there really is a FREE FUGEES concert presented by VERIZON on Feb, 06th 2006 in Hollywood. It is also broadcasted by V Music.

THE ROOTS TO HOST 3rd ANNUAL JAM SESSION
The legendary hip-hop band is again calling all vocalists, musicians and aspiring artists to take part in 5-hour jam session on February 7 at Hollywood’s Key Club; Hosted by Black Thought, Dave Chappelle, and Don Cheadle.

LOS ANGELES (January 30, 2006) Next week, as the entire music industry descends upon Los Angeles for Grammy week, The Roots—named one of the "20 greatest live acts in the world” in a 2003 Rolling Stone readers’ poll— will host their third annual Jam Session, co-hosted by Black Thought, Dave Chappelle, and Don Cheadle in association with LIVE FOR DARFUR. The event is presented by Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, in theaters March 3rd.

The private, invitation-only event, will feature a live five-hour jam session with rotating special guests, taking place at the Key Club, 9039 W. Sunset Blvd., in West Hollywood, Calif., on Tuesday, Feb. 7th at 10p.m. The event will again be produced by Okayplayer.com, Goodtime Girl Productions and Keldof Productions.

The Roots held their first pre-Grammy party in 2003 as an alternative to the more business oriented Grammy parties. The jam session offers the large core of musicians and executives a chance to entertain and be entertained. As with jam sessions, the emphasis will be on the freedom of expression sparked with the energy of live musical support from The Roots. Past attendants and performers include Norah Jones, Tom Cruise, Common, Alicia Keys, Sharon Stone, Sanaa Lathan, Musiq, Martin Luther, Wood Harris, Anthony Hamilton, Omar Epps, Mos Def, Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, Faith Evans, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, Musiq, Aisha Tyler, and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

"Most industry parties are a little too stuffy and are limited to performances by one or two artists. We created this event in order to put the focus back on the music and give major artists as well as new talent a chance to take part in a business and musical exchange," says The Roots founder and drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson.

This year’s anticipated guest list boasts Def Jam Recordings president and CEO Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Island Def Jam Music Group chairman LA Reid, Common, Erykah Badu, Incubus, 311, Jeremy Piven, John Legend, Ben Harper, Martin Luther, Bill Maher, Van Hunt, Nikka Costa, Will Smith, Mos Def, Will.I.Am, Spike Lee, Talib Kweli, Dave Navarro, Kelis, Kanye West, Floetry, and more...

Dave Chappelle's Block Party, directed by Oscar winner Michel Gondry, captures exclusive performances and crowd excitement during a once-in-a-lifetime free block party in a Brooklyn neighborhood. The day-long, life-affirming celebration of music and comedy, and history and community, featured all-new freestyle standup material by Dave Chappelle. With all concert music arranged and produced by The Roots' Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, The Roots performed and also provided musical backing for an incredible lineup including Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Dead Prez, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and -- reunited for their first performance in over seven years -- The Fugees. Rogue Pictures releases Dave Chappelle's Block Party in theaters nationwide on March 3rd.

LIVE FOR DARFUR is a worldwide awareness campaign co-chaired by Don Cheadle and Djimon Hounsou that rallies high-profile talent, including Coldplay, Carlos Santana, Destiny’s Child, Norah Jones, Annie Lennox, and other top artists to help raise awareness of the crisis in the Darfur region of the Sudan. LIVE FOR DARFUR's participation in the event is produced by Red Carpet Media Partners for the 501(c)3 non-profit Save Darfur Coalition. To learn more, visit www.savedarfur.org.

The Roots are: Black Thought (MC), ?uestlove (MD), Lenoard "Hub" Hubbard (bass) and Kamal Gray (keyboards). Support musicians include Frankie Knuckles (percussion, Kanye West, D’Angelo), and world renowned Captain Kirk (guitar).

Man, they didn't let us in till 11ish...then all we got was a red band.....could've bought that.....

Anyway, The Roots jumped off right away, then Erykah played with a band I think is called "Funk Shui". Then The Roots hopped back on....there were a lot of artists.....Common, Talib, Bavid Banner, of course My favorite...Martin Luther, Bushwacked (spelled this way?), Cee-Lo, Snoop-Dogg and some others.....about 2 ish, they bring on some awful R&B singer NEO? then someone else and my mood started to diminish....I went downstairs to a table I was at with a friend and Snoop and his crew sat next to us. I decided to stay a little bit longer but once they brought out Fall Out Boy I was out....I was too tired....left about 2:30am....so someone else needs to fill in the rest and anything I missed because I had to get home to bed since I got up at 6:30....check out my post time.....oh yeah I am tired....huge bags under my eyes....

Nice meeting you buildingblocks and thebiatch....nice seeing you again Sweeney....

Questo....I tried not to stand in front so I could get your sticks....I know you were gonna give em to me.....but man you like never left the stage.....next time....

It was a great event. The scene before was sucked ass. It took about 2 damn hours to get in. I barely made the cut because after they gave me my band I heard them say "only 3 more" so I know some people are pissed today. Dave Chappelle was in classic form, Bushwick Bill spit on the mic for a while and got his boogie on. Erykah got on stage with Wendy from Prince's Revolution band and her sister, Big Daddy Kane ripped, Snoop passed the mic and the blunt, Warren G and Yo Yo also there. Ne yo did sang about 2 songs, Martin Luther, Capt Kirk did one rock song, David Banner did a couple. It got real slow at the end with a couple of newer artists that were ok. Dice Raw got on for a minute, The dude from Fall Out Boy did Prince's "Kiss". Ehh whatever. Celebrities I spotted, Don Cheadle, Spike Lee, Queen Latifah, a few actreses I know by face but not by name. I stayed to the end which was about 3am. Tired as hell but worth it. Definetly a great time.
46311, BEST SHOW EVER!!!
Posted by Battle Max, Wed Feb-08-06 11:36 AM
I couldnt think of another way to turn 25 at midnight than Badu on stage (finally got to peep the ass in person...wow!!!). My personal hightlight was Big Daddy Kane, common and snoop passing the blunt to the crowd. Cee lo killed it and Bushwick bill was loaded on stage acting a fool. When BT showed up he took the time to stop and give me a pound and chop it up for a few minutes, that was cool as hell i didnt even go up to him. The line outside was thick i was fortunate to show up early enough to get in the door(im sure there is alot of pissed off people right now). I spotted a few people in the crowd Will I Am, David Banner,Queen Latifah,Ron Jeremy and that white guy that owns that cat house thats on HBO. I bounced at around 2:30 with a big ass smile on my face and on my 6th Bacardi and coke(which was free all night) and im at work with an hour and half worth of sleep. Best night i have ever had thanks OKP!!

And from reading some of your reviews, I think last year's may have been better.

This year was much better. Too tired to go into detail, but I enjoyed myself a lot more this year, better performances. Not that last year sucked or anything.

Here's my recap of the jam session (up till about 2:30, it seemed to be winding down a little......plus the parking garage closed at 3 and I had to work at 8)

The order from what I remember:
-Don Cheadle (Didn't really do much but he's one of my favorite actors so it warrants mentioning)

-Dave Chappelle (Dude was cracking me up all night.....particularly with the "Piss on You" performance)

-The Roots (Web, Star, Dynamite, Stay Cool)

-Funk Shway featuring Doyle Bramhall II (of SRV, Fiona, mad other people fame), Wendy (of the Revolution), Susannah Melvoin (The Family), Mike Elizado (Dre's bassist), James Poyser, Quest, and Miss Erykah Badu aka "Lowdown" Lorretta Brown. These guys took a moment to get things moving but they eventually took off. Doyle is a sick guitarist and once Badu took the lead vocally she did her thing (and she remains one of the most beautifull female artists I've ever laid eyes on in person). That "Annie Don't Wear No Panties" joint at the end of their mini-set was mind-bending.

-Big Daddy Kane who still rocks a stage as well as anyone (Ain't No Half Steppin', Raw, Set it Off, Warm it up Kane)

-Common (Act Too-Love of my Life, The Light w/Badu)

-Kweli (Get By)

Starts getting blurry here but:

-Bushwick Bill! WTF?!? Seeing this dude was pretty crazy. He did some verse I didn't recognize and then his "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" verse. You could tell he didn't want to give up the mic or get off the stage.

-David Banner (cleaned up with a jacket and tie on). Played something into "Like a Pimp", even had the Roots playing in Screw-mode at one point.

-Somewhere in here: Omarion, Neo, Martin Luther......I don't know, I was much bigger on the hip-hop portions of the show outside of Badu's participation (did I mention I'm in love with her?).

-SNOOOOOOOP!! You can tell a star when you see one and this dude is that. He basically just came out and freestyled while pulling blunts from his Steelers cigarette case. The band backed him up with a few trademark beats, including "G Thing", "Dre Day", and "Drop it Like It's Hot".

-Captain Kirk did some solo rock stuff that to be honest I wasn't really feeling too much but to be honest it might have just been the setting and the fact that he was following legends onstage.

I left at about 2:30, I waited online for almost 2 hours (which is a personal record I believe, especially since I was solo), and I slept about 3 hours or so.......and I couldn't be happier about it.

Star sightings offstage: The Roots, Badu, Bill Maher, Spike Lee....that's about all I can think of at the moment, VIP upstairs was maxed out by the time I got in which is probably where most folks were at.

Much love to Okayplayer fam for getting me in, to all the great artists who participated, to the Key Club bartenders/bouncers, and to all those who sponsered the event. I hope to be a part of this next year as well.
