NEW YORK, NY – March 21, 2006 – On May 18th & 19th, Grammy Award-winning hip-hop band The Roots and their new label, Def Jam Recordings, will throw a two-night party at New York City’s historic Radio City Music Hall. Sponsored and presented by Verizon, and produced by Festival Productions, Okayplayer, and Radio City Entertainment, the shows will feature highlights and hits from The Roots extensive 7-album catalogue, as well as new material from its upcoming Def Jam debut release Game Theory, slated for a late-summer, early fall release.

Tickets for both shows go on sale at noon on Friday, March 24th at Ticketmaster and Ticketmaster.com, and the remaining tickets will be at Radio City’s box office and other local ticket outlets on Saturday, March 25th. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to benefit the family of the late, legendary hip-hop producer Jay Dee (J. Dilla).

Styled after The Roots’ wildly-successful pre-Grammy Jams at the Key Club in Los Angeles, ‘Verizon Presents The Roots With Special Guests’ will find the band joined onstage by a litany of superstars, each to perform mini-sets in a seamless, non-stop evening of music. Thursday, May 18th will feature sets with new labelmate Nas and frequent collaborators Common and Talib Kweli. Friday, May 19th will feature a diverse line-up including Erykah Badu, Mos Def, J. Davey, and Angelique Kidjo. There will be more guest performers announced for both nights as they are confirmed. And true to form, many other special unannounced guests can be expected.

“Our fans should pretty much know that our New York shows are the most special shows, simply because we have been known to pull some amazing rabbits out of our hat,” says The Roots’ drummer, band leader, and de-facto spokesman Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson. “Every show we've ever thrown in this city was a footnote and an exercise in surprise. good point. i wasn't there, how was it? from her singing in ny, i wasn't blown. as in, (solely off that one performance), i would not consider her the cherry on top of the roots/mos/erykah sunday. more like the nuts sprinkled on top. it looks nice and you're glad its there, but do you really taste it at all underneath all the rest? i know you love my metaphor.

Would it be stupid if i went both nights? are the lineups going to be that different? and is your (the roots) playlist going to be different for each night??

Couple of years ago the Roots did like 6 shows in a week here in NYC to promote their album...i was lucky enough to go to 3 of them, one of which was at Joe's Pub.......it's def. worth the trip to see them in NYC ......they always bring it. I also saw them at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center which is a minature Radio City and it was dope!! The acoustics were sick!!!

Amazingly, despite living in the northeast my entire life, I have never been inside Radio City. How big a venue is it? I think that the biggest (indoor) Roots show I've ever been to was probably at Hammerstein (numerous times). I imagine that this is much bigger.

is it me or Ticketmaster messing with me. I tried buying online and the first time there was a computer glitch so I lost my second row, it happened again and then I got pushed all the way back.

Did this happen to anyone else. I was cursing someone out on the phone, they said their system was temporarly down.

I just sold my tix to both shows on eBay (they went for just above face value). I know there are two for Friday's show up there now but the price is steep. Try Craigslist.com too.

There is orchestra pit seating available.. too bad it's GONE!

i got row bbb of orchestra pit for friday night which is in front of the regular orchestra seating and i believe is second row in front of the stage

Anyone have any idea how strict they're gonna be at radio city when it comes to cameras?? Will they trip if I bring my SLR and a decent lens in that bitch? If anyone has any idea...let me know.

For the Christmas Spectacular and other family events, 35mm and digital cameras will be permitted into the Music Hall, however, you must refrain from taking pictures during the performance. Taking photos during events is distracting not only to the performers, but your fellow patrons as well. Video cameras/recorders are strictly prohibited. This policy will be strictly enforced.

For concert events, this policy is at the discretion of the artist. Please call Guest Relations at 212-465-6225, any weekday during normal business hours, for more information.

And the lady I talked to said exactly what it said online and said that they hadn't gottenan official policy from the promoters yet. They will allow you to bring cameras inside because a lot of tourists carry them around with them anyway, but if the promoters say no, then you have to "check" them at the door and radio city isnt responsible, blah blah blah....

I really hope they allow cameras on this one... any updates from insiders would be greatly appreciated!

She told me I could take pictures of me and my friends and of the inside of radio city, but to be "respectful" during the show and not to snap off like a madman. Worst that can happen, she says, is they check my camera and hold onto it until I leave.
