44747, Wassup everybody, I’m checking in once more
Posted by Talib Kweli, Fri Mar-31-06 02:59 AM
Wassup everybody, I’m checking in once more. First off I would like to say thanks to everyone who has been hitting me with messages on Myspace, they are appreciated.. I have tons of emails to still read, and I answer them randomly, so please be patient if I havent responded to a friend request or email, and of course I cant answer every question. I almost never join groups, and I usually dont check peoples pages for music they want me to hear. I hope this doesn’t offend, but I have a box of demos at the crib I havent gotten to the bottom of, and you can’t imagine how many request I get to check out music. Be ambitious tho, don’t depend on my opinion to know what’s hot..I don’t always know what I’m talking about. With that said, I do check some of it out, and good or bad, if I check it I’ll respond. Also, thanks to everybody checking out the radio show, Blacksmith Power Hour with myself, Dave Dar and DJ Eque every wednesday on raw xm66 at 6pm est. I’m getting a good response. I wanna send some love to the kids at the Global Kids event I spoke at yesterday, they were sharp, bright and focused. Global Kids is a New York City based nonprofit that creates educational experiences that global awareness and career readiness in today’s information based world. Children in the inner city lack resources and info, and this program tries to get these things into the public schools..For more info go to http://www.globalkids.org.

Speaking of New York City, it has come to my attention that the Radisson hotel in Queens, as of Febuary 26, has not only evicted Katrina survivors, but is suing each family for 3000 dollars plus interest! At the time of the storm, almost 30% of New Orleans residents lived below the poverty line, and most of the black people lost their jobs and are living worse off than ever. Don’t get it twisted tho. Even though the majority were overwhelmingly poor and black, this is a human rights issue. These people have no where to go.. The corporation that owns Radisson must feel like theyve done their part as a business, and it’s the government’s responsibilty, but we know what happens when you leave it up to the administration. To evict and sue these people is evil. I’ve been all over the world, and everywhere I go on the planet there is a motherfuckin Radisson. They are not struggling. In Scandinavia the Radisson is a four star hotel! I’m sure NY is not the only city where this is happening, so I encourage you all to share stories here and get down with folks who are doing something about it. One such organization is the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. For more info go to http://www.mxgm.org.

Also, if you are in nyc at the beginning of april, I’m performing twice.. check the shows on my myspace page.. shout out to my friends I’ve connected with..D Nice, I need more pictures, Makeba Mooncycle, send me some music. Rubix wassup, Gaby wassup, JRawls holla.

One Love,

That's jacked about the Radisson, I bet some quick action to boycotting and/or demonstration would get them thinking twice. Maybe that's a pipe dream but I'll find the ones around here and open channels.

Cmon to Cleveland, dude.

I would not act like this no matter who it was, I am a big kweli fan, but honestly people on here get too excited of some shit like this. I mean it is cool to be a fan, and it is corny to call someone an okayplayer hater. I do not hate on any okayplayer artists at all. But when they post I will not click on their shit so fast it would break my mouse and then praise them like they are a god

that shit is corny

the people that say thanks and keep doing a good job are fine with me, it is those extra fan boys that go alittle too far and shit

If you aren't an okayplayerhater, why would that rhyme offend? If you are an okayplayerhater, well, you saw what the one above just said, be proud of it. I never understood the backlash from that rhyme, cuz we all know there are some hateful ones. And it's true, they do "always got something to say" ie, dude having to open his mouth when he could've just walked out this post if he didn't like it.

Anyway, big up Kweli, you gonna do a show in Greenville, NC again? Checked your show here, downtown at the Attic(changed to a different name now) some years ago, it was crazy.
44792, yeah, but lyricistfan is a bitch... you know?

Is there a source for this? I searched on google and yahoo news for "Radisson Queens Katrina" and couldn't find any stories about people being sued. I moved my search to the web (to see if maybe there was something out there about it, as opposed to just searching through the news page), and that didn't give any information about the lawsuit.

While the eviction sounds real (especially considering that the FEMA money given to survivors for rent was starting to expire), and I was able to find some information backing that up, I'm curious about the lawsuit part.
44797, That shit is real AND it's going on all over America
Posted by lovelyone80, Sat Apr-01-06 10:22 AM
lots of Hotels are telling the Katrina victims they have to leave and presenting them with bills because the government stopped paying for the rooms...it's sad but that shit is real. But you know, they don't like to report the kind of shit through the media.

Kweli, real talk, whatever influence you have to help facilitate a long-term solution for those families, it is needed. I got an e-mail from N'COBRA about the work MXGM has been doing on behalf of Katrina and Rita evacuees and a press conference being held April 4 in New York on the matter. I live in Houston but i wanted to know what was being done to help get evacuees long-term employment and housing, and part of the response i received was:

Thus far no effective work has been able to be done by the supporters to provide client sevices in that critical area. The most immediate crisis is emergency suitable housing paid for by the city welfare agencies if not FEMA.

As someone on the sidelines i'm not about to criticize what's being done, AND i'm thankful for the brothers and sisters lending support, but we GOTTA figure out long-term solutions or people are still gonna be living in hotels come the end of NEXT hurricane season.

For anybody who wants to participate, the press conference info is below:

TUESDAY, April 4, 2006
Press Conference: 9:00 a.m.
Hearing: 9:30 a.m.

Second Press Conference: 12:00 p.m.

Civil Court of the City of New York, County of Queens

89-17 Sutphin Blvd., Jamaica, NY 11435

P.S. Since the initial filing of suit, Radisson Hotels is said to have increased the amount it's requesting from $3,000 to $6,000.
