40672, sorry, but how wack (and subtly offensive) was J.Davey @ RCMH?
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 12:33 PM
first off, let me apologize and completely remove my following statement if she is at all Native American.

but if she's not........what the hell was she thinking? first off, she made me realize all the things abou L.A. i do not like, the skinny ass barbie looking chicks, the ridiculously short clothes, and the cultural ignorance. The feathered headdress? If Black Thought rocked a show in a sombrero and poncho, or if Kelly Clarkson did the same with an African garment, I would fully expect people to bitch, and with a right, so Im bitching. Does she think that shit just looks cool? I really wanna hear if anyone else thought that shit was a big deal, because i felt she was the low point of both nights with no class and poor music, but the music shit is subject to opinion.
40673, eh, didnt bother me
Posted by HighVoltage, Tue May-23-06 12:56 PM
if you are native american and it offended you, i understand.

but i didnt think twice about it.

their music wasnt too bad either despite what a lot of people claimed it was. Would i have preffered someone lile Kane instead? fuck yeah, but its not like they were bad.
40674, the music thing is an opinion thing, i admit, but...
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 01:00 PM
you can't really just brush off the whole headress thing, maybe im young and idealistic, but if she were to have picked something from a more represented minority (haha, ironic) shit woulda hit the fan. I just hate when artists have to broadcast their ignorance, i know everyone has their prejudices and ignorances (NOT saying she did it to disrespect purposefully) but leave that shit off the stage.
40675, But... you do realize that Africans and Native Americans are
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 01:07 PM
one in the same don't you?
If not... I invite you to read up on Native American culture...
and African culture. Often times people take offense at what they have no knowledge about.
40676, one and the same? far from it. yes, I know they were very closely
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 01:12 PM
related at several moments in history, but I was referring more to the present day situation of both minorities. Maybe I should just state the assumptions I had when I said what i said:

- J.Davey is not of any Native American descent
- She wore it merely for fashion and not for any deeper meanings
- She didn't think twice about it.
40677, actually you must not know much cause they are...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 02:00 PM
first... again...
read up on Native American history and then African history...

if you know anything you'll know Africans were here first...
not being able to tie two cultures in that have the same parallel themes is just... well... blind... huh blackfoot indian?

knowing that... well... don't mean to spell anything out for you but it's common sense... but gather your facts first...
put your ego down, grab a book.

Also do you know JDavey? If not how can you speak on what her intentions where... and if she is native American? You don't know... then maybe you shouldn't be so quick to speak on it.
40678, So everyone's African then, by your logic...
Posted by RaMosDef, Tue May-23-06 03:32 PM
...we can say the first human remains were found in Africa or wen can go all the way back to Pangaea (sp) times were all the continents were connected...where do we draw the line?
40679, Actually it's a known fact that Africans were here first...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 03:44 PM
and that the first Natives (who eventually became the Native Americans you commonly know) were African
you sound like someone who has an opinion.. .but hasn't read up on it. It has little to do with my logic... it's history.
Of course you won't find this in white institutions cause they believe in seperating people of color... it's how they win.

The truth is.. everyone is African... however, let's not go there...
read up on Native American culture and African culture...
then get back at me.
40680, I understand the whole 'coming from the same seed' shit, but in
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 03:48 PM
2006, i dont play that. there's a long conversation in that and I really don't want to get into it on a message board, whatever, I guess I opened myself up for it, I shoulda known
40681, don't play what? Do you even know JDavey's family?
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 03:56 PM
I mean... you are being assumptive as hell don't ya think?
40682, i meant of the idea. the Davey shits been clarified (supposedly)
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 04:05 PM
and i dont say that with any malice.
40683, what idea? So when white folks dress like black males...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 04:08 PM
do you pull them up too?
40684, yes actually, i think its very very wack, and unconsciously
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 04:13 PM
prejudice in some cases. like i said, stuff like this (or what i thought was the J Davey example) happens all the time and its wack.
40685, *sigh*...
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 04:18 PM
even bigger *sigh*
40686, so, if everyone is african, should whites get reparations?
Posted by violence, Tue May-23-06 04:26 PM
i mean, it happened to their ancestors too, right? since we're all related and everything.

LOL.

get off of it.

you sound absolutely ridiculous.

even if you gather the DNA evidence that shows that modern day native americans emigrated from west africa (and not east asia via the land bridge connecting the USSR to present day alaska), you still would have to make quite the leap to say that j. davey is part native american as a result of THAT... (edit: filthy says she is part native american probably due to her genealogy in the RECENT PAST), but as for that 'all natives americans are black' argument, have you ever heard of the concept of cousin once removed, twice removed, etc? that would make j davey a native american 200 times removed or so (absent having a native american ancestor in her recenet genealogy, which filthy informs us is the case).

edit: filthy says she is part native american because she can probably trace her genealogy to show a recent native american ancestor...all that 'all native americans are black b/c they descended from africans at some point in the distant past' stuff is hogwash. in that case, bush is black too.
40687, what is this? a sign of logic? hark.
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 04:29 PM
but some say she is directly native american, so i could understand, but you are basically saying the idea i was trying to push. im glad someone got it.

these are the words of someone that knows what
they are talking about. my sentiments exacty.

and you know what? i dont care if shes Native American or not,
that ish is offensive and she sucked horribly.
40706, but what's worst than a selfstyled elitist with the wrong facts?
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 02:19 PM
?

Skimpy Barbie outfits... sure that's a problem...
hating on her cause she has a nice shape...
that's a problem too...

exploitation of self... yeah that's a problem...
exploiting your ignorance in a post when you think youre making a point... that's a bigger problem.

At least Jdavey got paid... she wins.
40707, and then people take message board shit...overboard.

im not hatin on her shape, i just find it unnatractive and played out.
her clothes, yeah, im hatin.
her music, yeah, im hatin.

Posted by ThePrez, Tue May-23-06 02:53 PM
The head dress thing you are blowing way out proportion. Anyway if you look closely she kind of has a epicanthal fold. So she might be Indian.

And as far as her outfit goes. I enjoyed seeing her ass cleavage in those booty shorts. If you got it flaunt it. Kept my eyes on her.

And her music is not my thing but I’m sure as her music progresses it will become more tolerable to others. But she didn’t suck, I was aighttttttt.

that's how we build.
40719, the way she was singing was just a wack, high-pitched, fast-ass
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 03:53 PM
vaguely go-go's, oozing Valley-Girl/high class L.A. shit. theres mos def an audience for that, but its definetly not me.
40720, What's culturally offensive about wearing a headrest?
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Tue May-23-06 04:00 PM
Explain it to me. Outkast faced the same criticism when they had a native American motiff during the grammys. I like to hear a really good explanation as to why wearing native american garb could be considered offensive, while wearing, for example, Kimonos(sp) would not be (or is that offensive as well)?
**********

Reality check: according to the 2000 census, there were more than 31,000 black physicians and surgeons, 33,000 black lawyers. There are about 1,400 black athletes playing professional basketball, football and baseball combined.
40721, its adopting something very, very serious about a foreign culture
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 04:03 PM
its disrespectful. If someone rocked a show in an Aztec headress, or a poncho and sombrero (not that the last two are important, but they border on cultural minstrelsy when someone else wears them) I would be offended. Mind you, im not a feelin-catching bookworm or nothing, but i recognize certain lines that should not get crossed, but do alot in todays media.
40722, the fact that you even used the word 'foreign' show that u don't know
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 04:06 PM
anything about the history of that culture...
Native Americans were black people... they have roots going all the way back to Africa... who taught you they were not black folks?
White racists who also taught you they were savages... killers... and the enemy...
damn... c'mon... we were making progress and then you use the word 'foreign'...
I haven't used that word in over 10 years.. .why? cause if you are of the earth... what's foreign about it? Nothing. Who uses that word? White elitists who could care less aobut anything other than themselves, money, and the O.C.
40723, GAAAA! haha, I meant anyone outside of a particular culture
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 04:10 PM
and I dont buy that the average Black person living in Los Angeles has any relevant cultural ties to Native American culture just by being of African descent. Just like if I have a son, who has a son, who has a son, who has a son, his last name will still be Reyes, but if he's born, raised and living completely in the U.S., he will not have the same ties to Mexican culture that i do.

I WAS NOT TALKING ABOUT J DAVEY IN THE LAST POST, i was just letting the dude know the IDEA behind what i said. whew.
40724, I'm not saying the average black person... your missing thepoint
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue May-23-06 04:15 PM
what I'm saying is...
African culture/Native culture have seriously deep rooted ties...
that's A)...

B)
I'm also saying please stop giving your opinions... and read up on it first... it just makes you look uninformed and loud. Which isn't the best combination.

What I'm also saying is in addition to being uninformed and loud, your being assumptive. If you know her history.. fine... but if you don't... well...

That being said

you don't know the African/Native American history...
you don't know JDavey's familytree history
yet you are offended. Hmmm. Something is wrong here... and all arrows are pointing at you. Pardon the pun.
40725, message boards are for opinions, i gave mine.
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 04:21 PM
i am aware of African-Native American connections in history, do i think they extend to present day? no. I very much think two cultures grew like branches to a place where they are very much their own today. Do i think the histories of cultures and races gives modern day people a pass to try an adopt certain symbols mindlessly like i THOUGHT was happening with J Davey (no one has actually proven that shes Native American, but i didnt have any proof she wasnt either, so...), nope. my bottom line: i know where i stand, i know what i know, this is a message board im not gonna have a works cited about my opinions, ill talk about them as much as i want in good taste. i think ive done that, if you don't, its cool, give your opinion.
40726, so the word of someone who knows her personally
Posted by Gangsta Mittens, Tue May-23-06 04:30 PM
and works with her means nothing to you.

Methinks you won't be happy until you see some sort of genetic character mapping that proves her ethnicity to a satisfactory level for you.

That means you have too much time on your hands. The woman is part Native American. Get over yourself. You wanted something to bitch about, cool. Talk about how you didn't like the music. The rest is extra
40727, talk about bitching. *takes a deep breath*
Posted by sweeneykovar, Tue May-23-06 04:34 PM
i said something about her ethnicity without stating any kind of source, you did the same. Can i not point it out? you then say you work with her, cool, you now made your point more valid. if someone says something i think itd be pretty asinine of anyone, me OR you, to believe it just like that. but im sorry, i should have known you meant that you knew her when all you said was that she was part Native American. my apologies, sheesh.
40728, basically... it is extra
Posted by AquamansWrath, Wed May-24-06 09:01 AM
that's all I'm saying...
40729, So now your saying cause you know nothing, they stopped?
Posted by AquamansWrath, Wed May-24-06 09:00 AM
cause you know nothing of African/Native connections... they don't extend to modern day? Your saying this based on what? You have already said you don't know anything about that culture... yet you have an opinion on where it stands today? Really? How does that work again? Lol.

Sure it still extends today... it's blood, it's history... it's as involved as the people are...
40730, uh hello she is

Posted by ihatehaters, Tue May-23-06 07:06 PM
I don't know if she is or isn't Native American. I do know LA based songbird, Kim Hill has been rockin' a headdress for a while now. In fact unless youv'e been under a rock in the LA, everybody knows that. So is there a connection? Or are people running out of ways to express themselves.
40734, is Quest dating her....
Posted by Theatris, Tue May-23-06 07:09 PM
I don't get it. I have seen J.Davey perform twice and they were horrible both times. Uncomfortable and offensive. I saw them perfom at a choclate city event, people were leaving during the perfomance. I then read a review about it which said it was a great show. Sometime the uber hip just get it wrong.
40735, first one to say NO. i know, as do many others, that is not the case

Hating on the girl cause of her frame is fucked up. How about her energy, courage, her ability to waltz across the stage in platforms and booty shorts with no booty (wink Jack) in front of THOUSANDS at Radio City!!! Everyone has a dream yawl. And she's rocking it.

And when will New Yorkers realize that a) Africans always show their ass: see every island in the Caribbean and Africa
AND LA has the weather to wear flip flops and asses out. That's all. Nothing more. Geography.

First off, I'm glad that The Roots collective has the balls to put J. Davey on and give them exposure that they would otherwise not get.

I can understand if you didn't dig the music, but it was executed flawlessly. Jack has a killer voice and even though she was singing intensly and with a loud tone there were no flat notes and there was no distortion in her singing voice. That was impressive off the top. Secondly, the band was rocking that shit. Sure it was on some Berlin meets Nona Hendrix vibe (I hadn't heard any of their shit before the show) but again, it was performed well and was high energy.

But to shit on her for her style and to say she was offensive and then to tie it into some L.A. hate is just fuckin stupid. Obviously, you're not old to remember LaBelle or Parliament/Funkadelic and the gear they used to rock...or even 80's icons like Berlin, Missing Persons, Grace Jones or Nona Hendryx on the solo tip. Wifey said to me while she was on, "they just ain't ready for this shit". But got damn it was 10 minutes...as much great shit that happened on that stage you're seriously reaching to make a hate post on an act you didn't like and you assumed was offensive without all the facts. Just say you didn't like the music, take a bathroom break like many people did and keep it moving.

3. If it ain't for you, it aint' for you, but they're music is not wack.
4. She ain't biting Kim Hill. I assumed it referenced her photo shoot in the last XLR8R magazine (XLR8R, right???).
5. Hate on.

I wasn't crazy about the music actually. As far as the fashion goes, yeah, I thought it was kinda corny, I mean I'm Chinese but I'm not gonna go gigging in a coolie hat. But whatever, evidently some people liked it, more power to them.

Late Pass:

I'm glad this shit was resolved but, its gotta be said for artist, music, etc. in general

1)I dunno...you can't assume the relevance of what someone is suggesting in their songs, simply because it isn't apparent to you as an audience member. You assuming the headdress has no relevance, is just as bad if she were assuming certain ethnic stereotypes...just sayin'.

2) They gotta song called "Cowboys & Indians"...I'd advise you to give it a good listen. Namely, if you were at their Temple Bar show in L.A. last New Years, you'd note the singers political statement about xenophobia, the cultural war painting of "other ethnics" in modern day warfare, and extreme conservativism creeping into our society - and then draw the connection between Andrew Jackson and the whole "Cowboys & Indians" concept that people *still* grow up with on an innocent level as kids. Like I said, its not completely obvious and its not like they're going to break into a political statement clarifying, like they did at that show all the time...good thing about music like this is, you're expected to think for yourself. Because if they had started soapboxing on stage then the same cats that don't like the headress would prolly say they're too preachy - can't win with some folx.

Does, that make her a card carrying member of the Cherokee Nation? No - but I think it deserves a little more credit than that.

Now that 15 clarified that she is N.A?!

>first off, let me apologize and completely remove my
>following statement if she is at all Native American.

For the record I stayed standing when she performed simply because a. Jacks voice was great. b. I had never heard them before. and c. because she was having a real rockstar moment. Choice!

Hopefully she accepts your apology and we can all have that awkward silence moment when someone puts there foot wayyyy in their mouth.

J. Davey sucked at that show. They or she, or whoever, had no business breaking up the flow of the show like that. I have been going to Roots concerts since 97', and the J. Davey break was the worst part of any show I have seen. Definitely killed my high (musical and otherwise).

I could care less if she was native american or not. Wack is wack. Her outfit was wack, her songs were wack, and everyone I was sitting near was praying for the next act to come out after the first song.
40782, jdavey suck balls.
