It is kinda weak, but I don't care. I'm not buying it for the art.

... And every album can't have art like TFA or TTP.

who the fuck is doing blue note esque covers but us?

i think you are a newbie to classic jazz covers from the 50s and 60s

this wasnt no "aaww lemme throw something together at the last minute shit"

it is a DIRECT reference to a classic blue note album cover.

youngins...cant teach em shit

(and dont come back on some "i aint no youngin i know my shit" and then try to explain that you dont think bluenote covers are classic)

game over.

now im not gonna front and pretend like i caught this reference right off the bat, but either way i got to agree that these 2 covers are just not doing it for me

i like all of the other roots covers i've seen- i even have a few 12"s i also dig the okp logo

i like this jazz messengers one that this guy linked to better tho these could be cooler if there was photos of the band on the bottom like this and maybe if when you put them together it was a complete photo

like a from the back photo of the guys on stage in a cool venue (some opera house type features like on come alive) and when you put it together you had the 360 of the whole band

also the color scheme on volume 2 is not doing it for me

its like some thanksgiving shit i would have made in elementary school

still, i love that this is coming out and i definitely plan to cop both. i think that for a project like this the cover isnt necessarily AS important because in a way its for the hardcore fans to just bookend their collection, but in terms of getting actual beginner's hooked it's not nearly eye catching enough + if you're a beginner to the roots you sure as hell wont be getting 60's blue note references

still like i said before i love most of the artwork and design that the roots have on their shit and im a huge fan and i better not have people jump on me for being a hater

want to hear something funny? i remember 58impala's 1st post and a few more of his early one's. why do i remember them??? cause this dude was a major dickrider, like if ?uest had had allowed him to this guy would have relished the opportunity to take up permanent residence in ?uest's boxers and now folks are calling him a major hater.

funny, what a few months on these boards will do to a man lol
34255, dang i even remember how i got from occasionally checking the home page
Posted by 58impala, Mon Nov-07-05 12:40 AM
to posting on these boards, and claiming you remember this dickriding shit since Nov 08th 2004. prove it. yeah the roots are my favorite band, but they aint perfect.
34256, RE: dang i even remember how i got from occasionally checking the home page
Posted by hdub, Fri Nov-11-05 12:39 AM
you only asking for me to prove it cause you know theres no way to

im sure 99% of people on here remember their first post i know i remember mine

why do i remember yours A) just cause im nice like that and B) cause at the time i was still pretty new here (really a member since 6/2/04) and your post was the first where i had been here long enough to say "oh THAT is a newbie"

you were all like "the roots are so amazing the greatest band in the history of music i saw them once and creamed my pants when oh when please jesus will they come to miami and do a show that isnt 21+ god damn you promoters for keeping me from the man i love mr ?uestlove damn you kool cigarettes"

and we both know in our heart of hearts that im telling the truth

you gonna try to say youre not in miami?

that youre not underage?

it nothing to be ashamed about my first post was on some i love the roots seeing them live was amazing thank all of you guys

you just were a little past that line from big fan to dickrider you rode them so hard i remember it a year later

and it funny to me now to see how the board turned you from rider to a bit of a hater

the board seems to be conducive to breeding haters--- ?uest says this shit is like his ant farm-- me i participate a lot on here but i still observe and you my friend have been observed

more proof? your first avy was one of the stock ok shits i think but then you went on quickly to a cuban flag you were riding for a few weeks there and i was watching you
34257, RE: dang i even remember how i got from occasionally checking the home page
Posted by 58impala, Fri Nov-11-05 01:32 AM
>you were all like "the roots are so amazing the greatest band
>in the history of music i saw them once and creamed my pants

umm, ok. the only roots show i have been to was during the summer, now you making shit up. i wasn't even hip to the roots live show until i explored the site some and found out about therootslive.com

>when oh when please jesus will they come to miami and do a
>show that isnt 21+ god damn you promoters for keeping me from
>the man i love mr ?uestlove damn you kool cigarettes"

when did i say damn you kool cigarettes? yeah i do remember making a post about the roots not coming down to south florida as much as they do with other places. however i didnt know anything about the promoters untill ?uest mentioned it

>and we both know in our heart of hearts that im telling the
>truth
>
>you gonna try to say youre not in miami?

yeah im north of miami, but dude it says that in my profile and in my myspace, you aint proving shit.

>that youre not underage?

im 19, as it says on my myspace page

>it nothing to be ashamed about my first post was on some i
>love the roots seeing them live was amazing thank all of you
>guys

think is i dont remember my first post at all, and right now i could care less about it (the post above was a typo)

>you just were a little past that line from big fan to
>dickrider you rode them so hard i remember it a year later

funny, i discovered this site only when i was doing research on the band (typed in theRoots.com and got this) on the band, trying to find out more info on them. casual fan wouldnt even describe me at that point.

>and it funny to me now to see how the board turned you from
>rider to a bit of a hater
>
>the board seems to be conducive to breeding haters--- ?uest
>says this shit is like his ant farm-- me i participate a lot
>on here but i still observe and you my friend have been
>observed

really you need to get a life if you are keeping track of all this okp shit, i barely know whats going on now with okps and ill prolly forget 95% of that in 2 weeks. your claiming to remember shit from november of 2004, thats a year ago.

>more proof? your first avy was one of the stock ok shits i
>think but then you went on quickly to a cuban flag you were
>riding for a few weeks there and i was watching you

ok who didnt have a stock okayAvy for they first started posting. I change avys every week or two, so yeah it was really likely for me to have a cuban flag for an avy since cubans and latinos in general are known to be reppin their flag HARD. pretty easy for you to say that since my myspace link say CUBANKEN right in it.

ok i give you some credit, since no other hip hop group is doing this, but the cover isnt orginal

i know that, look that top post. except this doesnt work as well as the messenger cover. and it is a classic cover for the controversy it caused, but doesnt make the home grown cover that creative

I don't see the similarities between "Homegrown" cover and Blue Note stuff from Fifties and Sixties.

i like simple simple shit.

you seen that logo for 13 years...its simple and classy to me.

i mean sure...we coulda went the GRAFFITI route. or had some logo like the wu tang logo.

but that wu logo is just a 90s thing to me. like if i see it now....i just think.."oh .....93"

not that its a bad thing.

but just what i think.

i chose a very simple font because i wanted some timeless shit. and to me when you see this okayplayer logo 90 years down the line its simplicity will stand the test of time like a tux.

to me this logo serves the purpose for the roots and all of its covers.

the "okay" in bold. that was dope imho ■

34280, ?uest, is this Kenny Gravillis again?
Posted by TotalRequestloveLive, Thu Nov-03-05 06:47 AM
Dude is solid. He's let me down in the past (Neighborhood Watch was dumb, and the inside of EC wasnt too far from corny.) but he's never let me down with Roots shit. (Phreno is going to go down as classic, and TFAs cover was a perfect fit for the album)

Yo if you don't mind me asking, who's idea was it to pair the Gordon Parks photo with the title Like Water for Chocolate? I would love to know the origins of that pairing, because it is.... its brilliant.

But yo I don't get why more people don't fuck with Brent Rollins. I have complete and utter blind faith in his work. I even wrote like a 5 page paper on the man last year. I would love to see a Roots album with the almighty Rollins' hand involved. Let Gravillis do the layout and the art direction, but give Rollin's the cover. His resume is monumental I'm talking- Blackstar, Nia, Blazing Arrow, The Platform, Full Clip and maybe even The Ownerz, and more recently the Maroons shit was rediculous.

Brent Rollins makes covers better than the records... on classic records.

but Kenny G. is dope too.

no offense b.

but ive seen worse.

and with that being said, what diference does it make? is the cover gonna keep you from buying the album? ...if so, then youll be the only loser who didnt buy a dope album because of the album cover.

i think you should have a more constructive reason to not like it, rather than judge it by it's cover sonny.

but thats just me.

34286, well i like this design...
Posted by kay13, Thu Nov-03-05 02:17 PM
as much as i love the covers of TFA, phrenology and tipping point

imo most roots' covers are on point, except the ones of DYWM and IH, i dont really feel these two.

speaking of the homegrown cover. i like the combination of the color and font so much. when i first saw it i was like "this would look awesome if its printed on a t-shirt!"
