47559, Wait, hold up..... Hub left The Roots?!!??!? Posted by HighVoltage, Thu Sep-06-07 09:28 PM
"One of our partners is leaving us tonight, ladies and gentlemen, Leonard Hubbard" - Black Thought @ Moedown 8/31/07.
champagne toast and everything.... is this some sort of twisted inside joke or is our man that held it down for the past 20 years really leaving?
I'm just hearing this now and the show was a week ago and not a peep on this site.... whats going on here??

47581, we dont know if its official or the circumstances relating to it Posted by HighVoltage, Fri Sep-07-07 10:32 AM
they obviously kept this on the down low for a reason so its wrong to jump to conclusions and say its 'disrespectful' when we have no idea whats going on for real.
i seriously doubt this is the case, but what if it was very personal issue or for example he had a medical condition that prevented him from continuing to play... would that still be 'disrespectful'?
wait til you hear the facts first- let alone a confirmation, before passing your judgement.
|
47582, its kind of odd to announce it at a concert and then Posted by punch, Fri Sep-07-07 10:35 AM
keep quiet about it. i guess quest doesnt want an okpinion on it

47583, all this is true, and yall know i mean no disrespect, but im sayin. Posted by , Fri Sep-07-07 11:11 AM
>they obviously kept this on the down low for a reason so its >wrong to jump to conclusions and say its 'disrespectful' when >we have no idea whats going on for real. im sayin. the way the link sounds, it seems like somebody might have known something for a minute. why not make the fans aware AHEAD of time?
>i seriously doubt this is the case, but what if it was very >personal issue or for example he had a medical condition that >prevented him from continuing to play... would that still be >'disrespectful'? see, now this is where i totally understand what your saying. if its a family emergency or if its a health issue or something pressing, then thats fine.
but to just up and leave?
i mean, shit. even ben gave us warning before incubusing us.
hub is a cornerstone of the roots. and no warning?
>wait til you hear the facts first- let alone a confirmation, >before passing your judgement.

i'm seeing them next saturday on sunset =/ it's gonna be different with him not up there... especially without his solo. i think it was the phrenology tour when all of them lined up on the edge of the stage, playing the air bass guitar while he did his thing - classic. sigh. if he really is leaving, i hope he finishes the tour. i'm sure all of us would wanna see him up there one last time knowing that he's leaving for sure.

Me and my girl were second row right in front of Hub for the Roots set at moe.down. Hub was balling like a newborn when the whole crew came out to show love. I was going to post something on Monday when i got home, but i thought maybe everyone already knew, like they had announced it months ago and i missed it. I have to tell u, i was in shock for about 3 minutes after Thought made the announcement. I just kept muttering "Hub can't be leaving". On the plus side I did get a cup and some bubbly, so I got to toast him with the rest of the crew. BTW, that set was ill.

47666, WHOA! Well with that said I have a few words to say.... Posted by tonywashington, Sat Sep-08-07 07:05 AM
Thank you Hub for the years and years of good music.
The first song that I ever heard from the Roots crew was... "I shall proceed and continue to rock the MIC."
It was 1994 and the Roots were featured on the "Red Hot & Cool" CD to fight AIDS. Roy Ayers was a guest on the track Proceed with you all. Honestly, me being a jazz head at the time, I still am, that is what put my cousin and I onto the Roots, the connection with Roy Ayers. BUT what REALLY made my cousin and I fans was the bass, your bass. My cousin and I were and still are both big fans of the bass.
Quick back story... This cat called me over his house, put the "Red Hot & Cool" CD in the stereo and hit play. Then this fool just sat down. I'm was sitting there wondering what CD dude put in the player. As the song begin to play I started to boob my head a bit. But when that bass line came in...MAAAAANNNNNNN! That was it. I was hooked. At that time I had no clue who the Roots were. Ever since then I have been a fan. All because of that funky ass bass line that you dropped on Proceed.
This all lead to my first Roots Crew show. It was the Fugees, Goodie Mob, and The Roots at Michaels 8th Avenue in Glen Burnie, MD back in 1994.
Hub, thank you for your years of dedication to the music we all love. It is very much appreciated. It is only right that you go silently. The same way you have held it down for years.

The Roots will continue to do their thing with the new line up, and Hub has got the midas touch with everything he does. Looking forward to some more of those film scores!!

really that bad, eh?
that's a shame. i checked out his page and didn't see anything that screamed "the next logical choice for bass in the roots". weird.
there are at least a half dozen or so working philly bass players that i know of that could smoke this guy in their sleep. and they would jump at the chance. believe it.
...but it is quite a cloistered enclave down in the land of Larry Gold...surely prone to nepotism...and not likely to go out and about in philly to actually see the amount of talent playing in local bands.
|
47686, how about hearing the dude first before passing judgement? Posted by HighVoltage, Sun Sep-09-07 03:21 AM
like all the sudden ?uest doesn't have a stellar track record for scouting talent? FOH...
|
47687, RE: how about hearing the dude first before passing judgement? Posted by latif888, Sun Sep-09-07 08:30 AM
uh, like i said...by now i've heard a few sample pieces of his playing. i even checked out some of the people he's played for, and was still unimpressed....so you can get the FOH.
it was all folk music, too, so it kinda had me scratching my head. No offense to anyone, it's simply that i can think of many talented players in town that would better fit the bill.
my first roots concert was sans hub, with ben kenney playing bass and guitar double duty. as much as i dig ben's other music, it was a let down for me after looking forward to hearing hub...and there was a big difference in the energy of the performance after seeing them later with LHOB.
He has left some big shoes to fill. We are all speculating at this point, but I am hoping this guy is an interim player.
|
47688, RE: how about hearing the dude first before passing judgement? Posted by excaluber, Sun Sep-09-07 09:03 AM
Ya, I don't really know anything about this guy, but i was just gonna toss in theres no one saying he's permenant...(nor any confirmation hub is gone, even tho it seems likely). I could easily imagine a uber talented bass player isn't always immediately available to just hop in at a moments notice.
"you think its my group simply because im the only one round here whose solution to dealing with fans and journalists isn't punch em in the eye lol"

47689, RE: so i saw them perform last nite in mtl... they got a whiteboy replacin him Posted by Down With Webster, Sun Sep-09-07 07:04 PM
I was in the opening band for the roots in Montreal. I'm a bass player, and let me tell you, Owen Biddle Is truly awesome! Bass playing isn't about "playing the pants off" anyone...it's a support instrument, the foundation - (BASS) if you wanted Jimi Hendrix on Bass...check out Victor Wooten. I've seen at least 15 roots shows...and this guy didn't miss a beat...he played with great feel from start to finish, and truthfully, his playing perfectly complimented the others and never stepped on anyones toes.
I too was in shock at first when I saw hub wasn't on stage, I love hub. A HUGE influence in my playing. However, I have much faith in the remaining members that they would carefully choose a brilliant replacement. Do you think ?uestlove wasn't picky when replacing his BASS PLAYER!!! WOW! You haters need to have some more faith in the roots. lay it to rest! Owen Biddle is dope, wait till you see him on the VH1 Tour!!!

47691, RE: so i saw them perform last nite in mtl... they got a whiteboy replacin him Posted by latif888, Sun Sep-09-07 08:35 PM
Yeah, I'll try to keep an open mind until I see them perform again.
Being showy and busy is not my criteria for good either...
But you wouldn't know that he's really as good as you say by looking him up on google.
The few examples I found didn't jump out at me. Being a musician in Philly and knowing a lot of the really hungry and talented bass players makes my criteria much higher than the average bear.
But like I said, I'll check them out with Owen when they come back around and see for myself.

47704, ?uestlove's Front Page Post Posted by handle, Mon Sep-10-07 12:25 PM
Let me end all speculation ladies and gentlemen and officially announce that yes indeed Hub played his last show as a member of The Roots on August 31st of this year.
One has to understand off the bat to be a member of this group is to sacrifice your life. If you look at it (and this is applies to most of the artists that you talk about on this site) there is nothing "normal" about our lives. Well at least my life. (Hold the violins please.... there is cool shit like 1am jams with Prince in his living room watching Joni Mitchel dance like a teenager.....but there is also a downside like being in your mid 30s and your dating life is still on some high school shit.)
Even as i write this i got 34 minutes to haul my ass to rehearsals for the VH-1 tour. (this is after sleeping for 5 hours fresh from working with the Score winner of the VH-1 Hip Hop Awards, which came after a 4:30am lobby call to the Las Vegas airport, which came after all the crazy MTV activity and gigs i had to do, which came after the morning flight and the 6am lobby call from Montreal which came after the 10 hour mission to get a lawyers affidavit to get me into Canada (a mere half hour before stagetime)---of course not before trashing my entire house looking for my lost passport.---that was just 48 hours.
try to make that 17 years.
This isn't a pity party. Nor an explanation. Just a confirmation. I understand that most of you are a little miffed that you weren't given the option to say "goodbye". Truth is Hub really didn't want to make a big deal about this. Which is probably why we defied him anyway and had a "moment" onstage which got quite emotional after his last solo. We got about 16 bottles of bubbly and tried to have a 2 fish/5 loafs of bread distribution to the crowd so that we could properly send him off.
So what of The Roots now? We've had the workload of about 7 groups and have been on the road since most of you were in high school (or even worse listening to your older siblings cassettes of our first couple of albums) and sometimes opportunity knocks. (in this case it's in the form of film/tv scoring)....the show will go on (i have yet to go to those "what are we gonna do now?!?!" posts on the boards.) it went on after Rahzel, Scratch, and Ben. and it will go on.
I say we use this moment and opportunity to raise our cyber glass and toast Hub in his new endeavors.
(raises glass) -?uesto

47707, Thanks Leonard Hubbard. Much props from me. Posted by Queal Jay, Mon Sep-10-07 01:03 PM
Dude is mad humble and cool and I wish him much success in whatever is next for him in his musical endeavors.
And as for these people on here talking a lot of silly shit...know this about a band or group...everyone in it sacrifices a lot of their individual talent or musical goals and focus to give the group just what it needs in order to make it work. There's a push and pull on your psyche of whether you should do you or continue to be a team player. This cat did it for 17 years...without ever being mentioned in the same breath as Tarik or Ahmir...that alone demands respect.
We still have the bootleg shows, the shows we've been to and the records to listen to if we want some Hub nostalgia. Let's appreciate that.

As ?uest said, they continued after Scott, Ben, and Malik left. Just look at the solid albums they synthesized after their departures. Then again, Hub was one of the main reasons I started listen to the band in the first place. His knack for grooves (what to play and when to play) cannot be easily replaced. You can quote me on that.

I guess everyone deserves to leave the touring scene and chill....but DAMN!! I don't care who joins the fellas now, the live shows will never be the same without Leonard Hubbard. I'm truly hurt. Seeing that bro wit the chew stick, hittin notes, rockin a hoodie, and just being COOL just adds so much to the shows. Hearing that bass....damn. Oh well, they say change is good. I guess time will tell.
