it's not. mike shot more free throws, made his life closer to the basket = shot more efficiently. as good a shooter, he's never shot above 40% from 3.

given that mj shoots at a higher % and at a higher volume from that distance than kobe does from 15-24, why should it?

kobe is great, but mike had a better low post game, better midrange, drew contact better, shot freethrows better, took better care of the ball, took better shots (timely and within the offense), rebounded better (offensive rebounds), stole better. he had more way of creating offense than kobe ever did or does.
