Seu Jorge
Samba Soul Brother #1
Friday, June 30
Brazilian Samba Soul singer-songwriter and musician Seu Jorge has achieved international acclaim for his captivating voice and guitar-playing, writing and arranging skills. Lauded by fans worldwide for renewing the Samba Pop style, critics have also praised both his debut Carolina (Brazil's 1999 Album of the Year) and 2005's Cru.
Once a homeless street child in a favela outside of Rio de Janeiro, Seu Jorge still has street attitude. In the 2002 film City of God, he provided a stellar performance as bus driver Knockout Ned.
Impressed by Jorge's acting talent, director Wes Anderson recruited him for his 2004 picture The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou – a film in which Jorge took on the part of guitar-strumming shipmate Pelé dos Santos. Jorge innovatively contributed to the movie's soundtrack by covering several David Bowie tracks in Portuguese.
