42431, (hand over forehead)
Posted by 15, Fri Jul-28-06 01:13 PM
lord can i PLEASE master a record in the sony building and the shit turn out the way it should be?)

they sent the wrong parts.

this is the 3rd mixed "Don't Feel Right" mixed by timberlands engineer jimmy douglas (Slave too)

but the snare sounds soft

so the version on the album is NOT the version on "pre game"

so--well the few "complete" buffs we got. this was NOT the version i liked.

HOW our mastering guy mixed this with the album version i dont know.

the ONLY cool shit about this was the BASS BLURP is gone on the third verse (something i overlooked)

did i pull a jag by letting this out the bag?

42432, come to think of it
Posted by 15, Wed Jul-26-06 09:10 PM
lol---this is the wrong "here i come" too...lol

drums all low.

ugh
42433, Soft snare, low drums...
Posted by kase, Thu Jul-27-06 06:21 PM
I'd still like to listen to them more than thirty seconds. But since I live in Europe I can't even spend my money for the Pre-Game - german iTunes doesn't offer it.

Wonder if the okayplayer store will ship the bundled package all overseas?

Thanks for TOURING Europe! Already got my ticket (Nov 24th).

(sorry for sending this via message, 15! This is my first post. Just didn't know how it worked)

42434, pre game is dope
Posted by B Side, Wed Jul-26-06 09:13 PM
who is the MC on bread and butter?

--you're right that snare is weak on Don't Feel Right

drove from sf to flagstaff az today and song made 5 playlist. sheeeits fresh mang, lovin the pre game yall. drum quality between the leaked dont feel right and now are crazy. look forward to the real final that will surface sometime
42440, so does this mean the album that leaked isnt fully mastered?
Posted by HighVoltage, Wed Jul-26-06 09:13 PM
cause i think the drums were a bit soft on many of the tracks when they should be louder since it has that raw feel to it.
42441, RE: so does this mean the album that leaked isnt fully mastered?
Posted by _Ignorance_Is_Venemous_, Wed Jul-26-06 09:45 PM
I noticed this too, hopefully it's not the fully mastered version

Either way, album still knocks.
42442, Also, ?uest...
Posted by rhymesandammo, Wed Jul-26-06 10:00 PM
I think that (unless it's unmastered) "Long Time" sounds a little digital and compressed, not as large as it should sound with the orchestration and all. Just throwing that out there.
42443, RE: Also, ?uest...
Posted by Scrappy90, Wed Jul-26-06 10:44 PM
almost posted this same thing earlier, Long Time sounds a little fogged over

if you suck your thumb yo, suck your thumb yo (c) Ghostface
42444, I think the last four songs are perfect
Posted by PungeePyPy, Wed Jul-26-06 10:50 PM
if you're going for that Motown/soul sound. yall done nailed that sound!
42445, ok so I think i'm waay late on this...
Posted by PungeePyPy, Wed Jul-26-06 10:01 PM
but is there a single we can download on Itunes? is that the 'pre-game ep?'
42446, yeah the version yall got is the second mastered version
Posted by 15, Thu Jul-27-06 12:12 PM
we will have mastered this jawn 5 times across 3 different engineers.

this is what the press got. a lil "rush" version.---i think yall got the 2nd mastered version.

i got all noid when tom was breaking down the distortion on "dont feel right" so i used jay and b's masterer engineer.

but the album is way clearer and louder and banging
42447, Now I'm understanding why Roots albums are so expensive to make.
Posted by BrklynzFinestPR, Thu Jul-27-06 12:21 PM
But I'm glad that you are a perfectionist ?uest, cuz in the end its the Fans that win!
42448, what u mean by breaking down distortion?
Posted by , Fri Jul-28-06 10:00 AM
42449, Do you know which version 'Here I Come' is on the promo?
Posted by handle, Wed Jul-26-06 10:04 PM
Is the 'correct' version on the promotional vinyl Def jam sent out last week? (Still waiting for my eBay'd copy to arrive.)

You sound like you got some mastering woes for sure.

If you need some muscle to set these guys straight -let me know.

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1537230/20060726/tribe_called_quest.jhtml?headlines=true

Quest is at it again? NBA 2K7 featuring questlove for the second year in a row. Also A tribe Called Quest to head the Bounce Tour which the roots hosted last year.

42454, wait...
Posted by Andrew595, Thu Jul-27-06 01:30 AM
so is it the pre-game EP that's fucked up, or are we talkin Game Theory itself?

i'm lost.
42455, pre game
Posted by 15, Thu Jul-27-06 12:25 PM
album is straight.
the "parts" sent to the factory for apple to use were wrong
they mixed up the titles (each song has been mastered and mixed a combined 10 times a song)

so im sure there was a mixup like

(looks at shelf with roots dats in a row)

dont feel right
dont feel right clean
dont feel right edit
dont feel right clean edit
dont feel right-4/3 recall
dont feel right clean-4/3 recall
dont feel right edit-4/3 recall
dont feel right clean edit-4/3 recall
dont feel right-j douglas
dont feel right clean-j douglas
dont feel right edit-j douglas
dont feel right clean edit-j douglas
dont feel right-j douglas recall 6/1
dont feel right clean-sony mix-recall 6/1
dont feel right edit-sony mix-recall 6/1
dont feel right clean edit-sony mix-recall 6/1
dont feel right-sony recall
dont feel right clean-sony recall
dont feel right edit-sony recall
dont feel right clean edit-recall

this is to give you an idea of what shelves and boxes look like when they get shipped to mastering.

and 100% its never this neat. you gotta go through dat after dat until you find

"dont feel right 6/15 recall, sony ahmir"

that is the approved album version.

they just grabbed one of the other jawns off the album

normally there is no need for alarm in this area cause if you say "i want "dont feel right 6/15 recall, sony ahmir" on the "pre game ep.

then you just trust they do it.

something told me to check "just to make sure"

glad i did.
42456, cool
Posted by Andrew595, Thu Jul-27-06 02:13 PM
too bad the ep fell apart but i'm glad the album is straight. for a sec there i thought we had a TTP-style fiasco on our hands, w/ everyone freaking out on the release date.
42457, *exhales*

42458, lol at the irony of the situation
Posted by PungeePyPy, Thu Jul-27-06 09:36 PM
?uest said to himself, "hey sumthin don't feel right, let me check." don't feel right, feel right!
42459, do you think the album is going to recoup?
Posted by , Thu Jul-27-06 11:17 PM
there was a rumor it cost almost 10 million to make.
42460, LMAO!
Posted by Troubled Spirits, Thu Jul-27-06 11:33 PM
This is one of, if not THE cheapest Roots album yet...
42461, how do you know that?
Posted by , Thu Jul-27-06 11:52 PM
mixing 13(and maybe the 4 that were cut) songs 10 times each isn't free.
then you got the use of strings & choirs...
clearing the samples...
the art layout...
the mastering (which i guess they had to do twice because quest mentioned firing tom coyne)
the production of the cd's/LP's themself...
and then the video & promotion (but i havent seen either)
42462, 10 mil?!??!?!!??!
Posted by 58impala, Fri Jul-28-06 11:21 AM
put down the moonshine
42463, lot of favors
Posted by 15, Fri Jul-28-06 11:50 AM
times have really changed on the money tip.
artists now pay for their own videos and get little if 0 help.
and somehow we managed to keep the budget under the water level
(well on the real a majority of this record was done during the 4 month
"blackout period" with no budget and us squeeeeeeeezing favors out the ass
--but nah. not ten.
most of our records cost somewhere in the area of 7 figs to make.
42464, 7??!
Posted by ado420, Fri Jul-28-06 01:33 PM
sheeet son, that's harsh.
7 figs seems pretty high, but hey, all the extra time, and unfortunatly money, goes for something right?

and as if it's taken this long, or this many takes, to master the whole LP. I don't think it's unfair to be annoyed at the engineers, they have to deal with crap all the time and try and 'fix' problems in the mix, their way. Each person is different, so I can see this being a rather tedious affair.

Keep up fam, it'll be worth it; mastering is what makes or breaks the majority of records, nowadays especially.
42465, phren cost 2 mil
Posted by 58impala, Fri Jul-28-06 01:38 PM
that aint new info buddy
42466, RE: phren cost 2 mil
Posted by ado420, Fri Jul-28-06 05:17 PM
well, it's news to me, and thx for the info.
I'm sorry if I don't know everything Roots related; I don't see why you gotta pounce like that.

Regardless, I still think it's fairly high, that's all. It makes sense and all, but still.
42467, Bob Power????
Posted by Lovebug98, Thu Jul-27-06 03:06 PM
?????????????

42468, i'm wondering the same thing.
Posted by tonywashington, Thu Jul-27-06 03:59 PM
42469, he's talking about the mastering
Posted by ear2ear, Thu Jul-27-06 05:01 PM
not the mix

I could very well be wrong, but I've never seen Bob listed as the mastering engineer (sure he's done it somewhere along the line though)

42472, I volunteer to flip it like this
Posted by Stranjer, Thu Jul-27-06 05:43 PM
Come to my pad over in Netherland. Now I got my American equipment and I transform them shits so you know the electricity is real dirty, all kinds of voltage fluctuation.
I got a real shitty tape recorder (I mean them shits clicks while not on play or record mode) and we can put it on good old type II's. Transfer them to my Boss CD900 recorder.
Shitty is pretty.
and I always make the snare peak just a tad just to make it snap a dirty whip.
42473, weird
Posted by krewcial, Fri Jul-28-06 03:01 AM
so there's noone making sure the mastering plant only gets the right versions (by making a pre master compilation with the correct versions in the right order), or who sits in on the mastering sessions to make sure the right versions end up on the right album versions ???
42474, I've got a headache now !

do you think "bread and butter" should be on the album? just kidding, is there any other way to be able to get this song other than the pre ep thing? maybe this could be a bonus track for the next roots come alive, which is coming out soon, right quest?
42480, RE: Hey Truck North
Posted by fowler, Fri Jul-28-06 01:48 PM
think its suppose to be on the european version of game theory as a bonus track, but don't think that is confirmed yet.
