Chances are, he'll answer.
4460, what if we all asked the same bland question to 9th?
Posted by ricky_BUTLER, Fri Feb-20-04 12:21 PM
changing it up only occasionally?

but seriously, what was it like working with Pete Rock?

and what was the best beat, in your mind, that you played for Jay?

Pete is as brilliant today as he was ten years ago....only twenty times better......wait until SS2...

As for Jay, man, that's a hard one, I think this Bohannon chop I did..........

Since you and Pete Marriot are the real FL pros around here...

Can you recommend any resources for them, or did you learn everything on your own by messing around?

AND when you've got some downtime, can get get some FL tips from ya? (Lesson, or LB site, or something! Us broke producers want some tips from the masters!)

4494, What The Future Holds
Posted by from_me_to_u, Fri Feb-20-04 01:56 PM
Ever since I got down with the music, I've watched almost all of my favourite emcees and producers (with the exception of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth and Gang Starr) change there style or shill for the record label at one point or another in their career.

Now that you are considered an "A List Producer" and Little Brother are on the brink. Are you going to use any discretion with respects to the artists you choose to produce for or the type of music Little Brother releases. I know you have priorities and need to make a living, but sometimes the payoff doesn't happen when one forces to be more commercially viable. Ask Bootcamp, OC, Nas before God Son, etc.

Please just don't go out like Mos Def or M Def as he likes to call himself now. The new stuff I heard from him outside of "Beef" is extremely weak. A track with Ludacris? a beat produced by Swizz? I'm all for expansion and diversity, but this is the same guy who brought us "Umi Says". If your going to do a track with them make it sound unique. Make it look like they are featured on your track not vice versa. Any how I hope Mos Def is keeping his best material for his LP.

I just hope you guys, as much of a cliché as this sounds, "keep it real" and like De La says "Keep It Right".

Just out of curiosity who do you feel is the next artist/group or producer to have the same sort of success as you and LB has?

Strange Fruit?
Saukrates?
Murs?

Just a side note: "The Righteous Way To Go" - Edgar Allan Floe was a great cut and is engraved in my head.

All the best in the future and thank you for breathin life into the music, you guys were my highlight for 2003.

"Loved By A Few, Hated By Many, Respected By All"
4495, RE: What The Future Holds
Posted by NinthWonder, Sun Feb-22-04 04:59 PM
yep...we're keepin it right.....

we are what we are.....we never pigeoned-holed ourselves...although we got a neo-soul/conscious rap comparison out of the gate, we just talk about real life. That's why we named the album "The Listening" to actually see how many cats would be listening........we are the average cats, who talk about everyday stuff that normal people can relate.......Kanye West is now doing that on a major level, to show these CEO's that reality sells in the music industry, whatever your reality is......

What's going on with a 9th produced complilation album a la the Beat Generation series? Basically a fully produced 9th album without a single artist/group being the focal point (LB, Murs)...but rather the producer being the focal point.

I know this is probably a waste of your time, but I've never had the outlet to actually interact with an artist I'm a fan of.

So I hope you don't mind the "left field" nature of the following questions. What are your thoughts on the following people or subjects:

1. John Mayer
2. George Bush Jr.
3. Cam'Ron and The Diplomats
4. High Speed Soul Samples
5. 50 Cent
6. Black Stereotypes in the media
7. Middle East Situation
8. Michael Moore of Bowling For Columbine fame
9. Common's Electric Circus album
10. Bill O'Reily

If you have time to answer all of them with short one word or sentence answers that would be cool. Otherwise continued success. I'm sure your hard work and appreciation of your fan base will bear the just fruits you deserve. God Speed.

How do you find acapellas too, cause my boy got a good remix album for one of those cats outta Yonkers....... Go Figure. But please let me know how you can put out those remixes without legal involvement.

I see how you do it, but because it's being sold, doesn't the artist have a say so? Or is is done in such a unique way where it's different? Or they don't mind it cause it's not doing major numbers? I would love for this remix project thing to be broken down further, so.... 9th, if you can give to me in depth that'll be cool.If you have a business associate who has the time to break it down if you dont,my email addy is politicsmajor@yahoo.com.

Missed you guys in New Orleans at the Howlin' Wolf.... had a PowerPoint presentation due the next day(Professor don't care about hip hop)...but when your in Florida.... I'll be there.... Loooking foward to the Minstrel Show. Just wanna let you guys know that my part of the SouthEast(Tallahasee Florida) are applauding you guys for bringing a new perspective to southern music.I know I been waiting for a long time for something like this out of the south. First off, congrats on all your success so far. I have 2 questions for you. First, what do you think of remixing an old project that had shoddy production, but has tight lyricism (ex: Can-I-Bus)? Second, what made you pick the name Little Brother?

Posted by shanilovemusic, Tue Feb-24-04 07:14 AM
Hey. Just want to congratulate you, LB and JL for putting out the best music you can. My question is...do you know of any female producers in the industry who you could say were on the same levels as some of the big names(Yourself, Primer, Ge-ology, The RZA, Pete Rock, Alchemist, Jay Dee, Madlib, Dr. Dre, etc etc.)? I know this field is pretty male-dominated. The only female producer that stick out in my mind is Missy Elliot right now (I'm sure there are others). Do you have to be an artist first? I know these are alot of questions, but I have been considering becoming a producer and i want different ideas about how to start. I've looked at it from every angle and I know it would be difficult, but I still want to try. I don't even have enough money or space to get all the stuff I need yet. I have this undeniable passion for music and it would be a shame to not test it out. Any advice, questions, comments or ideas you have would be appreciated.

-Peace
4652, RE: Ask 9th Wonder a question-female producer

I don't know any big female producers with the exception of Co-Co Chanel(she used to be in the group called Kings of Swing)....
Now she does joints with D-Block and a few others......

I think the best way to get in the game as far as a producer is to have a story with your name.........and to be in a group with some dope emcees......beats are just beats until they become songs......

4680, Marketing Idea
Posted by from_me_to_u, Tue Feb-24-04 10:52 AM
I'm currently a marketing student at Ryerson University (Toronto, Canada) and I really believe that there was a real business sense to the way you guys gained exposure, promoted your product and parlayed that into a major record label and turned yourself into a big league producer in the industry. All on a shoestring budget no less. For that I must tip my hat to ya'll. With that being said I wanted to pitch an idea I had which I felt would be perfect for you guys. Please feel free to use it or even better criticize it. As a student of the trade, it's the only way I can learn and perfect the theory all these teachers stuff in my head.

The premise: Mass Customization of Music which can be used for Retail Albums, Production Projects. Mixtapes or Exclusive Web downloaded paid content (LittleBrother.Com, Napster, Itunes).

The idea: Yourself/LB's would set up a area on Okayplayer or on your artist page and ask your fans to vote on an array of samples you've cleared, know you can clear or personally are a fan of. For those who aren't "crate diggers", you would also provide a "real audio" clip so they can hear the original song and imagine what can possibly be done with the ‘break’.

Then based on voting results you would select the sample choice of ‘the people’ and inform them where this can be found (i.e. new LB's album, new Murs, new Nas album, new Justus League mixtape etc). Since every fan is registered you can do "direct sale" emails informing them of the release, the sample used based on their personal favorite registered in their voting results, and the medium it’s available on (CD, web content, etc). This is not only cost effective but focused. I feel making this web exclusive material in audio files encrypted in copy protected WMA file format would help limit piracy to a degree (Can't eliminate priacy) and provide higher profit margins than retail since the middle man is removed from the equation completely.

Fans will then be enticed to hopefully purchase your album, web content, mixtape or album the project appears on because they feel personally attached to the song. Essentially it will be music for the people, by the people.

As a person who downloads quite a few albums, I can honestly tell you that I feel obligated to buy albums from artist who represent me and produce music of substance. For example 50 Cent bootlegged, Petestrumentals purchased. I'm sure many of your 'base' fans are the same. The casual fan regardless of the music you put out will be a habitual retail consumer or bootlegger depending on their personal psychographics. With that being said making music for your base is key and eventually based on popularity the casual fan will come aboard. And if you need proof positive of this phenomena ask Big Boi and Andre 3000.

Music, outside the few exceptions has become so disingenuous and market driven. I honestly believe that good ideas can co-inside with relevant soundscans.

When you have a minute, please let me know what you think of the idea, if it has any relevance and as crazy as it may seem weather ya'll would ever considering using such a formula.

Ninth,

You'd better be spinning this weekend at the show at BB Kings. I'm rolling through with a large crew, the show is gonna be crazy. I am gonna smack Nature when I see him on Saturday, I dont know what he is thinking. He has some weak in house producers and he really does NOT have a good ear for beats. I understand that he has no deal so he doesnt have that much $$$ to be throwin around for top production, but he needs to look at Khrysis or something. I WILL get him up on you and Khrysis, I know you respect his work and can get something worked out. Look for us at the show Sunday.

If you see a 207 area code number callin, pick that shyt up! That is Maine on the line right thea!!!

Ninth, good job so far on the Listening "the yo,yo" being one of my fav. joints, TBA and the mixtapes, you've brought a lotta heat so far, keep it up!

My question(s) for you is/are this/these), would you also consider doing R&B stuff and not just focusing your total strength on producing hip hop? Have you ever done joints without looping samples? What other rappers do you hope to work with in the near and distant future, when are we expecting another Little Brother record and what do you think about you guys repping the Dirty so far and working with other Dirty South cats that are talented.

Yo,
Im very curious to know hat your favorite beat/track on "Black is Back" is...
The new "Threat" beat is pretty incredible in my mind (The first threat on BisB, not Threat2..even tho its nice too)
"What more can I say" is very good...
"Public Service Announcement" is powerfull as siiiittttt....

I also wanna know if you have heard the Black Album remix by Kno, the producer/"emcee" for Cunninglynguists...it is >>VERY<< impressive also

One more thing...its related to >>see below<<, but I just wanted to put it out there that seeing you and Kanye potentially on the same stage, and hopefully "pullin out some of the stops" has got me amped to no end...

be EZ, love you cats

when I had heard the horns on the "the listening" (the last track, not the album, to clarify) I was just floored. I have a hard time picking a favorite from the album, but the beat was just really inspiring, and I thought the pete rock horns were dope, and phonte and big pooh killed it lyrically too. That shit was just utterly visceral man. A couple of questions now...

What was pete rock's crib like, like what kind place was it?

Now that beatmaking has become your sole profession, is there anything you miss about your life before you guys blew up? Also, what is it like trying to stay close to your fam and the people you care about now?

Another song I really liked was that joint you did with pete rock on "class is in session" the "whenever wherever whatever you say" (I don't remember the exact title) joint with the maxwell vocals, I always liked that maxwell song and hearing y'all flip it up was tight. Is it possible to find that album on vinyl? or in any physical form?

one last one, if you're at liberty to say, how much have you and LB invested into production equipment total (like computer hardware, software, tables, mics, etc.)? You don't have to divulge a specific number, but I'm interested in learning how much a producer has to invest.

I'm definitely looking forward to the minstrel show, and I'm sure y'all won't disappoint. Thanks for your answers! Peace.

4793, Beat Techniques question...
Posted by jiggyjazzman, Wed Feb-25-04 07:54 AM
Two of my bois do beats. Mostly on a low end keyboard and computer. One of my bois is very good, the other okay. My question is when doing beats, how do you get realistic sounding instruments instead of having midi sounding instruments? I'm asking because as a saxophonist, I can hear the difference and frankly, it becomes annoying at times. Particularly when the instrumental is good.

which soul group did you sample it from if i could know-
i know d.i.t.c. is discreet but i collect alot of soul records for listening. the closest i got to it was The Spinners?
worth a try.

you should fuck with some Danny pearson shit if you havent yet.

and to the FL babies...
its pretty useful to use your own sounds when sequencing. sample drums from breaks, or double up sounds. and if you dont got the 1 of the 2 latest versions of FL then you should. demo ones dont save so dont fuck with it unless youre recording to tape. COMPRESSION PLUG IN EFFECT is a big must if youre drums aint hittin right... if you got turns hook that shit up and chop records up with shit like cool edit then load it into FL. and its obvious you should at least have a decent keyboard to drop bass lines or drop ins. well thats how i do.

heres some old ass shit i been workin on for my boy.

what up, 9th. this is baskaf from houston. i was talking to dj cipher and my homeboy rico the other night and they was telling me that you guys came down to houston a long time ago. they approached me cuz they said they knew the dude who designed the LB listening shirt i was wearing at the club that night. frank wayne something. we got into a discussion about you guys coming to houston. cipher made a very valid point. he said alot of fans would be happy to have you come down, but bottom line is cats ain't talking about paying nothing. pissed me off cuz when slum village came to spy, i paid to see them. got kicked out cuz some underage dude in our entourage tried to get his drink on. roots concert at numbers was sold out before a brother even got paid. bottom line is, i would gladly pay to see some quality music in this town. i'm tired of cats with jerseys and grilles selling out shows here while i look on these boards and all the east coast people talk about how dope the roots show was. dude, you don't even have to come to houston. dallas or austin and i'll be straight.

i hope you guys do get a major deal. me and my boys love the hell outta the listening, but only one of us has the actual album. that's one out of like... thirteen. AND WE ALL LOOKED. the one that got it had to journey to shangri-la or some shit just to get it.

i make beats. i used to use acid, but i'm working on fruity loops right now. had it not been for you, i wouldn't know about using cool edit to sample. now that i'm learning fruity, i wish i had used it sooner. i've noticed that you have a particular snare you like to use. I LOVE THIS SNARE! i have loved it since the first time i heard whatever you say. my qustion is what is it called and how did you get it.

4806, 9thmatic?!?!?!?!?!??!?!
Posted by from_me_to_u, Wed Feb-25-04 03:40 PM
This is the same kid (Ryerson University, Toronto Canada) who's been pitching you marketing/promotional ideas the last couple of days. Here's another one I've been flirting with.

The problem is with every good idea; there are a whole bunch of clones and a truckload of saturation which follows. This ultimately weakens the effectiveness of the original successful idea or concept.

With that being said it's no mystery that everyone is buzzing on the whole "remix" trend you started. But through it all, the one album everyone is afraid to touch is Illmatic. For good reason too, that album is the Holy Grail. But there is an interesting marketing proposition within the challenge of reworking a classic.

Premise: Remix Nas’ Illmatic. On the strength of your production and clout in the industry it can be used as a dual propose vehicle; one would be to promote your abilities, the other would be creating a platform for the Justus League to gain notoriety. Other outcomes could include an invitation to contribute to the Illmatic anniversary project, get a major deal for Justus League artists or at the very least parlay the buzz and “street mixtape sales” into a larger budget from Atlantic/Warner for the LB sophomore release.

With the 10th anniversary of its release date fast approaching and Columbia planning on re-releasing an anniversary edition I thought you can take a different spin on the whole remix phenomena and beat Columbia records to the punch at the same time.

Because this album both lyrically and conceptually is near perfect, it would be wrong to use different beats. What I think would be an interesting approach would be to keep the original record used. But chop it up; sample it or whatever production technique you guys use in a different and refreshing way. This way you’re not stepping on the "masters" shoes and at the same time really flexing your production talents. You will really sell others on your talents by taking already classics and allow fans both old and new to appreciate and look at it in a different light.

Essentially you would have to come with your best material, because you’re going to be compared with the likes of Pete Rock, Primo, Extra P, Tip etc. A daunting task but no less, but I guarantee you will be the talk of the whole rap game. Something like this has a polarizing effect. People will love you like George W. Bush, or they will hate you like George W. Bush. But at the end of the day, people will be talking and feel strongly about it and that’s a marketer’s objective. This is extremely risky and there is little to no margin of error here. But like my mother says "To be successful you must be willing to accept the possibility and anguish of failure".

Starting with God Stepson and concluding with 9thmatic would be a climatic end to the whole remix phenomena and usher in the new era of 9th wonder the big league producer, the Justus League and the rebirth of true school hip hop. No beads, coffee shops or sandals, just good music.

Illmatic is pretty much the "bible" of true school hip hop. And you and I both know the whole industry is waiting for you to go there. Just like you did with the Black Album remix and essentially made everyone else (with the exception of Kev Brown) look like amateur hour. If you don’t capitalize on demand it becomes a lost opportunity.

Now the real twist here is not only the Illmatic remix but also putting the Justus League on. 9thmatic will not only be a showcase of your production skills but also get the Justus League mainstream attention. For many outside the realm of Okayplayer.com, backpack fan base and NC it's a name that has very little meaning. Just as yours did a year ago before Little Brother and God Stepson really took off. Doing 9thmatic would essentially create some name awareness for the members of the JL (Ceasar, LB, Scudda, Floe, etc). You would showcase one member on each classic track. Saving "It ain't hard to tell” for Phonte and Big Pooh. Again, just as the bar must be raised on the production end, the same is true for the lyrics. Nas really hit the nail on the head with this masterpiece. You and the Justus League would have to do the same plus double. But I think ya'll can pull it off. Big Ideas are given to those who are big enough to pull it off.

The anticipation, coupled with the reintroduction of the original release (10 anniversary release) and the major label signing of LB would really give this project wheels. If I'm off base then so be it. But I see this being an extremely ambitious project which would have extremely large payoffs in the end.

I present this to you as a student. I appreciate your opinion and your constructive criticism. I’d like to think I have all sorts of crazy ideas like this. So if I can be of help then that would be great. I’m a strong believer that quality is marketable, not ad-nausea. Ad-nausea are for the Ja-Rules and 50 Cent’s of the world. And based on his popularity, struggling acting career and last record my point speaks for itself. Short money with no focus of long term objectives. I wonder if hes going to be able to put his kid through school 10 years from now on the money made from "I'm Real and Put It On Me". For the sake of his kids I hope he put something int he bank. Anyhow, I think I’ve gone on enough. If you want me to go into further detail or want to hear more of my ideas which I’d like to think are RBG (Revolutionary But Gangsta) feel free. Continued success and all the best in the future.

First off, this post has gone platinum!!! I wanna know what cats are you feeling from the chi?? It's a lot of talent out here.(All nat,fam tree, diverse,Iomas Marad,J.U.I.C.E,rhymefest,etc.) Would you work with some of these guys?? I spoke to Kanye, he told me about the session yall had in NC. This may sound funny to you, But I'm the reason Kanye knows about you guys. I told him about yall last year, when I tried to do a show with yall and him. He was like "little brother??" "the dude in my hotel lobby always calls me little brother" He though it was funny I told him to check out the site.(Spoke to Phonte over email, $1500 was too steep at the time, I didn't know if anyone would come) So I spoke to him again months later and he said I did a song with yall. At the time Kanye was willing to do the show for little of nothing too. I look back and should have made that happen. I guess life is funny like that. If your willing to work with any of these cats outta chicago let me know, I could put them in contact with you. BTW Rasheed is hungry again, you need to do a track with him as well...

Big up to 9th Wonder! Hands down, you are my FAVORITE "new" producer. You are definitely carrying the torch for all the legendary/timesless producers (E.g. Pete Rock, Premier, JayDee, Diamond D, etc.). I got a few questions:

1) What is the significance of musical interludes on albums? (I haven't heard musical interludes on albums as raw as THE LISTENING in a minute!)

2) Do you plan on ever relasing an instrumental album/cd like Pete Rock and Jay Dee?

3) When is Little Brother coming to the Chi?

4) How do you fel about NO I.D.'s production skills?

5) Are you slated to produce any cuts for Common?

6) Do you ever see yourself relocating? (A lot of cats relocate to NY to really take their careers to another level ; does LB ever consider that?)

and did Roy Lee ever learn how to use his Korg Tri-ton? I remember he had a boom and a bap..and just couldn't get it to go bip..

Keep doin' your thang, man. Peace and Blessings,

I heard some tracks from Murs 3:16 (9th Edition). Sounds sick. Are you familiar with the rest of the Legends? Will you work with The Grouch, Eligh, Scarub, or any other fools from his (murs')crew--or, from The Bay in general? (Del,Aceyalone?)

4850, Marketing Issue?
Posted by from_me_to_u, Thu Feb-26-04 04:00 PM
I completely bombed on the whole "9thmatic" concept and was lukewarm with the 'mass customization production' approach. Maybe my real mistake was neglecting the first rule in marketing; ask the client what their problem is.

I was wondering weather you can pose a marketing problem/situation to me that you are facing or know of. Then I'll use the little knowledge I have about marketing and the music industry and see if I can come up with some sort of solution. I'm sure you have big execs at WEA (Warner Atlantic) now to handle that sort of stuff, but hey, why not humour a kid. At the worse I flop and that's the end of that. At best case situation you get some free consulting or whatever my thoughts are worth.

If anything I thank you for at the very least acknowledging me and making me feel like I'm on the hip hop version of "the apprentice". I don't know too many artist who take the time to interact with their fans, so I'm glad I can thank you personally before you really "take off" and have some student intern reply to all your messageboard post and emails, hehe.

Hopefully one of my crazy ideas if not valid may inspire a more realistic and probable idea. I may not be able to do so now, but one day I'm going to have an idea which will change a industry. Which one, I don't know. But I have it in my gut. I will make a difference, or at least I hope so.

So I'm just going to keep pluggin away, learning from my errors and critics. Feel free to play Ceasar and give me a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" on my concepts or ideas. I'd like to think I get better with each of my losses and errors.

Thank you for your time and I value any feedback you can provide.

4853, Will Khrysis be in NYC this weekend?
Posted by MaineRapKingB, Thu Feb-26-04 06:50 PM
First is a comment... Basically I talked to Nature again today, he said that you (Ninth) only played ONE beat for him that hadn't already been gobbled up by somebody else, and it didnt fit him perfectly so he didnt cop it. He said all of the beats you played were fire, they were just all taken by others already.... u a popular dude.

Second... I told him he needed to buy beats from Khrysis and he was like ohhh shit I already have a bunch of his beats (I guess leftover from the NC trip) and he had forgotten who Khrys was... so we need to get him some of the latest and greatest beats... I was hoping Khrysis was gonna be in NYC this weekend. We'll be up in the studio on Saturday, I think NORE will be there too. Anyway when that 207 number calls answer, we will work something out. Not until after the 1 pm Wake/Maryland game tho... let us know!

(who is your fav college hoops team by the way?)
4854, RE: Will Khrysis be in NYC this weekend?
Posted by NinthWonder, Thu Feb-26-04 07:26 PM
Okay it went down like this......

Nature came down to NC and chilled at this cats house named Pauly Snubnose(whaddup Pauly). Anyways, prior to his arrival, I gave Pauly a beat cd with 11 beats on it. Nature sat on that beat cd for 2 days.....

I arrived at Pauly's crib 2 days later, and asked Nature about the beats. He said that they were dope, but he wasn't feeling any for him. I also MADE a beat for him RIGHT before I left to get up with him. Wasn't feeling that one. Anyways, I THEN went back out to my car to get another beat CD. I played some more beats for him, and found that they were mostly beats I sent to labels, but there was only 1 beat that I had available. He wasn't feeling that, the 11 beats I gave him first, nor the beat I cooked up that day.

THEN Khrysis played about 40 beats for him, and he wasn't feeling those, AND Khrysis gave him the CD's anyways....

that is what happened sir....

If cats don't feel my joints, that's cool, but I know I gave him a beat CD to listen to.....

inbox me sir........

4874, Jimi Hendrix?
Posted by from_me_to_u, Fri Feb-27-04 04:58 AM
I'm not a producer and therefore don't really know the whole thought process of selecting samples. Any how I was wondering if you heard of a song by Jimi Hendrix entitled "All Along The Watchtower".

I think it's one of the coldest songs ever made. I think it's pretty popular as well. Many newscasters, TV shows and movies use that song to encapsulate the feelings and uncertainty of the 60's. With that being said, I've never heard anyone touch that track to use as a sample. I think the lyrics in the song and guitar play is unreal. Everytime I hear it I get crazy amped.

Now i don't know if there would be any legal tanglements or high royalty cost. But would you ever consider using that track as a sample. Cause if someone did work with that track, I think it would be great.

Again your opinion and time is appreciated.

What up 9th? Just wanted to congratulate you and LB on your recent success. Most refreshing hip-hop I've heard in years. Keep up the good work.

My question is in regards to age in hip-hop. Do you think an aspiring MC or producer should stop pursuing his/her goal to make it in hip-hop if it hasn't happened by a certain age? If so, around what age would you hang it up? This is related, but if you can't answer it don't worry: How old were you when you started producing? How old are you now?

I also have seen that he has a link to LB's site up on his site. Is the work you did with him ever gonna be released? Do you know what hes doing now? Any plans to work with him in the future? I copped that EP/Single he dropped (Lessons from the Ghetto) from hiphopsite, but you weren't on it. Spectac is hot, and the stuff he made with you is by far the best. Nas Looks Back To 'Illmatic' With Reissue, DVD

Rapper Nas will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his landmark debut, "Illmatic," with a double-disc edition of the set. Due March 30 via Columbia, "Illmatic Platinum Series" features a remastered edition of the original album, a million-seller best known for the hits "It Ain't Hard To Tell," "One Love" and "The World Is Yours."

A second disc adds four new remixes: "Life's a Bitch," produced by Rockwilder; "The World Is Yours," produced by Vibesmen; and "It Ain't Hard To Tell" and "One Love," produced by Nick Fury. Also featured are the new studio cuts "On the Real" (produced by hip-hop legend Marley Marl) and "Star Wars" (produced by Large Professor).

The same day, Columbia will issue the DVD "Video Anthology Vol. 1," featuring clips for "Illmatic" favorites plus later tracks like "Hate Me Now" featuring Puff Daddy and "You Owe Me" featuring Destiny's Child and Ginuwine. Explicit versions of "Got Ur Self A..." and "Made You Look" are also included, as is audio commentary for every video.

Nas is working on a new album, "Street's Disciple." The double-disc set is expected to be released this summer.

I say you use that for an album/song title of the next project on deck which is currently untitled.

Posted by from_me_to_u, Mon Mar-01-04 01:15 PM
Is there a reason you haven't made your mixtape series availble to those sites?

Or better yet set up an individual site making all of them availble; like the Diplomats have (http://www.dipsetmixtapes.com/)

It would serve as a promotional vehicle as well as a revenue stream with higher margins then traditional major label music.

The legal entanglements of selling mixtapes can easily be avoided using the same loopholes both mixtapekings and mixunit employ (You pay for a $6 sticker and get the mixtape for free). That way you can avoid any backlash associated with making mixtapes for the retail.

Are you going to exit the mixtape industry or will there always be a need for it as a promotional tool or revenue stream independant of the major label?

What does a street team do?

I know they stick up posters in the city, drive a spray painted van and hand out flyers? But what else. I'm not knocking, I'm just curious.

Why does everyone praise Steven Rifkend?

I can understand there is some value in his concept, but at the same time I'm positive their are more effective means of promotion then the unfocused means Street teaming.

It's like Billboard or magazine advertising. We are inindated with so many ads and the only time sometihng like that is effective and permiates is when the idea/motivation is already planted in our subconsoius. So with that being said, the only true form of adversiting is identifying those consumers who already are predisposded to buy your product and inform them of it's availibility.

Direct marketing is the future. Steve Rikend and his street teams are good in small dosages, but they lose effectiveness once you try to project that outside of a local community.

Someone is going to put togther the new formula and when they do they trademark it just like Steve Rikend did 15 years ago with "Street Team"

That's just my opinion.

(sorry, I can't ever ask just one question, they always come in blocks).

So I like to fuck around with Fruity Loops, but the drums I have sound like shit. Where do you get drums that sound like actual drums and not techno-synthe-drums?!? I've tried everything, there must be something I'm missing.

I dunno if ur still taking questions or comments but just wanted to acknowledge you on the good quality of music you make and bringing a badly needed breath of fresh air to the game.

Anyways me and my partner did our own lil black album remix on my soundclick page, The Blacker Album. Check it out if you get a chance
