Bonnaroo: Late Night Led Zep Medleys and Passed-out Fans
By Jon Pareles

MANCHESTER, TENN.–

Bonnaroo’s late nights are bewildering. After the headline set, the mid-level jam bands vamp into the night. The same fields where I’ve been wandering all day are now unevenly lighted and populated by more or less vertical dancers, seated groups and sacked-out people who peaked too early to get back to their campgrounds. It’s a tribute to the courtesy of Bonnaroo’s audience that more people don’t wake up with footprints on them.

And then there are the crowds, like the one I’m now standing in at the Other Tent for Superjam: Ahmir (?uestlove) Thompson from the Roots on drums, Ben Harper on slide guitar and none other than John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin on bass. One of the loudest roars all day went up when they started a Zep medley with a recognizable “Dazed and Confused.” But replacing Robert Plant and Jimmy Page with Mr. Harper changes things toward wah-wah and rootsy slide parts, while Mr. Jones is more than willing to toy with his old parts. The trio veered toward a P-Funk riff.

Mr. Thompson’s snappy drumming, in rock and funk, has partly atoned for the Roots’ earlier set. Instead of playing songs from the Roots’ long album catalog, they filibustered: first with an overextended version of their remake of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War”–the beginning is sung to the tune of “The Star-Spangled Banner”–and then with Mr. Thompson singing “Roxanne.” Not a snippet or a hip-hop revision, but the whole song. They could have left that to the Police tomorrow–or, actually, later today.
