Did you record the EP live or track it seperately?
props on right now I... almost called up my ex girlfriend but chose to pick up the guitar instead.

he likes to watch howard 'encourage' the ladies on the show to show their 'janets'....I wasn't gonna say anything, but I can't have you saying ben's a bullshitter....that just won't stand!

*sits back and waits for this to backfire, too*

ya well, I'm sure he loves to watch Howard and 'Janets' like most do, but I was mainly refering to the nobody recognizes me after the show humbleness, I never hang out with sex craved groupies...
kinda notion. All I know is at least once in a while he's in on that Incubus tradition, lots of naked chicks backstage, hard to pass up sometimes.

how long did it take you learn how to hit those high notes in foster and inside the live version (I listened to that song for a week straight in awe and to show it off to friends)? I keep topping out after the first cycle. Any tips on expanding vocal range?

More props on priceless (please put that song in the setlist) and the ending ascending from the guitar part in pistola (weird way to explain it but I think you might get it)

I mean was it a good time, and did ya'll get along well. And what do u think of him as an artist/singer/musician ?
The few times I met him I found him very uplifting and enlightening...and how would u compare playing w/ him opposed to Martin Luther. Who do u prefer, and last but certainly not least who does Incubus plan on touring with throughout the rest of 04' ?

5004, (Hey Ben) soooo, I copped the incubus disc yesterday
Posted by Janus, Thu Feb-19-04 10:20 AM
cool. As a musician myself it never ceases to amaze me how a scale limited in notes can produce so much wonderment and fulfillment. I appreciate the way you guys sound within those notes. I, of course am enamoured of Brandon's lyrics which at first seem contrived, but at second glance reveal a poignant vulnerability, wit, and biting sarcasm. How difficult is it for you to shift from hip hop to full on rock? Do you find that the personalities in each genre differ, and cause you to re-balance yourself (I mean, hanging with black thought has gotta be different than hanging with Axl). Was it awkward for you at first?

Tangent: that video is.......damn nnear biblical. loved it.

Why they HELL arent there any pics of the band in the disc? that was mildly irritating!

And Ben, your courage, honesty, and integrity are to be admired. I mighta said I wasnt feelin well and wound up on tour with the "I" LOL
5005, glad you like the disc
Posted by vatoben, Thu Feb-19-04 04:09 PM
there's pictures in there somewhere right? i thought there was.
i just like music. and i like to play whatever moves me. fortunately for me i've been able to play with people that i consider great. hip-hop, rock, it don't matter as long as the songs are there.

The main thing is, the majority of die-hard incubus fans, and even newbies are FLOORED by the music, and I am not just saying this to say it. I mean its a great record.....and you are part of it. And "no" there arent any pics in the cd sleeve, only on the cover. Perhaps the suits thought the "transition" might go down a bit easier if it want so...."in your face" you follow? Best of luck ben.

5031, jamming questions
Posted by Humblecat 4000, Fri Feb-20-04 05:30 AM
Yes I too cannot stand the incubus board. I don't know why I even check it, but I almost lashed out on the kids but realized they can't even read. They're just kids who latched on during the wish you were here and can't comprehend the new level of musicianship the band has reached. In some weird way I'm happy they don't like it because it's shows that it's so good it flew over their heads.

What does Ashley bring out in you playing wise that Jose doesn't and vice versa?

Was the solo in "I'm coming" improvised or did you take a couple takes?

5032, RE: jamming questions
Posted by vatoben, Fri Feb-20-04 08:19 AM
ashley plays every instrument at least as good as i do so he's a mutherfucker to play with. and we grew up on similar stuff so we have a real effortless communication. jose is just dope. he's really unconventional as a drummer and that's a big part if incubus's sound. all those backwards and spilt beats take the songs up a few notches.

the solo in i'm coming was like two or three takes. i always improvise solos when i can. i would love to be on the level of eric krasno from soulive. when you just play what you feel every night.

I agree with you on jose, he has a very ecletic style along with mike and brandon which forged their very unique sound...adding you just took it to a whole another level of sickness. I feel Jose took Copelands' style of fills (hi hats and toms) onto another level of freedom.

whats your thoughts on recording to a click?
Do you have any suggestions for a guitar playing trying to branch out of the pentatonic?

when's the solo album coming out and what happened to the supergrub page with all the other random songs and communicator?

Hey, Mr. Ben not really a question, more of a "WOW... i think your pretty dope". I've been a fan of Incubus' for a while and a fan of The Roots for a while, but seperately, then you migrated, and i was one happy mofo. Saw you make a little cameo at the E.Badu/Roots concert at Universal Ampitheater on the 11th, and I got all excited... "hey look! It's Ben Kenney!" people thought i was crazy. Yay!.... Thank you.

okay... so my sister thought it was dorky that a 22 year old used the words "dope" and "mofo" in a message board that the artists actually look at soooo....

"WOW... I think you are amazingly talented and resilient artist" and your migration made me a very cheerful supporter.

Revised and sister approved.

I like to use the thesaurus.

What song was the "20 minute jam" session/guitar solo thing Mikey was talking about in interviews? how was it? and will it ever see the light of day??

Monuments and Melodies also didn't make the final cut?? will there be material left over for a B-side compilation/e.p?

5073, you should get a house in the surrounding areas
Posted by okayyac, Sun Feb-22-04 02:17 PM
thats where im at...a lot of places are kinda rough but there's some nice neighborhoods that are maybe 10 minutes from cape may and are a LOT cheaper...think half a mil for a house in cape may vs. maybe 100K for one outside of it.

plus they're rising in price so after 10 years you can choose to move and sell the house and make a shitload.

Posted by dred99, Sat Feb-21-04 06:26 PM
Have you played these songs yet? crowded elevator has always been neglected live in the past. All three of these are tight tracks, i can picture you jammin bass on these and the whole group rocking these out. Can you tell me your experience with these songs, and please try to incorporate them on the next tour, all 3 are very energetic tracks.

thanks
5077, i'm not ben....

but "crowded elevator" is my favorite incubus song. "under my umbrella" is the best song from morning view. ben, please try to convince these guys to play these songs live.

edit: also, these 3 songs you mentioned fit the mood of ACLOTM perfectly. it would only make sense to play these songs live,

i just started collecting vinyl...and an older friend of mine gave me free reign on his teenage collection.

i scored:
bad brains, suicidal tendencies, 7 seconds, agnostic front, siouxsie and the banshees, uk subs, jim carroll band, mahavishnu orchestra-inner mounting flame, pharaoh williams

anyway, i might be willing to part with some if you are interested in that sort of thing...

btw, fishbone-truth and soul one of my favs too. love the freddies dead cover. and ma and pa has the best groove period.

Do you have any suggestions for a guitar playing trying to branch out of the pentatonic?

when's the solo album coming out and what happened to the supergrub page with all the other random songs and communicator?

5085, yo ben
Posted by howisya, Sun Feb-22-04 10:07 AM
what was it like recording w/ blackalicious for 'blazing arrow'? that was my favorite album of 2002 (roots was close).

best part of my first roots concert (january 2002, 930 club) was you playing "welcome to the jungle" and "iron man" and black thought started singing along! is he a big metal fan and did you turn him into a dc hardcore head? (i'm from dc) did you ever do any fugazi covers during your solo set?

good luck w/ everything, ben

that every 3rd month or so one of my magazines is sent in one of those 'damaged by the postal service, but we're sorry' bags?

but seriously, what's a good incubus album to start with? i know nothing.

Posted by humchan2k, Mon Feb-23-04 07:04 PM
Ben,

Yo, good lookin' for coming out on Lollapalooza, it was cool to see how the band sounded with you on bass, thought it was a good show...but I really wondered about the setlist....At the show I went to, the following HUGE songs didn't get played...Pardon Me(which I assume you guys HATE to play by now,) Drive, A Certain Shade of Green.......

PLEASE tell me that when I see you in OSAKA, you'll be playing Certain Shade of Green??!!!? Normally I wouldn't be like "Oh famous rock star, won't you play my request?" but I sorta wonder what it would sound like to have you playing the heavy riffs for that song!

God, I love that tune....So excited that you boys are coming to our little corner of the globe. Yay Incubus, Yay Osaka...

P.S. Do you wanna hook up a poor, broke-ass high school english teacher and his broke-ass mate with backstage passes? Please?:)

Whoever or whatever you are go back into the hole you crawled out of. It's people like you that scare the artists away from interaction like this previously good thread. Its people like you that make message boards a breeding ground for incredible stupidity.

OH REALLY???????????????? IS THAT WHAT YOU THINK????????????? WELL I THINK I HAVE A RIGHT TO ASK QUESTIONS THAT PERTAIN TO THE SUBJECT MATTER IN WHICH I AM INTERESTED YOU MARK ASS TRICK!!!!!!!! IF YOU CAN ASK HIM WHAT TYPE OF RECORDING GADGET-BOT HE USED WHEN HE RECORDED "HIPPY HOP SHUFFLE IN A MINOR" AND OTHER QUESTIONS OF THAT SORT THEN I FEEL I HAVE A RIGHT TO ASK HIM ABOUT CRUSHING BITCHES!!!!!!!!!
