8349, two hours for you guys Posted by johnbook, Fri Jun-20-03 07:09 PM
Then again, you guys are a band. You can at least jump out of the groove, move into three or four songs and come back into it. I can't stand if I go to a show and the group doesn't even do half the song. The Wu were notorious for this, because not everyone would be on stage at the same time. You might have 7 members, maybe five, maybe three. If I'm going to pay decent money for a show, I want to hear full songs, not a sampler tape.
Some groups will chop their sets in half. Medeski Martin & Wood do this all the time. One hour for the first set, and then anything from an hour to 90 minutes for the second set.
If you're doing festivals, you'll have to deal with schedules, so I would assume a festival, or an opening slot, would be 30-45 minutes. But if you're headlining, pull off two hours. Play 90, wait for the encore, and then finish the hour in a sick fashion.
I tell you ?uest, one day you guys are going to have to have a stage setup, not unlike Loggins & Messina during the NATIVE SONS tour. Trust me, and it's not meant as a joke. The Roots are one of the few groups in hip-hop that still makes me want to listen.
