac10 next season, would you like
Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 02:04 PM
to put some money on this. No $50 spot this time, I am talking real money, say $200?

Losing four LB's wasn't the main problem with that SC defense, the secondary was.

Plus I doubt Barkley's ability to carry this offense with his two biggest receiving targets in Williams and McCoy gone and the two best RB's that SC had gone as well. Isn't SC also losing three OL?

Throw in the fact that SC loses its best players on defense in Mays (even as overrated as he was in the pass coverage) and Everson Griffin, as well as the entire secondary.
69055, lol @ 'losing 4 NFL rookie starter caliber LBs & a QB wasn't the issue'
Posted by Bombastic, Wed Jan-13-10 02:14 PM
So the secondary's the main issue yet I'm supposed to throw in the towel because Mays isn't back there to let someone catch the ball & then try to take their head off twenty yards downfield?

And why would I bet $200 on SC winning the Pac-10 with no odds when they're not even close to being the favorite going in?

That wouldn't even make sense from a gambling perspective.

All I said is all the people tap-dancing on the grave are more than likely in for a surprise.

I have stated why I am on the fence with Kiffin.

If anything this last has proved that SC can't just simply "reload" like it has in the past. With all that talent that SC is losing and with no Pete their to try to hold it together I just can't see SC making a serious run at the Pac10. I can see them losing 2-4 games and more in the 3-4 loss range.

What does SC really return next year? People are counting on Matt Barkley to improve and become more consistent but how can he when that offense is about to lose 5-6 starters on offense and their best two players on defense.

None of their current LB's seem all that talented, atleast not as talented as the last group.

Yeah you guys got Monte Kiffin now but the last image I have of his Tennessee defense is getting lit up by a mediocre VaTech offense and losing to a young UCLA offense at home. I have doubts about Monte coming in and having just as much defensive success as Pete.
69057, the Pac-10 isn't as tough as you think & their schedule sets up nicely
Posted by Bombastic, Wed Jan-13-10 03:00 PM
the bottom line is you're counting on these losses as being too heavy when the reality is this is the *least* heavy amount of losses they've faced in probably five years.

Stafon Johnson sadly was gone in September. McCoy got injured & basically was a non-factor after mid-October. McKnight hurts but they got their first taste of playing & practicing without him leading up to their Bowl. Mays was hurt most of the year & actually seemed to regress as a player. Damien Williams is a big loss but at the same time you get Ronald Johnson back who was hurt most of this year to step in as the alpha-dog wideout.

You have stability at the quarterback position and a lot of highly regarded guys having a shot to play who already have experience now due to injury like Blake Ayles & Matt Kalil.

I'm trying to think of when they've had less attrition than this. I'm not going on record as saying they're going to win the conference but it will not surprise me at all to see them contend for it & a 10 win/2-3 in-conference record is well within reach, which could conceivably be enough to finish with a P-10 title depending on tiebreaks.
69058, No doubt their schedule does set up nicely
Posted by calij81, Wed Jan-13-10 03:43 PM
To me it feels like SC is losing a lot and Matt Barkley hasn't shown enough to prove he can carry a team.

Is it possible for SC to win the Pac10 next year, absolutely. I just don't see it, especially with Pete gone. Yes Kiffin is bringing in a good staff and has ties to SC and Pete but I still believe that SC is going to suffer a bit of a let down in the coaching area that is going to cost them a game or two they otherwise would have won with Carroll.

>Losing four LB's wasn't the main problem with that SC defense,
>the secondary was.

Nah, it was losing four LB's. Two of which were the two best defensive rookies in the NFL this year. Devon Kennard, a freshman DE prospect, was playing LB because their shit was so thin. Calippo was green as well. Not to mention the injuries that defense suffered over the course of the season and wright not benig able to play.

>Plus I doubt Barkley's ability to carry this offense with his

They'll have a young but talented O next year. They still have Rojo, Ayles, Kalil and Smith as their tackles, Havilli Marc Tyler (if healthy) and a shit load of talented 1st year guys that will be able to help out as well. Add Normie and that O should be ok. I dont think USC wins the Pac 10 next year but I wouldnt be shocked if they came close to it.

Well, I really have to hand it to the USC Trojans: They aren't even faking it anymore.

They're in it to win, everything else be damned. They don't care what the NCAA thinks, what other schools think or what the public thinks.

The Trojans brought O.J. Mayo in to their basketball program in the most publicly illegal way possible. Their best football player of the last decade, Reggie Bush, reportedly took hundreds of thousands of dollars from a wannabe sports marketer while in school. Their best running back last season, Joe McKnight, reportedly drove a Land Rover registered to another marketer.

For years, USC has stonewalled all investigations. USC thinks the "N" in NCAA stands for "nuisance" and the other three letters aren't worth learning.

Now, with the NCAA finally dragging its USC investigation(s) to the finish line, USC athletic director Mike Garrett just hired ... Lane Kiffin.

Wow.

Lane Kiffin, Mike?

Really?

What happened?

Did Barry Switzer say no?

This is the same coach whose Tennessee program is facing a wide-ranging investigation into its recruiting practices, according to The New York Times. This is the same Kiffin who falsely accused Florida coach Urban Meyer of recruiting violations last year, and who has committed more than his share of secondary violations in Knoxville, and who served under Pete Carroll when the Bush scandal happened.

It is the same Kiffin who torches so many relationships, he might as well dip his finger in lighter fluid before he shakes hands. Kiffin's mouth poses such a danger to the people around him that when he goes through airport security, he has to remove his tongue.

USC doesn't care about any of it. I think Garrett saw the recent ESPN documentary on Miami's football program and thought it was an instructional video.

If USC were a public university, with elected trustees, subject to Freedom of Information Act requests, the Trojans probably couldn't get away with this. They would at least have to fake guilt for their scandals. Somebody would step up and say enough already.

Most schools in this position do what they can to convince the NCAA they are sorry. They scrounge up evidence that they have changed their ways. Sorry, but you can't trot Lane Kiffin in front of the NCAA and say things have changed. USC must know that. USC just doesn't care.

USC is just confirming what people already suspected about it. And Kiffin is confirming what people suspected about him.

Kiffin is a bright young coach who is confident enough in his own authority to surround himself with big-name assistants. But he is living in a world where all that matters is Lane Kiffin winning. He just proved it once again.

It's not just that Kiffin left Tennessee after one year. In a vacuum, that is understandable. Circumstances change, your dream job comes up -- nobody can control timing.

But it is hard to imagine a university putting itself on the line for a coach more than Tennessee did for Kiffin. Remember: Kiffin was coming off a disastrous stint with the Raiders when the Vols hired him. (By definition, all stints with the Raiders are disastrous.) Raiders owner Al Davis had called him a "flat-out liar."

Tennessee pulled Kiffin off the discard pile, paid him more than $2 million a year and gave him more than $3 million to pay his assistants -- the biggest salary pool for any school in the country. (One of those assistants, Lane's father Monte, got $1.2 million -- and a $300,000 retention bonus if he was still on staff Dec. 31. Now, two weeks later, Monte is heading to USC -- and presumably taking that retention bonus with him.)

Tennessee stood by Kiffin when he violated rules and falsely accused others of doing so. The school deified him when he boasted about hurting his SEC rivals by stealing their coaches.

Tennessee let Kiffin do pretty much anything he wanted to whomever he wanted. As he told SI's John Ed Bradley last winter: "You can't count the number of people we've run off because they couldn't keep up, and I'm including secretaries. They had to go because they weren't going to make it, and they knew it."

Maybe I'm not tough enough for Kiffin's world, but I have a problem with a coach who makes millions of dollars bragging that he ran off a secretary.

So what happens to the secretaries now, Lane? What happens to the support staff? What happens to the players who came to Knoxville with the promise that you were going to win big and watch out for them?

Kiffin seems to think that's Tennessee's problem. And sadly, he is right. Kiffin gets to run off to USC, where all they care about is winning. Lane Kiffin and USC deserve each other. This marriage is both absurd and perfect, all at once.

Kippy Brown just murked his press conference as interim head coach. He was extremely impressive. I really wouldn't be mad if it turned out he gets the job. We could keep Chaney as OC and Lance Thompson as DC. That wouldn't be that bad.

The Muschamp rumors are really heating up though. I'd also be cool with that.

I think he would stay at Tennessee rather than jump at Texas. Besides, maybe Texas goes in a different direction once Mack leaves and doesn't even give Muschamp a call due to his leaving Texas.
69084, Yeah, that would have to be in his contract.
Posted by BennyTenStack, Wed Jan-13-10 02:16 PM
It's also scary that *IF* we got him, there's a possibility that Richt could get fired in a few years and he'd bounce there. He'd be risky, but he would be a big name hire that could salvage recruiting a little bit.

I'm going to try and call some of my boys on the team tonight and see what's up.
69085, as if Texas will demand to hire him anyway.
Posted by will_5198, Wed Jan-13-10 02:18 PM
when Mack is done, and I'm guessing that won't be for another decade, they'll be searching for the best of the best to replace him.

the "coach-in-waiting" thing was more or less a carrot to keep Muschamp as defensive coordinator than an actual deal (prevent him from leaving like Chizik).

it's a non-issue, I think.

the inroads into texas highschools matter
along with the systems that are being run
texas highschools typically groom their system after the one ut is running
it doesn't seem beyond realistic that when mack steps down that they want to transition smoothly to someone groomed under him
rather than have a new system and new inroads established
texas football operates differently than 98% of other colleges out there
69110, they'll go after the best coach. Mack had hardly been

around the Texas HS scene in over a decade when he was hired. it's the name school in one of the most fertile recruiting areas in the nation; any elite coach worth his salt is going to keep the talent flowing in.

what has Muschamp learned in two years that's going to give him some great edge when and if Mack retires in six years? do you think he even wants to marry himself to Greg Davis?

no they're not going to be able to, do you remember the john mackovic years?
the problem was thinking that "we're texas" and anyone will come
that coupled with the cheating that lead to the destruction of the swc

>
>what has Muschamp learned in two years that's going to give

i think muschamp has learned a lot, and it's a good idea to learn a lot before taking a long term job
if you want to be a complete success
and more than like when mac is gone, davis is gone

and davis has proven not to be terrible at times
69112, Mackovic was just a bad hire.
Posted by will_5198, Wed Jan-13-10 05:54 PM
obviously he wasn't an elite coach to begin with. again, Mack Brown didn't have any major qualifications of Texas apprenticeship that I'm aware of -- he was just a better coach than Mackovic and with a longer track record to boot.

anyway, my point is this: from a Tennessee perspective, there's no reason to worry about Muschamp jumping to the Texas job if he were to be hired in Knoxville.

one, new coaches are judged on a three-year basis, and I don't see Mack retiring for at least 5-10 anyway.

two, there's no buyout for Muschamp like there was for Fisher, and everybody wants Mack to stay unlike Bowden.

three, who's to say what Muschamp can do as a HC? say he bombs at Tennessee (again, speculative he's even hired). what, those two years under Mack is going to keep him at the top of the list? Texas is in the position of power, especially if they know when Mack is going to retire (unlike say, Tennessee or USC getting their hands forced).
69113, don't think of texas as a football program
Posted by MEAT, Wed Jan-13-10 07:02 PM
think of it as a top business
there's a company culture that they're trying to keep in house
if you find the next ceo, groom them
don't bring someone in that would/could/might change the culture

when mac retires he's moving into the ad spot
deloss dodd will retire
and then it's business as usual
69114, so if Muschamp left for Georgia in 2011, went 21-18 there,
Posted by will_5198, Wed Jan-13-10 07:09 PM
and Mack decided to retire in 2014, would Muschamp still be on the short list of top candidates years down the line? after he was presumably fired at Georgia, of course. and Texas has already filled his DC position with another rising star.

as an outsider I have a hard time envisioning that. ergo, I don't see why it would be a big concern to any team wanting to court Muschamp.

unlikely

i think in that event we'd start looking at what we have in house
we still have major applewhite who played here and is now coaching here
4 years down the line it would be a stretch but not unheard of
brewster was a likely candidate until he went up to minnesota

i think a lot of stock was placed on muschamp being the next coach
and him being the right fit
a quote from the guy

“Everybody has a hard time with people liking where they’re at,” Muschamp said. “I’m not a grass-is-greener guy. I’m not looking for any other job. I like the one I’ve got.”

i see it like this, in the up and down nature of college football, few schools have continued success
mac and dodd combined have built the program up to the biggest money producer in college football
they have networked the shit out of the state of texas, and are courting a few out of staters if the time is right
that given they have top ten talent every year for the forseeable future
when mac shifts into the head role, they want it to be a smooth transition for the program and for the money to continue as well as the success
you don't want someone that's gonna bolt to the nfl, you want a college football guy

muschamp seems to be that guy

if you were being groomed to run apple by steve jobs
would you go run another company that doesn't have as much continued success or a clear 10 year plan?

georgia, tennesse, (from a complete outside perspective), aren't as forward thinking as a texas is

69116, I think you read my point as if Muschamp were to stay at Texas.
Posted by will_5198, Wed Jan-13-10 07:32 PM
it was written as if Muschamp had taken a head coaching job somewhere else. people are worried if Muschamp were to be at Tennessee (all speculative, again), he might go Kiffin on them. well, I don't see that happening because Brown has shown no NFL inclinations, any college move would be lateral, and seems settled into coaching for another five years at least.

so if you're Tennessee, five years is a long time. and if Muschamp (or whoever they hire) sucks after three years, the fourth and fifth will be meaningless -- because he'll be gone.
69117, i just replied as to why there's no smart reason for him to leave
Posted by MEAT, Wed Jan-13-10 07:40 PM
he's learning to build a program from someone that brought a historic program back to national prominence
wouldn't you want to learn that from someone who's done it rather than learn it on your own?

even if he were to leave, wouldn't you want to learn just a bit more before and jump into a program with a good ad?
69118, OK, but that's neither here nor there to my point.

Former Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin told the News Sentinel on Wednesday that he nor his staff will actively recruit any of UT's commitments.

Kiffin, who will be introduced as Southern California's coach later today, said the players that were told not to attend class today by former UT recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron, were only told to do so after their families called him and inquired about their options.

Kiffin said he would only recruit UT's current prospects if they announced publicly they were no longer interested in UT.

Kiffin said, for the most part, the two schools wouldn't likely be recruiting the same prospects.

Mike Garrett saved him.

TJ Simers from the LA Times was asking the questions. Same guy that earlier asked "do you want to say anything about Rick Neuheisel or Jim Harbaugh so we can get this thing going?" He did this to Pete Carroll all the time, except Carroll usually had comebacks. Simers will be at every press conference trying to get a rise out of Kiffin. I actually like Simers and think he's funny. I hope Kiffin can coach because he sucks at public speaking.

Chow will remain at UCLA

Offensive coordinator Norm Chow will remain with UCLA next season and will not join Lane Kiffin at USC, his agent tells ESPN.

• Blog network:
College Football Nation

Chow, who worked with Kiffin under Pete Carroll at USC, was mentioned as a possible offensive coordinator for the Trojans when Kiffin succeeded Carroll.

But Chow's agent, Don Yee, tells ESPN that talks went no further than one brief contact with USC about the position.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel said he spoke with Chow on Wednesday afternoon, adding his offensive coordinator "assured me he wants to be at UCLA."

Chow is in the final year of his contract and set to take a hefty pay cut (from $1 million to $640,000) because the money he was being paid by the NFL's Tennessee Titans is up after this season. Although Neuheisel wouldn't comment on the prospect of an extension for Chow, he addressed it indirectly.

"Obviously there can be movement in that regard. That's for the people who sign the checks and make those decisions," he said. "With respect for me, I want to know that my assistant coaches want to be here."

than anything having to do with X's and O's as anything else, not like SC hasn't laid the smack on Chow's offense both times they've seen each other anyway.

I really hope SC counters that UCLA rumor earlier & hires Mike Leach. That would be hilarious. I can't see him and Lane working together though, not even for a year.
69143, Same, except for the USC angle
Posted by MothershipConnection, Thu Jan-14-10 02:04 PM
Like I said in some posts above, I haven't been impressed so far in his first two years here, but if he's gonna put it together it's gonna be this year, cause most of the offense comes back with experience and if he doesn't put it together, he's probably outta here anyway. I think him entertaining the SC job had to do more with money than any great desire to jump back to SC or work with Lane again, he's got one year left here at $640K while I'm sure he was offered well over a mil there. He'd be a fool not to at least listen since he's coming to the end of his coaching career.

Either way, GOOD.

Tennessee Turns Sights on CutCliffe After Muschamp Refuses Offer

It looks like it is official.

Texas' defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp, has turned down a rumored $3 million a year contract to become the new head coach at Tennessee. He will remain at Texas and is still the head coach-in-waiting whenever Mack Brown decides to retire.

With recruiting going live again on Sunday, Tennessee is working feverishly to get a new head coach in place by then. The Vols had Muschamp as number one on their list of candidates, but have now turned their focus to current Duke head coach David Cutcliffe.

Cutcliffe is the former Tennessee offensive coordinator who tutored Peyton Manning, as well as Eli Manning when he was the head coach at Ole Miss. Cutcliffe returned to Tennessee as offensive coordinator in 2006 and helped Erik Ainge rebound after a disastrous 2005.

Cutcliffe would be a great fit at Tennessee.

He knows the area backwards and forwards, knows how to coach quarterbacks, and he won't bolt after one season. It would be a safe hire after the wake of destruction Lane Kiffin left in only 14 months. He has also been a proven head coach. He had turned around Ole Miss, but was then unceremoniously fired the one losing season after Eli Manning left. So far in two years at Duke he has won nine games, and at Duke that is phenomenal!

On top of all that, Peyton Manning recommends Daivd Cutcliffe to become the new head coach at Tennessee.

How can you disagree with that?

69145, Volunteer Sources Say Kiffin Never Embraced Tennessee
Posted by guru0509, Fri Jan-15-10 09:33 AM
lol @ this cornball of a coach...this mfer is lame

In February of 2009, just a few months after Lane Kiffin's tenure began at the University of Tennessee, Vols senior center Josh McNeil walked into the Neyland-Thompson sports complex on the university campus. He paused alongside the Vols 1998 national championship trophy and shook his head in disbelief.

"They'd replaced our highlight video from the past season with Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, and Dwayne Jarrett from USC. I was like, 'Man, I know we were 5-7 last year, but this is Tennessee. Right beside our national title trophy? Come on, man.'"

Walking up the stairs, McNeil, a 6-foot-4 280 pound offensive lineman, says that all the televisions in the complex, at least 20, were tuned to still photos of stellar plays featuring USC athletes. In particular, McNeil paused in front of one photo of Reggie Bush diving into the end zone on a sunlit California field.

"I was thinking, 'Damn, Jamal Lewis went here. Travis Henry went here. It ain't like we never had any running backs of our own.'"

Within a day the pictures and video were down, but the message had been sent. A new era had dawned in Knoxville.

A few months later after witnessing what McNeil said he believed were affronts to the Tennessee tradition that upset him, the player confronted Kiffin. "Coach," he said, "I feel like you're intentionally not embracing UT's traditions."

Kiffin smirked. "Well, whatever Tennessee's been doing isn't working anymore, so we're coming up with something new. Get used to it."

When Kiffin said, "something new," he meant exactly what USC had already done before, McNeil told FanHouse. Multiple team sources confirmed McNeil's claims.

By Junior Day, March 2, 2009, Kiffin had his first crop of potential players, hundreds of then-high school juniors on Tennessee's campus.

The players were divided between offense and defense and placed in front of highlight videos that were designed to show them the Tennessee way of playing football.

As the offensive players sat down on the field, a video flashed on the screen with a word in bold:

DETERMINATION

McNeil watched. "I was thinking, maybe we're going to see Dan Williams block against Kentucky that got us into the SEC championship game (in 2007). That was a pretty huge play."

Instead a USC play featuring Reggie Bush opened the montage.

Another word flashed on the screen.

EXPLOSIVE

More USC highlights followed.

"All the way back to Carson Palmer," says McNeil. "I mean, really, Carson Palmer is explosive?"

At the end of the video, Lane Kiffin addressed the recruits.

"We're going to make this the USC of the South, and the USC of the East Coast," said Kiffin.

McNeil did not hide his disgust. "I was sitting right there and it broke my heart. I came to Tennessee because we were Tennessee, not because we were pretending to be somebody else."

McNeil paused.

"And you know what else? Out of all those clips there wasn't one Oakland Raider highlight. Not one. Now is the same offense, you know? You ever think maybe it has something to do with the players?"

A drum begins slowly beating in the back of a Tennessee meeting room.

Ba-dum, ba-dum

Coach Ed Orgeron, UT's recruiting coordinator, steps to the front of the room.

"One heartbeat," he growls.

The drum beat gets louder and faster.

"I'm about to teach y'all our special team cheer," Coach Orgeron said to a gathering of Tennessee players.

Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum.

"We're going to be crazy about special teams here."

"Now when these two Bushwackers run through the door, you rip your shirts off and scream as loud as you can. One side of the room yell, 'ST,' and the other side yell, 'wild boys.'"

The doors burst open, and two graduate assistants on the football team, walking like the Bushwhackers from the old WWE wrestling days, arms gesticulating awkwardly in front of them, begin madly stomping about the room.

Coach Orgeron screams, "What's the first thing you do before you get in a fight?"

No answer.

"You take your shirt off!" he screams.

Then Coach Orgeron rips off his shirt in front of the team.

The drumbeat is incessant, loud. Players stare at one another.

Coach Orgeron begins to lead the cheer.

"ST!" he screams.

"ST," the team responds.

"Wild boys!" Orgeron screams.

"Wild boys," the team responds.

"Damn, I felt like an idiot with my shirt off," McNeil says. "So did lots of the older guys."

But some of the younger players believed the chant was very cool, McNeil said. It fired them up.

At least it did until they realized that the "new chant" the UT coaching staff introduced to the players was a retread.

"It was a USC thing," McNeil says, "I took an official visit there. They used to say, 'SC', and the other side would say, 'wild boys.' They came to Tennessee and they changed SC to ST for special teams. How lame is that?"

Eventually the shirtless drills fade out.

"We didn't get as hyped up as they wanted us too, everybody would just laugh," says McNeil, "We just all kind of thought it was weird."

That year for spring practice, Lane Kiffin instituted a new rule, profanity was permissible in the songs they would play as the players stretched.

As UT players got loose and children visiting practice ran along the sidelines, hardcore rap lyrics blared alongside Kid Rock anthems.

The current players had no issue with the cursing, some liked it.

But several former UT players were offended when they brought their young children to the practice and heard the music, according to team sources interviewed by FanHouse.

Kiffin didn't care.

"He told me that's how they did it at USC," McNeil says.

As the start of a new season neared, Kiffin and crew focused on their continuing makeover of the Vols.

It was time to practice their team chants.

Kiffin said, "When we're on national TV about to come out of the tunnel, we've got to make it look good."

The entire team lined up in the end zone as part of fall camp.

One side would yell, "It's war time," while another side chanted, "Let's take it outside."

Tennessee players embraced the new tradition. They believed it was theirs and theirs alone.

Until one of the players found it on YouTube. (A similar video can be found here)

Another USC chant.

This time verbatim.

As the season neared, a new controversy arose: Kiffin did not want to say General Neyland's Game Maxims. The tradition, in which the Volunteer players chant the seven maxims beginning with:

"One: The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win."

And ending with:

"Seven: Carry the fight to our opponent and keep it there for sixty minutes."

The maxims trace back to the legendary General Neyland, the all-time winningest coach in Tennessee history and the man the stadium was named after.

Kiffin didn't like the maxims, didn't want to do them. For decades they'd been the final words uttered by every Tennessee player as he left the locker room and rushed onto the field.

Always the head coach led the chant.

No longer.

Kiffin brought in past players and had them lead the team in the chant instead.

Often he was in the coaches' locker room during the chanting. Later, in a departure that altered 70 years of Tennessee tradition, Kiffin didn't take the maxims with the team on the road.

Not a single coach ever said the maxims either, according to team sources.

For McNeil, this confirmed his worst suspicions. "Coach Kiffin cared about Tennessee traditions less than the worst Vol hater in the state of Alabama," he said. "That man's a snake."

But everything wasn't bad at Tennessee.

For instance, there was Lane's dad, Monte, the team's defensive coordinator.

168Share
"Monte was loved by everyone," says McNeil. "He was a great guy, a great football coach, but a better guy."

McNeil pauses for a moment, thinks.

"He and Lane had absolutely nothing in common."
