the beat can stand alone, that is you can sit and listen to the beat and not get bored
the words have to strike you and be poignant
not to mention they must complement the beat perfectly

a classic must also be universal, if we're talking hip hop it should appeal to hip hop fans of all persuasions and tastes
a song that every hip hop fan can relate to and knows
