42348, FUCK it... i will NOT download it.......
Posted by Airbreed, Sun Jul-16-06 07:47 PM
i used to be a pretty staunch defender of folks who hit up seek and other peer to peers. but now, i think im starting fall to the side of some of these artists who're backstabbed for having thier hard work leaked.

i don't wanna turn this post into a soapbox or anything but dammit... i'd like to hold on to that feeling of anxiety towards impatiently waiting for one of my favorite artists of all time to release thier new album in the STORE.

...where i would race to a mom and pops and cop that bad boy, pop it in the CD player and drive with it all day long with a checkers banana shake or vente green tea frap to suck on.

its a feeling that can never be recaptured. and a feeling that stays with every true blue fan for the rest of thier lives.

i know this because everytime i look to pull it out of my collection to play it again, and again... i can take pleasure into having something meaningful to say when asked... "where were you when you first heard Game Theory?".

"... yeeeaaaah sun, i waz in front of the computa jackin off... drinkin red stripe n shit"

...thats real wack homey. plain and simple.

so yeah niggas... yall can do whatever the fuck y'all want. but yalls gonna be missin out somethin special if yall dont cop it the right way.

that's all.

not for me fam. actually it makes me more angrier for the fact that it was leaked. its just more proof that nothing is sacred with music anymore.

nothing.

haha, it'll be a difficult wait, but I'm seeing them the 14th at Webster Hall, so right now I'm looking foward to that. But inbetween now and then I will probably listen to every Roots cd I own at least two times all the way through.

Who is this Lupe character I keep hearing about on these boards?? I mean, all I know is that Quest said he actually leaked the album to LUPE on PURPOSE, knwoing that it will hit the net, so he's like trying to get some hype around it is all. But anyway, if someone could hip me to some where to begin with this Lupe character. Like any links where I can dwnload some of his songs?? Will he be an OK-artist or featured artist??

Posted by Menphyel7, Sun Jul-16-06 10:06 PM
then go buy the album.

I mean they figure htey have a banging ass album and they want people to hear it. I mean Quest said it himself if he didn't want it ot leak he could have made it htat way. He has done it for every other album and told you the exact day it would leak.

so go download and tell your frienda bout this bomb ass roots album and how its coming out and go buy it.
42362, exactly... forget all this self-righteousness crap..
Posted by HighVoltage, Sun Jul-16-06 10:37 PM
if you download it, knowing you will buy it anyway, why does it matter to you if you hear it now or on the 29th? if you're old school like that, i can respect it, but dont try to shun others for wanting to hear it now.

if the roots were so against this, they wouldnt have 'let it leak' so to speak, let alone publish it on the homepage...
42363, ...um, self-righteousness??

42364, RE: ...um, self-righteousness??

your point was that u didnt want to be jackin it infront of the computer when u first listened? No KY and red stripe here, Put that shit on the ipod and went for a walk.
42365, No, he's talking about...
Posted by Anfernee, Mon Jul-17-06 08:23 PM
like, the feeling you get when you actually buy it. Like, you build up all that anticipation, the relief when you finally remove that tight-ass wrapping, when you press the play button...all that good stuff. You kind of get a kick out of it........and then you start jacking off.

I mean, watching the download countdown and speed, extracting tracks from a zipped file, and loading them up to your iTunes just isn't as satisfying.

People nowadays seem to attach some type novelty on NOT getting a leak, like you hardcore or some shit, while all the while they be yearning for that listen.
Like said above, this is a good way of advertisment, maybe not intended in some cases, but it still does it good.

All I'll say is that I was hyping this LP before I heard it months ago, and now I just do it more, because it's mad fire.

Who are you defending? The artist, or the record label? Because in a lot of these discussions, I get the impression that it is the latter.
42368, RE: FUCK it... i will NOT download it.......
Posted by pidgwillot, Sun Jul-16-06 10:21 PM
I'm partially with you, but not to the extent.
I listened to it once through this morning then deleted it, and I won't be listening to it again until August 28th, when i'll probably have multiple copies.

I doubt i'll remember the songs a month and a half later (theyll still be fresh), and it'll pretty much like i get the first album listening experience twice (though about your last part, who has a cool story about the first time listening to a cd?)

if anyone asks you "where were you when you first heard Game Theory?" in real life, i owe you a quarter. and you owe whoever asks you a punch in the teeth for asking such a gay question. this isn't exactly the kennedy assassination here.

a lot of people look back and say "damn! when blackstar came out i was..." and so on. so it's not really crazy for someone to ask that.

sorry. you're just wrong on that one
42377, RE: FUCK it... i will NOT download it.......

no he's actually right.

he said in "real life", not on a message board on the internet, which is the only time you will hear someone say something like "where were you when you first heard blackstar's album?"...

in day to day interaction, the chances of anyone asking you "where were you when you first heard (insert any rapper/group name here) album?" is slim to none.

i am still resisting, too.

but i am not sure if i can keep it up, going thru a very, very confusing - but also successful - period in my life.

i'll try to keep it up without puttin' myself under pressure, knowing that the idea of coppin' more than one album for future roots fans, has been realized by me since tfa.

another good thing: i'll see the crew live again. i'll be in munich and amsterdam ( 2 times! ).

happy me! :]

I feel ya on waiting until it comes out, you know, like waiting all day when it hot and you been working hard for that cold Mountain Dew in the fridge. But if you have a twelve pack, drinking one or two won't hurt.

And I look at this as more of a controlled leak, like they intentionally left the faucet on. They are tryna get attention for this album. For fans like us who are familar with the Roots, some may wanna hold off. But for someone crusin' myspace who hasn't heard the roots music and they hear these tracks, if they like them and download them, they may add that to their ipod and might even share with a friend or two, who might inturn go to myspace, and check the tracks. They'll might buy the album too when it comes out. So this could go really well for them. It a promotion tactic covered up as a "leak" lol.
42389, I just prefer to wait til its dropped
Posted by queenisisdivine, Mon Jul-17-06 05:31 PM
I like being excited about an album dropping and waiting to hear it makes it that much better. I can count on one hand how many times I've been this amped about an album release. I want to relish this feeling.

come august 29th ill be coming out of best buy with cd in hand, popping it in my cd/mp3 player (gansta), turnin on my fm reciever and turning on the car, press play then be like the fudge with this silence..then oh ya...turn it up.

jam out to the roots as i drive home..itll be like listening to it for the uh..how ever many times ive heard the cd lol....

in other words, itll still be special even though i have the leak.

i think there is a very special feeling as well when you first hear and get a leaked album though (and no not that kinf of special u perverted okps). i mean when the craft leaked i was just in disbelief like no way..the album is leaked already. i had been waiting so long.

the waiting for it to transfer the unzipping all that got me hyped. then playing and hearing it was amazing.

so in the end i think its the music, not the packaging that give us that feeling.

just last week i bought cut chemist, no hearing one song from it. i didnt even listen the the songs on his myspace. i ran around for a couple days looking for the album (long story) so when i finally bought it 5 mins before store closing i was pumped. the ride home was sweet. so i know the feeling you refer to airbreed but move on with the times. as far as letting people be.

everything isnt for everyone.

Ya'll muvafuckas kill me on that don't bootleg/download shit! The last CD I bought was Illadelph Halflife...I bought that shit with Reasonable Doubt and Thats Them by the Artifacts. I was in school down south 2 hours outside of atlanta, or anyplace remotely capable of presenting these cd's in bootleg form. I was poor as hell, then. I'm sure that the $35 or so I spent on those cd's could have been put to better use. Not to mention, somebody cuffed all 3 of those cd's from me at some time or another. I say this shit becuase, contrary to alot of people who I occasionally read posts from on this site....MAD FUCKING PEOPLE ARE STILL MAD POOR! It makes no sense to spend $15-$20 bones for something you can get for $5 or free. I'm sorry. I mean if you make over $40k a year with mad disosable income, do you. But if you like me, got at least two small kids...a mortgage...student loans out the ass..and a ill weed habit, god?...Bootleg that shit, download...steal that shit off the shelf if need be. A wise brother I once interviewed once said that "music is free..if you wanna show me some love, pop $15 at the door of a 1500 seat venue and I'll give you a free CD"...thats the realist shit i ever heard! all this save the music (industry) shit is for the birds and you bird ass niggas who subscribe to it....Lyor Cohen dont give a fuck about me, you, my kids, your rent, or your bullshit nostalgia...(drinkin a frap?..what the fuck?..where they do that at?)...All this shit is anti-hood. I'm sorry at the end of the day...hip-hop is hood, built on hood principles and following hood law! The world aint no fuckin suburb regardless of how you niggas try and make it one. Cant believe this shit. I'm bout to vomit! I mean if you're argument was sound quality..thats one thing. But to say that "where were you when you opened the package to "things fall apart"? Get the fuck outta here! I was blastin' the bootleg in my whip, around the way, blazin' a L..drinking some fuckin remy wit a shorty! SHe had some good pussy. Gave me head during that love of my life joint with common! THATS how you rock nostalgia, son! The thing is I dropped $50 at the show (actually I made like $300..but thats my grind!) And i understand these niggas got quota's to meet and numbers to do. And no disrespect to okay cause okay is truly ill. But if they the kinda cats--AND YOU AND I KNOW DAMN WELL THEY AINT-- thats gonna stop making music cause they only did 100K and def jam dropped them, then they fluke niggas anyway. I was not going to listen to any of game theory unless i knew i had the official complete album
It was for the same reasons you just said
So
When i got my hands on an official complete version of it, i popped it into my cd player, broke out my best headphones, and took the Real Ride
I went through the same motions i did when i first heard phrenology (which i heard the day it came out, no download)
The ONLY difference is i didnt have liner notes or pictures (which have me excited about August 29th), but even when i have the booklet i tend to wait until after i've heard the whole LP before i look in it (its more fun to hear the music first without all the expectations that "featuring ___" or a particular title name can put on your ears)

I don't download albums anymore but buying a new album doesn't support the artist instead it gives money to some shitty ass record label who gets most of the cut. I mostly buy albums USED to support my local record store. New Cds are usually overpriced. Unless it is an underground artist's debut album or I can't find it used I'm not buying it new. Just corporate world fucking me and the musicians over....Plus if the Roots leaked it then that's their problem.

this is my first post ever on this board but it seems like people are pretty upset over the roots album leaking. i downloaded the album, i think its real good and if i have some cash in my wallet on the 29th, ill buy it cuz the roots are one of the few artists ill pay to listen to if i dont have to. but complaining about people getting something for free is foolish. thats just the way things are. and with the album floating around the internet, many more people will get to hear it than if it were only in stores, creating roots fans that might not ever have been. sure they wont be on the billboards as strong and the release date may lose its luster. but a roots show is still going to as sick as it ever was and if the album is good, people are going to listen to it whether its on the internet or in a record store. if it sucks, itll be just as ignored on the net than anywhere else. luckily for the roots, they dont suck.

I like what you posted. However you are fighting a losing battle here. I just tried to discuss the same thing with some friends, they all call themselves Roots fans. Well, basically they trashed my opinion, called me an idiot and said I should get over it and adapt to modern times. One of them told me that people will buy the album regardless - and here I think he is wrong. I am not really sure if that stuff really gives The Roots the hype some say, because people are very ignorant. Game Theory will be bought by the people who always buy their records minus the people who don't wanna spend money for music, plus some that have the money. I can't imagine that the album will manage to do a lot better than the previous albums. It might do slightly better when MTV pushes The Roots a bit while giving Jay-Z some head once again. I know it is a bit off topic by now because it wasnt about album sales but the lost respect in music. But the thing is that those things are important indeed because if The Roots have success, record companies will have a look for similar acts. There are so many talented unsigned hip-hop artists out there and only if quality sells, their chances will improve. You can say it is rubbish but that is how the industry works. Have a look what happens in the UK with all those indie-bands getting major deals because bands like Franz Ferdinand or the Arctic Monkey sell so many records. And now... feel free to trash what I just said...

F'ck all this talk about downloading the album and this and that. Get it how u live!! Catch a show, maybe 2 or 3. NOT MATTER WHAT U HAVE TO DO!!! It surpasses any HIP HOP show u have ever seen. I telling u, these cats have a patented formula that no one can touch! The Roots slammin, rockin, albums don't TOUCH the genius and creativity that flows at the live shows. I have much love, respect and admiration for what The Legendary has done for music and my mindstate.

you know, any artist that says anything relating to downloading is automatically put in the lars ulrich time out box, but shit....

i realized my biggest beef with downloading music is that it requires no investment from the listener. it makes it so easy to treat music like a fuckin disposable diaper. when i used to be broke, and i would buy an album, if it sounded like shit the first day, i would keep it, put it back on 3 weeks later. some of my favorite albums became favorites cause i had 10 bucks invested, and i was determined to get SOMETHING out of that mf. then, 5 listens later(for example=the streets 2nd album), i was into it.
42412, well..

i'd never heard of you until okp.
i downloaded some of your stuff.
i loved it.
i will buy your album sometime this month.
i would never have purchased it if i hadnt downloaded it.

i downloaded Game Theory.
i really enjoyed it.
im not sure i will buy it tho.
if i hadnt dl'ed it i would have definately bought it on release day.

bussiness and music do not mix.

^^Thats fucked up though, if you enjoy the music then support the artist. I respect your honesty though and a lot of people here saying "I downloaded but I'm gonna cop 3 coppies on release day!", who probably wont buy the shit at all.

I never had a problem with downloading a song or two. If someone sends me a link for a new artist I never heard of I'll check it out cuz Im not gonna blindly cop some shit on good faith. However, if you're a fan of a group, you know that they put out quality music, you post on their website and interact with them, why the fuck would you download their shit and not cop? You do know they are trying to SELL records right?

ive since picked up RJD2 and wished i hadnt.
i have changed my mind about buying GT based on quest saying theyve remixed it.

i suppose in some circles my views on 'interlectual property' are kind of extreme tho. ie. i dont think there is such a thing.

i think musicians should earn more money from live performance.
then we would have more bands like the roots!
42415, ticket prices would go through the roof though. n/m

RJ, that makes a lot of sense, and I've had that happen to me as well. I've purchased albums that I just wasn't feeling at first (Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner), but because I felt a need to get my money's worth, I'd listen again and again and the album would grow on me.

But to me, mp3s aren't completely disposable, there have been times where I just forced myself to listen to a song I just wasn't feeling the first few times. But for the most part, I agree with you, there's just no emotional connect with a file, as opposed to a disc lying right in front of you.

I don't really want to take sides on the bootlegging issue, but for the most part, I think mp3s and the internet file-sharing movement has evolved into something that really helps the music industry as a whole.
42419, Well...I agree and disagree.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Jul-30-06 05:58 AM
I think more than anything, especially with high speed internet, it's so easy to accumulate a great deal of music "just because". I have albums I've never even listened to. So while I agree music can be treated as disposable now, I disagree that purchased music is less disposable. If I have an album that sucks, MP3 or CD, I'll listen 2-3 times and then do away with it however I need to. That may be selling it, letting it sit in my room for months, or letting it fester in the depths of my hard drive.

That being said, while I do download copius amounts of music, some of which I've never even heard, I would have never heard/bought that music in the first place, so I can't really be at moral odds with downloading it. THAT being said, I do buy music from artists I support (The Roots, Common, Tool, Outkast, etc.) I will buy Game Theory. Hopefully I have a job by late August.

Just supply your own Hot Air!

I downloaded that shit last week. Its dope as fuck. I'm not gonna buy an official copy, (unless the official release is somehow different....and then hello allofmp3.com).

Maybe my free copy costs the roots $3. Just not gonna trip over it. I've bought every other offical Roots release: including Organix, From the Ground Up, The Legendary EP, all 5 Things Fall Apart CDs and both versions of the Roots Come Alive. Soblowme.

And whats the point of buying a CD copy anyway (with magical shrink wrap and all) if cats don't listen to CDs? Even if someone waits and does the "honorable" thing @ iTunes Music Store, is the album less dope on a iPod?

Horseshit homey.

on the really real, cats dont make money off record sales. Thats how the record companies make their money. Lets say you sell a mil right, you platinum. You maybe only getting at the MOST 4 dollars a cd, then you get hit with studio costs for making it, promotional shits, and all that other mess plus taxes(dont even get me started on that bullshit) so you maybe get 1-2 dollars MAYBE in the pocket. Thats like a mil between 5-6 niggas. So after all that you might have 100-200k to show.
The money is made on the road, doin shows, radio gigs all that. you might get 50g's a night on tha road(roots prolly much much more) So all this bullshit about taking artists liberties away and all that is just was it is, bullshit. Of course the record companies dont want you to bootlegg cause you takin their cut.
The way i look at it is, if you are feeling it, show em some love and go cop it for real. But it dont mean you cant cop the bl first ya heard.
(some of these dumb niggas dont deserve my money ya know? ill dl that wackness all day, listen to it, a week later deletin it.)
Q keep doing yall thing, hip hop needs it now more than ever
42423, while what you said is true, you still need to sell records to survive
Posted by HighVoltage, Sun Jul-23-06 11:49 PM
no matter how many shows you do on the road.

in fact, if they finally reach the status they desire, they wont have to spend seemingly every day of their life on the road.
42424, RE: while what you said is true, you still need to sell records to survive
Posted by sauld420, Sun Jul-23-06 11:57 PM
yeah i hear that, but they arent business men, the are true artists. I can see them playing shows until they die, long after they stop putting out banging albums. Music was meant to be heard live, not on wax or cd.

It's the cats I don't really know that I usually don't personally buy the album. I "investigate" those first. But I will forever buy all the OK Artists and affiliates albums.
42430, this is a dead-ass topic i stopped even thinking about
Posted by rjd2, Mon Jul-31-06 09:33 AM
a year or two ago, but from the responses, im not sure if anybody is getting my point.

Im not trying to give a financial reason why you should buy or not buy anything.

Im just pointing out that in myt experience, if i get music for free(promo, friend, whatever) i am statistically less likely to get into it because i dont put as much time into trying to like it.

This obviously doesnt apply to the "te la nunt", classic-out-the-box records, it applies to the (initially) marginal records that may have some great songs on them after you listen to them 5 times.

As always, i appreciate all the support. Yes, people can make some change off selling records. No, you dont want your favorite musicians touring as their only way to make a living. trust me.
