i'm tired of standing at concerts.

last time i went to the amphitheater, i saw the roots, common, gangstarr, kweli, jurassic 5, steve harvey, WC, raphael saadiq, and i think one more act i can't remember. all performing. all but gangstarr with a band (either the roots or their own), and dj premier was dope. even saw scratch and rahzel do their lightsaber battle.

i hope this sells out, because once the amphitheater is full, it's a beautiful venue. i'd pay whatever price to see the roots perform in places like the gibson amphitheater more often. not a fan of akon, but i'm looking forward to seeing jill perform (1st time i'll see her perform more than just you got me). also, i heard the lupe live set that was put up here a month or so ago, and he sounded amazing live. on second thought, i did like akon on that song he did with india arie.

I wonder what the setup is going to be like. The set time says that Akon goes on from 8:15-8:40 and the Roots, Jill Scott & Lupe go on from 9pm-11:30. That wouuld seem to suggest that they will all be on stage together at the same time. No disrespect but I don't want Lupe & jill cockblocking my quality Roots time dammit.
38101, That makes perfect sense to me.
Posted by Ryan M, Sat Feb-10-07 05:34 PM
I once saw Common and The Roots do their show together...and it was awesome. I mean, you have Jill/The Roots together to do You Got Me and (HOPEFULLY!!!) Complexity. Then you have Jill and Lupe together to do Daydreamin...and you know they're gonna do some stuff...so you might as well throw em all out there together and see what happens.

Plus if they really are combining their sets, it'll be like the Okayplayer tour, and we know ?uest doesn't throw a show together - it'll be tight.

We were in Section 8, row H...not terribly far from you, but I saw a couple in front of us taking pictures and presumably video. I'm sure the footage will be online in a few days...I totally gave up taking pictures cause my camera phone is whatever and I knew there'd be better ones soon.

Amazing show though.

What girls were fighting? I think I heard it as I was leaving...a couple guys were about to get into it when we were leaving. They were right by the exit, almost at the Universal ticket windows and they were shoving each other talking about "Wanna take this outside?!" (I'm like, yo...you're outside...and it's sprinking, in case you forgot). Hilarity probably ensued...and I heard people going, "OOOOH!!!" once we were out of sight of the probable fight.

38110, This show was like a mindblowing movie.
Posted by Ryan M, Sun Feb-11-07 04:14 AM
It hits you later how truly amazing it was. First, Akon was a good opener. He sounded clean, was brief, and did his thing. I enjoyed his set.

But the main event...well, let's see:

(SPOILERS to follow)

The Roots came in like they did at the RCMH show...with a full horn section, marching from the back of the venue. When they took the stage, they opened with Game Theory, and from there played Star, Proceed, Mellow My Man, Act Too, Long Time, and some others. The covers portion of the show was BEYOND hot...easily the best I've seen them do (and this will be show #9 for me, so I've certainly seen them do their share of Hip Hop 101). I'll try to remember all the covers done:

Hip Hop Is Dead
Made You Look
Award Tour
Get By (WITH Kweli...brought the place to their feet)
METHOD Man
Shimmy Shimmy Ya
It's Goin Down
Sexyback
Lost Ones
That's That
The traditional closing of Planet Rock into Push It

There were more, but I can't remember them. Regardless, hot.

Then Lupe came out to The Roots playing I Gotcha. RIDICULOUS, this guy. So much energy, and having the live band definitely fueled the show. Even though they were only there for the opener, he certainly felt it and it added a lot. Lupe then played:

Touch The Sky
Sunshine
Kick, Push
American Terrorist

And then out came Jilly From Philly who did Daydreamin with him, and then into her set. Jill's great, don't get me wrong, but I don't know much of her stuff. She did do The Way though. She's got a whole lot of presence and she's just so goddamn confident it's infectious. Toward the end of her set, you heard the familiar percussion of the $2 Dollar Bill/Block Party You Got Me...Black Thought then came out and went on with it.

AMAZING. Ridiculous. I'm so glad I've now seen that version live. From there, The Roots went into The Next Movement, did some soloish stuff and bounced. You knew they were coming back for the encore...so they did, and killed a version of Roxanne that ?uesto would probably be rejected from American Idol with, but it was still awesome :) From there, they did The Seed and a just insane closing song that you've gotta see to truly appreciate. In a Soul Train line to close out the show, we got a brief glimpse of Mr. Dave Chappelle and then they were gone.

Just like that...the show I've been waiting for for months is over with, but I couldn't be happier. The lowlights were not enough stuff from Game Theory (though I understand the abbreviated set), no real J Dilla tribute (I think we were all hoping for one), and not long enough (nothing you could do). The surprise of the night was Lupe for me...but lord did The Roots kill it. See this show...they truly haven't done anything like this before.

The Roots were amazing as usual....the new stuff was tight.

Did waste time getting there for Akon and sat during Lupe.....I think I offended the girl next to me when I sat down. Maybe it was his sister.

I had from row pit just off left center. It was great.

Did not make it out to the Key Club because ot was raining and I am supposed to go to the Grammys today.

38119, how many people does gibson hold??? MY REVIEW INSIDE
Posted by justin_scott, Sun Feb-11-07 02:55 PM
looked like a damn near sell out, if not complete sell out. best venue i've ever seen the roots perform at. unfortunately, they only do gibson once every few years.

everyone i saw was having a great time. sound was excellent. black thought is always dope live, but this time he was far more interactive with the crowd, talking to a few, dancing, etc. kamal was excellent. i don't wanna sound like a hater, but normally his solo is ok, and this time it was excellent. i loved the keyboard/guitar thing he had. jeff bradshaw (sp?) and his horn section was wonderful. MORE OF THAT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

kweli was a great surprise, and lupe fiasco is as hyper and fun live as i've seen him on youtube. best money i've spent in a while. the masters of war cover was great. quest, even though everyone sat during that period, trust, people were enjoying themselves. shit sounded excellent. i was wondering if you were gonna do a soul train line since they're running older episodes lately.

i repeat my prior statement that i would pay $100 a ticket any day to see the roots at gibson again. PLEASE COME BACK TO THAT VENUE (plus it's close to home)

ONLY PROBLEMS (COMPLETELY MINOR, not the roots fault)

sometimes the lighting was blinding and you couldn't see the stage, but it was mostly temporary. obviously not the roots fault, but fyi. also, the "S" on the roots banner above the stage kept going out. lol
38120, Great show...glad I missed Akon
Posted by sheed, Sun Feb-11-07 03:55 PM
Energy was great...the vibe chill.

Ate at Roscoe's on Sunset afterwards and ran into Lupe.

cool night.
38121, ... i got there late =(
Posted by bigLi, Sun Feb-11-07 08:30 PM
i thought for sure, that with all the acts on the bill, that the roots would not go on before 10:30. so i take my time getting to gibson, and they're already on you got me. dammmmmmmmit. at least what i did see was all stuff i hadn't seen live before, and it was all dope.

i don't want to spoil anything, but the james brown section was easily the most fun i've seen black thought have with the crowd and the band... and the dance moves! the horn section choreography was on point too, ha. that plus the soul train line...classic moments. tuba gooding jr was rockin it.

glad i finally got to see that version of you got me, shit was live. it don't feel right sounded real good with the horns. the seed was dope with the alternate versions and the guest bass player (some random woman from the crowd kidnapped hub).

as for the gripes.... as great as the gibson amphitheatre is, with the superb sound and lighting... the intensity that black thought and the band as a whole provides feels much greater in a smaller venue. although i'm sure this is true for any good live act, i think i feel it a little more with the roots since i've seen them at the house of blues so many times. nevertheless it was dope to see so many people rockin at the same time, especially for the roots.

one last thing, y'all never fool anyone when y'all take a break before doing the encore. i'm starting to get tired of that. it's like, we know your coming back, just keep playing. i can understand that it's an effective way to take a break, go to the bathroom, get some water or whatever. and the crowd does get into it to try to get it started again. but at least do a better job of foolin folks or something, rather then stopping on a dime and saying aiight good night folks.
