I play in a pretty competitive morning league at my local YMCA (we hit it hard before people have to go to work).

I'd estimate the bottom 5-10% of the league would be mediocre AT BEST in my league. We got folks who take this shit SERIOUSLY and aren't in it for the money like the pros
65709, holyshit! You're serious too, aren't you?

I'm not saying we can run with the upper echelon of the league (the all-stars, crafty vets, etc.)

But like the bottom 5-10%? The guys that get maybe 3-5 minutes of PT a game? Most of those dudes have mailed it in and let their "skills" (which weren't even top-of-the-league to start) rust away

I'm not saying they'd be BAD in our league. They'd probably be mediocre..picked in the middle of the pack at the beginning of the morning league season.

It's not just your garden variety Y league where people just show up for the exercise and shit

Most teams run set plays, employ match-up zones, and aren't afraid to throw in a little full-court press if they smell blood

You have guys in the NBA who are wallflowers at the end of the bench and who haven't taken off their warm-ups in like two years

I'm just saying they wouldn't be running with the big dogs in our league.

We got guys who play a full game in the morning and still hit the gym for some spinning or nautilus after the game.

We have a former marine who's actually planning on hiking the appalachian trail in the spring

Most of the time, the guys on the end of the bench in the NBA are just there for moral support for the big dogs. They are lucky to see 2 or 3 minutes per game and that's only if nearly all the starters have fouled out.

65750, depends on who's in your league. if you have former d-1
Posted by V3rb, Wed Aug-11-10 08:10 PM
and pro players(players with height too) then maybe.
I've seen leagues like those..A park in a neighborhood near
me lotta d-1 players would come thru and run pick up on the regular
couple summers ago. One of them I know of, who went to my high school,
is now playing pro ball in Spain.

maybe you could shed some light on the players in your league

Posted by Y2Flound, Wed Aug-11-10 09:07 PM
Why is nobody in your Y league in the NBA making league minimum? Shit that is what? $250,000 a year?

You're telling me guys would rather shower and go be accountants or hike the Appalachian trail than make 250,000 a year to warm benches in the nba?

I know you guys are having with the ex-Marine that I mentioned, but that guy is an absolute BEAST on defense and can stick with the shooter-types.

I'm not that knowledgable with the army or marines but I guess the dude went through a LOT of rigorous calisthenics and cross-training exercises when he was serving, helping him with his lateral defensive game.

iono about a YMCA league but let's not front like there aren't alot of leagues out there where Shavik Randolph would have to compete for minutes
the power forward on my team was 6'8 and useta play for PSU and he had a stroke
our center was 6'10 and played D-1 as well back in the day
there are leagues where dudes aren't bums
a dude like kevin ollie would still start of course for most teams but let's not act like there aren't players in the nba that wouldn't get tick in the barry farms league or rucker circuit
cmon
there are a TON of dudes who started on MAJOR D1 teams and only got 2-3 yrs over in europe

65879, A lot of questions about this pic
Posted by calminvasion, Wed Aug-11-10 10:10 PM
Are they playing 3 on 4?

Why is old dude closest to the camera posting up no one past th imaginary 3 pt line?

I assume dude in the all-white w/ the long sleeves is guarding the ball-ok. While I appreciate the defensive stance is he double teaming the post? Pushing him towards the basket and away from the teammate posting at the 3pt line?

And most importantly, doesn't that light seem really low?

self-overestimation and not wanting to give other people credit for their hard work.

motherfuckers deep down inside REALLY think they can beat up boxers and mma fighters, that high stakes poker players are just lucky, that they can run sub 5 second 40's despite not having worked out in 10 years, chicks with rolls thinking they are "thick", it goes on and on, i see it in some form or fashion every day of my life.

I've seen no name NBA benchwarmers play and they are quicker, taller and more efficient than anyone at your local park. They also are conscious of conserving energy and stay at the right place at the right time. The only thing you'll notice is that the're not trying to get hurt at a pickup game so they'll opt out of excessive contact.

They could single handedly destroy your entire team. People who work normal jobs don't have the amount of practice time which enables you to see the game in slow motion.

I'm pretty sure Brian Scalabrinie, DJ Mbenga and Johan Petro and Ben Uzoh could prolly drop 30 on any cat I currently hoop with.

And I was in a Y league AND a park district league.

Park District record 4-6, missed the 'offs
Playing against guys who played D-1, D-2, overseas, high school all area ball.

Y League record 8-1, Won title
Playing against a fraction of the Park District talent (some of those guys played in the park district league too). Evan Turner's cousin was on my team for this league.

Yeah, nothing to do with the post...just wanted to pad my stats.

Posted by celery77, Thu Aug-12-10 10:24 AM
or maybe it was Bally's, anyway, one of those big chains that has a court that gets good run.

couple of summers ago Martell showed up while he was playing, he said he got the man matchup, drove on him for the layup once or twice, so Martell said aight and starting d'ing up hard on him next possession, so my buddy went over a pick + roll and hit a game winning 3 (he admitted the 3 banked in, lol, but against Martell he still took it).

came back to me talking about how the Blazers need to trade dude cuz he's not that hot, guess he got his wish.

he did say Martell was full on fucking around, though, stepping a few feet across half court and knocking down 3s.

so there you go, I personally know a dude that ran an NBA guy off the court at a local gym, lol.

65946, So my boy played with the best IM basketball players at Duke.
Posted by Frank Longo, Thu Aug-12-10 03:47 PM
... and these are guys who played on ranked basketball teams in HS, guys that could have gotten scholarships for some of the worse Division I/better Division II schools but passed them up to come to Duke-- besides, the diploma is sterling on the job market, the IM is fierce and they all tent and go to every Duke game. All of this is a pretty good consolation if you know you aren't going pro, and these guys are the ones who beat the shit out of each other to try to make the squad as a walk-on.

Back to the story.

So one day, I went and played with some of these dudes, and Patrick Davidson rolled through. Patrick Davidson was Luol's roommate, about 6'4, and never got an ounce of tick. He came off the bench AFTER the walk-ons. He wanted to play. I could tell all these dudes secretly thought they were going to SMOKE a Duke basketball player.

You would think we were playing Lebron. This motherfucker was faster than everyone there (including the dunkers), blocking shots left and right, anticipating every move of every player out there, getting boards over guys half a foot taller than him.

The difference between a walk-on at a "basketball school" and your average rec league all-star who maybe played some lesser Division I ball is really big. The difference between a college basketball star and said rec league all-star is massive. The difference between the worst player in the NBA and said rec league all-star is... well, it's laughable to even call it a "difference" as if there's any merit to comparing the two.
65947, A lesson I learned from this post...
Posted by mtbatol, Thu Aug-12-10 04:37 PM
A former college player of the year who comes off the bench in the NBA and a guy who did 15/10 in college would be merely "aaaaaight" in the Y leagues?

Just, pretty interesting stuff... very very interesting stuff... hmmmmmmmm

Posted by SirLau, Thu Aug-12-10 10:15 PM
Ok two things, I'm gonna say.

1. Cory Fisher who plays at Villanova and is a borderline NBA prospect just put up 105 points in a league against a team comprised of some semi-pro players. Safe to say the semi pro dudes are better than cats at the average Y. And this borderline NBA prospect put up triple digits.

2. I played with Pops Mensah Bonsu at the local Y here in Bham who played at GW and played in the league with Toronto and Houston. Dude was rehabbing, and rusty and he was just dominating. He was so much stronger and athletic than anyone in the gym. And the thing is he wasn't playing his "NBA" game, he was working on his weaknesses. He was shooting 3's, running the break, taking cats off the dribble. He was doing things he can't do in the NBA and he was straight slayin' cats.

Actually, some of the guys got a pretty good laugh when I told them you guys thought the Jack Haleys and Haywood Workmans of the world would come in and just start dominating

We got our fall league draft coming up on labor day weekend. I suggested to my boys this morning that we throw in a "player" like Fred Hoiberg or Jared Jeffries and see where they would get drafted (JJ probably pretty high due to height and wingspan)

LMAO though you guys are lucky I'm confident enough in my league to take this all in jest

66083, I'll try and address some things here
Posted by OctavioPaz, Fri Aug-13-10 02:00 PM
1. I never said our morning league was better than the NBA. Come on now...lot of intellectual dishonesty there. The NBA probably has some of the best athletes in the world

2. I don't think too many of us in the morning league could make *serious* runs at the NBA. Do I think some of us would turn some heads if the NBA ran open try-outs? No doubt about it.

3. We have a diverse league. A couple of CEOs, some blue-collar, union types, a professional horticulturist, the ex-marine, someone who did ROTC (?) in college....etc. etc. The professional diversity helps improve the league and intensifies the match-ups (white collar vs. blue-collar rivalry etc. etc.)

4. No drug testing in our league. That does NOT mean we have a lot of people using PEDs. But is the option available? You bet it is.

5. I'd be willing to modify my original statement: The bottom 3-5% of the NBA would be mediocre in our league.

For real, you telling me an Anthony Johnson or an Adam Morrison would come in and all of a sudden transfrom himself into a "King James of the a.m."???? Not happening.....

66140, You realize there's essentially no overlap between Marines and hoops
Posted by Buck, Sat Aug-14-10 11:43 AM
Beyond general physical fitness, these are two entirely different skill sets.

I know about a half-dozen retired Marines myself, and while each of them can field strip an M4 under fire and in a rainstorm, and one of them almost surely knows a dozen ways to kill a man with his bare hands, ain't none of them do a damn thing with a basketball.
66141, Look man
Posted by OctavioPaz, Sat Aug-14-10 11:53 AM
I don't know what his service training actually consisted of and I certainly don't know (haven't asked) how equipped he is at firing assault rifles.

What I DO know is that the guy is like the morning league Revis Island.

YOU CAN'T DRIVE ON HIM

I assume this defensive prowess was something he picked up when he was in the Marines.

He's a jack-of-all-trades type though (like I said, he's taking at least 2 months off in the Spring to hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail) and NOTHING he does ever surprises me anymore.

He's consistently picked in the Top 10 every time we start a new season.

I'm not gonna lie though, his offense is very unrefined and borderline sloppy at times, and he has a bit of a temper.

I've watched a ton of NBA and college though and I would LOVE to see a Chris Duhon or a Charlie Ward-type try to cross him over or take him to the rack. And I'd love to see a one-dimensional Jason Kapono (pretty boy) try to get a clean look with him playing his trademark hound-dog defense.

66142, RE: Look man
Posted by Buck, Sat Aug-14-10 12:53 PM
>I don't know what his service training actually consisted of

I have a good idea what his service training consisted of, and while I'm sure there were plenty of pickup games on base, the USMC doesn't actually waste any time training for hoops.

>and I certainly don't know (haven't asked) how equipped he is
>at firing assault rifles.

Every Marine is a rifleman, so he's probably exceptionally well equipped. If he's still in practice, of course.

>I assume this defensive prowess was something he picked up
>when he was in the Marines.

But that's the thing: why would you assume that? Why defensive prowess? You could as easily say he picked up a filthy jumper in the Marines, or picked up a crossover. None of them make any sense. Again, he may have played pickup games and improved his defense, or he might have just had a good HS coach.

>He's a jack-of-all-trades type though (like I said, he's
>taking at least 2 months off in the Spring to hike a portion
>of the Appalachian Trail) and NOTHING he does ever surprises
>me anymore.

Well, I grew up in Virginia, and I've hiked long stretches of the AT myself, and I know a guy who's done the whole damn thing. And I can say with considerable authority that the ability to walk 15-20 miles per day with a pack on your back also has nothing to do with basketball. I'm pretty good at the hiking, but I'm still a million miles away from the NBA. And no matter how much hiking I do (got a 60-mile trip planned for the fall, in fact), I'm never gonna get any better at basketball.

It's your causality here that's the problem: "he was in the Marine Corps and does a lot of backpacking, therefore, he's really good at basketball." That's a non sequitur.
66143, ^ n*gga sed 'defensive prowess' - this post is a blood diamond.

Dude would be around town and at all the bars getting fucked up and doing crazy drugs every single night for about half the year. Then he would go hike the Appalachian Trail the rest of the time. He did it almost yearly. Hiking the trail is a helluva feat but it doesn't really speak to someone's athletic prowess.

Some of it may be a tad far-reaching, but I have spent enough time between the Rucker and now in DC at spots like Barry Farms and there's a squad over here right now with Junior Burroughs and Sherman Douglas as well as some other cats who used to play at Gtown back in the day. These cats run with young guns in the DMV massive and the level of ball is through the roof. From time to time you'll see some lower bench Wizards out here and they aren't exactly running folks off the court. Just adding that for what its worth.

I think what a lot of you guys don't realize is that the 12th man on every NBA bench has essentially stopped trying/practicing on working on his game.

They are usually there as moral support for the starting 5 OR as some sort of "assistant coach"

Now, where I play, we go YEAR ROUND. Plus, with yearly roster turnover (we have our annual Fall draft), people need to constantly push themselves because it's embarassing to be drafted that much lower (or in some cases.....not drafted at all)

I want to see one of these NBA bench players put in 45 minutes of cross-training or calisthenics AFTER a game. They usually just sit in the whirlpool (even if they haven't played) or go out partying with the cheerleaders

Hell, we have a police officer who usually comes DIRECTLY from a night-time shift and yet consistently drops 15-20 points. I don't think the dude ever sleeps

or getting sent to the development league. He's going extra hard in practice or the rare moments when he gets some tick.

Also, your thing about one-dimensional players: those dudes are one-dimensional COMPARED to the best players in the World. They would probably school any recreational league in most facets of the game.
66191, They are glorified cheerleaders
Posted by OctavioPaz, Sun Aug-15-10 11:56 AM
Next time you watch an NBA game in person, devote a keen eye to those guys at the end of the bench. They never even take off their warm-ups and are usually just yucking it up with people right behind the bench, or the trainers or team interns. Actually, a lot of the time they are usually just ogling the team cheerleaders/dancers.

I went to a Nets game like two seasons ago and when Coach Frank signalled for Trenton Hassell to come in the game (or whoever it was), he looked HORRIFIED. We were ten rows up and had a clear look at what was going on. Seriously, I thought he was going to refuse to enter the game.

66192, ok, so if you don't get to see them play, how do you know how good they are?

that's garbage, they're usually cheering on their team just like anyone else on the bench. you also didn't refute what I said. If they are the closest to being off the team, how do they not keep themselves in shape and impress the coaches in practice? Do you realize how many people in the NBDL players/FAs are waiting to replace them? if they could be beat by some YMCA guys, they wouldn't even be sitting there.

66193, You give these guys WAY too much credit
Posted by OctavioPaz, Mon Aug-16-10 09:00 AM
Come on man, you think these guys that play a few minutes A WEEK are really going all out in PRACTICE?

They don't get out of their warm-ups in the games...they probably don't even get out of them in practice.

Basically, they are like NFL practice squad players except they don't even really practice. They're lounging in the locker-room area, giving soundbites to the press, or doing promotional appearances for local charities and/or troubled, misguided youths.

You also can't discount their role of moral supporter for the stars of the team. For example, Jack Haley was only on the Bulls to provide guidance and support to Rodman

And yes, when Coach Frank called upon Trenton Hassell to come in during crunch time he looked HORRIFIED...like a deer in the headlights. He wanted no part of it.
66194, lol, yeah, I'M the one exaggerating what they can and can't do.

lol, yes, yes i do actually. despite what you think, these dudes are trying DESPERATELY to get some time. so they have to show how much they try in practice so they can get on the court at all during gametime.

>They don't get out of their warm-ups in the games...they
>probably don't even get out of them in practice.

yeah sure, whatever you say dude. these dudes are BARELY on the team, will probably be out of the league in 2 years, and they're lounging. sure.

besides, who exactly do the starters practice against?

>

and you know all of this how exactly? you regularly attend the practices of all 30 teams, huh?

>
>You also can't discount their role of moral supporter for the

yes, i can. because on a 12-man roster in a sport with a ton of injuries you can't really afford to commit a roster spot to moral support.

For example, Jack Haley was only on the
>Bulls to provide guidance and support to Rodman
>

"for example, the only example of this ever happening."

>And yes, when Coach Frank called upon Trenton Hassell to come

ok, whatever, keep using anecdotal evidence. at least you were there for this one, most of this is you just imagining what these guys do at practice. when really, these dudes could not practice for a year and still destroy you.

As I said earlier, you simply can't drive on the marine. I'm pretty sure he has more steals than points. He's like a Bruce Bowen-type, only shorter but in much better shape. His offensive game is severely lacking and he's been known turn the ball over 8-10 times per game.

Now the cop I'm pretty sure played professionally, but I googled him and his name never came up other than official police matters.

This guy is something special. He'll work 10pm-6am, then drive right over IN THE SQUAD CAR to the Y. Dude *claimed* he put the sirens on one morning in order to make tip-off, but I think he was BS'ing. Dude has a sweet jumper which invokes comparisons to a young Thunder Dan Majerle.

His player bio says it all:

The Police Man:

While he isn't a lock down defender like the ex-Marine, we are pretty sure he played professionaly, though google was not able to verify. What we do know about him is he works all night and then might even put on the sirens and race through red lights to get to the game on time.

You may think you have seen the policeman stroking 3's for the Miami Heat, but it is only because his sweet sweet J looks so much like that of a young Dan Majerle. Don't get it twisted though, the policeman comes hard every morning. If you can't find him on the court or the Nautilis, you can probably find him on the corner of 34th and Carson enforcing the law of the land!

The Horticulturalist got his name for the lack of D and leaking out on the fastbreak or "cherry picking" as we in the B-Ball community refer to it.

Nets - Tony Battie, Chris Quinn

Celtics - Marcus Landry, Brian Scalabrine
Bobcats - DeSagna Diop, Acie Law
Bulls - Joe Alexander, Lindsey Hunter
Cavs - Darnell Jackson, Danny Green
Mavs - Matt Carroll, Quinton Ross, DeShawn Stevenson
Nuggets - Renaldo Balkman, Malik Allen
Pistons - DeJuan Summers, Kwame Brown
Warriors - Chris Hunter, Ronny Turiaf
Rockets - Too many injuries to count. Chuck Hayes would be eligible for this list.
Pacers - Solomon Jones, Josh McRoberts
Clippers - Steve Nowak, Mardy Collins
Lakers - DJ Mbenga, Luke Walton
Grizz - Hamed Haddadi, Steven Hunter
Heat - Jamaal Magloire, Joel Anthony
Bucks - Dan Gadzuric, Kurt Thomas
Wolves - Brian Cardinal, Sasha Pavlovic
Hornets - Aaron Gray, Julian Wright
Knicks - Jordan Hill, Jonathan Bender
Thunder - Kevin Ollie, Etan Thomas
Magic - Marcin Gortat, Anthony Johnson
Sixers - Jason Smith, Rodney Carney
Suns - Jarron Collins, Earl Clark

Kings - Kenny Thomas, John Brockman
Spurs - Malik Hairston, Theo Ratliff
Raptors - Reggie Evans, Rasho Nesterovic
Jazz - Kosta Koufus, Kyrylo Fesenko
Wiz - Dominic McGuire, Fabricio Oberto

With the exception of DJ Mbenga and Kevin Ollie, who ran the point for Sparta after Leonidas was felled in battle, I think they all could drop 30.

1. I'm sure I got more enjoyment out of the first 500 or so posts in this thread than he ever could have in making his responses. I mean, the gifs alone shot this post into the stratosphere.

2. Even if dude made all of this up, what exactly is he going to lord over people? "Haha, I made all of OKS believe that I played for a YMCA team and I thought we were better than some of the pros"? Um... burn, I guess? In terms of making unsuspecting posters look dumb, this isn't exactly on the level of "ICP invades The Lesson," or even "Make-a-wish kid visits the Dream Team."
