24315, Benitez aims to become Reds great (swipe) Posted by Pengedragon, Sun May-22-05 03:49 PM
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has targeted becoming the most successful manager in the club's history.
Benitez hopes the first of his trophies will come with a win over AC Milan in the Champions League final on 25 May.
"I was at Extremadura, Tenerife and Valencia and we had the best statistics in the history of each club," he said.
"I have done it at three clubs. Now I will try and do the same here. It will be very, very difficult I know because the history of this club is so big."
Benitez, 44, has set himself a major task considering the exploits of the club's former managers in Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan, who made Liverpool into one of the most successful teams ever both domestically and in Europe.
"I have 20 years of my life as a manager yet and I have four more years left on my contract here and that is a lot of time," added Benitez.
"I am very confident and I want to win things. I know there are good teams in Europe and here, but if you don't believe in yourself, it will be impossible."
The Reds boss has cited the win over AC Milan's fellow Italian club Juventus as helping instil a belief among his players that they could win the club's fifth European Cup.
And he says comments from the Milan camp describing Liverpool as fortunate to be in the final are not proving an extra spur to win at the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul.
He said: "It's not important what people say about us. We will just work really hard at our preparation and game plan and not listen to anyone from outside.
"What is said doesn't motivate me, I don't need any more motivation. I already have a lot of it."
Reds captain Steven Gerrard echoed the sentiments of Benitez and is adamant Milan will underestimate Liverpool at their peril.
"We have always been the underdogs and we will be the underdogs on the 25th in Istanbul, everyone thinks Milan will just have to turn up to beat us," said the 24-year-old.
"But they will be in for a really big fight, we are up for it and we are confident that we will be able to surprise everyone again.
"The Champions League has brought out the best from this side, there is great belief and confidence amongst us all.
"We have gone all the way to the final and beaten some fantastic teams and we now are really confident.
"There's a tough task ahead but we are not going to Istanbul just to enjoy the experience, we are going there to win it."

24317, Cafu dreams of Champions' glory (swipe) Posted by Pengedragon, Sun May-22-05 03:52 PM
The only one missing from Marcos Cafu's CV is the Champions' League, while Hernan Crespo battles Pippo Inzaghi for a starting spot in Istanbul.
“This is a trophy that I have always dreamed of winning and the only one that I have yet to lift,” said the Brazilian defender.
“Ever since I won the Intercontinental Cup with Sao Paolo against Milan 13 years ago I have wondered what it would be like to challenge for the European title. We won that game 3-2 in Tokyo and it remained in my mind. Now I’ll finally have the chance to find out.”
Cafu was still at Roma when Milan were last in the Final, having beaten Juventus on penalties in 2003, so this will be his first Champions’ League showdown.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti claimed earlier this week that he has already decided the starting eleven that will face Liverpool, but newspapers in Italy maintain there is some element of doubt.
The main question surrounds who will partner Andriy Shevchenko, as Pippo Inzaghi and Hernan Crespo are battling for one place.
The fact that Crespo played for almost all of the 3-3 draw with Palermo on Friday suggests that he will not be in the starting line-up, but his impressive performance in that tie could push Ancelotti into a rethink.
Serginho bagged a brace against Palermo and has also been on fine form recently, so the Brazilian could come in as a substitute to unleash his pace on Liverpool.
The Milan squad will leave Malpensa airport at 4pm on Monday to arrive in Istanbul at 7.30pm local time.

It absolutely kills me to say this, but I'm very worried about Milan, and my confidence is not so high at this point.
If they play like they did against Man U, I think they'll win 2-0 or 3-1.
If they play like they have since the PSV second leg, they'll lose 1-0.
Here's hoping for the former.

as they're my uncle's team but of course when 'Pool and the Blues played each other it was all pool that day.
Cisse looked good his last appearence scoring twice, so does that mean they'll play him instead of Baros or the two together? I'd say Djibril takes his place.
Celtic are my other team (too lazy to find that post).

24325, RE: I like Chelsea too Posted by Bridgetown, Mon May-23-05 04:37 PM
I dunno; how's Baros been? One thing I love about Pool, and this was under Houllier and still under Benitez, is how they don't go with snap decisions and just throw in the hot new thing (they just buy them and look to offload them in the offseason). All kidding aside, I think the lineup should be approached with a cool head that may very well out-challenge AC.

And you'll never get a job!! - Sign on Sign on!
But seriously I really want pool to win. If they sit back, however, and try to hit on the counter, which Rafa loves doing, Milan will pick them off easily.
If they go all out and have a go, which they did against Arsenal early in the second half at Highbury this season - they can do it!
Come on you reds!!

so anyone who predicts anything aet needs the 90 min draw to get the points

24337, ok this is the rule Posted by Pengedragon, Wed May-25-05 09:26 AM
because i am confusing myself here :D
if no extra time then its simple, the score at 90 mins is the score
if it goes aet, the score at 120 minutes counts as the final score for competition purposes
PENALTIES DONT COUNT
so a tie at 120. 1-1, 2-2, whatever, will go down as a draw for competition purposes
thats seems fair, non ?

it would be grotesque if liverpool would win the damn thing and then play uefa-cup next year.

HES FUCKIN HRORIBLE..HE HASNT DONE SHIT IN HIS ENTIRE LIVERPOOL CARRREER, AND ON TOP OF THAT HE'S BEE NHURT..WTF!1? stick to what got u here..they dont have enough in midfield...biscan, if he's not injured or ruled out by suspension, obviousyl shouldve played..if not him, then hamann..just fuckin stupid...i guarantee theyd have been a lot less likely to give up soemthing on a set piece...theyve been horrible on set pieces for the last 3 years but theyve been good lately since theyve had biscan in there...sooo fuckin stupid. and if u wanted to give milan a differnt look, a surprise, fuckin start cisee! someone that can actually do something..fuck harry kewell..the minute i saw him on the starting line up, i knew it was over..its relaly taht fuckin simple

|
24371, this shit is so simple Posted by UncleClimax, Wed May-25-05 02:32 PM
kaka is owning this fuckin game. its so simple. liverpool dont have the extra defensive midfielder (hamann/biscan) that wouldve been stopping him running free and picking fools apart. traore looks horrible. everytime kaka runs through and is face to face with the back four, all the liverpool defenders foolishly flock to the ball, and then crespo or shevchenko fan their runs out wide where theres space to have a picnic in. gerrard is fuckin anonymous. liverpool need two strikers. they needed two strikers from the jump, but now they really really fucckin need cise out there.. two goals down..game is over, espeically if liverpool keep the same team and tactics out there.
EDIT! ooh so crespo scored while i was typing this...lol great. this'll end up the most lopsided CL final ever...wahts the record? milan could end up with 7 or 8, no joke.

i have praised benitez enough in the past, now he gets the criticism
why change the succesful 4-5-1 with hamman protecting the back 4 allowing alonso and gerrard to play, to leaving out hamman all together to play an extra striker and burdening the other midfielders with extra defensive work ?
this against a team who have in kaka possibly the best player in the world in that position between midfield and attack that hamman is supposed to be controlling
crazy decision that has backfired spectacularly
some nice play by milan i must add, that 3rd goal was a beautiful thing

That smicer shot was SICK, plus Dida didnt get the best jump on it anyways. The penalty may have been questionable (did look like he got caught on the foot) but Xabi made sure to put his rebound away top shelf.
The game has noticeably slowed down...Liverpool looks to be settling back on defense and trying to catch a counter (like they nearly just did with Cisse but alas offsides).
What a fucking game though, I've never seen the game swing so quickly.

shevchenko must feel like shit.
dudek's double save in the 119th minute was crazy. the save of the year. and theres no way they can not have liverpool back to defend the trophy next season...it'd just be stupid.
before the season, i predicted valencia would win the CL, cuz i thought the uefa cup winners would translate into CL sucess, a la porto..but no, its the coach that matters, not the team. got that wrong..hehe. so whoever the Cska coach coaches next year will win the CL?
gerrard is the truth. lol he and kaka switched roles in the 2nd half.
i had a lot more stuff to say, but i guess i'll remember later. this is great.

I hope Jerzy Dudek's seat drops out of the Liverpool team plane and he falls to the ground in Milan where he can be ripped to shreds.
I hope Steven Gerrard falls after someone grazes him with their arm and breaks his kneecaps. That penalty was crap. (of course, I say that knowing full well Milan choked there...but the officials didn't help with that bad boy)
As for Serginho...worst start to PKs ever.
Sheva deserved better...lucky fuckin Polack.
I hope Liverpool is swallowed by the earth tonight.

2nd half..well i was suprised not to see Cisse, Gerrards header went in, i thought it was nothing more than consolation. Smicer scores and the everyone went nuts, seriously FUCKING nuts, i got soaked from flying beer coz the belief was outta this world.. Then we get a penalty...fuck me, i couldnt watch it, hands over my eyes job.. i was scared. When we eventully got the ball in the net it was bedlam.
extra time was much of a muchness... iknew it would be cagey
penalties...wellllll, 2 great saves from Dudek, who woulda thought Shevvers ( the best striker in the world) woulda missed, but he did...
the rest they say is history.

jezus
liverpool were rank in the first half dissallowed goal! (he looked even) they improved in the second, AC Milan kept playing well LIverpool got 2 great goals (well, Gerrard should have been marked and that guy should have chased Smicer instead of tying his shoelace, but they weren't big defensive errors like 'pool's) Milan lost the place and let them get a penalty (bit of a dive, mind) the boy MISSES the penalty then sticks in the rebound! game continues more evenly, AC have the better chances extra time! Shevchenko and Tomasson SHOULD have finished it penalties and psychological warfare! Milan fans should have gotten out to support their team more
one thing though. for a UEFA final, the rules are so lax. One of the liverpool goals should have been halted for an offside flag. That guy didn't get sent off, which it says in the rules (does it not?). Players standing inside the D and inside the box for the penalty. Dudek came way off his line for the second penalty (shoot out).
nice that it was played in good spirit

3 goals in 6 minutes, and dida blocks the penalty...
during halftime we were talking about how shitty you must feel as a supporter if you trvel to istanbul and get a ticket on the blackmarket for a shitload of money and then you are behind 0-3.
and then it turned out to be the best night in the life of a liverpool supporter.
it reminded me of the uefa-cup final a few years ago agains vigo...how was it, they were behind 1-3 and won 5-4...
maybe they should be in the finals every year...
shows you how gross this cl-thing is...liverpool being faaaaaar away from being a champion and winning the cl...
i love this game!
congratulations reds, i'm a bit envious, i wonder how it feels to be a supporter of a team that wins the cl... (or even qualifies for it...borussia mönchengladbach for life...!!!)

24495, How sweet it is! Posted by OTS, Thu May-26-05 01:47 PM
After the worst start imaginable. They were just scared shitless in the first half. What a fu**in ball by Kaka on that third goal. I still had some hope though if we could get an early goal and thanks to captain Stevie's great header we did just that. Smicer with a nice low drive and u just had that feeling...then Gerrard wins the penalty and it's complete elation, turned agony turned elation again in a matter of seconds. Damn Xabi don't play with us like that!
What a horrible night for Schev. Gets stoned on a free-kick, absolutely robbed at the end of the 2nd extra period (unbelieveable saves) and then goes on to miss the penalty. One of those nights, though it was a poorly struck penalty anyway.
Dudek with the crazy legs had Serginho & Pirlo shook. There aren't many things worse then losing on penalties, coversely of course there aren't many things better, especially when it's for the European Cup!
Y'all can have your league titles and undeserved F.A. Cups. Cause we won the big one baby and I still can't believe it.
Guaranteed that they'll be defending it next year. It's only logical. Get rid of Arsenal, they NEVER do shit in Europe anyway, you know when it really matters! Haha, woooooooooooooooooooooo.

I can agree with that 100%
Honestly I think it does kind of sucks that the champ can't play next year to defend their title. I read somewhere that Real Madrid won it one year and they gave them the final CL spot over Zaragosa (I think it was Zaragosa). So instead of having Everton fucked over, they should knock out Arsenal, that would be very sweet!

Considering that Everton didn't get to go because of "that" incident (we won't utter its name), it really should be Everton that gets to go... especially since they legally earned the spot. What Spain did was more or less a function of their continuing bending of the rules in Real's favor, in my humble opinion.

the prize ? you take on liverpool in a pre pre qualifying round for the right to enter next seasons comp
peace
