He still has to be the favorite until someone beats him, yet.......

.....this may BE the year that someone finally beats him.

Sisters if one of them gets hot in a major and now Ivanovic.

The Russians really are running things right now though.
62832, What bothers me is there aren't many true rivalries
Posted by Deebot, Mon Jun-23-08 04:18 PM
especially with Henin gone. Hopefully we get one with Ivanovic/Sharapova, or Ivanovic/Serena.

I wouldn't mind some more fiery girls like Safina coming up.

The other top women's players like Jankovic and Kuznetsova are pushovers when it comes to the semis or final. And any girl not in the top 5 or 7 is REAL sketchy. I'm a Chakvetadze fan but damn, she's ranked like #8 and is not intimidating AT ALL.
62833, didn't they win two Grandslams last yr? damn

62846, That was a great match
Posted by JungleSouljah, Wed Jun-25-08 02:08 PM
Ivanovic needs to work on her damn serve. It's completely unreliable and borderline just bad at times. I figured she'd pull it out.

Can't say much about Safin and Djokovic that hasn't already been said elsewhere. But did anyone see the post match press conference? Djokovic had the balls to call Safin "mentally unstable" after Safin whooped his ass. Gotta love the Serbs.

Her serve sucked in the first half of the match but the net was on her side. She better get her fine ass to the final, I need some eye candy as my blood sugar level is low.

Marat ethered Joke at the press conference just as he did on the court.

Was Djokovic saying he was hoping Safin's level of play would drop since he's known to be a head case?
Or was he just talking without thinking like he usually does?

62877, these post match interviews they do are getting ridiculously tedious
Posted by Deebot, Fri Jun-27-08 01:59 PM
it's mostly the players' fault though, you can get the sense that Fowler is annoyed sometimes too trying to get something out of these players

Q: "Talk about your match a little..."
A: "Well it was a tough match, I just tried to play my game and I'm happy that I'm through"

Q: "What about these upsets! How do you feel about the draw?"
A: "I didn't see the match, I don't look at the draw"

62878, I don't know why they bother.
Posted by kurlyswirl, Sat Jun-28-08 01:06 AM
They could just air the same interview from two days ago, or two years ago for that matter.

It's far too rare that anyone has anything interesting to say.

It was always a tough match. The next match will be a tough match.

They always just try to go for their shots, stay aggressive, play their game, blah, blah, blah.

They don't pay attention to their draw or watch anyone else's matches. (Yeah, right.)

They don't pay attention to what the media is saying about them or anyone else. (mm-hmm)

I feel bad for the players being required to attend press conferences after every match. They get asked the same stupid questions over and over and over and over...No wonder even the nicest guys like Fed and Rafa have been snapping at them a little.

I did enjoy "Alla K." talking shit about Maria, though. lol

I loved that! "She's not a very outgoing person...she's starting to say hi now though" LOL

I just wanted to add that the only thing redeeming about Roddick are his interviews. He's one of the most honest and actually thinks about the questions.

And I don't mind when Rafa or Serena visit the studio, because even though they have the cliche responses on lock they at least bring some charisma to the table. Did you see Chakvetadze today? It was like someone had a gun and forced her in

Totally. I don't care about his matches, but I find his interviews very entertaining. Djokovic's interviews used to be really entertaining, too, right up until about the end of last year's US Open.

Safin is another good one.

“Hate is a very strong word. I just despise her to the maximum level just below hate.”

took him to 5 sets last year...should be good stuff. Even though I like Rafa now and think a rematch with Fed in the final would be cool, I gotta roll with Youzh on this. I don't mean I'm predicting him to win, but gotta root for it.

62896, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal
Posted by be_yourself, Sat Jun-28-08 04:24 PM
were both awesome in their respective matches today. Either one of them has a really good chance of winning the title.

Much as I like Federer, his game just doesn't excite me at all. I like to see a bit of fire on the court.
62897, you think Andy Murray would beat Nadal or Fed on this big a stage?

cmon
62898, RE: you think Andy Murray would beat Nadal or Fed on this big a stage?
Posted by be_yourself, Sun Jun-29-08 12:42 PM
I'm not denying for one minute that Nadal or Federer would be extremely difficult to beat, but I'm looking at the situation more in terms of potential. Murray would have an outside chance IF he continues to play the way he is at the moment. He's very focused right now and very talented. He would also be the underdog so would have nothing to lose, plus he would have the support of the home crowd behind him.

Anything can happen at a tournament such as this, upsets happen all the time. All I'm saying is never say never.

62899, um, Fed's won this tournament the past five years straight
Posted by Bombastic, Sun Jun-29-08 01:16 PM
so while 'upsets happen all the time', they really haven't in recent years when we're talking about Fed/Nadal winning every Grand Slam in the past 3-4 years other than Djokovic winning the last Australian.

The only 'upset' I see happening at this stage now is Nadal finally beating Fed in the final but we'll see.

62900, So do you really think it is cast in stone?
Posted by be_yourself, Sun Jun-29-08 03:05 PM
How about these:

Goran Ivanisevic entered Wimbledon 2001 as a wild card and won the title against Pat Rafter who had been ranked as world no. 1 (albeit in 1999 for one week, but it shows his calibre). I was rooting for Goran that year and predicted him to win (not that it has anything to do with this argument, I just felt like sharing it LOL) - yes, a wild card!! Pretty amazing achievement on his part I would say.

Jimmy Connors beat John McEnroe (defending champion) in 1982. Jimmy was in his thirties - not old per se but old in sporting terms. Awesome!

Maria Sharapova beat Serena Williams (defending champion) in 2004 after only her second ever appearance at Wimbledon.

Whilst I agree that it is highly unlikely that Federer will be beaten, (five times in a row is a remarkable achievement), as I said before, I never say never.

62901, if you were gonna go back 25 years you shoulda snuck Pat Cash in there
Posted by Bombastic, Mon Jun-30-08 05:07 PM
that was a shocker, as was an unseeded 17-year-old Becker winning his first one in '84.

No, I wouldn't say it's set in stone but Wimbledon on the men's side has been the most predictable result of any tournament in the past three-four years. With Djokovic out, I'm not convinced it will be much different this year although I get a feeling Nadal has a shot at beating Fed in the final.
62902, wow wtf, either Tipsarevic, Schuettler, Cilic, or Clement will be in the semis
Posted by Deebot, Sun Jun-29-08 02:15 AM
and it'll be the winner of Tipsarevic/Schuettler for sure. Maybe Janko finally breaks through

62906, I aint know Venus and Serena was playing doubles
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jun-30-08 01:26 PM
62907, Jelena Jankovic will never ever win a slam
Posted by Deebot, Mon Jun-30-08 04:16 PM
and I'm getting beyond sick of her complaining
62908, So, with JJ and Sveta out before the semis...
Posted by kurlyswirl, Tue Jul-01-08 01:33 AM
...that means Ana stays #1, right?

Excellent.

Oh, and yeah, JJ was extra moody today, but I think she did have a point about the scheduling. It didn't make any sense to have Anna and Nicole on Court 1 and relegate Venus to Court 2 and Jelena (as the remaining top seed) to Court 18.

62909, another classic Gasquet performance
Posted by benny, Mon Jun-30-08 04:52 PM
the game was on TV at the office, I left with Richie leading 2 sets to nill, 4-4 in the 3rd, thinking he had it on lock. To be honest he'd impressed me with his attacking game and overall sharpness. Murray meanwhile looked like a goofy kid unable to summon winners when he really needed them (except to save break points). So I go for a run, and of course when I get home and check the final score Gasquet lost in 5 sets. Now I didn't watch the last 2 1/2 of those, but I'd be willing to bet good money that the result had more to do w/ another Gasquet mental breakdown than anything else.
I swear, this guy has a nice game (and unbelievably good backhand, perhaps second only to Fed's), but his lack of mental fortitude is killing his career.
Oh well, at least Clement got through.

he wasn't getting as much depth on his forehand, and Murray was all adrenaline from the crowd. Gasquet stayed pretty positive though...

yeah I was definitely talking out of my ass there, but he definitely lacks the killer instinct. Which is pretty typical, as far as French athletes go.
Still it will be funny to see how much pressure the always-understated British press will bestow on Murray starting tomorrow. Can't blame the kid for reminding everyone he's actually Scottish.

From the score, it looks like an epic comeback.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that ESPN2 didn't show much of this match. Possibly not much more than match point.

...and Cilic/Clement. Or did I blink and miss it? I was too busy fast forwarding through reairings of matches I already watched (grr) and Dick Enberg's stupid thing about Court 2. I'm also pissed that the West Coast got gypped out of 3 hours of coverage on ESPN2 because of NBC's "coverage embargo" from 10am - 1pm in all time zones.

BTW, am I the only one who really likes those Terence Stamp-narrated intros?

Posted by chief1284, Tue Jul-01-08 12:44 PM
Awesome awesome match. I joined halfway through the second set andwhen he dominated that and the second of the 3rd it really looked over. But Ancic battled away, got the third. Then the 4th was totally even and Ancic just scraped it. The fifth is where both the intensity and the quality of tennis went through the roof. Loads of long rallies. Vedasco was pissed like you wouldn't believe. Swearing at the umpires in Spanish (I don't think they understood). At one point he hit a passing shot that looked in but was given out and he had a real McEnroe moment. Every shot after that, even when it was blatantly in or out he was giving the umpire a stare. It was real drama.

Then the fifth just never looked like it was going to end. I hardly ever seen such a close matchup. At around 8-8 Ancic broke, but then Vedasco broke straight back with a love game. So much quality tennis and finally Ancic sorted it, and Vedasco literally ran out of the court and looked like he was ready to kill someone.

Genuinely it was one of the best tennis matches I've even seen. I don't know if I was swayed by the fact I saw it live but at the end Dementieva came on and I was just too exhausted to watch any more tennis and went and had a break. I couldn't believe how little press coverage had been given to the game cos it was, in my opinion, as good as tennis gets.
62918, I envy you, dude.

62938, the thing with that though is that Henman was actually pretty good.
Posted by Kula-Mae, Wed Jul-02-08 12:58 PM
Admittedly I'm biased because I love the serve and volleyers, but after a while, you could at least count on Tim to routinely make the quarters or the semis at Wimbledon. He gave the home crowd *some* semblance of hope.

This is Murray's first time in any quarterfinal of a major, and you'd have thought he won the title the way the British press reacted after that Gasquet match.
62939, I disagree
Posted by chief1284, Thu Jul-03-08 10:09 AM
I definitely feel Murray will have a better career than Tim. Henmann was always technically good but I never ever felt he would win a major. I think Murray could. On his day Murray is a dangerous player. Tim always looked like he wanted to please the grannies eating strawberries and cream rather than go out and blast someone away. Henmann needed to eat some meat, beef up and get some aggression into him. Hurray is a prick but I like that. He upsets all the old fashioned fans at Wimbledon.

Still I do echo the general sentiment that our press massively over-hypes anyone British. Murray is still a pretender and got clowned by Nadal.
62940, I was on the Guardian Uk site this morning laughing at that...

Just because stories of their demise have been greatly
exaggerated.

And its nice to see how great athletes are completely
unfukwitable when they focus.

People can say what they say about the sisters(and
Venus in particular).

When they are on grass and playing well, they
might be the GOAT.

Venus made her semifinal opponent look like a 13 year old girl most of the match, and she's #5 in the world

>When they are on grass and playing well, they

I still have a hard time comprehending how Venus struggles SO MUCH at the French though. Even with the completely different surface, talent level alone should automatically write the sisters into the quarterfinals at least

and how she sees serena.

in the past, when venus looked across the net to see serena on the other side, she always saw her little sister.

when serera looked across the net and saw venus, she just sees another bitch in her way to another title.

if venus looks at the match the same way serena does, i'll take venus to win it all.

the last time venus got truly pissed, she went and a two-year tear in which she won wimbledon and the u.s. open twice, and a gold medal.

if she's even remotely looking at serena like she's martina hingis, it's curtains for serena.

of the two, serena has the best all-around and most complete game.

but venus owns the power game between them.

63015, RE: Wimbledon 2008
Posted by all stah, Sun Jul-06-08 10:12 AM
This is reminding me of seles and graf...

Graf was killing everybody, but then seles came out of nowhere and took over women's tennis, killing graf every time they played, 7-1 record against graf...graf had an inferior complex against her, and I think federer has the same against nadal

But of course the stabbing happened and graf went on to become the greatest female player ever.

but nadal's career will be short lived , ....he plays too hard, no way his body holds up

63016, Yeah I was gonna say Nadal might fizzle out in 2 years
Posted by kwez, Sun Jul-06-08 10:17 AM
And he's only what...23 or something? His game simply isn't built to last him a long time.

...and as I say that, looks like he slipped and injured himself.

He was like 5-1 and lost the damn set...That is a mental issue...
63020, RE: ass whipping
Posted by the root, Sun Jul-06-08 11:19 AM
definitely mental - federer playing consistently passive every time the point means anything. creepy to watch his game implode on every break point. anyway, he needs some swag, if not he doesn't deserve this shit. dude needs to play like a CHAMPION, even if that means he gets beat.
63021, Nadal will not play past 3 or 4 years
Posted by all stah, Sun Jul-06-08 10:18 AM

63022, Agassi played till his mid 30's with the same style

Agassi relied on superior placement and htting the ball as early as possible to get you off balance.

I say he'll be around until at least 28. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking. :-)

But considering Fed still has 7 more major titles than Rafa, I think he's still more than deserving of the #1 spot.

Rafa has a stranglehold on #1 in this year's ATP race, though.

Fed has a lot more points than Rafa to defend in this second half of the season and, with today's results, Fed is at 6600 and Rafa is up to 6055.

Incidentally, Djokovic is now at a *fairly* distant 4945. Whew! - it's not long ago that he was, like, 160 points away from Rafa.

it was the perfect antidote to my unbelievably brutal holiday weekend hangover, gave me something to focus on.

Between this match and getting the news that I had scored a ticket to Stevie Wonder tomorrow night at the Hollywood Bowl, what seemed like a long day improved dramatically.

I had Nadal over Fed and Venus over Serena at the beginning of the tournament but since I: a) Didn't bet any money on it, & b) somehow forgot to post that here.......I guess that doesn't much matter, lol.

Great day of tennis tho, I don't know if I'm ready to go as far as Mac (btw, he was whylin' out towards the end of that broadcast) and say 'best ever' but it was pretty damn good and certainly worthy of being in the conversation.

It had all the elements.

Anyway, good job to Nadal. I'm a fan of this guy after seeing the past two grand slam finals. I can get over the pants issue I've had for so long. He's humble, gracious, and pretty damn good.

I feel sorry for Fed now, only because he'll have to deal with infinite "do you think Nadal will overtake you soon?" questions, and he doesn't deserve it. Nadal deserves #1 soon (although he prolly won't get it until next year clay court season), but Fed doesn't deserve to get hammered by the media.

Due to the rain delays, it's taking up about 32% of my DVR space, but I don't think I'll delete it even though I'll be recording the ESPN Classic rerun tonight. Seeing Nadal rub his finger across his etched name won't be on ESPN Classic. Seeing Nadal go down the stairs and towards the cheering crowd won't be on ESPN Classic. Seeing Fed being interviewed by John and letting go a whimper before the hug won't be on ESPN Classic. Seeing Nadal's face just as he noticed Fed was crying after the Johnny Mac hug won't be on ESPN Classic.

You're right, dude. The questions have been asked since his loss in Australia. I can't imagine how many more times he'll have to answer the same question(s). I wonder if he's going to blow up at the media or if he'll just keep reiterating that he's set the bar so high for himself that expectations have been wildly high for ... ever. His patience and grace will be tested now that he has to see someone else in the spotlight and answer the question(s) everyone has had to answer for years.

This will definitely motivate him for the rest of the year though. Getting his but kicked in Paris AND losing at the AELTC? To the same guy? Dubai, here he comes!

Dammit, I didn't think about all that before I deleted. All I was thinking about was that I knew where I could find a high quality torrent of BBC's coverage, and this match was taking up beaucoup space on my DVR (I was deleting stuff left and right!).

Argh. Well, I'm sure that stuff is on YouTube.

He was already a little salty in the post-match press conference. Not that he's not justified.

He mentioned the darkness and the "conditions" during the on-court interview after the match. Is he making a big deal about this, or is the media blowing this statement out of proportion? I read three articles that dedicated some article space to this subject, and one was a local newspaper.
63131, so stupid
Posted by Deebot, Mon Jul-07-08 04:42 PM
BOTH PLAYERS HAD TO PLAY IN IT
63132, I don't think he thought it as big a deal as the media did.
Posted by kurlyswirl, Mon Jul-07-08 05:31 PM
He just said something to the effect of he would hate to think he may have lost the tournament because of the lack of light. But he also said neither one of them wanted to stop the match and come back tomorrow unless they were tied at 8-8. I mean, I'm sure if the lack of light was so bad in a match this critical, he would've said something and the officials probably would've gone along with it.

And yeah, like Deebot said, they both had to play in it and Rafa said he "couldn't see nothing," but he still managed to win. lol

Easily the best tennis match I have seen in my life, and im guessing in the lives of many others.....epic, breathtaking, beautiful, inspiring....the list of adjectives you could use goes on and on.

Wow. The grandeur and tension of this match was just too ridiculous to even attempt to describe.

Sampras never did. And he is still probably going to be up there with the total grand slams...he is only 26.
63137, Exactly, what did Sampras ever do in the French?
Posted by theeraser, Mon Jul-07-08 09:17 AM
Fed's lost to the eventual champ, and best clay court player ever, 4 yrs in a row. Sampras lost to the eventual champ in the semis once??

>Sampras never did. And he is still probably going to be up
>there with the total grand slams...he is only 26.

Federer won precisely **one** more match than Sampras did - Fed made the Finals (and got curbstomped. 6-1, 6-3, 6-0), Sampras made the semis. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Please do, however, name a CLAY COURT SPECIALIST who defeated Sampras in the finals at Wimbledon? You can't.

Sampras also played against/defeated/has a winning record against how many current Hall of Famers? Courier, Agassi, Wilander, Edberg, Becker, Rafter, Chang, Lendl, Connors, Jimmy Mac. Toss out Jimmy Mac and Connors as both were nigh octogenarians when he played them.

20-14 vs Agassi, 12-7 vs Becker, 2-0 vs Connors, 16-4 vs Courier, 8-6 vs Edberg, 5-3 vs Lendl, 3-0 vs McEnroe, 2-1 vs Wilander, 12-4 vs Rafter. Forgot his record vs Michael Chang. There was FAR better competition then than there is now. Don't even know how much you know about tennis but even cats like Goran Ivanisevic, Pat Cash, and Miloslav Mecir (The Big Cat) were quite solid. Poor Aaron Krickstein blew his knee out and Todd Martin tried hanging around. Brad Gilbert and his fear of pace...ugh.

And precisely which players today are a lock for the Hall of Fame? Federer and Nadal. Who else? Lleyton Hewitt maybe? Well past his prime.

Wtf, Sampras moseyed out there with a walker and still took R-Fed to 5 sets.

Kobe (Federer) vs Jordan (Sampras) all over again. Kobe's great TODAY, but please stop mentioning him in the same breath as Jordan.
63140, cmon, Nadal's more than just a clay court specialist

Is that why he's won five grand slams - four of them being the FRENCH?

He loses to James Blake in the US Open in '06, loses to Fernanado Gonzalez (who?) at the Australian in the quarters, David Ferrer (quasi who?) in the fourth round of the US Open in '07, lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (who?) in the semis of the Australian in '08.

Sooo...he's like 114-2 on clay courts, won 81 in a row on clay courts, 20-1 in clay court finals, is considered the best clay court player ever, has not enjoyed nearly the same success on hard courts or grass...but isn't a clay court specialist.

Ok

(was lurking and hoping someone was going to say that Agassi was a clay court specialist. what a faux pas that would have been)
63143, clay-court specialists don't win Wimbledon.
Posted by Kula-Mae, Tue Jul-08-08 12:38 AM
Remind me - how many Wimbledon titles (never mind three straight finals) have Thomas Muster (who never even won a fucking MATCH at Wimbledon), Sergi Bruguera, Gustavo Kuerten, Carlos Moya, Gaston Gaudio, Juan Carlos Ferrero etc, have won?

Furthermore, for you to say that he doesn't enjoy the same success on grass makes no sense, even putting his win at Wimbledon aside - the grass court season is three weeks long. How often does he have the chance to play on grass? There's no telling how many grass titles he might have if the season was longer. Both Pete and Roger have 10 grass titles, it just so happens that the majority of them are the most important one to win. 10 titles compared to the number of titles they both have overall is pretty minute.

because making the quarters & semis of Grand Slams is a cake walk, huh? if he routinely loses before the 4th round you may have a point, but that's not the case

clay court specialists will at best reach the 2nd/3rd round at Wimbledon, hell some of them even chooses not to play...this was Nadal's 3rd consecutive final (and he won in Queen's too this year), for a "clay court specialist" that he is, he sure plays pretty good on grass

>Ok

Nadal is good regardless of surface, and Federer is one of the greatest players of all time

EDIT: and what Kula-Mae said
63145, My love for Pete Sampras is well established around these parts
Posted by Kula-Mae, Mon Jul-07-08 11:40 PM
but as the years have gone by, I've slowly but surely become a Federer fan. And at this point, I really think there's nothing left to criticize. That final the other day sealed it - even in a losing effort, what he did in that match, ESPECIALLY to come back the way he did, was incredible. I can no longer hate on the dude, and I honestly wonder why I was so anti-Federer in the first place. I think it has something to do with not wanting to admit that someone might be better than Pete. He's a humble, gracious champion, and he's deserving of every accolade he's gotten over his period of dominance.

Sampras is my idol, my all-time favorite player, the guy who I looked up to as a kid (and still do)....and I guarantee you he would have lost that match in straight sets. I guarantee it.

Forget the competition, forget who's in Federer's generation as opposed to the people Sampras played (I fucking hate Jim Courier, anyway), toss all of that out of the window. It's not important. Pete was great, but I'm willing to bet that Federer would be just as successful if you stuck him in any era. All you have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. Besides, after that match, I don't know how Federer's "place in history" or anything like that could be the foremost thing on anyone's mind in the first place. When you're getting quality like THAT, who cares?
63146, im SO glad i got to watch this with my grandma.

but that was some of the most insane tennis i've ever seen. for both of the guys to be hitting the ball that hard in the 5th set, just unbelievable.

The best tennis match ever! Tears streamed down my face in waves as Rafael Nadal conquered Roger Federer for his first Wimbledon title. This guy was running around, hitting otherworldly groundstrokes and making the world BELIEVE he is the #1 player in tennis. Unfortunately for Roger, he does not have Rafa's arms. Fed needs to get in the gym a little more and learn how to bully guys around with strength, like Nadal. Times have changed, and Roger can no longer win EVERY match from finesse and tactics alone.

And how about the conditions! Two rain delays, and pure DARKNESS at the finish! Rain delays are tough on players because you all of a sudden have to stop the match and go into a different mindset. And once you get back on the court, you have to try to find the intensity right away. Playing in darkness hinders your ability to see the ball, and can result in alot of mistimed shots. It's a pity the match had to finish this way, but it added alot of drama to the whole event. Could you imagine a carry over to the next day to play only a few games for a grand slam CHAMPIONSHIP?! Both players would have gotten 0 sleep.

I'm not going to predict a US Open championship for Rafa yet, but I believe he has gained alot of confidence from this match. I still see Federer as the favorite. See you in New York!
63160, lol. Thanks for stopping by, Luke.
