I was at the Mezzanine for the first time.. last weekish. ztrip and golden chyld were spinning. the spot was cool, not really feel the crowd too much. but im looking forward to seeing their tour.

I can't speak for Mos (i've never seen him live), but Kanye's live show is much better than Kweli's...

depends when u saw kanye and when u saw kweli. talib can sometimes be hit or miss, but i think he has a sick show. mos def is amazing live, and for talib to join him for blackstar is a can't miss. id defintely go to this rather than common and kanye

I'm not saying I wouldnt see Black Star or pay a shitload of money to see them live...

The reasons concerts end up on Monday is because Monday is actually the best day of the week...You can call out sick from work, so your weekend just turned into a three day fiesta..Second, if you hang out all night Monday then you can call in Tuesday and tell your boss "your tired ass hell". Now a two day weekend just turned into four.....

Also on a Mondays the moon sits at a 65 degree angle facing earth tilted upward in a forward balance( me & Einstein spoke about this), which means nobody feels like working on Monday.. The body tricks the mind the mind thinks the body is crazy..so there u have it...That's why they put concerts on Monday

Tonights show was sick as hell. Opening act was K'naan and he/they killed it. Jean Grae ripped it to shreds. Mos started off slow, but gained momentum. Pharaohe Monch did "Right Here," "Oh No," and "Simon Says."

Verrrrrrry very sick show. They were selling shirts that say "Boycott Corporate Radio: Do Not Let Corporate Robots Define Hip Hop."

i don't want to be a downer or anything, but that sac show was terrible. jean was pretty good, but mos was boooring. he could have shortened his 2 hour set to make it an amazing 25 minute set. he had moments that were so good but for the most part it was drawn out and miserable.

just for comparison, next weekend in sf is jamiroquai and the roots (sat/sun). both of those bands bring an amazing live show and actually look they're trying. mos kept sayin that he has nothing to prove...maybe he should. if i'm paying 35 bucks i want to see a great set that actually looks like there was some effort put into it.

the rest of you might have a different opinion on the shows where talib actually shows up and you hear some blackstar songs. talib is a whole other story for me. i've tried to see him 3 times in the last few years and only barely saw him once. if you put out questionable records and cancel shows all the time no wonder people say you've fallen off.

i was impressed. really. and im hard to please.
the sac crowd needs to keep it moving though. i saw way too many people standing there like totem poles. fuck them.

i didnt think mos' set was boring at all.

its always hard being the first stop on the tour...so many fricken kinks to work out.

one major complaint...pharoah's mic kept on cutting in and out.

the acoustics at memorial have always sucked ass...i havent been to that venue since 99.

For anyone in MA, I was wondering where the Calvin Simmons Theatre is. I cant find a listing for it anywhere. Please help.

Even though you are a despised Laker fan, I will give you a lending hand since its your B-Day and all. Calvin theater is in the center of town, on King St. I just called the Box Office, they told me that they are still trying to book the show, and its not confirmed yet. When they confirm it, it will be on their website, www.iheg.com.

Oh, and the Calvin sucks. No dancefloor, it's all seated. I can't imagine having a Hip Hop show there, only time I went there was to see a friend's HS graduation and to see Ray Charles. I hope they end up having it at Pearl St, who is owned by the same dude.

If anyone knows Mos Def or has contact with him please suggest this to him for his performance. I went to the Sac show and K'naan was there opening and I thought of something that would make this song beautiful live. I think it would very dope if when Mos performs
"Umi Says" that he brings out K'naan with his drummers to drum during the song. It would probably sound best if they were drumming toward the ending.

I think this will bring new life to the song and give it a great lively feeling and I believe it would bring something else spiritually from Mos. I got into the venue when K'naan only had 2 songs left and I thought I was highly impressed. He has 3 people, including himself, on what I believe are djembe hand drums playing. It sounds beautiful. I'd love to see a full set from him. If anyone hasn't had the chance to see him go check him out.

Well If I would have checked this forum a couple of days before the show in Sacramento and saw that there no Kweli and no replacement for him, I would've gotten rid of my tickets....

I was heated seeing the sign that he wasn't there on friday night, but I was ready to Mos rip shit up....But my thoughts about the show.

The acoustics, and mics were just terrible... and the crowd didn't help neither. I couldn't take it anymore, and I actually left the show semi-early. I took off after Mos did Ms. Fat Booty because the echoing in the auditorium was getting on my nerves and the set seemed to be a little longer than expected, that and the fact that I thought Pharoahe wasn't even going to come on stage... I got shafted and this actually will go down as one of the worst shows I have ever been to.

And this is occasion #2 that Kweli has stiffed me.... Fuck his management team for their lack of scheduling for this show and my interview back in August

this will be great!! I was gonna go to both shows, but Halloween will be crazy enough as it is, so I'll stick to the day after. Afterparty for those that know whats up...

I was there we got there super early, got right in the front shook all there hands. Kweli tore it up, Jean Grae Tore it up, K'naan Tore it up, Mos Def did his thing all though i'm not down with alot of his new songs he was good, Blackstar tore it up big time, but by far Pharaohe Monch doing Agent Orange, My Life, and SIMON SAYS was the best part, Pharaohe needs to make another cd big time he's the man!

any idea when they are gonna determine the Champaign/Inianapolis show?

I 2nd the concern over the supposed Dec. 8th show. I am equally ready to make the drive to either Champ-Urb or Naptown, but the suspense is killin me! Mos is the last on my list of fav artists I've yet to see, and it couldn't be anymore perfect than both Blackstar mic's in the same venue.

Also, anyone that's already been to a show, albeit minus Kweli, please post set lists.

so i live in san francisco but i was headed to tahoe for the weekend and thought it would be a good idea to check out the breedlove odyssey tour- considering i had bever seen mos and for sure had never seen mos and talib as blackstar together- the day i get to the damn show i found out that TALIB bitched out to do a show in NY? can anyone verify these accusations as to why Talib did not show on the 10/28 opening show in Sacramanto!!! by the way sac sucks and i will never go to a show in sac again!!!!!!

Kweli didnt bitch on the Sac show to do one in NY cuz he was in Vegas for Vegoose which is a huge music fest. in Vegas.... They had Blackalicious, Lyrics Born, Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson. I was planning on going to that festival but when they said Kweli would be on tour and he opened up in Sac. I figured he cancelled Vegoose to do the shows, but I was wrong about that one.

Sac shows are usually OK to go to, but I have noticed a downward trend in the crowds at the shows I have attended, but the crowd was good at the GIft of Gab show with Lateef The Truthspeaker, so I thought theyre would be some good heads there

I want to see this so bad but the closest is in Cali. You guys should come to Portland Oregon :) !! I love ya!

Does anyone know if the cancelled shows are going to made up? The ABQ show on Saturday was cancelled. Box office is reporting that it is due to illness. Hope they come back instead of refunding. I need to see Mos live.

we were talking to the tour organzers all week about who would be the best replacement...they were suggesting either Lauryn Hill or De La Soul

it was quite a topic of discussion...Lauryn would be the glamour way to go, but De La more the spirit of the show

there were very conflicting opinions as to which would stem the tide of refunds (which we would offer, of course)

a quick survey of our front line people (box office, etc) confirmed that there were 2 distinct types buying the tix...the Howard U's and the UMD's were the generalizations

ultimately we decided to go with De La Soul, drop the ticket price and give everyone some cash back on the way in that already bought tix...our thinking was that if people clamored for refunds, and we had to put tix back up, the college kids home for the Thanksgiving wknd were more likely to want to see a decent hip-hop night for a reasonable ticket, than a high priced Lauryn Hill show

so we were waiting for the confirmation of De La when the tour called to tell us that Mos Def is back...AND...Lauryn was so excited about getting out there again that she would still like to play...so we're actually trying now to figure out how to get her on, as well

so...let's have little WWJD discussion here...who would have been the best replacement, De La or Lauryn, and why?

try and play club owner here...the question is which would have caused the least stampede for refunds

De La is my choice because there are already enough intensely talented individual M.C's rockin the stage -- we need a group like De La to just bring it all together and cap that night like none other. Imma be at the Nov 25th show, and as you can tell I'm in a state of hype.

I'm pretty sure De La played at the 9.30 twice this year, so I'd go with Lauryn hands down. Honestly, I thought the price of the tickets were too high in the beginning, but I wouldn't miss a Blackstar show for anything, so I bought the tickets. If I got Lauryn instead of Mos, I wouldn't ask for a refund, but if the choice is De La (even though I like them and their show better)I'd feel like I deserve SOME money back.

Just checked ticketmaster and there's still tickets for tommorow (wed) nights show at Lupo's. Who's joinin me?

So first the part that sucks. I went with my friend, who's Somalian and got me into K'Naan when his cd first dropped. They said the show started at 9, and we got in the door at 9:10 to find that K'naan had gone on at 8:30 (when the place was pretty much empty I'd think, given the lines outside) and Jean Grae was already a few songs into her set. So that really sucked, cause we were excited about seeing him.

Jean's set was really good, I actually never listened to her before much, and her spot on Where You Gonna Run from Right About Now was about all I heard of her before this. She was great, having fun with the audience, definitely a performer who enjoys what she's doing. Plus her flow is tight.

Pharoah Monch was incredible, you'd have thought he was the headliner, and he killed. He had the audience screaming easily as loud as Talib and Mos did. He played some classics and one fucking awesome new song. Had everyone jumping, swaying, shouting along. Then in the first of two kick-ass transitions, Talib came out on stage to do Guerilla Monsoon rap with Monch.

Talib did a great mix of classic RE stuff and new stuff, and everything in between. After Guerilla Monsoon Rap he went into his part of Old School from Dangerdoom, I Try, then killed with (this isn't everything and probably not in the right order) The Blast, Move Something, Fly that Knot, Where You Gonna Run (with Jean Grae coming back on, they hit this one perfect). I do have to say that I've seen Talib twice now, and I don't love his live voice. He shouts in a way he doesn't in the studio. Halfway through Get By, who do we hear coming on the mic but Mighty Mos, who does the rest of the song with Talib before the two launch into a much longer Black Star set than I ever expected.

The did Struggle Struggle, which everyone in the crowd already seemed to know, Definition, Astronomy. Seeing the two of them on stage together was incredible. Seeing Talib was great, and seeing Mos was great too, but this was what everyone was there to see. They tore it up, and the audience was going nuts.

Sadly, when Mos started his set (which was probably the longest of everyone in the show), it started off pretty bad. He did a lot of singing, a lot of stuff from The New Danger that wasn't great, a lot of dead time between songs. I think 20 minutes in or so he realized this, because we heard "bucka bucka bucka bucka bucka bucka" and the crowd went nuts. It was good to hear Mos play the stuff we wanted to hear. He definitely got the audience back, cause from here on he played a lot more BOBS shit and the good stuff from the New Danger, like Hip Hop, Ms. Fat Booty, Umi Says Ghetto Rock, the Boogie Man song. There was still some wack shit in there, but Mos is a great performer, and he was getting really into it. He did a new track about New Orleans that was really good, and he did that and a few other songs a capella before doing them with the beat, which was cool, but may have been better if he did it once instead of 3-4 times.

Towards the end, Talib came back on to do Brown Skin Lady with Mos, which was great. The weird part was this chick who rushed the stage and started grabbing Mos before getting jumped and dragged off by security. Mos just looked really confused about what the hell was happening.

Given what I read about the previous concerts on the tour, it seems like we got a lot of Black Star in comparison, which everyone loved. Other than missing K'naan and a little Jean Grae, and some of Mos Def's shit not being up to par, it was a great show that was well worth the money. About K'naan starting at 8:30 though, he's part of the tour, he's not a pre-show. If the tickets and the venue say it starts at 9, they should start at 9. Or just tell us that it's starting at 8:30 so we know to be there. I know K'naan is by far the smallest name on the tour, but he's a MC who I really wanted to see and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Just a response on that part-I have tickets for the show in Boston tomorrow night and I just got an e-mail saying that the show times have changed from 9:00 to 8:00, maybe that is the case for the show in Conn. too!

Heads up people going to the Boston show-head there early-doors open at 7:00 and again the show starts at 8:00.

Nope, no e-mail from Toads, and if you check their website it still says Doors 8:00, Show 9:00. I went to the show with my friend who's Somalian. He likes Talib and Mos alright, doesn't know any Pharoah Monch or Jean Grae. He wouldn't have gone to the show if it wasn't for K'naan. After the show he was happy he went because the four acts he got to see he liked, but was really pissed about missing K'naan because of the time thing.

And of course I meant Supreme Supreme, not Struggle Struggle. Just happened to be playing Strugglin' by K'naan when I was writing that and brainfarted a nonexistant BS song into existence.

They had a poet to do a poem before K'Nnan though. People was already there though. People were in line around the building...

shit...that was some pure hip-hop. i missed k'naan's set and the beginning of jean's cause they said the show would start at 9. i got there at 9 and it was midway thru jean. o well, the 2nd half of her shit was fire.

pharoahe- shit was crazy. i actually had a good view for this. he did queens, simon says, agent orange, the light, and mad more shit. just cant recall the name of them. but either way, pharoahe brought some serious energy to the stage. people went wild for simon says.

talib- shit was amazing. unfortunately i moved from where i was to get a better view but just got stuck towards the back in the crowd. besides that, i think talib's set was the best, aside from blackstar. his shit was just streamlined perfectly. his voice was all good at this show and u could hear every word perfectly. he did old school, fly that knot, move something, the blast, too late, love language, never been in love, who got it, guerilla monsoon rap (w/ pharoahe), i try, broken glass (ante up beat), where ya gonna run and black girl pain (w/ jean grae), lonely people, and get by (w/ mos). maybe some more but i cant remember right now. either way, his shit was fire. off the hook.

blackstar- this shit was where its at. highlight of the show for real. these 2 dudes steal the show. amazing stage presence the 2 of them. out of control. every verse, every word was perfect. i need to see a full blown blackstar show, cause 5 songs just aint do them justice. they did get by together, supreme supreme, definition, respiration, astronomy, then talib came back during mos def's set for brown skin lady. shit was amazing, wish i had a video of the performance.

mos def- good set, but i was a little disappointed. after a few hours of standing, sweating my ass off cause there aint no room, trying to get a view of the stage, im tired and mos def did some slow ass songs. i just wanted the energy back, i stood there, enjoying his singing, but waiting for the classics. he did mathematics, hip-hop, ms fat booty, sex love and money, katrina clap, some new shit that was hot, more from new danger (which was the slow part), and ended with umi says. shit was good, but i was tired by then, and after talib and blackstar, mos def just was a step backwards (as good as it was)

-other notes, someone from MOP showed up and the place blew up. i dont know who it was, couldn't see, but someone said it was only 1 of them. anyway, they did Ante Up which was crazy. toads place is a great venue. small and good sound. the place must of been sold the fuck out, cause there was no room ANYWHERE. security was more uptight than ive ever seen them. and i dunno if it was just this show cause last week it wasn't there, but there was some fucking barracade btw the stage and the crowd which was bogus. at one point, during talib's set me and everyone around smelled burning wood. i could of sworn toad's place was gonna burn down. as bad as that would hav been, it would hav been cool to be at the show when blackstar literally burned the place down. the place was packed as fuck and i thought the energy was great. id say in order of best peformance id go:
blackstar > talib > pharoahe and mos def (cant decide) > jean > didnt see k'naan (unfortunately)

It was a gift for someone, but my tickets were for the late show and ticketmaster goofed and sent me the wrong ticket for my fiance... so i'm SOL unless i can move this ticket and get another one.
