40643, HATE TO SAY IT.

But is Game Theory really that great?
How does it compare to others?
40644, RE: HATE TO SAY IT.

Yeah, you sure seem to "hate to say it"...I mean, you obviously hated to say it so much that you started a bullshit thread to simply point out "you hate to say it" that GAME THEORY isn't all that great.

Well, here's the thing, son: it is great. GAME THEORY is one of the finest records I have heard. It is possibly The Roots greatest accomplishment--maybe not as great as "Things Fall Apart," end-to-end, but in this time and place, and at this point in their career....

...sheeeiiittt. Come on, son! This is a masterwork. I heard the leak, and from the second I heard it, I could not be happier for The Roots, or for myself as a Roots fan. They straight delivered.

Period.

So take your "look at me!" bullshit somewhere else. People around here appreciate classic ish when they hear/see it. And that is exactly what "Game Theory" is.
40645, ^^ I guess this post ends right here.

cosign. the more time that goes by from Game THeory's release,
the more i contemplate it being The Roots best album.

40649, Its good, but it could have been great...

Its not their best album either.

Things Fall Apart is still their best album. Its complete, front to back, no filler, no drop off, just a great album.

Game Theory has its share of filler.

I'd say these cuts are the strongest and "great" cuts:

Game Theory
In The Music
Baby
Here I Come
Long Time
Can't Stop This

Here are the good cuts, but not really great:

Don't Feel Right

Here are the filler cuts:

False Media (understood the attempt, but failed to hit the mark)
Take it There (understood the attempt, but failed to hit the mark)
Livin in a New world (just doesn't belong. the green thumb on a hand with orange fingers).
Clock with No Hands (generic)
Atonement (generic).

So yeah, too much filler to be a great album.

Not complete enough.

Funny how all the songs you think were unnecessary, all the experimental tracks, I thought are absolutely necessary to the album.

and really? TFA has no filler? no drop off? I mean, I like diedre vs. dice and, well, a lot of the songs on the album, but you have to admit that some of the songs are serving to make the album a longer experience, and they aren't necessarily of the same quality at all.

green thumb on a hand with orange fingers? sounds like parliament to me haha.

40651, Take It There is dope as fuck!
Posted by BrklynzFinestPR, Fri Oct-20-06 06:28 PM
Are you kidding? The way the music build up was ill and Black Thought was spittin' some fire on that last verse. Shit gets me hype every time. Now if you're not feeling the poetry smack dab in the middle thats one thing (Personally I dig it) but you cant front on the rest of it. Oh and Clock With No Hands is one of the best songs on that album.

The only song I may agree with you on are Living In a New World because of the singing, but Black Thought is talking some real shit on that too.
40652, this whole album is filler if you looking at it "that" way
Posted by qoolquest, Fri Oct-20-06 08:07 PM
so you mean to tell me that you play "the spark" and "diedre vs dice" all the time?

i think yall mistake TFA for the "feeling of hip hop in 1999"

and if you STILL stand by that statement then i would like to know

what rhyme did riq drop on GT that merits your inferior standard?

40653, RE: this whole album is filler if you looking at it "that" way
Posted by poetik, Mon Oct-23-06 03:01 AM
Diedre vs. dice is one the illest hiphop songs i errr heard.
40654, it may not be great, but it is real fucking good
Posted by nocturnal, Thu Oct-19-06 09:58 AM
and i'll take that any day of the week. like the previous poster said, it is completely appropriate for its time and place, and i think that goes a long way....you bump Game Theory 15 years from now and it provides critical insight into what was going on both within hip-hop and the country, side by side.

and besides the messages contained in the album, the music is superb...i haven't been feeling the production this much on a roots album since TFA.
40655, best buy has a sale
Posted by Pkjr703, Thu Oct-19-06 10:34 AM
on P Diddys new album if you want to cop that. you might want to check that out since you arent feeling GT.

I mean it's not my favorite Roots album, but it's a damn good album. I really can't stand "False Media," (the chorus is awful) but other than that I like most of the other songs, some more than others.
40659, illadelph > do you want > things > everything else.

40660, Am I the only one truly feeling False Media?
Posted by domper, Thu Oct-19-06 08:51 PM
Strange.

BTW- this album hasn't left my car's CD player since it came out, and it was getting non-stop rotation for the first three weeks.
40661, RE: Am I the only one truly feeling False Media?
Posted by nanuco29, Thu Oct-19-06 10:10 PM
I love False Media. I keep singing the chorus in my head every time I think of Game Theory. I was stuck in a class all day at work and was dyin to get out just to put the album on. It's been a while an album has had that effect on me. False Media's really grown on me. It's kind of haunting. Game Theory is right up there with Things Fall Apart.
40662, song is ill and fits perfectly
Posted by auxyray, Fri Oct-20-06 01:41 PM
40663, False Media is a great intro..
Posted by BrklynzFinestPR, Fri Oct-20-06 06:33 PM
And I love how BT starts the verse..
If I cant work to make it Ill rob to take it/either that or me and my family are starving and naked.
Ill way to start the album IMO

40664, yep

40665, i think Game Theory IS that great.

Game Theory is that great.
40667, i just don't think it ended right
Posted by 6thSense, Fri Oct-20-06 09:46 PM
i think game theory is the best roots disc, even tho Things Fall Apart is the illest (meanin it's really really dope).

i just don't like the end. and i love dilla to death.

and i understand that he made "time" for ya'll, but i from the moment i heard "last donut of the night" thought it'd ill for Tariq. So when I heard the last joint on the album was gonna be a Dilla donut i was hopin it'd be that. i know that's mad nerdy and corny to wish ya'll rocked a different Donut, but oh well.

In general I just wasn't feelin how the album ended.

The album does not end as good as the album is... does that make sense?

Thought's verse on "false media"... ridiculous

Everyone I play "In the music" for gets so fuckin open off them drums.

"Take It There"... whaT! the way that shit starts

"Long Time" in my opinion could've been The Roots "Crazy." It also kinda bugs me that it's sandwiched between Here I Come and New World which are mad loud and Long Time isn't. I know that's mad corny, but mastering wise, ya know?

"Livin In A New World" is crazy dope. That hook. The beat, and the verse.

The album is fuckin nice with the seamless flow.

And Black Thought is just unbelievable. I mean literally... unbelievable.
40668, RE: i just don't think it ended right
Posted by Super_Kweli, Fri Oct-20-06 10:16 PM
I kinda liked the way it ended, its definitely the least played track for me but its still tight. Other than that every track on the album has something to offer my only complaint is that its a little short but still 13 songs no filler, this album is fire.

Game Theory is the WORST ever.
40671, Personally it's my favorite Roots album thus far
