43653, get em high
Posted by Troubled Spirits, Sun May-07-06 02:19 PM
get em high was in the movie... sans common verse though

and i doubt every single second of the concert will be on the dvd, but hopefully at least one or two more songs per artist will be included... im particularly interested in spaceship (which ?uesto hyped us up for, only for it to be omitted from the soundtrack last minute), and 2 words (which they teased the hell out of us with in the beginning of the movie)

43654, co-sign that shit

I'll withhold judgement though until I get my copy and I write the OKP review for it...

ive heard that the only "extra music acts" are extended versions of the ones featured in the movie. thats ultra weak IMO. almost all the performances in the movie are at full length. that really sucks that we wont get to see any NEW performances. im real disappointed, they better release a special edition with LOTs more in the near future to make up for this feature lacked version that was hyped up to contain many bonus'
43661, RE: ehhh
Posted by The1AndOnlyDJCT, Mon Jun-05-06 04:39 PM
God damn they are really milking us! Just release a huge box-set already!
43662, apparently not even all the songs in the film are extended.
Posted by HighVoltage, Mon Jun-05-06 05:42 PM
from what i have heard.

if this is true, i might as well just wait for the special edition, which is inevitable to be released eventually if this is the case.

i read that the "extra music acts", are like the ray "extended", where the symbol comes on the screen and you have to press the buton to see it after a slight pause

http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/dave-chappelles-block-party.html
43666, yeah...

and im saying ive heard that the symbol appears twice during the DVD.
43667, boo
Posted by budz4zo, Tue Jun-06-06 11:05 PM
such disappointing news.
who was in charge of this release?
why cant someone on the 'inside' just voice the opinion of all of okp?
there must be a special edition in the near future.
i guess this release is just to hold us over
because its going to take forever to master and edit all the performances.
hopefully a year down the line,
they will release a 4-disc platinum edition with footage of the whole concert
43668, doubtful
Posted by Troubled Spirits, Tue Jun-06-06 11:24 PM
unless this version of the DVD sells a cajillion copies and the demand is high enough for Universal to milk the title, then this will probably be the only version of the DVD...

Unless this pulls some shit like Chappelle Season 1 on DVD, b/c the movie went double wood in the box office

1 week in top 10 box office.

just over $11.695 million total.

not very good at all.

granted the production cost was a mere 3 million, once you factor in marketing and advertising cost and look at the big picture, a few million is not big revenue.
43671, RE: yeah it is.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Jun-11-06 02:49 PM
Most films make their profit in the DVD/VHS market. $11.5 Mil on a $3 Mil production budget, when you figure the marketing cost 2-3 times the production budget, Block Party already made or is close to making a profit.

Clerks, a film that made $3.1 Mil theatrically:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=clerks.htm

Was considered a huge hit because it cost $27,000 to make. This is a similar type thing. It didn't do blockbuster numbers, but it didn't need to. It certainly didn't go "double wood". I think it's remarkable this film was even released in as many theaters as it was with the acts it had.
43672, sigh
Posted by Troubled Spirits, Sun Jun-11-06 04:30 PM
Don't expect a special edition DVD any time soon, if ever... believe me.

The movie was in theatres no more than 5 weeks (a lot less in some smaller markets). From a business standpoint, Universal has absolutely no incentive to spend a shitload of money to release a balls-to-the-wall edition of this on DVD, knowing the film's small niche market. A niche matrket that will buy this on DVD whether it's barebones, or packed to the brim with extras.

Therefore, they took the easy way out. And we will still buy it, because we enjoyed it so much.
43673, are you really comparing this to clerks?
Posted by HighVoltage, Sun Jun-11-06 06:12 PM
clerks was such a cheap movie to make.... kevin smith maxing out credit card after credit card and going into debt just to get it filmed, lol.

but its success came after smith's cult following grew.

you cant possibly compare this to Block Party.

Dave Chappelle is already well establsihed, and if his name can barely break even, it was not a success.

it's not just extra music scenes though. it's extra scenes period. how much of that extra 8 mins is music? probably not much.
43676, The extra footage is as follows:
Posted by rhymesandammo, Wed Jun-07-06 01:15 PM
* Longer scene exploring the Broken Angel
* Extended preformance of "Boom!" without any interuptions

Yeah, that's it.
43677, RE: The extra footage is as follows:

what?!?!?!? thats so weak, words cant even begin to describe it
they might of well have given us nothing, cause thats practically what we got
43678, RE: The extra footage is as follows:
Posted by Troubled Spirits, Wed Jun-07-06 03:16 PM
Is that extra footage already inserted into the film, or is done through seemless branching (by clicking the megaphone that pops up)?
43679, RE: The extra footage is as follows:
Posted by rhymesandammo, Wed Jun-07-06 05:45 PM
The extra footage into the Broken Angel is seamless, but the extended Boom! preformance, you have to click the red megaphone.
43680, LOL
Posted by Troubled Spirits, Wed Jun-07-06 07:59 PM
LOL at them advertising "extended music acts", when their is only one fucking red megaphone in the whole thing.

When the specs were announced, I assumed the worst case scenario would be songs that weren't shown in their entirity ("Two Words", "Get Em High", "Definition", "You Got Me") would be shown.

This is just terrible though. Especially since both ?uest and Gondry have said in interviews that a shitload of bonus performances would be on the DVD.

43683, ^^^^ the truth, i've peeped the dvd already
Posted by LiquidSwords3000, Wed Jun-07-06 01:43 PM
(my roommate works at blockbuster)

it was only 1 disc, said unrated however
there wasn't anything different that i didn't
see in the theater version. it said there were
gonna be extended music scenes on the dvd but i
sware i didn't notice anything different there
either.

special features include a 30 minute
"making of block party" which was pretty
cool, shows them doing the conference call
with everybody on the line (erykah: ahmir,
are you gonna be bossing everybody around
the whole time?), and like a 10 minute thing
on all the people from ohio that dave brought
out to brooklyn.

but like someone said above, if they're releasing
a 2 disc version too, then that'll be good. cause
i was kinda underwhelmed by the version i saw.

So how long till the whole concert footage is bootlegged in its full length. We all know it only takes about a year for the fans to get annoyed at the labels for sleeping on stuff and then boom it is availabel to anyone with a modem. Someone had to record that while the show was going on.
43695, there were no tapers there.

yea right. no (fan) recorded it. they were really strict on bringing cameras in, and you could of snuck it in. but a camcorder would have been a little more difficult. plus, the entire thing was 8+ hours long. unless u got a few backup tapes and batteries, no one could have recorded the concert in its entirety. plus, if someone had recorded it, or there was a full version, it would have been leaked by now. only people involved in the production have access to all the footage. and if i recall correctly, even gondry's cameras stopped filming during the 20min freestyle at the end, so even they dont have the whole concert. i dont think we'll ever get to see the the full concert, at best we'll get a bunch more performances, but thats it. nowhere near the full show will ever be released.

43701, The Making Of ("September In Brooklyn") extra is pretty cool
Posted by CMcMurtry, Tue Jun-13-06 04:06 PM
Some highlights:

- Audio of the infamous conference call that Quest talked about. The funniest part was Badu asking "Ahmir, you gonna boss us around?!?"

- Kanye giving an entire interview while playing video games

- Big Daddy Kane demanding the camera pan on him when he was hugging a female fan so that people still know he "gets the job done"

- Consequence, when asked if it was important that Brooklyn was the host of the block party: "I'm from Queens. End quote."

>>>for some yoou'll be reading this post twice cause iposted on another thread<<<

I gotta admit, I'm totally disappointed. I could be very wrong in my assessment so lemme just ask. Was the material that hit the theaters altered for the dvd??? I ask that primarily because of my favorite performance. I went to see this joint in the theater THREE FREAKIN TIMES for You Got Me. …Never seen anything like that. Got the bootleg soundtrack (wish I’d gotten the bootleg movie to prove my point) that weekend and was blasting it. Got the soundtrack and was blasting telling myself and all my friends this shit was great. Telling all those that hadn’t seen it to go see it. Then yesterday I get off work, go get the shit and pop in the dvd player and I feel like it was chopped up again, as in it was a shorted version than what was in the theater. Yeah a couple a seconds of extra shit was added a la broken angel… Somebody please tell me I’m right cause I feel cheated over here. I keep on telling myself it was a documentary not a concert movie. Anybody understand my beef…
43720, well
Posted by Troubled Spirits, Wed Jun-14-06 11:59 AM
I haven't seen the DVD yet (should be getting it in the mail today), but I saw it twice in theatres.

"You Got Me", in the theatrical version, was just a tiny bit of Jill singing, then Black Thought's third verse, then Erykah and Jill singing together. All in all, maybe 3 mins tops of the song, compared to the 10 mins of it on the soundtrack.

Hope that helps.

That is correct. On the unrated version when you start the movie it gives you an option to have the unrated version with bonus scenes. Then when it watch it that way and when there are bonus scenes a camera shows up in the lower right of the screen. When that pops up you enter enter on the remote and it takes you to the bonus footage and when the bonus footage is complete it shows you the regular theatrical footage.

I'm hoping for some commentary, and MOST importantly, additional performance footage (the more the better). The theatrical version was great, but like many here on the OKP boards, I went home wishing I'd gotten to see more of the concert. Hopefully this special edition will come through in that regard!
43743, Based on his comments on the DVD, "I have true disdain for Kanye West"
Posted by ShortQueen80, Fri Jun-16-06 11:12 PM
I seemed so lax, disinterested, and arrogant when talking about the concert during the DVD. I can't want for his reign of terror to be over, so he can see how uncaring the regular hip hop audience is. Unlike Kanye, the Roots have a cult following and these people appreciate and absorb every piece of material people like Common and Talib produce.

I know they are on G.O.O.D Music and I love and want good things for Common and John Legend but this fool has to be stopped.
43744, eh

If it wasn't for Kanye, "Be" would have sold nothing, and Kweli would be even less famous than he currently is.

43745, Kanye can produce all he wants but his celebrity increased

once he started rapping. I can't lie the dude can produce but I don't want to hear anything with his voice.
