what a fantastic show. around this time, near the end of the tour, the soultronics
were in full swing. with all songs performed almost on auto-pilot without losing
that funk or enthousiasm that we're used to. this was really an amazing tour. i
can only hope and dream that we'll get to experience this again in the near
future.
eventhough it's an audience recording, this is yet again a nice bootleg for the
fan. the "feel like makin love" performance is still a favorite of mine. i especially
dig the final interlude. instead of playing "maiden voyage" or slum's "fantastic
volume 2" intro, the soultronics go into d'angelo's "africa" and stretch it up to
over five minutes. for a moment there i thought d was actually going to perform
it live, but too bad..

wow. 9 months ago we started with a mission. 9 months later we saw it complete.

and it was so good.

we arrived in atlanta at 8am. the thing i hate the most about touring on a bus is the last day of touring you got to gather all the things that you accumulated for the duration of your tour. and man did i accumulate stuff.

all the clothes i got.
all the clothes i got for free.
all the books i got.
my big ass george foreman grill.
all the empty cd cases.
all my treats on videotape.
all the d'angelo posters i collected.
all my games (monopoly, dominoes, scrabble, outburst)
all the magazines.
gifts.
etc.

not to mention my makeshift studio (drum machine, speakers, keyboard, mini amp)--whew! i had to get two kippling bags just for that (not to mention my overload on pillows, towels, blankets, from all the hotels i went to.) stupid me decided to push packin til nightfall.

on tour there are two camps: production and artist. artist's have it good. production doesn't artist crew is management, assistants, bandmembers, choreographer, and security. production is soundmen (minus kelo: a diva) roadies, stage managers, wardrobe, and respective assistants. artist crew get to sleep in better hotels. production crew are lucky if they get a hotel at all. artist go to sleep in the hotel the night before. production people go to the next town after they break down the stage and sleep on the bus. they shower at the venue (if they have time) then they have to set up for that night's show. so in a nutshell. if you are a newjack and you goin on the road thinkin that it's all sweet and you realize that after setting up the mics and not showering after 14 hours. and you gotta face all those fine ass women in that dingy ass white t-shirt meanwhile the band marches in all refreshed and clean and...happy.

so we pulled our resources together, and got them an appreciation gift. each member of the crew got an expensive bottle of champagne that is the least we could do for every bottle of water they fetched, and every luggage bag they had to hull from the bus, and every kfc run they did whenever someone had a chicken jones.

unfortunately we gave the presentation onstage. which took up time. which then of course caused opening act lucy pearl to go over 15 minutes. funny thing was i begged d to please, just for old time sake let's start on the nose. unbeknownst to me, because of our photo session with rolling stone magazine not only would we be dressed in time. but the session was right onstage behind the bridge setting. so all we had to do was "bam!" go onstage.........

....then the bad news came. lights on at 11:01. it takes the crew 20 minutes to set up, and breakdown the stage. so we went on at 9:15. early for our standards, but still late nevertheless.

man we were so in the zone it was sick. i was so determined to make this show the best show. the audience setting was the shiznit.tables and candlelight were set out front. so at nighttime it looked like......a real concert.

our main surprise was d's duet with james brown sidekick bobby byrd. awww man. if there ever was a time when the true sound of the jb's came to life. it was last night. i was john 'jabo' starks. and pino was bootsy collins. spanky was phelps collins....fuck it...we were the jb's. i swear. charles bobbit (james' former manager, now bobby's) said that one performance took years off bobby's life. they definitely wanna work with us again (....."and make sure you bring that funky ass drummer) . i'll never hear "i know you got soul" or "sex machine" the same again. wow. dream come true.

we also knew that inclusion would mean trouble down the line timewise. but if you ask me. i'm kinda glad we went out on a high energy funk note. (we dropped "brown sugar", and couldn't do "untitled".)

but you know. we were so in the zone, i don't think that the audience really sweated that. (okay so the women still stayed up front until the crew damn near broke the bridge down.) i was determined not to shed tears, cause this isn't goodbye. this just means that i will not be going to the promised land to finish the mission. (although if my hunch is correct. i think come febuaray i will have performed "untitled" one more time.

there was no big good-bye (ok, they gave me a big ass cake) but i went straight back to pack 5 big ass bags of clothes. of which i finished packing by 5am.

8am i was up.

9am i was gone.

this was the best time of my life.

be it ever so humble....

there is no place like home.

i remember D being mad at me.

i broke the news that morning that phrenology was a year late (this was fall 2000--and phren didnt even see the light of day til nov 2002!) and because of my personal decisions i kept food out of my crew's mouth cause i took a year off to do this tour (i remember mal being mad as fuck cause he couldn't get something as simple as pampers cause we aint worked in 4 months and the nigga was cussin me out HAWD!)---

i can confidentally say that this was one of the best concerts i've ever been to date (close runner up was the alkaholiks show in '97 at the RKCNDY). went with my (now-ex) girlfriend and another homegirl...so we have pretty decent seats (not too close, not too far away), and i notice that we're sitting in an area with a lot of big women (big women + D fans = watchoutnow). so D decides to take his wifebeater off and throws it in our general direction. i know my girl is sort of a D fan, and so is my homegirl, so i stretch out and actually catch D's wifebeater...but about 5 extra hands grab at it. so here were are tugging at Ds wifebeater (it's so fuckin silly at this point, especially to people who know me personally), and i pull out my keys and tear that mofo in half. we all each got a piece of Ds wifebeater...which i still have to this day somewhere, along with the ticket stub (yup the show was that dope). anyway, i managed to DL this performance offa soulseek weeks ago, and will cut-and-paste questo's show diary to go wittit. i can (repeat, can) believe you bought all those records here...seattle's a goldmine if you know where to look ;) again, thanks for the memories. peace

I don't have all the tracks from the brixton show, i've got the one i posted, 'feel like makin love', a longer version of untitled (9 1/2 minutes) and 'send it on'. Sadly the quality isn't perfect (it's ok ) like the 'Thank U' tune i posted earlier.

But i do have all of the Stockholm show (apart from one track i think, there seems to be quite a gap between Lady (which sounds unfinished) and untitled). tons of funk cot-dammit.. & perfect quality @ 160Kbps.

it's great that we keep rehashing surfaces for old material that he's done in the past but, it's been over 5 freaking years now. i think the fans deserve something new. these snippets of songs are cute and all but, i feel bamboozled right now as a true d' fan.

Look, if he aint coming with some new stuff because he's bloated up then thats crap. All i care about is hearing and recieving some new, quality MUSIC. Look how many times Luther changed size but im sure people still loved Luther regardless. Big or small. I sincerely hope that Mr. Archer hasn't lost his passion for the music. Being a musician is a wonderful thing when you can just be creative in that way, expressing and sharing that, and feeling and loving what you do, and doing it well, just like the jams in those out-takes ?uest posted where you feel the vibe in the studio from those sessions man. Even though i MISSED most of the live stuff that was posted early on...(i came late to the thread initially and then after i got here I was having some DL problems - which have since been figured out thank goodness) ...

On another note; i feel you on hearing something 'NEW'. We're now in July and with no news about proceedings im getting disheartened (again) which means i'll have to do with my archive. I feel like a complete b**** for asking all the time about the D'Angelo latest like everyone else (and not getting a response) cos i know there's a long line of proceedures to recording and releasing an album but at the same time, like everyone that has absoloutely loved the craft of the last two albums, CRAVE some more artistry that the man is capable of bringing, but won't. It's frustrating, but we can only wait and see.

Honestly, for those that may have missed some stuff, the Sweden set (which I already have on bootleg so I didn't dl) is the best quality set I've heard. Really good shit. I'm pretty sure I downloaded and deleted the Atlanta set (though I appreciated it for all those people hooking it up). I'll get that up another time. That's really my most recommended as far as people spending time downloading and uploading.

The quality is realy great...they're obviously live but the sound so crystal clear it sounds like it could be live-in-studio instead of live on stage or something... of cousre it could be live on stage via soundboard...

ahh that explains it...

rehearsals are ususally my favorite type of recordings anyway..the artists with real chops are typically just a bit more relaxed and just a bit more likely to experiment and take some chances at rehearsals...at rehearsals artists usually aren't worried about recording the 'perfect studio track' for the record, and they're not worried about playing to every fans whim at the live shows...so the result is, out of rehearsals usually come some of the freshest most creative inspired and fun recordings of them all...and these fit the bill, fun stuff...
plus i just like to hear the evolution of songs, hear things getting worked out...

it shouldn't matter if you're on a mac or not, (i'm on a mac too and just dL'd this rar and opened it right up without any problems, so it must be something else on your end. Do you have compression/decompression software...such as Stuffit for instance?

The only thing i had problems with were parts 2-5 of the Higher quality Brixton video footage...i got part 1 downloaded and opened fine, but for some reason when i dL'd parts 2-5 they wouldn't open on my end, kept getting some invalid format or something. Other than that I've been able to open whatever i've been able to grab.

BTW thanks MUCH to ALL of you folks who have shared by the way...this has been really fantastic for a music junkie like me...glad to know some of this music was documented for history's sake...

but my question is, how was the show? If anybody has footage or was there, is it worth getting?

I have someone who will sell me a copy but I have no idea how good it is. Quality (picture) should be good but I mean the show itself.

I know the Sao Paolo and Montreaux shows have been getting around so in comparison, how is this one? I'd think this would be circulating even more since that Jazz Fest is pretty big so I wouldn't want to assume it's a subpar show.

Forget it, I'm babbling -- I'm just opening the topic about this show as well as the topic of shows outside of the U.S. vs. shows in the U.S. -- the crowd and band interaction with them seem to be a bit different. No fault to them (crowd AND band) but I don't know if it's my perception or just how it really is. Is D'Angelo pandering to them (the laydees) or are they just fucking it up for themselves and not allowing him to get into a REAL jamming show. Then of course, doing Untitled toward the end and letting the crowd get open off of that is no coincidence. There's obviously sex in the music so it should be in the show -- very apparent even in the foreign shows. Shit, Voodoo was built off of sex.

But it does still feel...different. Of course, as far as video, I'm going by the edited Send It On video which might be leaning toward the ladies' reaction to D so that might've just been fucking with my perception.

No real big topic with me -- I'd rather just talk a little bit in between all the links and requests for links. I think this whole thing has been touched on before and the entire foreign vs. U.S. response to black music has been a topic for decades. Just tossing it in the air cause this thread isn't really getting as much discussion going on in comparison to Prince months and all that.

The sound on this one is not as good as Brixton (I guess it's taken from video tape), but the camera work is much more active and up close. Actually, it's a great show - worth watching for the trombone solo on Left & Right alone (and for D trashing the f#ck out of the drumkit)!

After diggin this out and watching it again, I'm really struck by how happy and energised D seemed at this time in his career. I know ?uest has said D got real scared before his shows, and how he didn't want to be recognised as a sex symbol - but you wouldn't know it from this show! Damn near grinning ear to ear for most of the time he's on stage, diving into the crowd, etc! The live recording of "Heaven Must Be Like This" was first released on the soundtrack for "Down in the Delta" which came out in 1998. The liner notes for this CD state that the track was recorded in New York City.

Man, these Essence Joints are hot...what year were they from?

I have to say that I was really not feeling the arrangements of the Brown Sugar songs on the Voodoo tour...I think it took a lot of the juice out the jams, and faster does not mean more DANCEABLE by any means, especially if it runs over the groove of a song.

Lady is SUPPOSED to be slow and soulful, not sped up (IMHO) - same goes for Jonz, Brown Sugar and, Jonz...but hell I didn't write the songs so what the hell do I know.

I just felt the original arrangements/tempos were perfect and that the sped up versions killed the groove and emotional-slo-grind that made BS so special.

The same can be said for smooth hip-hop joints...kat will lay down a well-articulated verse which cleanly shows the cadence and genius of the verse...

But when you check 'em live, they scream it out with 10 of their homies like it's the next coming of Onyx's "Slam"...

I hate that shit...that's why I stopped going to hip-hop shows...

I know...I'm waiting to be crucified by ya'll...but hey...it is what it is.

Yeah, they made $50 last month doing the same thing. They must have got this one from that same "record fair". Funny how they didn't even bother to change the file names to the actual song titles, like "Ex Girl To The Next Girl", "Soliloquy of Chaos", "Speak Ya Clout" or "I Gotcha". Maybe if they would have done that they could have milked a few more pounds out of some sucker.

I reported this person to ebay....they will remove the item, give the person a warning and if they violate the rules again, they will be banned.....I also emailed their puck ass and told what I did......

To me, sweden seems to be the tightest live recording posted from the tour. If you aren't familiar with the song you are no doubt familiar with the oft-sampled refrain which goes:

The way he phrased that we should be thankful just made me think of that song. Great song, underrated albums too.
