i like the colours and the style of the letters but that bald head scares me!
except for live shows we always see him covering his head ll style.
i think it would be cooler if he was just one of the guys in the backround

if this is seriously the cover art for the new album, AND "I Got a Right Ta" is on the album, I think I'm actually going to have to think twice about buying it. I nevere thought a day would come when I would not buy an album from this man... but it seems this day may actually happen...

Posted by Kalibur, Sat Oct-26-02 01:47 AM
This cover is hot!!!! It's "Midnight Marauders" revisited. I can see this in the stores, and people looking at it like "whatdafuckizthis?" Double takes are good, and Common already has the people's ear ("The Light"). The cover is definitely better than Kweli's (even though I'm buying that too). Electric Circus is on some next shit, and I'm sucking it all up.
9652, RE: Yes, Common is back in business!!!!!!!
Posted by thelonious, Sat Oct-26-02 02:04 AM
on point. One of you guys said it before. It looks like midnight mauruders revisited + sgt. pepper on acid + some isaac hayes cover. hot buttered soul???
I love it. And I like I got a Right ta a lot: "hiphop is changin, you want me to stay the same", says it all.

I gets the funny feeling that the lads who made Sgt. Pepper might have actually dabbled in the psychadelic drugs themselves once or twice...
9654, Since when do we judge albums by their covers??????
Posted by PoeticPhaerie, Sat Oct-26-02 04:02 PM
I will buy that album regardless of what it looks like...surely that is a secondary issue when compared to content. I'll be the first to admit that it looks strange and his facial expression is a little disturbing, but look y'all it's his album - he can do what he wants. And yes, I agree it is very Midnight Marauders reminiscent. If we started judging music via album art just think how many rap albums would never sell. As for "I got a Right Ta" I think it grows on you with repeat play. It is jangling when you first hear it and feels out of step with the Common of old (The Mary J track is more like it...some "The Light Pt.2" type shit) The question here is whether "I got a Right Ta" is out of sync with the rest of the album? If not, then why drop it? The job of the artist is to challenge is audience - obviously some of you find this joint too challenging!

"Time alone, oh time will tell....dem think dem in heaven but dem livin' in hell" Bob Marley

"And even after all my logic and my theory I add a muthafucka so you ig'nant niggaz hear me." Lauryn Hill

I'm also not feelin this. I don't think I like the direction Comm and the Roots are going in. This is sad news.

BTW, I think "I Got A Right Ta" is just a B-side for one of the singles (maybe "Come Close To Me") not on the album (Thank the Lawd).

I mean If it's a fuckin DMX cd and it's got fuckin Puppies, Rainbows, and Unicorns that aint right

In someways it can show the Artist's creativity

Like the cover for things fall apart was cool(the riot thing was genuis), Train of Thought had a nice cover(it reminded me of when I actually got to live in a real city0

It doesnt make the music cook, but I mean for someoen that has never heard of the artist it can help that guy buy the album if teh cover is cool

9697, you cant judge an album by its cover
Posted by atruhead, Sat Oct-26-02 09:24 AM
but i will say this much, its seeming like he's taking calculated efforts to become different as of late. as if being b-boy/conscious/sensitive lover/hard mc just got too boring for him. its no secret that image matters a lot when you're in the spotlight, and people go through changes hopefully which doesnt affect the quality of his art. we've been told the sound will be different, now the question is will it be good or bad?

common has his core audience of bohemian coffee house women who will love anything he puts out no matter what because he represents their "king". the ones who cant name anything other than retrospect for life, the light and maybe the ghetto heaven remix. i've purchased his stuff not because Im supposed to but because I liked a majority of the music. lets hope he isnt just left with the abstract crew holding him down after this effort

9698, Man, there is absolutely nothing wrong w/ that cover.
Posted by HoChiGrimm, Sat Oct-26-02 10:52 AM
Nothing. It just goes to show that
you can't please everyone nor do I
think Common gives an eff about
trying.

Anyone who possesses a modicum of knowledge
about music and it's history knows how
significant good album cover art is, e.g.,
refer to Miles Davis or The Roots, etc.
The aesthetic quality of the album cover can-
not be understated.

If you cats were expecting Common to
rock a pair of Gazelles and pose in a
B-Boy stance, in the foreground of a
graffiti covered brick wall on this cover,
forget it and get over it. The days of
Resurrection are over with and there is
little room for nostalgia when you are
in a process of continual artistic and
spiritual development.

I keep reading that some cats are not gonna
purchase Common's latest work because he
doesn't file his fingernails properly or his
beard is too thick. Well, bye-bye, see ya!
Don't let the door hit ya in the ass! Go listen
to Jurassic 5 or something. As for the rest of us,
we are exited about Cornbread pushing the envelope
and we have no time to reminisce.

youngin...your hears are bleeding since you always bumbed that shit by my nigga common...it's better to stay a way from that joint, cause the synthy horns are secret weapons from saddam to kill all young brave men and women...

nah.. i just don't like that beat... it sounds like...like... some dumbed down european techno, new wave Berlin punk/pop shit... i already got enough of this kinda ish around my "hood"

9726, great Concept

but the color pallete is all wrong and the execution is all wrong

its kind of disapointing to see artist i like have to suffer through this stuff cause i allways assume you guys have top notch people doing your art direction and concepts if not I would be putting in bids to do it myself

anywa that doesnt mean the album isnt gonna be dope

The idea is good (although far from original), but it looks like it was put together by a colour blind 5 year old with 1 arm ...

Wrong colours and the pics look like they've been cut out with a pair of rusty scissors and simply pasted on top of each other.

Imagine how terrible this'll look in it's full vinyl album sleeve glory ...

If this was inspired by Midnight Marauders it's NOT a tribute, but more a diss.

Now I don't judge an album by its cover, so it won't affect how much I like it or not, but I always figured that artists try to have their sleeve reflecting the vibe of the album ... which makes me wonder ...

But I get the impression some artists in the Soulquarian camp are trying to be different just for the sake of being different. Instead of focusing on just doing their thing and not worrying so much what people will think.

Yea, I'm feeling the overall idea that was used here. It definitely is cohesive with the title of the album, and possibly with the music(i havent heard enough to make that assumption)
My first reaction was ughhhh but as i look at it, it's growing on me. Now i say just take that cover and give it some sort of hands on effect as if its been sitting in the back of a goodwill for 3 years.
I would say that my main beef is just that picture of common with his "i just pooped my pants" face.
Who designed this thing anyways?

That joint looks like some ole' 70's soul record!!!!

Most of you young ignorant fucks don't know shit about that....that's why your not feeling it. Because most of you haven't taken time to get into music beyond the 80's.....shit probably the 90's. Most of your first "Hip-Hop" albums was Dr. Dre's the Chronic.

Sorry to just wild-out like that, but people on here just piss me off sometimes. Even if you know music, and see what he was tryin to do with the cover art.....regardless if you like it or not.....your going to atleast appreciate his attempt.

And for some of us a backpack is where we keep our gat, not our thesaurus. Really, please head down to Project Blowed on a Thursday night in LA and call Self Jupiter or Ellay Khule a backpacker. I saw a quote on Curserver.com the other day where some guy was saying that he watched Khule beat down a promoter with a beer bottle only to go on and perform like 5 minutes later.
