so if we did a lackluster show yall would post about it right?
but we gave bris a damn near 6 hour religious experience tween the show and after party and not ONE report?

damn.

this is why i be cutting songs and shit---
why go through a 3 hour show on 2 hours sleep and 8 cans of red bull and for what?

3 hours show, got damn! Where are the aussieplayers? Riq drank about 3 bulls on stage last time i saw u guys.
35856, last night was INCREDIBLE...
Posted by deja_brew, Sat Jul-30-05 03:09 AM
thankyou questo and everyone involved
for putting on a dope show.
everything from riq doing the robot,
your solo and everything in between was amazing.

the feeling i got at last nights show was indescribable.
riq did his thing on the mic
as well as kamal, hub and kirk with their solos.
and maimouna is BEAUTIFUL.

it hardly felt like 3 hours had gone by.
i didn't make it to the rev
but i'll definitely catch u spinning
the next time y'all are up here again,
which i hope will be soon.

best of luck with the rest of your shows in Oz.

peace

Im so hyped for the melbourne show. I have been thinking about it for months. Even travelling from interstate to see this, i have but one request........THE WATER!!
This is the track, the energy, its hard to describe what i feel when i hear this. If only i could hear it live.

Please grant my wish..... :-)

35858, should have gone last time then

I posted this up on the tour thread... here it is again man!
(I wrote ithis at like 4am Brisbane time)
______________________________________________________________

I’ve been a big fan of The Roots for a long time and visited this site intermittently but at the behest of Ahmir/?uestlove I’ve finally joined the okayplayer forums after witnessing my first live show from The Roots (at The Arena in Brisbane, Australia – Fri. Jul. 29) and having the honour and privilege to meet ?uestlove, Black Thought, Hub and Kirk at the after-party (The Rev).

I’ve got to say that seeing The Roots live was a hell of a experience that blew me away – it wasn’t just getting to see them live but also hear the re-arranged interpretations of their classic joints (a sneak peak at some new shit) and witness the high level of musicianship on show.

The cherry on top no doubt had to be meeting ?uestlove, Black Thought, Hub and Kirk - who were the most open, approachable and just straight friendly entertainers I’ve met to date.

I can’t wait to see The Roots live in Australia again so we can knock back another round of tequila’s after the show! Ahmir, if you’re reading this (by some remote chance), thanks for putting down a dope show and after-party, keeping making that classic shit!

Big ups to the legendary Roots crew, who displayed in Brisbane why they are acclaimed as one of the world’s best live acts and the most respected band (not group) in Hip-Hop!

Look forward to checking that disc you gave Danilo too… no D' tho' :(
(just jokes man - appreciate you blessing us with the hook up!)

Peace + thank-you… thaBEAST a.k.a. Khyam Baines (On Point)
______________________________________________________________

Oh yeah, I was remiss in not mentioning Tariq and Maimouna were absolute killer on stage - Tariq of course was better than expected and Maimouna was a true surprise and was nice with the mic when she spat a few bars!

I really enjoyed the after-party set, taking people to school with the original breaks preceding the more contemporary joints that sampled them. heard you got cut short on the last joint tho'...

?uest man, you and THE ROOTS crew are more than welcome back in Bris Vegas ANY time!
35860, Well...
Posted by PD, Sat Jul-30-05 09:17 AM
...after the show we went to the Rev and hung around for your entire set, got home at 6, slept for an hour and then worked all day. So yea, I was kinda tired.

My thoughts on the show? Just "wow." Easily the best gig I've been to. So if you were all tired then I didn't notice, and neither did anyone else at the venue.

The set @ the Rev was a refreshing experience for a club/bar and I wish there was a venue here that gave the DJs the freedom to drop those sort of tracks for hours on end. A big "boo hiss" to management for cutting it short though- that was some BS.

All in all it was one hell of a way to end the week; the interview (much respect for that, would've loved to just listen to stories, and those tracks you played us for the whole afternoon), great gig, and a "chill" (for lack of a better word) DJ set afterwards.

The best I can do is say thanks for showing me in person the reason why I own every Roots CD and do nothing but speak highly of yourself and the rest of the group.

-Peter

J Macloed... not like that at all man - myself and frineds are involved with media in Brisbane and have acted as hosts to various acts that come through.

from time to time we have the opportunity to grasp an insight into a world we only get to see from a great distance and really appreciate being able to learn.

i've been to, in and around Sydney an assload of times. going twice in the coming months, too. apart from the city itself? the place stinks.

Melbourne is way too cool for ya'll anyway. ask anyone, Melbourne is more laid back, relaxed and has approachable n friendly people. everytime i've been to Sydney and walked down the street, everyone, EVERYone, fucking stares at me. like not just passing glances, full on stares. its like they can smell ur not from around there. and a couple times i've had cop cars just following me down the street all the way bak to my hotel. probly cos i had a bit of growth on my face.

not a very nice place at all, Sydney.

Sydney is the city, but it depends where you chill. Actually if I had to pick my two favourite cities, i'd actually say Byron Bay and Port Douglas, but outta the big cities, Sydney murders melbourne. Melbourne is just pretentious. LOL. Jokes, don't murder mes, but you must aspire to be like us a bit, come on admit it. LOL. I wonder what The Roots think.

35876, ye, see i like Sydney city

i've just gotten up

in short, last night's show was ****** out of *****

and you rocked the basement (i'm glad the afterparty was there this time, rather than the candy's apartment of last time)

once again i'm moved to request that you guys have an interlude (on game theory?) where you and riq do the two turntables and a microphone thing

thanks again, Q! bring on tomorrow night!

35921, thanks for a great show (Enmore, Sydney)
Posted by topaz, Sun Jul-31-05 07:42 AM
i'm happy you guys covered every album (except Organix (?)), thanks for doing Proceed, What They Do (wish it was the whole thing tho), The Ultimate & Ain't Sayin Nothin New

the Apache interlude was great, as well as I Ain't No Joke (thought it was Grindin at first, silly me), and Jungle Boogie etc etc

all the solos were entertaining, although i thought they were just a tad too long (like your first Sydney show in 03), maybe you guys could've squeezed in another song or two instead...but hey, you guys looked like you were having fun out there, so what do i know

ooh that Get By/Shimmy Shimmy/Method Man/NY State of Mind etc medley was cool

was disappointed at the absence of Guns Are Drawn, Quills and Water tho (since they're some of the best 'newer' songs imo)...glad to hear the original Thought@Work, as well as Melting Pot

anyway, thanks for coming down once again, looking forward to next time

EDIT: Maimouna doing Eve/Jean Grae verses = very nice surprise

Brisbane??? Where's that again???

Sydney has the best beaches in the country and the landmarks and depending where you are some of the best people. Brisbane, hahaha, come on who are you trying to fool. Cme on, don't lie to a fellow Okayplayer.

LOL!!!Nuh Byrnon Bay is the place to be. All green(pun intended), good people, good music, good beaches, good women. New South Wales should just become a country of it's own, as Byron Bay and Sydney are both part of the NSW.

melbourne wins. the weather is something you can stand when you have the best shopping, the best eating and the best roads in australia. sydney DEFINATELY fails on those three points, brisbane only passes on the shopping part.

i can't love melbourne enough.

thought, granted, newcastle has all the most attractive women in australia put into one town.

I would have no complaints. lol. But yeah I know what you mean, especially about the solos, they are very important for those who don't know The Roots. For my sister who didn't know them that was her favourite part of the show, me personally I loved it all. I thought it was flawless, just wish I could have heard "Step Into the Realm", "Respond/React"and "Good Music", but it would be unrealistic for that too happen.

Peace, thanks for a great show.
35929, think of it like this
Posted by 15, Sun Jul-31-05 04:29 PM
8 records.
2 hours worth of material

anything AFTER that is a treat (the half hour solos)

there are people there who dont know ish about the songs

as in i doubt your experience woulda been all that different if we did a "roots" song.

80% of people at our shows dont even own 2 records. so id rather be more effective and demonstrate why we are the shit...as opposed to just throwing songs out there for a redundant reason.

i know as a roots fan you are like "i wanna hear my favs.."

but the solos are if not MORE important that any roots song.
cause at the end of the day?

mofos who go to roots shows can care less about the songs more than "the experience" of the show.

(you disagree)

yes.

cats will talk about hub solo more than they will "they did CONCERTO! YAY!"

how its been for 13 years.

NOW

if our presence changed on tv and radio...

then of course the "songs" would take priority.

but who's to say when we are the only standard for this type of show?
35930, RE: think of it like this

and unique. Its great to c how y'all spin different stuff past and present. Keeping it fresh everytime with the solos and mixing up the songs is why y'all will always have an audience. I've never been to two roots shows that were the same and never had one that left me wanting, i always bring people who haven't been introduced to the group and they get their mind blown EVERY time, well that usually happens to me too. Come back to DC! haha

FOR REAL!!! I am blessed enough to now have seen the Roots 3 times live in concert, twice in Europe and now in my newly adopted hometown Adelaide. The previous shows were a 10 outta 10, this show in Adelaide was 11 outta 10!!! It was by far the best concert I have seen of any artist or group. And I have seen a few great shows, like the Wu Tang, Gang Starr etc. The beauty of yr shows is that you guys have a completely different line up each time. That's why I could go to a Roots show 25 times and still be amazed by yr solos.

Oh yeah, ?uest, thanks for sharing yr Red Bull with me. I was hoping to catch one of yr drumsticks but the Red Bull proved much more useful later in this evening. Only downfall of the evening was this dipshit who commented on my Okayplayer Hoody at the concert, probably not knowing what it was. What a f_____ joke, go to a Roots concert and not even knowing what Okayplayer is......

Anyway, can't wait to catch you guys in concert again soon!! (If I could, I'd fly to Sydney 2 catch one of yr other shows there)

PS: I was hoping you guys would do an ODB tribute, just like you did in Amsterdam in May 2003 for Jam Master Jay. You certainly paid respect to Ason by rocking Shimmy Shimmy ya!! Much respect!!
35935, ?uestlove just yelled at me :~(

of course, what you said made perfect sense, so i'll shut up now, keep doing what you do best

(plus this thread is giving me the creeps...i can see some of you are BIG fans, but damn!)

again, thanks for a GREAT show! just what i needed before re-entering hell, aka university life....

"The Roots: an important part of your garden? Or a legendary US hip-hop band?

You're going garden?

Then it's possible you weren't at the Arena in the Valley on Friday night to see what we believe was the best gig in Brisbane so far this year. Yes, major call. Major band."

It is good to see one positive review! The fool that reviewed the show for Rave magazine seemed to not even have gone! He listed four songs that were not played, managed to call Riq 'Black Thunder' (I'm serious) and say that the performance was "nondescript".... I don't know what to say to that one.
35939, 'black thunder'???

Before I start I just want to say...?uestlove, Hub, Kamal, Captain Kirk and Knuckles...thank you for opening up my mind. You made me want to pick up an instrument again and start playin music the old fashioned way. Watchin you guys on stage was magic. Blackthought and kate (sorry if I got your name wrong) I can't rap or sing for crap, but you guys were off the hook and I know my limitations.

First and foremost thank you and big ups to the Roots for putting in all the hard work for their tour here in Sydney. I listened in to ?uestlove's interview on triple J on Monday night and its astounding how they can do so much travelling and still get up on that stage and rock the best show I've ever seen.

I've gotta admit, when the Roots performed at the Hordern Pavilion (which is a crap venue) with J5, I left the gig somewhat a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong I really appreciated seeing the roots perform for the first time in Sydney, but having heard so much about how good the roots were live, I just expected a little more. Its cool tho, when you perform at a festival or are sharing the stage with another group, I guess not everyone is there to see you...

But damn this time around, I have to say the roots totally blew me away. I won't go into the set list and what not.. thats been pretty much covered by previous posts.... okay just one thing the re-arangement of the seed 2.0 caught me by surprise. Would kill to see Cody Chestnut and the roots perform that song together (no disrespect cap kirk).

I brought along a friend of mine who has been a big roots fan for a long time. However having grown up in indonesia where hip hop is at its infancy stage and has already been corupted by MTV, he had never seen a hip hop concert of such magnitude and by artists held in such high esteem. This was pretty much his first real hip hop show even though he fell inlove with hip hop a long time ago. Watching him seeing the roots for the first time on stage was almost as good as watchin the concert itself. He was in total awe. After the concert he had to run off to work where he washes taxi's in the dead of night. He called me at 3 in the morning, the album things fall apart blaring in the background, expressing to me that even tho he had to wash taxis in the fuckin cold this was the greatest day of his life.

I had the chance in 2003 to watch ?uestlove perform a dj set at the basement night club. I remember the night distinctly.. oct 11. I was so amped to watch ? in such a intimate venue. We were almost there when my best friends baby momma rang to let us know that she had gone into labour and was expecting any minute. I was both shattered and excited...but shattered kicked in when friends told me that the set was 6 hours of the most blissful music. Never the less I had a new baby nephew. So I was so happy to finally get to see ?uestlove perform another set at the basement this year and I was not going to let anything get in the way. How ? got to the venue so quickly I have no idea.. he arrived before me and I left straight after the concert. I haven't danced that much in a long time. Right till the end of the set. Thank you soooooo much Ahmir. I know you were hella tired and your band had already left to the hotel. You put in alot of work as the spokesman for the band and from a fans perspective I really appreciate the time you give to ppl who love your music. ?uestlove really summed it up when at the end of the night, at about 5 in the morning he let us take a photo with him...a friend of mine remarked "?uestlove you're a genius!!" with which he replied "I ain't no genius, Im just a hard worker."

For real... all the hard work is much loved and appreciated by me thats for sure.

peace.
rick
ps. I hear rumours of 2 Okayplayer artists performing in Aus Jan 2006....yeaaaaaaahhhhhhh.....

>this is why i be cutting songs and shit---

?uest,

the only other experience that compared to your Brisbane show and after party was Prince's last tour. Bar none your show was the most electrifying thing I have seen since Mr.Nelson came to town (which was almost 2 years ago).

From the Jimmy Castor Bunch / Incredible Bongo Band medley to "What They Do" to the instrumental solos and back to end of show medley, the show was unbelieveable. Words really do fail to capture the intensity of the show. I think you guys stopped for a grand total of one time when you walked off stage! Thats crazy.

The after party set you did at The Rev WAS like a religious experience. Although I don't think many in the room appreciated what you were trying to do. It was truly an education and one of the most inspired sets I have heard any DJ perform. I have to say though.. one thing I noticed was an absence of any of the old school electro. I was hanging for some Afrika Bambaataa or Newcleus.. I know you dropped Whodini (which was awesome to hear on a loud system). I just thought with Missy's new single as well as Ciara's success with "1,2, Step" you would have dropped some "Cybertron" or "Planet Rock".

Anyways,.. oh, the Dwele at the beginning of the set was also a nice touch btw.

I hope the rest of the tour has gone well and you've finally been able to get some proper sleep. Too many of those enrgy drinks can't be good for you :)

All the best with the rest of the tour.

/D

P.S. Not sure if you saw the link on the other thread, but the interview you did with us (Blackbeat) is now up if you want to hear it: www.blackbeat.com.au

P.P.S. As some food for thought, I'm not sure who handled the management of your afterparty gigs, but there were a lot of better options for your set. If you ever are back in OZ/Brisbane please hit us up with an email (danilo@blackbeat.com.au). I would be happy to point you in a more appropriate direction for a ?uestlove afterparty.

I'm looking forward to seeing the show in melbourne tommorow, also looking forward 2 your set at honky tonks. I caught the set at Prince o Wales 2003 and it was great night still enjoying it.
Problem is Honky Tonks are ball busters when it comes to getting through the door. "Sorry members only"..... a line they have perfected. To which I feel like saying if your going to let my member in how about the rest of my anatomy?

"Why are people so unkind"? Kamaal (Indian Australian Singer big in 70's)Not realy worth checking out, but a damn good question
THE POINT
Can u influence some kindness at the door to create a first come first served everybody welcome vibe? Just thought i'd ask.

P.S been reading the street press found the "5th beatle position" real real funny.
I wonder if clarence would join the tour as the "5th beatle"?
On a more serious note The Roots is Art and it makes me feel alot of ways, just wanted to say thanks for the education cause it's the right thing to do!!!
My manners have even gotten better since listening to the roots......
35943, i was @ Prince o Wales set last yr too. was dope.

and cosignage on the not being too tightassy on the nite. im pretty sure they'll realise that everyone will wanna piece of ?uest's gig that nite, so they HAVE to be lenient.

35944, Melbourne Show rocked

Caught the show in Melbourne last night and Damn it The Roots rocked it like it was 1999. I agree with Danilo only other international act that moved me like that was Prince. Sound was amazing who's the sound team or mixing the band....?

The covers that peppered the show were a crazy compliment to the roots repotoire. RAy Charles and Black Sabbath in the same set.
Oh My!!!!!!!! the reggae groove for break you off had me proclaiming Haile Selassie I is king. I really enjoyed the continuity of the show the contour of the music makes all the difference, and The solo's were placed with precision. fantastic (vol 3)damn quest do you wanna start a rock band? or how bout next move to fuck with everyones heads is the roots rock crew!!! please do it.
I should be shot, P Money...... can't forgot that he primed the crowd to be rocked. Thanks to all involved for a great experience.

Peace
