Seu Jorge
Samba Soul Brother #1
Friday, June 30
Brazilian Samba Soul singer-songwriter and musician Seu Jorge has achieved international acclaim for his captivating voice and guitar-playing, writing and arranging skills. Lauded by fans worldwide for renewing the Samba Pop style, critics have also praised both his debut Carolina (Brazil's 1999 Album of the Year) and 2005's Cru.
Once a homeless street child in a favela outside of Rio de Janeiro, Seu Jorge still has street attitude. In the 2002 film City of God, he provided a stellar performance as bus driver Knockout Ned.
Impressed by Jorge's acting talent, director Wes Anderson recruited him for his 2004 picture The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou – a film in which Jorge took on the part of guitar-strumming shipmate Pelé dos Santos. Jorge innovatively contributed to the movie's soundtrack by covering several David Bowie tracks in Portuguese.

REMG, Shaman Fam & The Academy, in conjunction with CKLN present
J*DAVEY & ALOE BLACC

CKLN presents a soulful, funked up evening with L.A.’s J*DaVeY and Aloe Blacc.

What do you get when you mix a bold, modelesque, mohawked chick with a boys name and an electro-funk-soul, uber-hip robotica boy with a name fit for a girl? What happens when you blend one-part Electronica, two-parts Soul and a sprinkle of Funk and Hip-Hop? What do you think evolves when you take a little bit of yesterday, a little more of today, and a whole bunch of tomorrow and throw it in a boiling pot of magic musical fusion?

Well, by definition, you have whipped up a hot, undeniable batch of J*DaVeY, a duo with a sound that screams of past, present and future. Their progressive Soul melodies are infused with New Wave electronic impulses that mesh so beautifully it is almost impossible to put a label on it. Thus, the connection between the mysteriously androgynous name and the new sound becomes simple and plain: J*DaVeY.

The duo is being heralded as a cross between Erykah Badu, Prince and Radiohead and some future sound that has yet to be named. With hot tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Benji B, and Berry King and hit record-makers such as ?uestlove (The Roots), electronic soul crooner Steve Spacek, and even Prince as fans, J*DaVeY Iis the new age musical sustenance for next level consumers who are aching to have their bellies filled.

Southern California native Aloe Blacc began his recording career as an MC in 1995, when he joined up with hip-hop producer Exile to form the mainstay indie rap group, Emanon. A few years later, Aloe would stow away on a Lootpack European tour and became friends with Oh No, a relationship which led to many collaborations as a solo artist.

Aloe Blacc has evolved into a true Renaissance man, dubbed the indie R. Kelly by online retailer Turntable Lab. Recordings like his Latin cover of John Legend’s Ordinary People prove that not only can this multi-instrumentalist produce, rap and sing but he can flip it in Spanish, too. With an amazingly broad set of influences ranging widely from the acoustic guitar stylings of folk artist Cat Stevens, to the soul-stirring sounds of the Negro Spirituals, Aloe prides himself on the spectrum of his musical roots. His sound often forays into the digital R&B realm, but always grooves with a tinge of Latin and the pulse of hip-hop.

seu jorge was dope as hell. that had to have been in my top three shows.
he sounded awesome, the band sounded awesome.
i just wish he moved around the stage a bit more but whatever, it was cool.

i'm in love with his percussionist..i mean that FOINE cuica player. shit.

and yeah, that lupe show was short as hell. i left to go to the back after "kick push" to find my friend cus he didn't wanna come to the front...i was gonna come back and then all of a sudden it was over. i guess i should've realized he wouldn't do kick push right in the middle of his set.

Posted by Bluesnswing, Tue Jul-04-06 03:11 AM
Anyone catch any of this? I caught ALL of it. So much music in the last 11 days. I'm about all music-ed out (except of course for the Roots on Wednesday!).

Highlights for me were Marcus Miller, one of my tenor saxophone heroes Lew Tabackin, Kenny Garrett with the Pharoah Sanders Quartet (3 songs, plus a little outro, and it lasted an hour and 45 minutes!!!), Seu Jorge, and the late night jam sessions every night at the Rex. I wish more people knew about these because there was full bar and kitchen service until 4 every morning. Such a beautiful time hanging out every night, playing a little, and digging what everyone else was laying down. Etta James' pianist sat in one night, as well as Charnett Moffet (one of the best bass players in the world, who was in town with McCoy Tyner), and Pharoah Sanders' bass player.

39605, Roy Ayers rescheduled date!
Posted by Bluesnswing, Thu Jul-06-06 04:16 AM
I was very disappointed when, last Thursday, I went to Harbourfront Centre, all set to see Roy Ayers, and found a completely deserted venue. I called my buddy who was doing security for the jazz festival, and he said that the show had been rescheduled for November! He said that the official reason was that one of the band members was sick, but that it was most likely due to extremely low ticket sales. Makes sense, as there was SO much going on during the festival, and for some reason, they charged 50 bucks. So now the show has been rescheduled for Thursday November 16th at a TBA venue. I'm guessing the Mod Club, as that's where Roy played last November.

Also, two shows WAY in the future. Wednesday March 14th, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra will be playing Massey Hall. It'll have been almost an entire THREE YEARS since Wynton was last in town. That was his 2004 jazz fest show with the quintet, in which he came down to the jam session with his band, at 2:15 in the morning, and played ANOTHER 2 hours! He busted up his lip, playing so hot, that he had to cancel the next night in Montreal and take a whole month off!

The other show is Sonny Rollins, also Massey Hall, Saturday May 5th. Sonny's still great, although his band is truly terrible. But it's definitely worth it. He's my hero.

Other cool stuff at Massey Hall is Bela Fleck & The Flecktones (Sep. 13), Sergio Mendes (Oct. 7), Ladysmith Black Mambazo (Oct. 19), the Afro-Cuban All Stars (Nov. 4), Los Lobos (Nov. 10), and the Blind Boys of Alabama (Apr. 14). Looks like it'll be a great year!
39606, RE: Roy Ayers rescheduled date!
Posted by little bredren, Thu Jul-06-06 04:28 AM

i've seen roy before but to see him bobbi humphrey and the rest promises to be some real beautiful music. i'll be there in november but chike'll be back in chi-town so he'll miss out.

39621, So pissed off...(re: The Montreal Bistro)
Posted by Bluesnswing, Sat Jul-08-06 03:16 PM
They closed the Montreal Bistro; the last remaining world class jazz club in Toronto. Fuck that!! I cannot believe how awful this is. Apparently there was a dispute over the lease or something, which makes sense, because that area (it was at the corner of Adelaide and Sherbourne) is getting some super-ritzy development on it.

So now Toronto does not have one world-class jazz club. That's a club that has a quiet policy, a good piano, and the ability to bring in musicians from the U.S. In the last year, we have lost both of our great clubs; the Senator closed almost a year to the day before the Bistro.

I mean, there's still good clubs. The Rex is still great, and thriving, but it's a bar with jazz; not a jazz club. The Red Guitar is a fantastic club, but it's tiny. The Trane Studio is alright, but they don't have a piano! Same with the Pilot Tavern. We need some rich motherfuckers to just start a new club.
39622, i know its a long ways from now but still.

Seriously. Tribe ain't something to procrastinate on. Cop them joints then listen to some hits, stretch out your neck so you don't get a cramp from the non-stop headnoddin you will have to endure then do some military presses so your arms don't fall off from having your hands up in the air all night.

yo, the sound was shit, but its the guvernment, so that's expected
but the energy in that place was ri-got-damn-diculous.
Everybody jumping up and down and just going straight buckwild.
And, what was the clincher was when he came out into the middle of the crowd.
He just stormed off stage w/ a mic and just walked through the crowd. He stopped in the centre and one guy started break dancing. It was like a scene out of a movie. Here's KRS Standing there, rapping, while there's this guy dancing in the centre, and the rest of the crowd just bouncing their hand up and down towards the middle. It was fuckin' phenomenal.

For those that might disagree, take into account a couple of things
a) KRS was clearly pissed about the sound being shit. I think that's why he just went into the crowd. He was there for the people. When he stormed off stage, my first reaction was "oh shit, he's gonna go attack the sound guy" (a la OC @ the hiero show).
b) KRS was pissed that the guvernment called the show early. It's a club night, they weren't gonna let him go on for hours. But he himself was like "this is a 21 year career. we have tonnes of music we can play. this can go all night long". Personally, i think KRS was willing to go like 3 hours if guvernment let him.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. GO SEE KRS.

well, i'd say go to www.amnesia.ca but there's nothing on that site. i keep hearing about it on flow and i heard it on worldwide this morning... so im pretty sure its legit. i'd guess you can get tix at the regular outlets: play de, record peddler etc etc. not sure about ticketmaster though. gonna get mine at the door.

i hear amnesia (and redemption) are the two big jams in the city. i've heard of redemption so if this is the same calibre, it should be good. i know starting from scratch is gonna be djing...

wow, it pains me to say this, but that rakim concert was pretty awful
i mean, it was great seeing him in person and i don't regret going, but performance/enjoyment-wise, it was horrible, arguably the most boring concert i've ever been to
he has no energy, no connection with the audience, and u can't hear half the shit he's saying (but maybe that was the venue's fault)
either way, i was negatively surprised
nevertheless, he's still a legend and ridiculously amazing, but just not a good live act by any means
39732, RE: Upcoming TORONTO Shows
Posted by Impaq, Mon Sep-25-06 02:58 AM
Im sorry im gonna have to disagree with you little bredren, Rakim KILLED that shit. I was up at the front and was able to hear it all and he put on a great show IMO. The energy was there and a connection with the audience was there. What did you want him to do jump off stage and shit?
39733, I'm with you...
Posted by djrav, Mon Sep-25-06 10:59 AM
I think Ra did a pretty damn good job, all things considered. I mean, Phoneix ain't exactly the greatest venue in terms of sound quality, and it was pretty damn shitty how so few showed up for the greatest MC ever. I mean, damn...dude hasn't been here, in how long?? And that place was half empty! Maybe that had something to do with why the energy didn't seem right...but when all was said and done, the show was money well spent in my opinion.

November 16th at the Phoenix is Roy Ayers and the Original Superstars Of Jazz Fusion (dorkiest name for a seriously funky band I've ever heard!). Roy's gig at the Mod Club last year was life changing.

November 17th/18th at Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls-AL FUCKING GREEN! Shit's sold out, but I'm hoping they'll put a ticket or two back on sale that I can cop. That would be ridiculous. Dude can still sing, too.

I'm also going to Bob Dylan this Tuesday (my birthday), Los Lobos this Friday and probably Sloan on the 30th!
39740, what happened t.o./no comments on stones throw?
Posted by that girl, Mon Nov-06-06 09:25 PM
but you all NEED to check for easy star all-stars.

they put out radiodread which is reggae/dub covers of radiohead songs, but they also have 'dub side of the moon' which covers dark side of the moon by pink floyd. it is seriously bananas! if they play stuff from dub side of the moon that night, it'll be so dope.

so SKIPPED EPMD

get to the door after waiting in this horrid weather
on the door:
Redman and Raekwon will not be here tonight

oh, great. We ask the doorman who's there. Make the decision that EPMD and Smiff n Wessun together for $50 isn't bad

"Smiff n Wessun are on a plane right now on there way here. they'll be here soon"

I dunno bout y'all, but I just cracked up when dude told me that. Plane from NY to Toronto?? And it was 8:45pm and show starts at 9
and you gonna tell me they're on a plane?

Either way, options were
1) see EPMD (which i've been dying to see since i got into hip hop)
2) Save the MUCH NEEDED $50/ticket and get the refund.

I think what really did it was i was weary about how long their set was going to be, plus i have exams next week, plus assignments due, etc. etc.

i stick by my decision
but either way, still not impressed
if anybody chose to see them instead of the money
post how it was

Stolen post from Hiphopcanada.com

"**LONG READ**

Well tonight was the Rock The Bells show here @ Kool Haus it was suppose feature headliners EPMD. Also on the bill was Redman, Keith Murray, Smif N Wessun, Supernatural, DJ Cool & Raekwon.

Man after tonight I have to say people in the U.S. have it way too good when it comes to shows and are very lucky.

So on Sunday word got out that Keith Murray withdrew from the show, then late this afternoon word got out to my people that were suppose to interview Raekwon that he wasn't allowed across the border he left Vermont where he had his last show last night and when he tried to enter was refused to get in. He tried to rush back to Manhattan to have his lawyers work shit out and hopefully get back in time for the show but that wasn't happening.

At this point most of the general public doesn't know about RAE not being there, next about an hour before the show security was letting people know REDMAN also was a victim to his criminal record so wasn't allowed access across the border.

NOW TO THE CONCERT.

Wack opening acts, DJ Cool was terrible, Supernatural was actually good and had the crowd buzzing and hype freestyling over "Go", "The Food" & "I'm A Hustla".

TIME FOR EPMD RIGHT?

So DJ Scratch is setting up while a local DJ (P-Plus) is spinning during intermission, after he's done there's basically no music nothing playing and some host just speaking. The crowd gets restless since for about 30 mins nothing is going on, booing is going on heavy AND THEN...........some people started throwing bottles @ DJ SCRATCH one of them landed on his Serato & Mac and messed up his shit.

He was soaked and his shit was fucked up, DJ Cool tried to calm the crowd down and Scratch even interrupted and was telling dudes to meet him at the side so he can show dudes "How NY does it" when dudes act up. Cats continue to boo and Scratch leaves the stage and this point MORE BOTTLES are thrown on stage at this point Kardinal Offishall comes out like 15 mins later and tells the crowd this is not how Toronto is and should rep properly.

These dudes didn't have to come out and still did even though 75% of the acts couldn't get across the border he hypes up the crowd and EPMD comes out. At this point ERICK SERMON tells the crowd they should fuck up dudes that threw shit at their DJ but they will continue with the show and can't let some idiots mess that up.

So now DJ Scratch's setup was all messed up so they go the 2 local DJ's (P-Plus & Startin' From Scratch) to get whatever EPMD instrumentals that they had on them which was about 4 tracks so EMPD did 4 tracks and at the end ERICK basically said again whoever did shit to his DJ to meet him and said PEACE.

Dudes left my crew outside the venue saw them get into their vans and they actually gave us props since we were supporting what they were doing.

:{ I'm just sick and tired of the Government continuing this nonsense when it comes to hip hop artists AND also to whoever messed up Scratch's shit obviously people didn't appreciate shit.

Throwing shit @ DJ SCRATCH?!??! c'mon in the DJ/Production that's basically on the level of throwing shit at Nas, Jay, Rakim type thing."

Here's the 4 tracks

39750, hold up....
Posted by sayword, Mon Dec-11-06 05:15 PM
they aren't giving you back your money or nothing?

man i was there in line, mad early too, and the security guard casually walks by and says "it's only epmd!"...

i started getting beligerent at this point (pre-drinking at my house will do that) going off on these cats....but i cooled off and thought, maybe i should go talk to these dudes, i asked and they said that it was just gonna be epmd and you can get your money back in two weeks from point of purchase....

i asked can we still see the show and get our money back....he looked at me like i was crazy, and i knew it, but had to try....

as i was walking away from the kool haus, i wanted to start a riot in the line about this bullshit....how the fuck are not gonna holla at the fans when they know 90% of their acts are not there?

i can't believe all that shit went down inside - that ain't cool at all - but that's what's gonna happen when you leave that many people stranded outside in the cold (really cold that night)...

who was involved in bringing this show to toronto? everyone on the bill (excluding the artists of course) needs to be boycotted....

Ok
I've e-mailed ticketmaster twice
and no response
so I finally called them and got info

NOTE: YOU STILL NEED YOUR TICKET (obviously)
This is for people who purchased via ticketmaster.ca or by phone. If you bought from an outlet, go back there and get your refund

Options:
1) Take the tickets to the Rogers Centre, Gate 7 and get the refund processed right there.
2) Mail via REGISTERED mail (it's safer) to the head office:

Toronto Head Office
Attn: Ticketmaster Customer Service Department
1 Blue Jays Way
Suite 3900
Toronto, Ontario
M5V 1J3

Write "Void" on the ticket
include a letter saying a refund was offered, along with your contact info and your order number. Ask them to contact you with the refund number to ensure everything is being processed smoothly.

For those that want to contact the promoter (Dreamchaser):

veronica@guerillaunion.com
agreenberg@msopr.com
shazila@msopr.com

or

MSO - (818) 380-0400

If anybody went to this disgrace of a show, i still think you should contact and see what you can get.
After all, $52 for 4 songs? That ain't right.

Hope that helps somebody

Just be ready to move to the side of the stage if you wanna dance, because the Rama crowd is the lamest fucking bunch of white suburbanites!
