That Gibson observation is delightful, even as it bums me out for being so aggressively anti-Incarnational. I'm reading this book (not for fun) called "Emotions in Ancient and Medieval Philosophy" that examines the train-ability of our affective states toward the end of some kind of greater (read as "divine" as we move into the medieval period) and maybe treats the distinction a bit more kindly. Though not nearly as much fun.
