Big up to Dj Twilite Tone who deejayed during the set changes. I was standing right behind him all night while he was doing his thing. Dude is gangsta!!!!!! That has to be the best concert of '03. Top it off with DJ Premier on the radio this morning doing a mix!!!!!!! Eff it!!!

i took my 8 yr old twin daughters to the show last night... they are HUGE talib fans and they LOVED his set! They were soooo hype for kweli, little arms pumpin' in the air... but unfortunately, due to their being 8 and up way past bed time, the slept thru common. BUT I DIDN'T!!! Show was great... those were the two sets i was dyin to see and i got to share it with my seeds and it was LIVE! so i'm peace today...
(just thought i'd share my beautiful experience)
what's one of the most beautiful sights in the universe? a sea of arms rockin in a crowded space in unison... aaahhhh...

Black Leather coat, Black Jeans, Camel Brown Kenny Cole shoes.

9096, My thoughts for the evening! Posted by oledirtysmurf, Fri Mar-07-03 07:37 AM
Talib stole the show! Gangstarr wmatched his energy for the first half of his preformance but lost momentum after the nilitia came out. I was very dissappointed about Floetry. The rocked Erykah's show but just weren't with it last night. The first half of Gangstarr was bananas! Talib once again stole the show. I was in front row but every once in a while I would turn around and see peeps on the upper level all the way in the back still going crazy. Common put on a very good show, although you could tell his focus was to do more then get everyone hyped. Also, the DJ's showed mad love last night. Time flew by inbetween sets! Overall, I think it was better then the roots show. I just wished more peeps would have seen the sign. I didn't hold it up as much as last time cause it was much more crowded! And I'm spent

GANG STARR had me climaxing all night I waited years for that
Common was nice he shouted out my street HEE HEE
Question was i the only one FEELIN FLOETRY!!!

9101, RE: I guess Common Loves Detroit....................... Posted by Big Zo, Fri Mar-07-03 10:13 AM
floetry was decent....i love their album, but wasn't feelin the energy from them....
gangstarr, which was who i truly went to see came out and ripped....i enjoyed that, classic material
talib impressed me w/how he held the crowd.....he definitely did his thing...and what about invincible comin out to rip on his set??!?....liked that..
common and a black girl named becky killed it.....i enjoyed his set more this time around compared to the show he did at st. andrews in december......kat gives a great live performance....
overall, it was one of the best shows i've ever been to.......thoroughly enjoyed myself....though young kats need to watch what they drink/smoke/take....this was an 'all ages' group and i saw more folks passin out and staggering then i've ever seen at a show....one kat had his eyes rollin in the back of his head.....but like i said, i had a good time!...lol

I guess Detroit is supposed to be "re-writing" hip hop history", says MC SERCH
This could be big.
I kinda got mad at some dudes behind me when he was saying that cause they were saying "get off the stage" I'm like your talkin to the man that discovered NAS (HELLO!!!)

9110, RE: and another thing......................... Posted by olujosh, Fri Mar-07-03 12:57 PM
I drove from Lansing, MI to see the show and it was WELL worth the price of admission and THEN SOME...
CRAZY SHOW! Quite possibly one of my all-time fav's...I started out in the front, but somehow ended up 3 or 4 "rows" of people back...(due in large part to a woman nearly 3 times my size squeezing her way in front of me...doncha hate that?)...
One of my few OVERALL MINOR criticisms (1) maybe it was my "section" but I always feel like I get stuck in the part of the crowd that just isn't INTO it as much as I am...could just be me... (2) I was expecting more collabos...maybe Floetry rockin' with Common for "The Light" or "Love Of My Life" ...although T3 and Kweli joining Common on stage was enough to take care of me tho'....
Floetry - pretty good. I really like what they do, and having bought the album a few weeks prior, I think they have a LOT of potential. I think what hurt them was that it seemed like 70 percent of the crowd seemed to be hearing them for the first time, so that always hurts the atmosphere.
Gang Starr - excellent! I think the "name that tune" section that Primo did dragged on a bit...but the show was pretty hot overall. The dude from the Training Day soundtrack was a nice addition...Guru and co. tackled all the big songs, a nice mix. Lookin' forward to their new joint - I think I heard MAY 2003 as a release.
Kweli - what can I say? He's Talib Kweli. He ripped it. (MC SERCH declared him "The best M.F. shit I have ever seen") And I'm one of the many who doesn't know "Invincible"--she was damn good! I'm from Lansing, so I guess word hasn't spread outta Detroit yet
Common - I saw his show in Chicago not too long ago at the House Of Blues, this one was pretty much the same, but having T3 and Kweli come out to rock with him was an added bonus...the DJ part of the show was JAW-DROPPING, Common knows how to rock a live show...
The show ran (including in between shows) from 7:30 until about 12:15, I could tell the "out of shape" portion of the crowd seemed to die down late in the Common show (or some of us who are a bit out of shape, but we're so caught up with the hot show that we were able to ignore our sore legs)

9113, you know ?uest................... Posted by Yank, Fri Mar-07-03 02:01 PM
I could remember back in the 80's and even most of the 90's
Nobody was feelin the "D". I mean you could go anywhere and say you from Detroit and get mad respect but as far as hip hop went we got no love here. Now it's 2003 and my how times have changed in Detroit. Between Dilla, Slum D-12 Enminem, Royce Da 5'9 and even my dog Phat Kat. Detroit is trying to come up. You know MC SERCH kinda scared me last night and said that we were going to re-write Hip Hop history. I wonder what he meant by that?
But it's weird that Detroit is really in the rap game and the hip hop culture right now, and I'm glad I aint too old yet to enjoy. This is something that I wished for my city for a long time dog. And I'm glad that artists like you and the rest of OKP are embracing us.
So when ya comin back to do another show (I tried to ask you that on MSN)
|
9114, It was only a matter of time Posted by MotownGirl, Sat Mar-08-03 05:54 AM
Before the D jumped off. We got a lot of potential and a idea setting/crowd. If we get that Justin's and one or two more things ( ie.. House of Blues, ESPNZone) it's ova for. This Summer should be very interesting too with all the hype we've gotten this past year, I'll be on the front line, can't wait.

9119, RE: I guess Common Loves Detroit....................... Posted by oledirtysmurf, Fri Mar-07-03 01:07 PM
The only reason that I sort of dogged Floetry in my review is that I was blessed to see them open for Erykah Badu a couple of weeks ago. Their preformance was beyond words. Last night the music spoke for itself (I still feel that floetic was one of the hottest albums last year)but they just didn't have that extra little sumptin sumptin last night.

com hit us with everything new and old, dope light show, breaking, t3 and kweli, almost dilla? that "thelonius" is the hottest shit he ever wrote, kinda dissapointing he didnt come out and spit it . that show was hip hop. only dissapointment: after stumbling out of the town pump tavern at around two i discovered some chump busted my window in and jacked my cd's from my truck at Cass and Montcalm. Welcome to the D.

If anyone caught the Common show in Dec...he basically said the same stuff.
But its all good. I'm sure he has picked up many chicks from downtown to 7 mile....pre Erykah, of course :)

9123, RE: I guess Common Loves Detroit....................... Posted by MrsBrendaJae, Fri Mar-07-03 05:24 PM
as if there was anymore reassurance as to how nice the show was... one of my 8yr olds that was at the show with me, this evening she was runnin around the house with a makeshift do-rag and one of my baseball caps sayin she was talib kweli spittin her versions of various hooks...
there was one disappointment... my daughters' favorite kweli song is guerilla monsoon rap, so they were disappointed they didn't get to hear it. "mommy, why didn't talib do all his songs?" i had to explain how Monche and black thought weren't there to do it with him...
|
9124, RE: I guess Common Loves Detroit....................... Posted by Big Zo, Sat Mar-08-03 09:04 AM
it was pretty much the same show...but this time he did more...i.e. 'aquarius', '1-9-9-9', and the encore joints at the very end.....i was feelin that....i'm glad he let his dj go off this time around too.....he KILT it!....lol
|
9125, i mean....... damn Posted by carterboy, Fri Mar-07-03 06:58 PM
That show was so f_ckin' live. I was feelin' that all day. That's all I talked about all day. I went mostly to see common and kweli. I missed most of floetry. But Gangstarr rocked that sh!t. They dragged on a little, i must agree, wit' the 'name that song bit'. But when kweli came out, i mean aside from being my favorite emcee, without a doubt, he rocked that show. An' then common came, an' he brought back kweli, sh!t the only thing that would've made it better was if Mos had showed up to do some blackstar.
Common did kinda trick us when he mentioned kweli, and he came back out, but then he mentioned mos but he didn't show. Other than that it was all peace. I'm still vibin' off that show.

He name checked a bunch of Minneapolis streets here, too. And the show got done after like 2, so i didn't really hang out, but as far as seeing Guru in the lobby after shows, he was all wandering around at the Target Center when they came through with Smokin Grooves and there were only like three people who came up to him. And he was wearing an all orange adidas track suit (that he'd just been on stage in), it was kind of hard to miss. cool things. By the way, while the whole crew there rocked, I thought they had nothing on the Atmosphere/Heiruspecs show a couple weeks back.
