43405, The ORIGINAL plan
Posted by 15, Sat May-20-06 07:15 PM
ok y'all wanted me to snitch so i kinda will

this was the plan

if you ask "well why didn't such and such do blah blah blah?" the TARDY irked me more than the ABSENT.

i mean once one piece falls outta place then the whole game was "what to do next!?!?" some cats weren't coming so then i'd adjust...only to be told "they are coming!" two songs later---so then i leave well enough alone.....then 15 minutes later "ok they are gonna come" then...."nevermind they aint coming"

wtf?!!

meanwhile its like: "where is blaahhahha?" oh they stuck on the west side highway" so then i gotta switch order and put the stronger act on beforehand making the tardy's cameo anti climatic.

so this aint about snitchin this is about what my plan was

1. 8:00-Dave Chapelle
2. 8:05-Intro/Web
3. 8:10-Here I Come (with Dice Raw)
4. 8:15-Thought@Work (Drum Duel with Frank and Ahmir- Transition to NAS)
5. 8:20-Made You Look
6. 8:25-It Ain’t Hard To Tell (Original and Remixed Version)
7. 8:30-The World Is Yours (Pete Rock To Sing The Hook//2nd Verse Remix)
8. 8:35-If I Ruled The World (Jeff Intro)
9. 8:40- In Love With The Mic (skillz and truck north)
10 8:45-Stay Cool
11 8:50- Don’t Say Nothin
12 8:55- Boom (Wrath Of Kane)
13 9:00- Set It Off (Riq Does Second Verse)
14 9:05- Raw
15 9:10- Warm It Up Kane
16 9:15- Chapelle Break five minutes
17 9:20-Proceed/Bizness
18 9:25- Go-common
19 9:30- Corners-common
20 9:35-The Food-common
21 9:40-Get Em High-Common Talib and Kanye
22 9:45-Get By-Kweli and Kanye
22 9:50-Definition-kweli and mos
23 9:55-The Blast-kweli and erykah
24 10:00The Light/Common (Bilal Singing?)
25 10:05I Used To Love Her-common
26 10:10Act Too Love Of My Life-common
27 10:15Criminology/Back Like That/Ice Cream-ghostface and rae
28 10:20Verbal Intercourse-ghost rae and nas
29 10:25Indy500-Ghost/Rae
30 10:30 Chez Chez LA ghost-erykah?
31 10:35 Don’t Feel Right-roots
32 10:40 The Next Movement-roots
33 10:45 Rahzel-roots
37 10:50Dave Says Goodbye

The only fallout from friday was Maxwell was supposed to do "Don't Ever Wonder" when we do "What You Want"
43406, Snitch some more.....
Posted by handle, Sat May-20-06 07:23 PM
...as to why people didn't come?

Death in the family?? Absent minded? Smoking crack??

Do tell :)
43407, well
Posted by 15, Sun May-21-06 02:01 PM
its not even a finger pointing thing.
but because the roots are a unit in which live performance is uber crucial
the mode of operation is a lil different then what artist go though.

like for instance.

you SHOULD always be at the venue 90 mins before the start of the show.

why? some shit could go down and you need time to regroup.
we stress this but its like when you ask for favors you are kinda at
the mercy of the one granting the favor (and on the real shawn gee killed this
theory by paying our guests only because we thought we could avoid that whole
"they got us hostage" type thing) but on the real? when you ask for favors you are
at the mercy of the person you are asking.
so you can beg "please be there at 7" (an hour before stage) but if said person knows they
coming on at 9ish...its the passive aggressive "what is my motivation?" thing going on.

the motivation is that classic hip hop is in an endangered species state and "rappers are in danger" so i wanted to craft a night that would hopefully spark some sort of fire (form a team with my new def jam family---ghost, nas, kanye, hov...---and maybe we could all move as a team. but the thing is kan and hov are gods in their own right so really its like okay i need them more then they need me---but i STILL think its a circle jerk and even though it was a favor i know that 4 min cameo hov did filled his gas tank up a lil something (ie he benefitted too) just as it did ours.

there were actually more invites than that (some gave a "no" some days beforehand) but some of those cats don't seem to realize the significance of doing this night would benefit them.

i dont think ANY success you see in music ever occurs unless it is connected to a movement: (soulquarians, wu family, the roc, bad boy camp, the houston crew, death row)

i think we ALL coulda benefitted. i mean shit may be cool for cats now....but i KNOW i am the ONLY cat gonna wonder what will my career be into come 2011 when im 40.

so i hope i gave some insight. im sure imma catch beef with some of the name dropping from the watchdogs of the artists i said. but shit wasnt even said in a mean tone.

its just i feel like god told me to build an arc because a tsunami is about to hit us and mofos think shit is sweet.

lets see what's up in 2009.
43408, so you had all those artists penciled in..
Posted by NazDak, Sun May-21-06 10:34 PM
wait i'll rephrase...
all those HIPHOP artists penciled in, with no backup plan?

You have to have known that half them cats werent showing up, rite? At least on time, anyway.

I missed both shows, but I was hoping that what I would hear about the shows were something along the lines of "wow the roots killed it and then they brought out Jay and Nas together blah blah blah"

Sometimes less is more dog. Keep a roots show a roots show. Bump all that mixtape stuff.

But hey what do i know.

yup. he expected professionals to act like it. like he does when they call on him.

> You have to have known that half them cats werent showing up,
>rite? At least on time, anyway.

he probably thought about it, no doubt. he's been there before.

little, unless you've got 15 or so years in a live hip hop band.

It was still a great show. Now you Just know who you can't and can depend on. Did everybody show up for the Friday show? Or were people missing in action there?
43415, thanks
Posted by wally, Sat May-20-06 07:25 PM
thank you.

damn, nas coming back out with rae & ghost would have been insane.
ghost & badu would have been crazy too.
in my mind, kanye was the most predictable absence.

thanks again for the insight.

i was HAAAAAARD on everyone about that.

i mean you know how foolish maimona felt saying an hour straight

"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."
"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."
"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."
"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."

"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."
"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."
"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."
"i dont wanna love him.....BUT WHAT IF HE.."

OVER AND OVER AND OVER?

shit was like kill bill vol two and i was the master teacher making her go through that shit until she said it right.

i really regret the time i wasted making them play rza fucked up til that shit sounded just like the record.

that photo on the update was taken as nas was rehearsing his part.

i just knew that niggas was gonna bust nuts on us all night when we went into that shit.

so my lesson?

i MUST have a plan C.

this is the first and LAST time i will ever get caught with my pants down.
43418, A plan is a list of things that never happen (c) my boy
Posted by DJ Contact, Mon May-22-06 07:25 PM
People still loved the show from what im seein, so although it aint end up on the level that you wanted it on you can take somethin away from that I guess.

For the record, I don't think Verbal Intercourse has ever been done live....I don't even think The Bizness has been done live before, cuz when Com and De La went on tour together last summer they didn't do it, at least not here (Milwaukee).

We always get the short end of the stick show wise tho, so that might just be location more than set list.

i'm truly glad that everything went 99% on point last night, cuz that is a lot of people to let you down on a should-have-been-hallmark night of your and the band's career. plus i'm just mad for myself that i didn't get to see the set as planned. still thursday was the concert of my life regardless.

congrats on the whole 2 nights yo.

i knew night one was gonna KILL night two.

jay insisted on doing night one....
but i BEGGED him to do night two
cause i was like "this is my weakest night" and
i need an adrenaline pump.
he still insisted night one then i hit him with one two punch

i said you know when ye does "get em high" they gonna go crazy
then when erykah hits "tommy mattola..." they going apeshit
it could be overkill when you get it.

then i told him about doing "encore" with the brass band and how
he would be the only PUMP on night two...then he gave in.

but yeah hov was a night one guy and i was AFRAID cause i knew that
night two couldn't hold a candle to night one.

whew?
43426, everything happens for a reason
Posted by HighVoltage, Sun May-21-06 02:32 PM
its funny how night 1 was supposed to shit on night 2.... and the result was visa versa.

I think a lot of the artists took the night for granted... not fully realizing the impact of playing at RCMH. Like when Mos came out, he was like "damn man, i took this for granted thinkin it was just another show.. this is wild!" Not to mention how it woulda helped THEM, not just you.

But like i said earlier, whats done is done. it was still a success.
43427, Honestly

uhhhh, how about we make them both equally hot next time.?

I know ish happened night one, but for real man, I feel cheated, yes, I know Nas, Kane, Comm, Kweli were there, but the show staggered along, and the overriding thought of "I wonder who they're going to blow the crowd away with?" kind of stunted the whole night...

and to know that night 2 blew night one away irks my to the tenth power...

43444, not artless fault
Posted by 15, Sun May-21-06 02:28 PM
this is my analogy:

i drive a scion.
that shit is the MOST comfortable ride ever.
space.
compact
i can duck and bob and weave
do 100 and no po po on my ass
i know that shit like the back of my hand.
it will take a MIGHTY fine replacement to make me switch.

so we been on a scion (as far as the board we use and etc)

then we got an idea....

"since this night is so damn special....why dont we get a BENTLEY!!!!"

a stick at that.

so sight unseen we got the ULTIMATE soundboard and speaker system.

now with the constraints on the venue

(you get 5 hours to SET UP--and a show this big takes about 3 hours just to set up....not even SOUNDCHECK...that means set jeff's turntables, set the lights, my drums, the speakers....and if you go ONE SECOND past shut off time 6:00pm dinner break they charge you $5,000 bucks. rcmh got the HARDEST union rules. its not even like "you must stop playing at 6pm" it is "YOU MUST LEAVE AND NOT COME BACK AT 5:55" remember when the carter got busted in new jack city? and the alarms were going off? at 5:50 four people come in with bullhorns. and they annoy the fuck out of you:

"PEOPLE YOU HAVE 9 MINUTES TO CLEAR THE AREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"PEOPLE YOU HAVE 3 MINUTES TO CLEAR THE AREA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

on night two i left my cell phone on the floor tom and told my drum tech to get it and the nazi timekeeper said you have 1 minute and 30 seconds or we will be charged.

he ran on some mcguyver shit.

so because we are the ONLY standard of a band that plays "hip hop" (in other words with bob dylan you just turn the volume up and check the levels do a half hour worth of tunes and you cool....with us we got to adjust to the room.

on the real we need 3 hours just so that the drums can bang.

so it wasnt his fault.

next time we get a night this big.

we need to just "treat it like its boston" do what we used to on the equipment we ALWAYS use.
43445, RE: not artless fault
Posted by LANSTARR, Sun May-21-06 08:41 PM

Last night's show was sick. Get off work in Jax, drive to Tallahassee to pick up girl, to Orlando. Great time before the show with the dj although the dancers kinda killed the vibe when they came and did some nsync dancin.

Jean Grae-damn, had no idea. Tomorrow's do list: new tires and buy her cd.

Ya'll seemed to be having fun up there and I know we all were. Great crowd. Ya'll keep getting better and better. After 18 shows spread over 10 years and 6 states I think this was the best I seen ya'll. On an off night you amaze people. On a good night those people will never miss another show. And I was dude Thought pointed at when it came time for the soul clap, ha ha. Only downside on the show. Getting boxed out by dude in an Iverson jersey with bacne. Thank ya'll. I might see ya tomorrow in ATL.

I don't know if Mos was supposed to be there, but I hope he got there on time for the Friday show. I was just coming out of the Micheal K. store on Broadway in SoHo at around 7:30 on Friday, and Mos pulls up being driven in a black suburban. Jumps out the ride, runs in to a store, runs across the street into Lady Foot Locker, and jumps back in the whip and off he went. He looked like he was in a crazy rush.

what venues out west would you like to rock moreso than others?

because honestly, the fillmore is the best one, but you could fill that up in a second (and already have)?

43470, west coast artists would probably be more likely to show
Posted by violence, Mon May-22-06 05:07 PM
for some reason, i see a guy like snoop being more professional than the wu cats, maybe b/c he's done movies and understands discipline and being a team player.

that said, you'd probably be able to pull off some NICE west coast cameos.

imagine...

nate/snoop/dogg pound vintage death row mini-set
cube doing AMW classics
pharcyde reunion (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) perhaps w/a special dilla tribute? (runnin, etc)

you could REALLY turn it out...

That is the type of shit that I would come up with if I were planning some kinda "my dream concert" scenario. The thing you never in a million years think will happen, but you can still picture it so clear, playing out the show in your head. It's kinda crazy that it even came *that* close to realization, because if I were to read that set-list on paper, I wouldn't think it more than some ambitious fan's pipe dream. But I guess that's what it turned out being . . .

the "old school of the school" (biz can we get some?)

i pretty much thought that when the roots call out most of the cats we called
would respond on some "the roots are prestige" shit.

this is the first time this ever occurred in my 14 years as a signed artist (i love that i am in double digits) so...now i know.

i mean we got through to nas.
so all aint lost.
i mean you have to understand that
cats were afraid of us or standing next to
us like the gay son to the alpha dad at the
family reunion back in the day.
because we outlasted most of them they kinda gotta
respect us...or at least acknowledge that we must be doing
something right to STILL have a career in 2006--14 years after 1992.

i mean you shoulda seen nas' face watching rahzel do "jesus walks" at soundcheck.

i mean he had SO many questions. like REAL regrets on some "damn i was so wrong about yall" shit. i mean the look on face when he heard us do extra p's remix of "aint hard to tell" was like the BEST feeling ever. and when we hit "the world is yours" remix? god i KNOW that shit touched him. and he said something like "yall made my remixes sound like a work of art...just to hear that stuff analyzed and played by musicians...man...wow."

far cry from the guy who at electric lady thought i was the pizza delivery guy from waverly diner back in 2000 (i had braids....well i hope that is what threw him off...but you never know...i mean i LOVE mf doom...but if he rolled up on me without that mask...would i know him?)

but yeah back to soundcheck his boy (nas) was like "how in the hell are you NOT on the roots?!?!? it took you THIS long to find out this is how they do?"

he shrugged but he sheepishly admitted like...damn...these "niggas was real".

ghosts' whole approach was the same: he scoffed at the idea of soundchecking and rehersing kinda like that school bully who punked mike on good times responded when michael admitted that he had no secret to being a straight A student. he said all he did was do homework and studying.

ghost said "well i thought id just showup and bust a verse since all yall do is just freestyle and jam"

well i was insulted because that insinuated that i dont prepare my show, and then i was insulted that he cant even take the time to get to know niggas to see that "man...they got it real cool".

sheesh even the fishscale shit!!!! i made jay about 4 copies of dilla's motown shits for ghost to choose for the album before he even bothered to listen to em! i KNEW that ghost was the only cat to give the motown beats justice and i told jay that shit and BEGGED him to please give this to ghost's camp. i shocked as fuck he chose 3 joints (heard he did 6, so that shows he liked it once he tried it) i also insisted that he holler at breakestra cause i thought a band of that level would be PERFECT for ghost to go to that next level.

i bet he never opened that cd.

so i guess its like switching meat for some veggie stuff in which you scoff at the idea....but then you eat it and are shocked you like the near chicken/tufurkey as much os the real shit.

its taking cats near 20 years to realize that we aren't "that bad"

as far as mos and dave. we did the "hug it out" thing the next night. to dave's credit because it wasn't music related i guess i never spoke and told him what i wanted. i just assumed he could "turn it on" at a snap...so he was unprepared for anything on thursday. i just thought the managers expressed what i wanted and he was hit at the last minute so i couldn't be mad. i was just mad because i needed some stall time for about 10 minutes to figure out what to do and with a minute left in hub's solo dave was like "i just cant go out there and be funny!! i gotta think!!!" so i told rahzel and jeff "think of something!!!!!"

mos just dosn't believe in a phone so i was happy he came at all cause he never came to rehersal.
43492, goddamn, mos did that with no rehearsal @ all?

that was "Standard Fare"--the plan for that show (okay i guess i can say) was really with tara and jesse in mind (i was told they copped two tix for both nights) so since they were the OVs (original vets) from the bowery show of 99, i was tryna think how in the hell could i make them feel like they got their 300 worth.

i think thats the essence of how we felt walking out. i took my sis, so as a newjack she was floored by thursday night. but the rest of us were scratching our heads, unsure about how to feel about it. after reading all the blogs/posts on your intent, its clear you were trying to coordinate possibly the biggest show you've done, which mutated for a number of reasons into thursday night. i feel much better about the whole thing that i did initially.....and in retrospect, if i could choose the thurs or fri, i'd still choose the thurs. in a strange way, great to see you guys under pressure in the hot seat and be there for an infamous/notorious show.

that's all I know...I mean, you can only control so much, especially in a situation like that.
But as someone in the crowd at Friday's show, everyone was captivated...from the regular Roots show types to the newbies...it was electric man.
Seeing Slum Village was extra dope to me, and kept Dilla in the back of my mind the whole time like "he would be proud to see this"
Dave did what he always does...taught everybody a valuable lesson and they didn't even realize cuz they were laughing the whole time.
Jeff's solo had me going nuts personally.
The horns were nice.
I also thought the sequencing went really well with who you brought on stage and what songs you guys did to fill in...Black Thought kept things moving pretty well as an MC.

and like someone said before...I must admit I've always been somewhat of a hater when it came to Hov, but he came out and just tore the roof off...had me throwing up a diamond sign and shit, looking silly...I didn't give a fuck, it was a live show...and if Hov ever does want to come back on tour, he should leave his DJ and crew at home and just bring yall...shit, most rappers should really.

i think that show inspired a lot of folks who witnessed

I danced like I never danced before, had the BEST strawberry daquari EVER from the bar @ RCMH, and got to look Kweli in the eye, while singing my off key version of "Brownskin Lady" (Kweli just looked right past me like I was a fucking ghost....almost hurt my feelings but I was at a Roots show so nothing could stop my HIGH)

The only beef I have w/ you Quest is the knowledge now that you TALKED JAY Z OUT OF BEING AT THE FIRST SHOW....THE SHOW THAT I ATTENDED.....*shakes fist at the computer*....you were convinced that the 1st show was gonna be the better show.....sounds like the 2nd one was the show stopper! Wish I made more money, then I coulda seen both shows, but I doubt I coulda handled that much excitment. Two nights of concerts is like whoa.....

Nas and Jay Z on stage doing Dead Presidents, OMG I woulda pissed myself!

I just love this band....I'm there at the next show in my area and I'm bringing all my folks, who are now intrigued by the group since I had to travel from DC to NY to see you!

I have been a Roots fan ever since I was a freshman in high school. Five years later I see my first Roots show @ RCMH on 5/18. Even though some people bailed and the sound sucked at times,I enjoyed the the hell out of the show. Now being as a brought two of my white friends to the show, who are head over heels about rock, they said it was one of the best shows they've seen. Just seeing The Roots with NAS! was enough for me. (Even though my friends knew ever word of Common's set except for the freestyle) I would hope that you come back to either Philly, New York, or New Jersey very soon. BTW is it possible for an albino black man to grow a fro like yours?

NY wasn't ready for J'davey, they had the stage jumpin the whole time they was up there and people were lunchin'.

Props to The Roots w/ the marching band, Great Beginning. I saw it at the kimmel center too, but you can't get enough. Slum Village was a surprise. I got really hype when they did 'raise it up', the beat started and here they come running out the stage. Im not gonna lie either, i started looking for Jay Dee when it came on. I love his verse on that song, they all did it and it had that effect like wow.

Angelique Kidjo definitely had me dancing to the drums, she was strong with hers. You couldn't just sit there (you had to dance, sing along or something), at least i couldnt just sit there.

The Roots of course did there thing, the next movement, love of my life, the mic, you got me (i likes this version), hip hop 101, Double Fucking Trouble with Mos Def.

Mos Def, man what can i tell you about dude. He seemed overwhelmed, when he saw the crowd but he did his thing. Double Trouble, Umi Says, The Intro on the New Danger Album, Universal Magnetic, Ms Fat Booty. It was a pleasure to see dude rocking the house.

Slum Village also did Selfish, w Mos Def contributing to the hook. And Fall In Love, might i add was So lovely to hear live

Dave Chapelle describing how he dodged Oprah's questions like the Matrix had me dying and of course his reasons of why he left the show and why how he wants us all to "Never Leave Him" was also hilarious. You know what he came at a perfect time because I haven't sat down yet since The Roots started marching down the aisle

Another surprise, Bilal, He always does his thing and he was a great addition to the show. Sometimes and the Radiohead cover, btw He blew that shit away, all good.

Erykah, Erykah, what can i tell you. Sexy as usual. Block on lock, the glock's on cock and you KNOW that you got me, what a combination.

J'Davey, shorty in them little ass shorts, *Two Thumbs Up*. I saw her walking up the aisle with another okp (FE), I was ready to snatch her ass up. but naw, I like her performance, well their performance, i keep forgeting about dude on the keyboard. If i wasn't so tired already (mind you the show just started not too long ago), I would have been jumping the whole time she was on. She is... whats the word... Lively. Why didn't they do "NO MORE", i was kinda sad about that but i couldn't complain.

My name is Hov, H to Oh Vee, Yes I surprised to see Mr presidente in the show but like fwmj said, I was quite upset that the crowd didn't go as apenuts for everybody else. but i could understand, because nobody expected him to come out. I thought kamal was just doing his solo thing, he started playing 'PSA' and im like 'yeah kamal, whatever nigga, yeah i know you can play, so what' then BT comes out on some 'ole i would like to introduce to you our next guest' with the song is still on, when i saw dude in the hoodie, it was a wrap, I knew who it was but i couldn't believe til he said those first lines. Damn.

Dj Jazzy "there it is!!(C) Run-DMC" Jeff, brought me back when he did his solo. I was drunk too, (I had one big cup of thug passion the whole night), and when that beat came on, I was loose. Them speakers had me in a trance.

Also ?uest drums was feeling extra Boomish, too. Looks like he was having fun, especially when J'Davey was on, It looked as if he was beating his drums with his head.

The Misc: Hub's solo, The horns on the side, Knuckles, Cpt. Kirk showing what he does best.

Awesome Show. ####

And the band rocked them joints.

'Twas a great show. And so was the Questo DJ afterset @ 40/40 (even it it was straight packed like sardines in that bitch).

Definitely worth the airfare from Chicago and the $$$$ dropped. The Roots @ RCMH was definitely the highlight of my first-ever trip to NYC (that...and being in Harlem on 125th street on 5/19 hearing Mister C on the radio blending Malcolm X speeches with PE and Arrested Development and seeing all the stores close from 1 to 3 pm in honor of Malcolm's born day).

43537, Yeah I thought Jack and Brook ripped it...
Posted by engineegro, Mon May-22-06 12:50 PM
I was the only one in my row standing and only one who knew the songs but I didn't care. Jack has such a stage presence, had mad energy, and a great voice. J*Davey is definitely the truth, cats will catch up sooner or later.

J Davey -

They had presence, but to me the music borrowed to heavily from Prince to be amazing.

Not that prince is a bad artist to take inspiration from, but more like I was not feeling as much originality as much as I would like.

dre 3000 gets a pass?

people wern't feeling j'davey because they are NOT celebrities.

i hate to call a spade a spade. but that is the bottom line.

and i am NOT using okayplayers favorite "D/r" word but....

the name of the game is "fame" and "tricks" and "celebrity'.

even these misguided "critics" panned us for not being celebrities.

i love hov and all...but after soloing his vocals from friday? i DARE any motherfucka to come up in my face with any shit about tariq.

tariq projects better than ANY mc in his field.
tariq has THE BEST breath control.

this is where critics have a problem with us.

the whole "engaging" shit. ala "dance for your supper" trick. com does this well. i mean to each his own....com is ALLLLLLL over the place, its a wonder he can rap and breathe. but all of that ENERGY!!! it makes rash all that much more engaging. you want him to WIN. and you know...he is working on his "play nice" schitick" but riq hates the idea of "tapdancing". i mean he wasn't EVER about the "let me please you" stance EVER in his career.

(well if that is the case ahmir, you can't complain and whine then)

but i don't complain and whine. i just observe.

this cat from the voice all but calls Nas' appearance a miracle. but yet and still ignores the facts that make people interested in nas:

his @@@@@ endorsement from the source when it was credible.
his riding the fugees magic carpet ride to hit glory
his contender for the nyc crown
his beef with jay z
his SURVIVING that beef with jigga (don't believe me? how many of you copped the new mobb? now how many of you own "the infamous"? see?)

you can't just dismiss all that when judging an artist.

i mean sure an artist should be judged on talent alone. but this is 2006 and mofos don't play that way. its a wonder that i still have a good job.

his legend, his endorsement, and his life outside of his art makes people interested in nas.

but other than that? he didn't project all that well nor did he remember the lyrics from said classics.

but he is a celeb so long live the king.

to me my favorite moment was bilal. but people sat through that because they didn't know bilal and he is not famous.

friday wasn't all THAT special come to think of it:

if dave and hov and erykah never showed up then i think it woulda gotten panned just the same.

i chose to endorse j'davey the same reason why i endorsed erykah, and cody, and mos, and jill, and bilal, PPP, LB, and slum before they had deals simply because based on the talent they offered on the table i believed in what they were doing.

like its so easy to endorse gnarles now that they got the initial euro success. their new york party pulled more celebs than my night. (damn hov...you couldn't take the mrs to her first roots show? i gotta play dressup to draw bees to honey?)

the answer is yes.

its that way here.

and its that way there.

again.

tricks
smoke
mirrors
and celebrity.

we (the roots) are on a thin line.---

hope im around next year.
43540, i agree with that post
Posted by budz4zo, Sat May-27-06 08:36 PM
or most of it for that matter. not sure i followed it entirely but i think i got the point.

anyway, as much as i highly enjoyed the guest appearances of dave and hov.
dave being funny as fuck, and hov being a "god" these days.
and i enjoyed seeing nas, although i couldnt hear him too clearly
and if i didnt know the lyrics, prob wouldnt understand a thing
but these cats, although put out great albums, cant perform the BEST
they may perform good, and hov does perform pretty good
but black thought just KNOWS how to perform, how to ROCK a crowd
and he doesnt need to dance, doesnt need the celebrity status
he just knows when to step in, knows his lyrics like the back of his hand
and can spit his shit so clearly and so well, that it sounds great

personally,
i enjoyed the roots' sections the most, but since ive seen u guys a million times,
i loved seeing the special appearances and the combination of artists perform

other acts, like quest said, gnarls barkley are just hot right now
and HOV, well, like i said is a "god" these days, so people go wild just at the sight of him
celebrities, money, and sales all drive off of whats hot at the time
people follow whats popular and celebrities draw attention

but the roots have just been doin there thang so good for so long
if mad celebrities were all about the roots, people would be going crazy over them
and turn the roots into celebrities themselves
selling out MSG multiple nights and going platinum in a blink of an eye

but i really think that,
the roots come off the best out of anyone in the game,
and black thought is definitely the best performance MC
maybe its because u guys tour year round and he is just THAT good from experience
but,
he really is sick, breath control, clarity and all

how long u guys been touring yearround? 10 years straight?

also, i really dont mind, i actually really like the fact that tariq doesnt dance around the stage
he just lets yall do ur thing and spits his lyrics clearly and efficiently
he adlibs in good spots, can sing at times, he just puts on a great fucking show

thats one of the main reasons i like the roots so much
is that u put on one hell of a fucking show
i love how BT can just project his voice, control his breath, know his lyrics, and spit them correctly
shit just amazes me, and even if ive seen the same show before
im still entertained because its so fucking good.

i understand common finds the need to dance
and kweli has some compulsive disorder w/ swinging his right arm (lol)
but its not necessary for black thought to do all that
maybe its cause he has a supporting band to draw eyes and attention off of
but the combination of the roots 'band' and black thought is just perfect
u got a sick fucking band plus the best performing hiphop mc,
and it equals the best live hiphop act in the world
bottom line.

i dont even know where to go with this post
if it even remotely relates to what quest was talking about
or even what i began to talk about
but thats why i love the roots
they are a fucking sick live band
with an amazingly talented MC,
who put out great albums
and perform them even better

the roots are the SHIT. period.
43541, So do you feel the need to be THE celebrity of the group?
Posted by philliPINO, Sun May-28-06 12:49 AM
If there is one person with "celebrity" status in this group it would have to be you (see sharing a phone booth with Madonna). Having just mentioned that one of the names of the games is celebrity do you feel the need to take that role because it comes naturally or because its part of the game or both.

I don't know how in the fuck you can keep all of this shit straight. Seems like your job is 10% music, 90% hustle/logistics/bidness and when you hit the stage Friday it seemed like none of the drama that encapsulated the Thursday show and all of the shit that you had to do to make this event come off affected you once you banged the marching bass drum.

Sheeit, I've had gigs afterwork and I can't shake the disagreement I had with wifey until the second set (or the second Jack Daniels shot lol). The band was tight, the sound was on point for most of the night and all the performances were inspired. All of it was driven by your drums. The snare was hitting HARD nigga, and the kick was full and fat.

You rep hard for the band, keep the side projects going (great "'71 to '06" set @ 40/40 btw), blog and run OKP...and you never let the quality of the music slip. I just read about Thursday's drama today and I couldn't tell if you or any of the people onstage Friday were affected by anything other than the love in the room.

I was glad to be in the building.

that's an ill line-up ... but for real, even with the best-laid plans going awry, I STILL gigged and was mesmerized by the experience of witnessing Hip Hop music taking over over Radio City Music Hall! As far as the artists who didn't show up - it's THEIR loss - they missed a golden opportunity to be a part of history.
Maxwell?? that's my MAN, too, but he might be crazy for not showing ... then again, that may have been a good thing for me ... security might have had to put me out for bum rushing the stage.

Mr.Love hit upon something in this thread..

Since I saw first saw this band (Knitting Factory in 96..damn I'm old), I've been coming back for more (and more, and more).. Mostly for the enjoyment of the show, but also largely because I don't want THAT SHOW to be THE ONE i missed out on.. The one people are talking about for years.. "MAN DON'T YOU REMEMBER WHEN KANE AND RAKIM CAME ON STAGE ON A SLIP N' SIDE AND DID PAID IN FULL AND AIN'T NO HALF STEPPIN'? THAT WAS CRAZY MAN!"

Attention is paid to detail, and it is appreciated...

For future reference, though...

If it's a choice between "no Ghost", and Ghost coming out with Raekwon reading spoken word poetry over the VI beat because they missed rehearsals : 100 times out of 100 I'll choose the latter.

I am glad to read this post. Thursday night I was a little salty. well a little let down. for $80 i couldn't afford to go both nights. looking at the lineup I figured my best bet for the all star show was thursday night, and since nas and kweli and com were on the bill i figured it would have been a show for the "heads".

meaning instead of break you off we would have got 100% dundee or the lesson part 1. or some of the songs you haven't played in a while.

aside from the sound being off with the microphones for a bit of the show, the show was alright. but it was a show i've seen countless times before. minus the jesus walks bit, i've seen rahzel do that shai routine since like 1998 at least.

i wanted to you guys to pull out more of the hits. and i was really expecting some more all star appearances, and now i see you were too.

i feel like i'm even more old school veteran than 99 bowery ballroom. i booked you guys in right after do you want more came out to play up at wesleyan thanks to santi putting me in contact with nou, and i almost got sent before the student judiciary board because y'all kept playing even after the lights went on.

i've seen you at the maritime in san fran, irving plaza, summerstage, bowery, mercury lounge whatever.

so on thursday i was mad. the show was alright, but i felt like all the hype surrounding it which made me go out and get tickets was a let down. i mean it had it's momments, when kane came out, when made you look started, it was electric, but i felt like you of all people had the opportunity to make a legendary evening happen and it didn't. and maybe that's my own expectations. i went into it assuming you guys were gonna pull off the run dmc madison square garden of our time. or at least pull off a better version of the live on martin moore show. and it just wasn't that.

the end. it's long. i'm sorry.

43551, Thanks

STILL FEELING THE nrg FROM nyc!
Hey ?uest,
I’m not sure if you are still checking up on the replies, but I would like to say that you underestimate yourself and you did, in fact, put on quite the show last week at RCMH. Seeing that I was blessed enough to be there for both performances, I can say I am proud to have been a part of history and welcomed hip-hop to the venue with open arms.

I have always loved hip-hop (like Common, we were introduced when I was about 10), but I can say that our relationship was consummated last week and I’ve been impregnated by something that will continue to grow. Unlike so many of the heads around me, I may not have known all the lyrics word for word, but I recognize good beats and celebrate talent and my GAWD – it was thick within those walls. I have so much respect for you (even more than before) because of your ambition and the time that went into planning such a show. Shoot, people just show up for a few hours, but this has been something you’ve planned for years. Damn, do your thing, Ahmir.

I bumped into you at the after-hours, as you walked to that crazy fun house bathroom and I believe I said something inaudible and no doubt, nerdy, (and I appreciate you acknowledging me) but I wish I had been to a computer that day and seen you gettin down on yourself because I would have told you not to undermine the power you created. I was lucky enough to be 11 rows back and throughout the show I kept turning around and looking at the rows behind me and the THOUSANDS of people in the sold out (!) venue and wishing I could bottle up this energy and keep it for future times. Unbelievable.

(BTW, stellar job on the turn tables. I really enjoyed the chronological trip throughout music – Motown? Funk? You mean DJs can play other songs besides ones that include whispering and the words “laffy taffy”???).

Anyways, I would have not changed a thing last week (except for maybe Skillz being heard on Thursday). But what do I know? I didn’t even realize what tickets I had bought when I went to the show. I thought I was going to the circus…

28. break you off/hub solo (DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE TO DO THIS BUT I NEEDED TIME LIKE A MOTHERFUCKER....problem is because we stressed the whole "minutes are valuable!!!!!!" thing hub pulled a common and ended his solo early. this is also when i was informed i couldn't get 10 outta dave. i mean he was down to do something but he wanted to do a "song" or something. this is when the whole ghostface "all they do is freestyle" thing bites me in the ass. sure i mean we "could" do something like that...but its like i got the pressure of the mofos who came from far away (plane ticket $400, place to stay $200, tixs and stuff $200, cab and food $100= $1000 plus on my head)---not to mention the new jack journalists trying to make a name for themselves by shitting on us (pitch/crawford/voice)--an easy target...but i swear the the kris in me is growing) and now i gotta take a risk on the biggest night of my life? fuck that i declined much to his dismay. he wasn't trying to put his comedy on the line (dave is worse than me in modesty...said he thought he was gonna ruin the pace of a "great show"---yeah he just walked in 15 mins earlier--what he didn't know is that he woulda actually made my life and ass from a critic beating that much easier because face it...an appearance from a A lister vs. solos? even i'd choose dave. but at this rate going out on a limb doing an unrehearsed song woulda seemed ill timed. so i passed much to their surprise. wish i woulda known alicia was standing backstage. perhaps we coulda did a lil something....but then again...should/woulda/coulda.
29. you got me-no erykah (it wasn't planned she was there for ghost but even if he did show up she still aint arrive til the end.) but kirk hasn't worn out the diehards yet so that got me a nice 10 minute break.
30. the next movement- i begggggged jeff to give me "something' mid second verse (dont know how he lip read me) but i said on "FREEZE" do "peter piper" and LOOOOONG.
31. i told rahzel "you got an hour" as a joke. he took 25 mins---i really didn't want him to go that long but at this rate i felt a near breakdown about to occur cause niggas is just chillin and smilin backstage and i can already read the village reports in my head. (and they ALL said what i knew they were going to say): we knew none of the songs that dave wanted to do (well maybe "sardines" but...this was not the time to be winging it in my head)
32. the regular "the seed" a song we aint done in 2 years. i just wanted to get outta there and take the L.

to make matters worse THE WHOLE backstage comes onstage to say goodbye. which is the WORST dicktease EVER: id rather noone come onstage because all that will do is just make mofos feel like they were cheated: "why didn't erykah do you got me?", "dave was there?!?!", etc etc---

i was just mad.

why?

because the blame is gonna fall on the roots.

tariq is not as famous as his counterparts

tariq aint fucking noone as famous as he is.

tariq is worshipped amongst his peer group but never gets used--not even because they could get eaten alive...only because he has no celebrity. (i mean you think jay-z uses guests on his album because he likes them? no...he is using their cred to further his cause)

tariq is not as animated as his counterparts (neither are most jazz musicians, but you gonna dismiss ornette coleman because he dont tapdance and smile?)

we have no "hits" with the impact of "psa" (the biggest response of both nights)

and most of roots supporters are pretty much on show 20 and there are no more tricks to reveal. even led zep fans burn out after 12 shows...phish/greatful dead fans got a drug culture to dip themselves in to pass the time (i observed keenly and realized that i was a minority at these shows in actually "watching" and "paying attention" most of those jam crowds are high, socializing, got percussion circles, and taking in the whole 4 hour experience.

I've seen the roots a bunch of times now and I can't believe people thought the above was a bad show.
I would have been there if I had the scratch...i'll just have to wait until the show in toronto in july.
