Common Honors J. Dilla on New Album

Posted Feb 23rd 2007 3:52PM by Steve Baltin

Common's new album, 'Finding Forever,' due in May, finds production from Kanye West and Will.I.Am, among others, but it's a track from the late J. Dilla, called 'So Far to Go' which also features D'Angelo, that means the most to the rapper.

"That dude affected my life and music in such a positive way. He was one of the greatest musicians," Common says of Dilla, who was also his one-time roommate. "When we went to the burial, I was looking at all the artists that were around -- A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock, all these great musicians. J.D. innovated hip-hop and it's the quiet way that he did it. Many people don't know the influence he had on so many producers. But from Pharrell to Kanye, they have all said, 'This dude is one of my favorites.'"
37696, i hope theres more Dilla tracks than just the one

exactly what i was thinking...

also, i HATE when lazy/stupid journalists call him "J.D." instead of Jay Dee. i seriously doubt common had anything to do w/ that error, considering.
37701, this track was on The Shinning
Posted by msclman99, Mon Feb-26-07 07:20 PM
and i believe it was recorded a loooong time ago. i recall a post from quest where he mentioned something about it...
37702, yea it was orignally the remix to GO
Posted by Menphyel7, Mon Feb-26-07 09:59 PM
but the shit sounded so different and was so banging they said they would keep it for the next album. Then I guess Riggins got it for the shinning..

but I'll like to see more people hear this song. Everyone I play it for loves it and be like "oh shit htat's D'angelo where he been lol"

Yea this song is beautiful and Bye is still my favorite donut so its good to see them use that beat.

37703, dont get me wrong
Posted by msclman99, Tue Feb-27-07 07:24 PM
the song was dope
37704, wow. thats some good info right there.

37705, if will.i.am don't give com his hardest beats..
Posted by Dirty Dansk, Tue Feb-27-07 04:26 AM
it's not a good look
The 'I have dream' joint was on some wannabe LWFC ish - very corny..
and I am a huge common fan - but I try to forget he ever did that cut..

37706, i have a dream was a good beat, as far as i´m concerned
Posted by prophet j, Wed Feb-28-07 05:41 AM
i don´t think the track was particularly corny, but if you did, it doesn´t have to do with the instrumental aspect.
37707, I disagree
Posted by chief1284, Wed Feb-28-07 09:05 AM
I think the beat was mad corny. I mean I hate tracks that use such obvious stereotypical samples. And it was just boring as hell. One of Common's low points no doubt. Really he can do so much better than waste his time with Will.I.Am (who seems to be getting inexplicable love on these boards these days). I don't care what anyone says, the guy sold his soul and is boring as hell these days (not that he was ever exactly groundbreaking).

That Will.I.am song/beat (I have a dream) was corny, even amateurish sounding.

37711, damn, this is kind of bad news...
Posted by ju1ce43, Tue Feb-27-07 08:19 AM
you would like to hear something new from common on an album released probably a year after the shining. I'd rather hear him on anything else from dilla. and yes, if this is the only dilla beat on FF, then this is really bad news.
37712, Yup... remember when AFKAP claimed that wasn't true?
Posted by AquamansWrath, Tue Feb-27-07 01:02 PM
yet someone else... who plucked his card.

Stop complaining. Is the track hot? I think we can all agree that it is. Get over it and support your man.
37715, RE: What's wrong with y'all?
Posted by The_Light, Tue Feb-27-07 02:46 PM
for real man... that tracks is off the hook and it deserves to be played on a more commercial level. it will get more exposure. Still tho I would like to hear some new dillas joints on the album
37716, RE: What's wrong with y'all?
Posted by HighVoltage, Tue Feb-27-07 03:39 PM
well Be was only like 11 tracks or so.

i hope this album is longer, but if it the same legnth, id much rather hear a new song on there. however, if this is a much longer album, i have no problem with them including the song on it.
37717, motherfuckers skip the shit. jesus.

hope it becomes a single...i wouldn't mind hearing that song as much as i hear some of the garbage joints gettting run right now. besides, it might encourage D to speed up his comeback...

on that note, somebody tell snoop to release 'imagine' as a single...
___

wow. i still post on message boards. lol.
37719, co-sign on "imagine"...i still bump that regularly.

Why is an artist who released soul food like "Like Water For Chocolate" messing around with half-assed beat makers like Kanye and Will.I.Am?
Kanye is just a Wanna-be and he will always be nothing but that.
Yes, he did make his name shine by making a lot of white ladies (and shamefully, also some young brothers and sisters,) shake their booty to his so-called-soulful beats, but does that really make him deserve all the props?
Shit that he did on BE literally made me sick because he was TRYING HARD to sound like something or someone he is not.
All that fake emotions and nothing from the heart..
And Will.I.Am, is one of the very reasons behind the "whiteification" of black music.
Don't even start with the BBE shit that he did from way back.
Just a glimpse of this clown, puppet dancing on MTV with Fergie and his other fellow friends is enough to make me think; 'this cat is out of his Goddamn mindĄŻ.
And now he shouts "Hip-Hop is dead" with Nas?
How ironic is that?

"If he lose his soul, what can a nigga gain?" - Common on "Dooinit" from "Like Water For Chocolate"
37721, i feel u william is fuckin wack

Be's production was ill. period. Real people, Be, go, the food.....

Kanye did his thing. If you wanna speak on your personal issues with the man, do that, but Be's production was L I V E....
37725, i agree
Posted by krayzeeboi38, Thu Mar-01-07 01:14 PM
A lot of kanye's other production was decent, but he was on top of his game on BE
