What's a retread bit a guy who has head coaching experience?

Obviously if we're talking JVG or George Karl or someone along those lines, yeah, we should avoid those guys.

At this point I'm hoping for two things?

-Luke

-PHIL AND HIS TREE TO STAY FAR AWAY.
107178, Yes he was.

I don't see it yet. He's been an assistant coach for too little time and did a great job with a team that turned out to be the best regular season team ever - so I don't have an accurate depiction of him as a coach. Loved him as a player, especially as a rookie. He's composed, and he's a great locker room guy - and id like to roll the dice on someone young and new rather than JVG, Mark Jackson, Dunleavy, Monty, etc.

If his job was to tank and he intentionally coached in a way to make sure they tanked, then he’s an awful coach for shitting on them in the process. If tanking was the assignment then there’s no need to remind them that were so awful defensively.

This also means there was no good reason for him to take so many jabs at them through the media, because they were essentially serving a different purpose.

That also assumes that this team, as constructed, under these circumstances, was capable of winning significantly more games if he was coaching his ass off… which, if true, makes this much worse. He could have done his job and tanked the team without throwing them under the bus in the process but he did.

Byron actually looks much worse with your defense.
107197, That didn't make a grain sense. Edit before the hour is up.

107206, In what way did benching him make him better?
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Apr-25-16 12:26 PM
Further, in what way did benching him make him better that could not have been accomplished without benching him?

You said he “developed” him into a double double player.

He did that before he got benched. In fact, he was in the midst of a stretch of five games where he was coming on very strong when he got benched.

He still got tunnel vision when he got the ball at the end of the season. He passed a little more. He was already a solid playmaker *when* he passed.

What was significantly better at the end of the season from what he was doing when he got benched?

Did his defense improve?

Doesn’t seem like it.

Further, doesn’t Byron shoulder a significant portion of the burden of the defensive deficiencies of everyone on this team? Wasn’t that part of his job? So while he’s letting everyone know how bad they are defensively in their exit interviews, how much responsibility do you think he gives himself for that?

Or was Byron just a really good teacher with really poor students?
107207, Damn, you backtracking and frustrated. Lulz

If tanking was the goal, there was no need to trash them for it- especially in public.

If he was actually trying to win and they were as awful as he was saying, he shoulders some of the blame for their defensive woes.

Either way, Byron didn’t do anything remarkable in the face of those circumstances.

Further, you conveniently ignored yet another very simple question:
In what ways did they improve that were specifically due to being benched?

Instead of offering a thoughtful response, you performed your OE “act”.

You’re not even a person. You’re a personality. I’ve been calm, cool, and collected for the duration of this discussion. You’ve been the usual caricature. There’s no “meltdown”, no matter how hard you’ve tried to steer it that direction.

we have to see what's going to happen with the front office...

is Jim staying in place..... Mitch?

is Phil coming?

that has to be determined (if it hasn't already) before a coach is hired...

also...them ping pong balls would determine if we're going to stay really young....or if the balls don't fall our way....Free agency is more important..... and even if we do get a top 3 pick...we could move the pick to try and get a player like Cousins...

lot of other things have to fall in place .....

but I think moving on from B now was the right move...

obviously we'd give Luke a look..... Marc Jackson would be someone else I'd like to see us check out...... oh..and Kevin Ollie and Monte Williams..
107218, This was essentially a coin flip.

Posted by magilla vanilla, Mon Apr-25-16 12:02 PM
There were two ways to handle that specific coaching search: 1) be up front and say "look, we're not expecting much, but consider this season an audition for next year, when we expect to be reloaded and dangerous. If you can make sure these players see quality minutes and make solid progressions, we'll bring you back."

2) Do what the Lake Show did, which is take a candidate who was part of their most successful era, and insist that he only come on board if he takes performance actuators that the team has no hope of hitting, thus playing off of a) said coach's ties to the organization and b) his pride. This might have been Byron's last shot, and he couldn't be certain that the Lakers job was ever going to come around again.

Yes, he and/or his agent should have tried to parlay the situation into something more closely approaching 1 (maybe even had the performance incentives tie to the development of key rookies), but we aren't privy to what the negotiations were like. So yes, it was Byron's decision, but fuck the Lakers if they insisted on the performance option.
107239, Yeah, the tanking denial is so absurd

Let's run down his accomplishments this year:

Helped sell season tickets as Laker legend coaching GOAT's last year.

Developed the young players as much as possible on the GOAT farewell tour.

Hopefully helps the team keep its draft pick with doing his best coaching job of a depleted roster.

Possibly got Jim Buss out the paint after the season making some Lakers fans happy?

Deflected the ever loving shit out of the bullets that came in the form of criticisms towards the younger players minus Russell's snapchat dirty macking.

Finally, leaves the Lakers is a great position moving forward.

107251, I get the pt about double standards. But that's the wrong paradigm.
Posted by theeraser, Mon Apr-25-16 06:59 PM
To me the "so-and-so did a good enough job last year to deserve to coach the team next year" logic is really backward thinking. In fact the people you hear using that logic are the other members of the coaching fraternity, who always close ranks and protect their own, and don't have the best interests of any particular team at heart (apart from the one they happen to be coaching, if employed at that moment). But management's proper obligation is indeed to doing what's in the best interests of their team. Even if the coach did a great job last year, if there's a guy available and gettable whom management has reason to believe would do a better job next year, they should go out and get him.

For example, how long did Scott Brooks "deserve" to keep coaching OKC? The team went from expectedly awful in his first year (22 wins!) to 50 wins (playoffs), to 55 wins (WCF), and then to the Finals (beating a supposedly invincible Spurs team along the way). And Westbrook, Durant, and Harden sure developed under him, if we're using that metric! Yet IMO Brooks should've been fired immediately after those 2012 Finals for failing to bench Kendrick Perkins, because to me Brooks more or less threw that series by refusing to make a blindingly obvious adjustment. He clearly wasn't the coach to take them to the next level.

You should absolutely slam the Sixers and all these organizations who give white coaches more time even after they've demonstrated they don't have what it takes. And you can criticize LA for firing Byron, if you don't believe they can get a coach who'll do better going forward than Byron would have. But this "earned it" shit is just the wrong paradigm.

Posted by vee-lover, Mon Apr-25-16 11:39 AM
they had expectations on making the playoffs...at least as a 7th or 8th seed which is perhaps why Scott's contract did contain win incentives

I saw Kareem give an interview before the start of the season and even he said the Lakers were going to surprise everyone on how much they had improved from last season and that they would be a playoff team

What happened was no one expected Kobe to be as bad as he was (not even Bean) and once it became apparent he was done pretty much a few gms into the season Scott *WILLINGLY* went along for the ride and gave Bean carte blanche to ignore the team's needs and made the entire season ALL abt Kobe

No, Byron Scott does not deserve to continue coaching this team because that was NEVER the intent in the 1st place - he was ALWAYS a stop gap - the way in which he *publicly* ridiculed the young players in the media is enough to give him the boot...I'm almost certain none of the returning (young) players want him back. He's always had a reputation for wearing his welcome out particularly w/star players (J Kidd/CP3)

107262, Most people had them as a bottom 3 team in the West
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Apr-25-16 09:48 PM
If not the worst team in the West.

I'm sure they hoped that Kobe would be Kobe, Hibbert would wake up, Randle and Russell would be stars, but realistically, most people had them as a long shot of breaking out of the bottom 8 in the league, nevermind making the top 8 in the West.

107263, Pretty Much

107265, What are the expectations for next season?
Posted by Lach, Mon Apr-25-16 02:13 PM
I'm just wondering who wants to take the job with the team as constructed. Hire someone after the lottery? I'm curious what will happen if they don't secure a top 3 pick.
107266, Ettore Messina is a perfect fit for the Lakers.
Posted by Kira, Mon Apr-25-16 04:08 PM
He has the experience with an extensive championship pedigree. Think of a far, far, far, far, far, far, better David Blatt with much more experience and less ego.

Luke *could work as well. The emphasis on could refers to the fact that he coached an elite team to a 39-4 record in Kerr's abscence.

I vote for Ettore as a Lakers fan since GOAT's first preseason game as a Laker.
107267, the expectation is don't suck more than this year.

Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Mon Apr-25-16 06:11 PM
107269, That’s based on the 3 year window for Jim + Jeanie’s definition
Posted by Cold Truth, Mon Apr-25-16 06:50 PM
This is the third year and Jeanie has said that WCF is her measure of success.

So that expectation is based on Jim not getting the ax, not any realistic expectation of what we can put together this offseason.

That said, no expectation cannot be set until the lottery. We land a top two pick and our offseason landscape changes dramatically.
107270, I mean, that's a weird question.
Posted by Ryan M, Mon Apr-25-16 07:02 PM
We don't know who the coach is.

We don't know the FA situation.

We don't know whether or not we're getting a pick.

Expectations are hard to set right now.

I suppose we'll start with not throwing players under the bus in the media?
107271, Yep. It could be veteran stars or another year w/youth
Posted by SoulHonky, Mon Apr-25-16 09:44 PM
I'd say the former is more likely than the latter but Kobe leaving opens up a shitload of cap space and they have young guys to deal as well.

I think the key is keeping the pick and moving it for a veteran who will help them lure other vets. If they can't find a deal, it could be tough to get guys to sign.
107272, It's all about that pick. If we get 1 or 2, it's a great job.

Luke with Ettore Messina as the assistant HC to run the offense, mirroring the W's hiring of Kerr with Gentry to run the offense.

107277, I mean why Luke over Messina?
Posted by Ryan M, Mon Apr-25-16 10:06 PM
Honest question. Luke hasn't even had 10% of Messinas experience.
107278, Because of his Laker history and ability to grow with the team
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Apr-26-16 01:07 PM
I think they are looking for a HC who will grow with and develop with the players, like Brad Stevens in Boston. Luke's Laker history also makes him a firm fit in terms of the organization.
107279, I think Luke's GS experience is being downplayed too much.
Posted by Cold Truth, Tue Apr-26-16 01:54 PM
He’s got a nice lil resume. Nothing off the charts until his HC stint this past year, but with UOM and the D-Fenders he’s got a recent track record dealing with young, developing players.

I think the GS experience is being downplayed in a big way. I think there are enough similarities in the construction of our key pieces going forward that he can apply some of that mojo to this team. I’m under no delusions that Randle and JC will turn into Draymond or Klay defensively but Steph is an interesting blueprint for Dlo to follow and adding another GS guy like Harrison Barnes in the offseason (not unlikely, though I’m not crazy about the likely cost of acquisition) could help us tremendously over the next few years.

I think your Luke/Messina combo idea is perfect for this team personally. Two guys from two organizations who represent the class of the modern pro basketball game would be the best we could realistically hope for. Both guys would presumably bring a culture and current credibility that nobody else on that list really has. To honest I’m not crazy about anyone on the list after Luke, Messina, and Ollie. I get a knot in my stomach every time I encounter Jeff Van Gundy’s name in relation to the Lakers.

Frankly I think Luke would be warmly welcomed by most LA fans.
107280, Fair but the grey area to me is this:
Posted by LA2Philly, Tue Apr-26-16 03:51 PM
We know what Luke has been exposed to in GS but the question becomes does exposure to something (in this case building a certain culture and team attitude, and in the W's case, much of that culture and effort change was already implemented by Marc Jackson which Kerr built on) correlate with actually being able to foster it yourself?

I personally believe Luke has the wherewithal and understanding of organization/psychosocial factors that go beyond just the game to implement that type of culture change. As you said with Messina, he further lends a hand in that organizational change and brings with him some serious tactical X's and O's ability to complement Luke's player management and development. That brain trust would be absolutely incredible imo
107281, That’s why I like your tandem idea better than just Luke
Posted by Cold Truth, Tue Apr-26-16 05:01 PM
Honestly, I think Luke’s Warriors experience is just the tip of the iceberg. The overall combination of his personality + his tenure as a Lakers player + his time at UOM and the D-Fenders in addition to his time with the Warriors works to his advantage for this particular gig.

I think those specific experiences give him a grasp on aspects of managing strong personalities that Messina may not. Plus so much of Luke’s coaching career has been spent with younger players as opposed to the veterans on The Spurs, who have had relatively few bumps in the road and have been the model of stability on all fronts for so long on a team filled with veteran leadership that I wonder how Messina would handle some of the quirkier aspects of this youthful group.

He’s definitely more of an unknown quantity than Messina but given the fact that, IMO, the best candidates for this gig are all relatively unproven on this level I think he stands out from the mix of himself, Ollie, and Messina for this job in this city with this group of youngsters. I’d love to be a fly on the wall of their interviews to get a better grasp on what they’d like to do with this roster, who they think they can recruit in FA, and what their 3 year goals are.

It’s awfully hard to see Luke or Messina coming here to take an assistants job to sit under the other guy, but there may be something enticing if they both got a significant pay raise to take their respective strengths and build the next chapter of Lakers legacy from scratch in tandem.

That said I’m good if it’s either of those two or Kevin Ollie. It would be infuriating to see them pass on Byron just to bring in a codger like JVG or recent cuckold like Blatt. If that’s the route they wind up taking then they should have just given Byron another shot.
107282, They just got permission to talk to Messina
Posted by ShawndmeSlanted, Mon Apr-25-16 08:14 PM
i doubt its for an Asst job
107283, It's obviously not for an assistant job
Posted by LA2Philly, Mon Apr-25-16 08:44 PM
But that doesn't preclude us from offering him the assistant HC position, raising his annual salary, and giving him control of the offense.
107284, So Luke's hair is the most important qualification?

One, because this organization is a mess and a veteran coach would be able to manage the front office and a young team more effectively than a younger coach.

And two, Luke isn't ready, at least not yet. His run with the Warriors is very impressive, but hiring him would be the equivalent of the Seahawks signing Matt Flynn based on one good game with a different set of circumstances from most games.

I don't think that he didn't coach the team, but he probably had a lot of input and those games weren't close. That fact is important because he didn't have to make key in-game adjustments that he would have to make regularly with this team.

He also hasn't had to build a team from the ground up like he would have to in LA. As far as I know he wasn't a holdover from Jackson's staff and he likely mossed out on watching the team develop over time.

The coaches that might make the most sense would be Blatt and Monty Williams. Blast hasn't built a team, but he was chosen by the Cavs to develop that team sans LeBron and Love and while he wasn't a good fit with a superstar, he would be able to give a team a solid offensive offense approach. He might also be able to deal better with the press since he's from Europe and LA is a more cosmopolitan city than Cleveland.

Monty has overachieved every year and seemed to do well developing AD. He's not an LA vet and doesn't have the experience coaching in such a high pressure place, but he seems to be well liked and respected and also is young enough to relate to his players and be experienced and decent enough of a person to earn their respect.

Mark Jackson and van Gundy would be interesting as well. I think Jackson got a bad rep because he poorly managed his situation with the front office in Oakland. Maybe he's leaned to tone down his persona and work better with his management team.

Tough to judge the coaching job he did and how it'll translate to the Lakers. A veteran team that had been together vs. a potentially young team or a team that is just getting together (if the Lakers trade the kids for vets.)

The assistant coach hires as going to be VERY important. Interesting to see where they go.

Anyhow Luke is right man for this job and we currently have an excellent set of circumstances and you're mad about it.

Have fun overstating every downside and ignoring every upside. We'll continue view this hire with perspective and nuance. We're well aware that a young and unproven head coach comes a with some potential drawbacks, that it's a gamble, and that there are other chips that need to call right (i.e, Luke's staff will be critical, the threat of Feel returning) but since you guys are quite CLEARLY uninterested in any actual nuanced perspective in this situation for your collective agenda clown show, I'm just gonna sit back and laugh while we rebuild.

brilliant observation #1..so you can see why I'd want a coach who has experience grooming young point guards. Lol, I'm not buying one ounce of bullshit if anyone tries telling me he was integral to Curry's development.

what circumstances? as of now in the year of your lord April 30th, 2016

1. you dont have a number 1 pick (edit, in already weak draft class)

2. no real interest from any free agents (i doubt any of hte big fish this offseason will want to play for some n00b, if you land one, ill take the L)

it was this kind of presumed Laker arrogance that made lamarcus aldridge say yeaaaa no thanks btw

3. a coach with no proven track record as a head coach of a young developing team.

>what circumstances? as of now in the year of your lord April
>30th, 2016

You don’t know the Lakers current set of circumstances?

Let’s start with four very good young players with generally unknown ceilings with a high enough floor that there’s genuine reason for excitement for them going forward.

Then add, what, sixty mil in cap room?

Then add the potential for a top three pick.

It’s funny that all the Lakers haters/non-fans see is our record, the kobe retirement circus, and the name Jim Buss

>1. you dont have a number 1 pick (edit, in already weak draft
>class)

*yet*

We may or may not get that pick, but again, we’re in as good a position as anyone to get one of the two picks that matter. Also, if it’s such a weak draft, it makes little difference if we don’t land that top three pick if whatever was left was weak anyways. So that’s a wash.

>2. no real interest from any free agents (i doubt any of hte
>big fish this offseason will want to play for some n00b, if
>you land one, ill take the L)

Maybe. Maybe not. It’s a tough sell, but, you assume all Lakers fans prefer a big fish FA scenario or that this is the best scenario for the team. If we get Durant? Sure. That changes things. Getting that top two pick also changes everything.

-get the pick, draft Ingram or Simmons and let them develop with the rest. If we strike out on all the big names, so be it. Throw bigger money at quality veterans for short term deals to help this team develop.

OR

Trade the pick. Say, Chicago for Jimmy Butler. I’m guessing Simmons and Ingram will both draw interest from various teams. If we land a cat like JB on draft night free agency looks a lot different.

Oh, I know, there’s no guarantee we get the pick and even if we did there’s not guarantee he’d pan out and even if we wanted to trade the pick there’s no guarantee anyone offers anything good and if….

Yeah. I know. We all know. We all understand this. We all get it.
We’re in a better position than a rebuilding team could reasonably hope for at this stage.

>it was this kind of presumed Laker arrogance that made
>lamarcus aldridge say yeaaaa no thanks btw

What presumptions on my part? What arrogance on my part? What you talking about?

You’re conflating “good positioning going forward” with “everything is guaranteed to work out exactly the way we need it to”.

If NOTHING ELSE GOES RIGHT, we still have Randle. We still have Russell. We still have Nance. Those are some nice pieces to start the rebuilding process.

>3. a coach with no proven track record as a head coach of a
>young developing team.

Yeah. No shit. We know. None of the older coaches are very attractive. PLEASE tell me who all these established veterans that were can’t miss prospects and didn’t bring in some baggage with them.

We got a young guy on his way up from a winning program with ties to this team and community who can grow with the players on this team.

PLEASE, show me everyone acting like Luke isn’t going to make mistakes.
PLEASE, show me everyone acting like Luke has some sparkling track record as a head coach.
PLEASE, show me the sparkling track record of all the experienced head coaches we hired these last several years.

Fun fact: the only way to get real head coaching experience is to….. Become a real head coach.
Another fun fact: EVERY HEAD COACH WAS ONCE A FIRST TIME HEAD COACH.

>oh yea, I forgot about the vast experience he has putting
>together good coaching staff. my bad.

…because that’s what was said.

lol

I mean, you’re disingenuous at every turn. Every single statement you’ve made is intellectually dishonest and hinges on assumptions that AREN’T BEING MADE BY LAKERS FANS IN THIS POST.

>your optimism is endearing.

Your pessimism is completely dishonest and contextually ignorant.
My “optimism” is rooted in a lot of positive factors currently in play.

Again, you’re conflating hopeful optimism with presumptive arrogance and the two couldn’t be further apart. Your perception of my position is hilariously inaccurate because you insist on a dishonest interpretation at every turn.

>and you still havent quantified
>what "doing well in two years" is.

>playoffs? highly doubtful as of now.
>
>more "asset stockpiling"?
>
>we all know how well that works out.
>
>good luck with this incestous Lannister ass hire.
>
>nothing more than that 'TISM

No, you’re right. We have NO good young players, NO chance at a very good draft pick, NO cap room and if we DID have ANY of that, ALL of it would amount to NOTHING anyways and we’re doomed to the dark ages for all eternity.

That about sums up your take here.

Oh, and I’m calling it now: We’ll make the playoffs in two years.
Now, tell me all the excuses you’ll make when the time comes 
107343, Kerr learned from Lute Olsen (among others, but primarily)
Posted by justin_scott, Sat Apr-30-16 03:09 PM
Luke, just like Kerr, went to Arizona and learned from Lute as well, which is partly why he was ALWAYS a really intelligent player, even if he wasn't the most talented. i knew it even as a Laker fan who hated Luke as a player. i knew he was more cerebral than 95% of the guys he was playing with. Luke isn't some dude who just knows the right people and is well liked enough. Bill isn't getting him these opportunities. Luke gets these opportunities because he can coach, and he's proven his intelligence for over a decade now. there were stories about how cerebral he was during practices and while running plays. Sam Cassell was a FAR better player, but that doesn't mean he is automatically a better coach. Learning from a guy like Lute Olsen, plus being naturally bright, and having Bill for a father, gave Luke an advantage. He's learned from Lute, Phil, Kerr (who also learned from Phil), and many others. a lot of players don't get the opportunity to learn from so many great minds. very few players get the opportunity to win as much as Luke has. but all of that combined, plus much more, has made him into a very good coach.
107344, not surprised about hiring Walton...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Sat Apr-30-16 06:42 AM
..I don't agree, but I get it.

he's young, the family ties, his impressive (albeit short) stint as the assistant coach of the defending world champion warriors. I get it.

the lakers are looking to shake things up a bit. Byron Scott is a solid coach with an impressive résumé, but his deliberate/patient approach to the game isn't really appreciated in today's NBA.

while Walton is certainly a student of the game, this is one helluva gamble. only time will tell.

Posted by Cold Truth, Sat Apr-30-16 10:54 AM
It's either old school guys who are out of touch with this generation or tend to want to much power or young upstarts like Luke or older assistants like Messina. A guy like Blatt likely has a stank on him after Bron cuckholded him.

IMO the three best guys for *this* team were unproven as an NBA head coach.

Luke's more than the guy who picks up Steve's dry cleaning and everyone saying that's case probably didn't follow that situation all that close.
107346, exactly, who was the clearly better option?
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Mon May-02-16 12:56 AM
they could have coaxed someone out of retirement like sloan or adelman or, less ancient, van gundy but no sure things there. this was about as clean of a hire as they could have made
107347, or they could've been patient with scott...
Posted by CyrenYoung, Mon May-02-16 04:23 PM
..i know that quite a few people were in a hurry to see the lakers back on top, but the road to the top isn't easy.

the org has been in complete disarray since phil jackson left and its no secret that their decision making in that regard has been questionable, to say the least.

like i said before, i understand the move from scott to walton. i think it was premature, but given the circumstances, i understand their haste.

Luke Walton seems like a great guy, but I'm not interested
in him.

I'm saying Byron, like most black people, wasn't given
a fair chance. He was asked to actively lose games
and give Kobe a farewell tour. ALL the young players
improved by season's end, and yet he didn't get a chance
to coach any of them in a non-tanking, non-Kobe year.

Related thing happened to Sam Mitchell in Minnesota.
Can anyone *really* argue that he'd be doing worse than
Thibs would be doing with that roster? And Lulz...Thibs
got FRONT OFFICE power....Lulz...how?

And to be honest fairness doesn't matter in these decisions. Management should do what's best for the TEAM, looking forward, not what's most "fair" to the coach based on his past performance. Nobody "deserves" anything. If one coach does a great job (not how I'd describe the job Byron did btw), but management has the opportunity to replace him with someone who'll do a better job going forward than the old coach would do, management SHOULD make a change.
107386, LMAO. The former is a fact. The latter is a silly opinion.

We don't know if Luke was "better for this team" because
Byron never had an opportunity.

The only Luke we saw was the one who coached the most
talented team in league history in Golden State, then
the defending champions.

Byron goes the the NBA Finals -- "well, of course he did,
the East was weak."

Luke coaches the best team ever to an undefeated record:
"Look how Luke handled all that talent!"

Byron coaches an openly tanking team coddling Kobe in
a farewell tour: "He's obviously not the guy to carry
these guys forward."

Luke inherits guys Byron developed, doesn't have to
play Kobe: "Man, look how much better he is than
Byron"

This team is .500 right now. The “proof” of whether or not Luke is better is certainly anecdotal but the fact that Luke has been a net positive force for this team isn’t remotely debatable…. And that’s where you’re failing in this.

>Byron goes the the NBA Finals -- "well, of course he did,
>the East was weak."
>Luke coaches the best team ever to an undefeated record:
>"Look how Luke handled all that talent!"

You’re looking at both factors far, far out of context.

D Lo was what… 4? 5 when Byron was winning conference titles?
Yeah, you’re overstating the significance that experience.

>Byron coaches an openly tanking team coddling Kobe in
>a farewell tour: "He's obviously not the guy to carry
>these guys forward."

Another gross oversimplification.
You can’t even have an honest discussion because you’re too focused on your misguided agendas.

>Luke inherits guys Byron developed, doesn't have to
>play Kobe: "Man, look how much better he is than
>Byron"

I don’t see anyone getting benched for making rookie mistakes, so yeah… that’s a plus.
Nobody is denying

>I mean, it's like the night Trump won. You people really
>aren't very bright, are you?

I have no idea what the fuck this is supposed to mean or has to do with anything regarding this team.

No, Steph Curry said something about Jackson because
the Warriors owner was talking dirty about Jackson
the FOLLOWING season for NO reason. That's just Steph
being a real G.

They didn't speak on it at the time he was fired.

But that's besides the point:

Some guys are players coaches. Luke and Mark Jackson are.

Some guys who win tons of games and championships aren't.

That has nothing to do with this issue, so this "who likes

I was highlighting the generational differences. Kids idolize the players older than them.

What's hilarious is you keep harping on kids that can't even drink yet as being "out of shape". That wasn't the point at all, you're missing the forest for the leaves. Byron's style worked 16 years ago, when a number of those players were raised idolizing the players of the 80s. It's not as effective on players who don't know a world without Facebook. That's not necessarily an indictment of Byron, but more a symptom of changing times.

As for hiring Luke, look at the circumstances:

- Highly respected up-and-coming coach coming off 24-0 and 39-4 stand-in coaching stints (received 3 COTY votes)
- Absolutely glowing praise from Warriors players, including from Klay (son of Mychal, long time Laker analyst/color commentator)
- Former fan favorite on the team, with deep ties to Mitch and the Buss family
- Despite Thibodeau showing interest in the job, Lakers never really entertained him (FO also a factor here though)
- Luke actually wanted to coach in LA

Unless his name was Gregg Popovich, there was no chance the Lakers were retaining the current coach if the opportunity to hire Luke was there. Besides the whole "son of HOF'er" thing, Luke has long been characterized as a high IQ player and the reality of him being a head coach in the league has long been expected.

What's my point to all this? Hiring Luke was never a slight to Byron. It's only a slight if you have an agenda and ignore all the context. Luke had the rare combination of pedigree, youth, experience and organizational ties that doesn't come along very often. Unless the Lakers somehow made a deep playoff run, they were going to hire Luke Walton regardless if Byron or Thibs or Brooks or (most) whoever was coaching.

107430, they are also playing a lot better under walton
Posted by ConcreteCharlie, Tue Nov-29-16 11:49 AM

There are at least 97 more steps before "kill yourself" should be your interpretation.

You know, like see a professional to help you kick your pathological lying.

Make the conscious choice to stop being an insufferable troll.

The fact that you run straight to "off yourself" says worlds about you but nothing about me, so yeah... if anyone here needs help it's you.

Not very nice.
107457, All jokes aside, you might want to get some help, man.

Seemed pretty clear to me that he was saying you need to fix your behavior...If offing yourself is in the forefront of your mind, you honestly might want to care for yourself better, or find a professional to talk to.

People want to be able to have civil discussions in good faith on the board. I honestly don't think anyone here wishes anyone else ill on a personal level. I certainly hope not.
107458, Oh, I've been threatened by nerds on OKP several times, bro.

Many of you are socially awkward dweebs, which is beautiful,
and I'm glad you have a space to come and feel welcome (I mean
it) but I have definitely been stalked and threatened many
times through the years.

Pathetic and sad.

Y'all don't really know what humor is, and so you get
upset and throw tantrums when someone says you got a
booger in your nose.

Basa used to talk about this -- we were raised around
grown black people who loved us, but would clown us to
pieces for hours on end, and you'd have to sit there and
take it. It's part of learning how to be a person.

Guys like me and him are rare around here, apparently. Hard
for us to adjust to.

I'm not letting up, tho.

Because some of y'all some stinky breath dweebs, and I'm
gonna tell you about it.

107460, LOL. Sam Mitchell and Byron Scott are two different black men.
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Nov-30-16 08:00 AM

They only share in common that they were fired prematurely.

Otherwise, be smart enough to be able to discuss them
independently.

Yes.

Let's not act like he wasn't projected to be a good player. You want Byron to get credit for dude basically doing what he was drafted to do?

>So D-Lo would havebeen fine without Byron's coaching?
>That was all D-Lo?

Absolutely.

Now tell us how mad you are and go back to your weird, out of place ad hominem bullshit.

Just didn't want it to get lost.
107466, Yes. IMO assessing ANYONE's firing involves assessing their replacement
Posted by theeraser, Wed Nov-30-16 03:57 PM
This is what I mean by "no one DESERVES anything" and "all decisions should be forward-looking". Even if one coach has done a good job, management's responsibility is not to that coach but to the franchise. If someone they believe would do a better job in future is available, they should make the move. So by definition I don't think "Byron earned the right to coach another year" is a good argument, even were you to judge his tenure more favorably than I do. The argument should be in the form of "Byron would have done a better job going forward than Luke".

Same thing applies to the way management treats players, by the way. Nobody "deserves" anything based on past performance.
107467, Byron was in the NBA Finals last time he was given a decent team
Posted by Orbit_Established, Wed Nov-30-16 04:01 PM

But of course, "The Eastern Conference was Weak!!!"

Lulz.

But Luke does well with the best team ever, and "many
that Luke Walton can coach!"

Double. Standard.

Why would we make an excuse in one situation and
give a guy the benefit of the doubt in the other?

107468, You keep saying that, forgetting he coached the Hornets.
Posted by Ryan M, Wed Nov-30-16 04:19 PM
That was the last decent team he coached.

They had runner up in the MVP race Chris Paul, won 56 games, had 2 all stars, and blew a 2-0 lead on the Spurs in the 2nd round. Then they were a 49 game winning 1st round knockout, then Byron got fired 9 games into the following season.

Probably didn't help that they lost by nearly 60 points at home in the playoffs the year before.

Anyway.

Just saying - he had talent on that team and that wasn't the Nets.
107469, Bwahaha. That makes my argument stronger, idiot
Posted by Orbit_Established, Thu Dec-01-16 07:24 AM
Those Hornets teams were completely outmatched in a
LOADED West. That they were outmatched is the exact reason
the Chris Paul legend grew. And Lol @ blowing a lead to the
Spurs. It's the fucking Spurs. Of course they lost to the Spurs.

Dude has overachieved without LOADED teams. Give dude time
to cultivate and he wins games. He was not given that chance with
the Lakers
107470, It really doesn't. But that's ok. Luke is better for this team. Cry.

107471, What I find curious...
Posted by wallysmith, Thu Dec-01-16 10:08 AM
...is that 31 posts have passed since post #266, and 14 posts have passed since I called attention to post #266. Yet the person I replied to with post #266 still has yet to address the points listed in post #266.

Fact of the matter is, the argument for keeping Byron Scott falls flat on its face when someone has to argue why the Lakers SHOULDN'T hire Luke Walton. In other words, the change in coaches was more about hiring the millennial-friendly coach to coach a team of millennials.

In addition to that, Luke Walton actually had DEEPER ties with the current Laker FO due to his years with the most recent championship squads. It's notable that hiring Luke Walton was one of the very few things that Jim and Jeannie Buss agreed on despite their very public family feud.

Even DA GAWD noted that Thibodeau was spurned because Luke Walton was at the top of the coaching search:

As @WojVerticalNBA has reported, Tom Thibodeau absolutely would have given the Lakers a look. Timing is everything in life.

Maybe we should hear from Mychal Thompson, Lakers color analyst for well over a decade:

Trudell: What did Klay say about Luke?

Thompson: He made the right adjustments, used the right tone as far as speaking with his players and motivating his players. He made the right moves. They believed in him a lot, just as much as Steve Kerr. So the players, they endorsed him. They said, “This guy knows what he’s doing.” He’s a good coach and he’s young, he communicates with young guys, he understands young guys. He will bring a new system here a lot like what the Warriors employ up there.

I just think it’s a perfect fit. I get so sick and tired of people telling us, “With all that talent he’s supposed to win.” If you’re going to discount what Luke did as a coach, are you going to discount what John Wooden did? What Pat Riley did? Red Auerbach? Didn’t they have talent? You can’t win without talent.

So, to reiterate myself yet again, Luke Walton wasn't hired to get rid of Byron Scott, he was hired because he's Luke Walton. Outside of maybe Gregg Popovich, there's no way the Lakers were retaining their current coach, regardless of the color of his skin.
107472, ABSOLUTELY NOT.

..all the agenda/mad-making-bs in the world won't change the fact that the lakers made the right move in hiring luke walton.

byron scott did a solid job of introducing the business of professional sports to this young team, but its fairly obvious that they respond well to walton's approach to the game.

right today: walton trumps scott.

scott's reputation as a hard nosed, straight forward leader was well-earned as a player and coach. only time will tell if walton lives up to his potential and earns tenure long enough to surpass those accolades. as for now, the simple fact of the matter is that luke walton is the rare exception to the rule and its working.
