18555, hdub Invitational Week Eight: willi_dudat vs. blak_yukon
Posted by hdub, Fri Mar-31-06 04:01 PM
Greetings OKFreestylers, it's your boy 'dub back again to hit you with more homegrown hotness from these very boards. I know normally folks say that March comes "in like a lion and out like a lamb," but this past month in this tournament we came in like a lion and we're going out like one too.

I know I'm coming early with this one, but honestly I already got these two audios in my inbox and they were just too hot to hold on to. Of course voting on last week's battle still doesn't close until 8pm so if you have any last words on that one by all means hit it up. The revised rest of the schedule will be posted up once everythings decided in there. I'll even throw up the link to make it easy:

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=7&topic_id=54475&mesg_id=54475

^^^Last weeks battle was a bit of a roller coaster ride. We had a lot of ups and downs on that one, for a second there it even seemed like the Gods of Soundclick were deadset against us. I think this week's matchup is going to be extra ill though and we'll be back on track with these raps in no time. If you don't mind I'm going to break out of unbiased host mode and be real with you all for a second.

Honestly, when I first made up the brackets I thought this one was going to be a blowout of etherrific proportions. We all know blak is a beast, and if you didn't know that before this tournament you most definitely do now. But after listening to both links I can say that willi despite his rookie status is not going down without a fight. Whatever happens I got to say this to willi; I know you've made a big investment in time and equipment and it shows. You've been moving up fast, and now I'm thinking this battle might be a pretty close call. The reason I mention this is because this kind of growth is exactly what this tournament is all about and I'm stoked to see it. So wtih all that being said, let me shut my longwinded ass up! Without further ado here's blak versus du:

Overdue
My next project to most will be a debut
Every line devised to you
Comes across as overnight success
But nah, this a dime and few pennies of many
Setbacks yet that just kept flows intact
Few sugar sis damp cause of a nigga’s point of view
My raw subtle
Oh fa’sho will bubble indeed
My type of tai chi sedates souls, make foes reconsider
Ill advised maneuvers against the time tested
Rally your ears around he who finessed it
Braille mines, those stale rhymes fall flat in a abyss
Alchemist over what’s given
Power steer driven
Commandeered authentic long dick out for pennants
Staircase music for those with a jones for label
Absolut on the rocks for like an hour still stable
This for those who,who saw eviction steal cable
Still able to bang out shit
Opposite of frail fables and shit
One of many a mic mechanics overtime with rhyme
Killin’the stagnant
Homegrown minus the additives
At it again in all black
Like Annakin Sky
The black Hispanic V.I. still doin’it
Aight, play the whole thing back real quick…

First gesture is that of the crucifix
Lonewolf in wallabies fascinates yet aint said shit
Squad rolls one deep
Heineken owns the bloodstream
Observe flaws in I and yours that forge
Deferred dreams
Right here where Pac’s revered like the bible
In it gotta be one of the fittest in the game of survival
I’m what you get when you got skill, style and finesse
Couple with doubt
Voice drops out
Whenever the urge borne to shout
In this day and time
For likeminds trying to come by
On a staircase on building 3
For most a mystery
Flows part of history when I devise timeless quotes
Beyond guesses and made theories
And while some hazel eyes haunt me
Out of debt I climb
I find a line to scribble
It’ll blind a little, fuck it…
Type nigga who breaks his neck to say nothing to fit in
Hip square most circles could never fit in
After work to the top I rise
Tunes by Keni Burke
Network
Increase net worth
In a zone
To the letter it’s known fact
Vocals is graphics etched in rosetta stone
Let alone blak
Never gave chase for contracts, nah-uh..

song: Stardom

HOOK:(are you ready for the...)spotlights, limelight, cameras flashin,
screamin mobs, pleas and sobs, unendin' action;
heavy coat tails its a chain reaction,
obsession with stardom's the greatest distraction:

(interview #1)

I: so you think you can handle the pressure?
the spotlight hosts those with the most depression;
surrounded by snakes that's only out to do'em harm,
though they unarmed there is need for alarm:
financially lose an arm at the hands of a lawsuit,
for thinkin that a project was flawproof, but now they got you, playin your defense in a courtroom, with fans that's supposed to adore you, but once that gavel slams they ignore you,
and what you're goin thru, you knew that they would slam that door soon, rep done been torn to, shreds and all those who endorsed you,
done turned they backs as if they don't know you,
and man its so true,
the line between love and hate so thin,
and its the 'tightrope' that too many put hope in;
but be warned if you can't stand on your own,
when you fall off you fall alone... (...ready for the...)

HOOK & interview #2

II: i try to tell'em 'the bidnezz' aint for all,
the feeble at heart need not apply, application denied;
and you'll experience it a million times,
the only things that change are the days and the lines:
monday they say they'll call you, tuesday the slot's been filled,
wednesday they say you're good but don't seem too thrilled;
and if you on, don't think you can't be gone,
cause there's a million and one who's just (dyin to be a starrrr!!!)
so if the opportunity knocks
and you're rewarded with gratuity stocks,
but get dropped cause they assumed you'd be hot,
be confused you should not,
its all a game...we the pawns and they the 'kaings':
but rank is so hard to gain,
when there's so many puttin knives in ya back that you just used to the pain, when you complain you get written off its so bizzarre,
forget who you are! you should be (dyin to be a starrr!!!)

HOOK & interview #3

III: now to my recollection, wack is wack and dope is dope,
and yeah some niggas just ain't got no hope;
like a paraplegic man, they simlpy don't stand a chance,
but swiftly i advance, to quickly enhance:
my okpeeps to euphoric trances with the rhythm,
and trample the subsequent like extended logarithms;
while shinin' like a prism, forebodin' all the schisms,
exercisin' wisdom, askin the lord to forgive em:
they know not, yet blindly believe that they're so hot,
head gassed and won't be relieved til' it go POP;
and the general public exposure will overdose ya,
twist your head in knots, depress then comatose ya:
WAKE UP!!! and face facts before its too late black,
'fore ya heart becomes the neighorhoods daytime snack;
and nighttime fairy tales, stories they know very well,
failed attempts at grandeur, hood standard yet to be excelled:

HOOK & goodnight!!!

Will...sun...lol. The best I've heard from you. From concept to the track and cadence and all. Man...that's a SONG. And not an OKP audio. It's a definite difference.

Blak...man you just a monster. Period. I'm waitin to see you on VH1 Soul, playa.

This is difficult to call...indeed...I'll have to come back tonight and listen again. Cuz right now, I can't decide.

But I have to say thank you to you both, cuz in the end, this type of quality will push all of us to hone our craft. And some of yall need no honing at all, lol. So yeah, I'll listen again tonight. I'll be black...

For me, this came down to personal preference. Technically speaking, these were both excellent. Songs you could sell on the street. But out of the two, the first track to get get play in the ride would be Blak's. I would rock both, but if I'm rollin through downtown Baltimore in the summer, windows down...Blak would be the first CD I put in. Just for his raw delivery. But again Willi, your track is on point, I reeally liked it...I just favor Blak's delivery. Congrats on that Lesson Mixtape though. Word.

This ain't no fly weight /bantam weight / feather weight /light weight /welter weight / or middle weight battle -- (((THIS IS "HEAVY WEIGHT" SHIT))) -- :9

The lyrics to both joints was on ^point^ and skill~FULL! -- *No Doubt*

Blak -- U be kickkkin' it with that Houston steelo flava -- (Uniquely your own) -- w/a Southern finesse, yet Eastcoast swagger.
Readin' yo werdz makes ONE wonder "how" it sounds, but LISTENING to the flow explains your cadence and style -- Which as I said, is truly unique & polished.

Un~4~tunately, my computer kept buffering your ish -- (It don't like "Myspace" audios) -- :P -- So I had to listen to it about 3 times -- But I like your sound, so the buffering was just a minor irritant/inconvenience.

You done good boo -- Both w/the writtens & Audio -- *Daps* -- ;)

Willi my Nilli -- U da shyt boi!!! -- :)

The direction you took this AUDIO to was mos' def' clever & witty. (I expecially liked the hook, by the way) -- You rocked it -- From beginning to end -- (TOP 2 BOTTOM) -- In both written & AUDIO.

Your creativity & pretzel logic wrapped around my eardrums and put a big~ass *smile* on my face -- :)

Since we have until next Friday to make our decision, I'm gon' listen to both flows summm mo' and decide by mid~week.

THIS IS HARD Y'ALL -- (((Forreal Tho)))

Excellent jobs from both U guys -- *Photo shakes hands and asks for AUTOGRAPHS* -- :P

I B BACK ...

18564, Yo let me tell yall how this just made my day.

On the one hand you have a lyrical stylist in Blak Yukon who sounds like an extra from the bootcamp click circa '94 (that's a compliment).

On the other hand is Will_dudat who's complete song idea and execution is golden.

This is a tough one, but since this is more of a flow/delivery kind of battle, I have to give to Blak.

Willi_dudat, your cadence and song is on point (no BS,I think you're on to something), but I can't get over the audio quality. I think Blak comes across as just a little more comfortable with his flow too.

Great job to both!

...thanks for encouraging people to come out sha

i been holding back myself cause im hosting and cause i agree with the majority on this one

like i said, this is definitely a close call- willi what makes this so close for me is your beat- i dug that very much- like everybody else said the concept was also real tight- although for your intros it would be better if you could have a friend play other parts or throw more effects on your voice- as it was it was the same voice for the intro and
the raps- but thats a tiny thing just throwing it out there

your lyrics and flow were also tight but the beat was the standout part for me

blak- your beats were tight too- i liked the first half beat very much although the second half wasn't doing it as much for me

the lyrics were tight as usual and your flow was 10000% on point- i love how you got that unpredictable pattern to your steez<<< and at the end of the day its blak's flow that is the deciding factor for me-- it was close but i got to give it to yukon

I can't help but go -- With the YUKON "flow" ...

After listening -- and listening -- AND LISTENING -- Blak's joint kept callin' me with his cadence & smoooooove steelo -- :9

He just got "IT" like that, I guess -- *smiles*

I agree with Shakeet, it "is" a matter of personal preference -- Although BOTH were equally tight!

Wonderful job from both & Intense competition guyz! -- (((Forreal Tho)))

"look! i DON'T tell the beat what to do....the beat is like my brother...i gotta listen and relate to him" -- raekwon
18571, willi did that...and here's why
Posted by muddywaters, Thu Apr-06-06 12:50 PM
he had a song.
this cat thought of a concept and followed through completely.

the classic three verse format – each verse was focused on the topic at hand. how many times have you listened to a song where, if your fortunate enough to hear a solo artist spit three verses in his own song, the last two veer off topic, on a Redman steez(i love Redman but most times he all over the place), only to revisit it right before the hook

the hook – kid came up with the hook and it went with the song, but didn’t over-shadow it

that “interview” shit – hey look! a sketch/skit/interlude…whatever you wanna call it, that actually compliments the song/concept. this seriously reminded me of some classic ice cube “Alive On Arrival” shit

the beat – does his own… who better knows what track to run on than the athlete who also lays the astro-turf (or clay or grass, etc.) – point is…he tweaked the track to the concept. from the sound of the flash charging at the beginning to the “born to a star”, to the tempo that matches the tempo of the business, fast pace. most artists in interviews say they told so and so producer the idea and said producer gave them what they were looking for. i equate that to - i asked for a snickers and got a candy bar – willi wanted a milky way dark chocolate and made a milky way dark chocolate

the quality – you guys must be talking about sound quality because i see overall quality – as in willi took a concept and covered it from all angles – completely. as far as sound, it don’t sound no worst than a used tape

now, don’t get me wrong, i'm not taking anything thing away from blak – but there cats all over this board with clever word play, battle rhymes, punchlines and rah rah. but how many of them are a complete package.
18572, i have a confession...
Posted by willi_dudat, Thu Apr-06-06 01:29 PM
for a moment, i thought my efforts were in vain...

i almost said "fuck it then"... but enter muddywaters... noticed everything i done...

thats all it takes to keep me goin right there...

blak is fam, bout as good as an internet pal gets... i give him the lyrical edge for sure... dude can spit his ass off... in that arena i can barely compete... but to write off all that i put into my entry just seemed __insert term of injustice__...

i ain't tryin to discount anyones opinion, and i may very well be over-exposin myself... point fingers, call me names, or whatever...

im just lettin y'all know how im feelin...

carry on...
