On November 15th the Grammy Award-winning group The Roots will release a compilation of their greatest hits, rare b-sides and unreleased tracks on a two disc set entitled Home Grown! Volume 1 & 2: The Beginners Guide To Understanding The Roots.

Each volume not only contains their best songs, but also material pulled directly from the archives of Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson which include exclusive rare remixes and never released tracks and extensive ?uestlove liner notes.

he KNOWS there are diehards on the boards who have Do This Well and other less common joints.

do you REALLY think he left us out for this compilation?

aside from the liner BOOKS (fuck notes) and CD quality versions of these tracks (most of the other rarities werent the best quality), dont put it past him to hide many more never heard gems on there (aside from the ones already listed on the tracklist).

i got a strong feeling that tracklist he gave us aint "complete".

I think ?uest put this together to appeal directly to fans who really know the material. It may say "A Beginners Guide..." but I think its deeper than that. Why would some sudden Roots listener want to get thier hands on rare tracks that they couldn't tell apart from Illadelph of Do You Want More?!?! tracks? Why would some Roots newbie care about pages of ?uest liner notes? That's something that Roots geeks like myself salivate over...lol. I'm psyched about this release for sure.

$30 bucks for linear notes seems a bit overpriced. I mean dammit, that's the price of a fucking HARDBACK BOOK. When I buy an album I want music. Simple as that. And the only thing new I see on this compilation is a few new songs and a bunch of interludes. Yeah... interludes. I'm a Roots fan, but dammit I'm not rich. There is a shitload of amazing albums coming out later this year (new Raekwon, Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Ghostface, OutKast, etc. etc.) and I'd rather spend my money on them. I'll probably borrow the Roots compilations from a friend until I buy it a few months from now.

is that the group could have easily just let geffen put out some peice of shit greatest hits(think ghostface/pharcyde/fugees). it would have taken a lot less effort on their part. but that care/pride for anything that comes with the roots brand stamped on it is very clear in what quest did to shape this product...i respect that. i'll admit i was hoping that it would have some more rarities (crisp version of beatminerz proceed remix!) but i'll be copping. even if it were all just album cuts, i think it would be real nice to hear how quest would mix his own greatest hits. add in those remixes, the few rarities, and all those interludes, not to even mention the liner notes, and i'm pretty excited about this.

Them muhf**fin liner books (20pgs EACH) are worth $10 a piece on their own....and then you get a bonus CD along with it???? C'mon bruh.
And for real, there would have been one of those wack "best ofs" with a 1pg booklet released (see Best Of Schooly D for a reference) if my man didnt put on his cape & dig in the crates.

The tracklistings are as is. No bonus tracks on the disks (no room). But there will be 2-4 bonus tracks available for download from iTunes. These tracks will be available for 1 weeks after the release date.

this is the version i wanted to come out in the first place: dirty and raw. the mix got fucked up and that is what wound up on the wood soundtrack. but that is a live version you speak of

the snare was thin and i still hated that mix.

had i known that reel was in the building i woulda changed it for true notes.

ok, i listened once through so far and i wanna say thanks to ?uest for putting this together. i appreciate everything you guys do from the live shows to the liner notes. thank you!

anyway, one thought that came to mind was that i didn't think that the sequencing was as smooth as ?uests other projects. the roots albums, fantastic vol. 2, LWFC, etc are some of the best sequenced albums ever, but some of the transitions on home grown seemed kind of abrupt to me. this is not a complaint, just an observation. i'll keep listening and see if i feel differently later.

i dunno what format you put it in
for instance when i put this shit in my itunes
there is a .2345676543 delay in between songs
so as a result --i was so on the money with the timing---
it could sound off.

but i have never pulled more segue tricks than with this record.

what transitions you talking about cause everything is like one long ass heartbeat.

even the music under all that "its coming" jibberish was on time and i didn't even plan or notice that til yesterday (tariq uttering "one one" right on beat)

however, the one that stood out for me was the transition from
Silent Treatment to You Got Me.
That initial snare kinda catches you offguard.

Maybe this is cause ive heard Silent Treatment so many times,
that im used to hearing that whistle at the end.
i hear how you merged it onto the beginning of you got me...
but im waiting for the soft and mellow whistle 'close' and then BAM!

I'm pretty sure that's just a product of thinking you know what to expect. It's not the SAME transition, but that doesn't make it any worse of a transition. Once you listen to this long enough that the snare is what you're expecting, you should dig these transitions as well as any (other) album sequencing. But damn that's a sure way to incur the wrath of the ? right there, picking on his transitions in the same post as some cats just bitched about everything from the cost to the content. Cuz you know the man works hard on this shit. Not sayin you gotta love the results, but give 'im the benefit of the doubt, at least. That being said, my shit has little skips in it as if they went a little overboard trying to foil would-be pirates. ?, you know anything about this? I mean, I have no desire to rip the CD, but if I can't even play it on my computer, I may need to take these thangs back and at least cop em from Best Buy for the 10 spot. I wish that had been brought to my attention YESTERDAY (c) Wedding Singer Sandler for REAL. Damn y'all I think too much ?uesto liner note reading has taken its toll on my writing style. yeah i got that vibe when i saw the Boom liner notes... that made me laugh.


but im not saying it isnt in rhythm.... i think its that i heard that whistle 1000 times, so hearing that loud drum 'cut it off' (albeit in rhythm) raised my eyebrow.

.....it'z on beat like a mixtape frum da songz ta interlude to da next song, when you hear da instrumentalz, it doezn't have da same vibe & I also can tell where & how da sequencing made it much more of a dope album.

Why rap artistz & groupz today haven't learned dat some of da classik albumz frum da pazt relied on correct sequencing & track selection; you would think dat with all theze fake mixtape albumz out dat some artistz would have better transitionz on thoze cdz than their actual albumz.

since i take the bus to work everyday i first listened to the album on my mp3 player. the encoding of the album to mp3 and the very small gap that my player has between tracks is what led me to mention the sequencing.

HOWEVER, i finally game both disks the real test by playing them back to back in the car and these albums definitely flow together beautifully. for the record, i wasn't ever doubting you ?uest, i was merely just stating what i noticed on my first listen through. you still the sequencing king. great job, i'm loving the song selection.

This is like a Best Of...mixtape but beautifully mixed and packaged. I've been in near-meditation in front of my monitors just reading and taking it in. I even had to quick Mail, cause the inbox dings were distracting (...bout to turn the cell phone off).

The selection of songs was damn near perfect, which is quite a feat since there could have easily been another two CD worth of "greatest hits/best of" material out there. The only exceptions to this are essaywhutman (y'all must really be trying to cash in on this song - organix, DYWM, Come Alive - and its not even that amazing of a song compared to what The Roots have put out. the novelty wears off after a few listens) and possibly Star (I've never personally felt this one. would have MUCH rather preferred Water, but that's just me). But the rest of it is an INCREDIBLE "introduction" to the Roots. There was the standard best of material, but the gems that were put in there (QSM, Its Comin, Break You Off and Don't Say Nuthin remixes, etc) ... just brilliant touches that kept it fresh enough for the die hards.

Also, the PRODUCTION was tight as hell. The remastered Quicksand - BANGIN, and the BBC tracks were phenomenal, Proceed .. damn. I'd heard them all before but I felt like I was listening to them with new ears. For me the sequencing was incredible ... some of the best on a Roots album. The transitions, segues, interludes, and just generally how the songs fit together were great.

This album also showcased the BAND in their excellence in differenc settings (live, studio ...). In this respect, the song selection was great. There was stripped down beatboxing, complex orchestration and layering, and straight-up grooves. Overall, a great display of the creativity and talent we've come to love about the Roots.

Finally, I felt that this was an INCREDIBLE introduction to one of the best emcees ever to grace a mic. Moreso than TTP (the so-called "outing of Black Thought as the great emcee he is" album), these CDs showcase Thought's talents in a way that's refreshing even to those of us that have been following him from the beginning. It is a great historical overview of some of his best moments (not necessarily his best verses, but the songs capture his energy perfectly) and again, the sequencing lets each song build upon his previous flows in a really nice way.

In all ... hats off to quest for putting this together. Great job.














oh yeah ... the holy grail of liner notes is good too.

there's gotta be more than a remastering going on.

drums sound waaay more up front (early) making it a lot less laid back that the TP version. Thoughts vox sound like they're in a slightly higher pitch. You didn't up the tempo across the whole song, did you?

I might have to bring both versions in protools tomorrow and get down to the timeline nitty gritty.

rose stone's "everybody is a " comes in late. and off beat.

lots of shit that just ruined that album for me.

im sorry i see that record as the adopted album. i know most of yall havnt seen me defend this album as religiously as the other ones. its just after those millasecond mistakes i feel like this record was ruined.

so i let it die. besides i figured it dying could help us. cause im sure since we let some down....this will just make Game Threory that much better in their eyes.

I thought I was hearing the speed difference, but I assumed yall wouldn't just go and do that. figured I must just be tripping and the high-hats are coming in sooner or something...but then Thought's pitch was noticibly higher too...

didn't pick up on that upon first listen. I actually prefer the off-beat delay of the TP, especially the timing of when "everybody is a" comes in after the filter. to each their own.

The "Star" on the Tipping point was a master piece. The version on homegrown was terrible, IMO.

Both of the Gilles tracks are incredible. I had heard the version of Sacrifice but never the Seed/Melting Point/Web with all the soloing.
It great to finally have a great sounding example of you guys doing your thing that I can now show friends and explain how much they're missing out on.

Yeah, I just copped the cd's last night...I was so amped to finally get some new music to be excited about; I stayed up til 4am listening to the tracks over and over...especially Sacrifice and the Seed/Melting Pot/Web mixes. I'd like to thank the Roots for making my day at work an unproductive one.

it should be mandatory that all artists release liner notes with their releases. Much like Spike Lee's new book, it lets you know what goes on in the mind of an artist, which is just as fascinating as the music itself.

I've been listening for a couple days straight. Fat Beats has em for $9.99 each.

The Cover art - all these young'ns don't know. I had a friend over last night and showed him an old impulse cover inthat style. he flipped. We were both rocking the albums all night over some nice cocktails and "appitizers."

The transitions - Especially the one from Adreneline to The Lesson Pt. 3 where you show how that beat came about..." play the Rocky..!" I don't like Adrenaline as much and don't rock it as much as the others. But I had that shit on this morning and heard the transition - BANGIN.

Thought's vox - Hearing pass the popcorn and distortion and proceed all made me think about being 19 and being immersed in this hot ass music for the first time.

The rare/unreleased/peterson/live jawns - amazing. Amazing beats, lyrics, laughs "you in my hunt, now. "

The liner notes - I'm still reading. Perfect for the bus, train or toilet.

I'll be rocking these records for a loooong time. Sending copies to my 15 year old niece, on some, "put that 50 down. Listen to this!"

Thanks again, y'all. You are keeping this hip hop shit alive. Can't wait for Game Theory.

I copped both albums during my lunch break and was only able to listen to the first song (scarifice is SICK, I was so used to skippin over that track I didnt even realize what song that was til he got to the Clapton line) but these liner notes are takin up my whole afternoon.

I gotta stack of shit I got to get done before I leave for my night classes and I have not done shit, Im blaming the Roots when I get fired and drop out, but at least I got some good music too listen to.
