30545, Common and Talib ghostwrite for Diddy
Posted by allison, Fri Mar-18-05 12:49 PM

Several months after his Vote Or Die campaign, sources tell SOHH.com that Diddy is apparently looking to express his new penchant for politics on his next album. Puff has enlisted the services of socially aware emcees Common and Talib Kweli to pen some of his material. Meanwhile, rapper/producer Kanye West is on board to produce several tracks for Puff's new project, which is currently in the works. The record is reportedly Diddy's last solo album.

I definitely agree. I think Nas put it well,
"...Cause it's trendy to be the conscious MC
But next year, who knows what we'll see...?" Nas - These Are Our Heroes.

I mean i'm kinda glad that's one less song on the radio with lil jon, but i don't really like the fact that he's got all these dudes ghost writing for him.

well, if nas was right, and it was all that trendy...bush would probably have not been re-elected, common and kweli would have a larger audience, and the lyrical content of most rappers would speak on a lot more than the usual topics of discussion.

First of all, if someone like common or Talib who supposedly represent "conscious" music, even considered writing something for someone like diddy, then they don't even deserve to be talked about on this site, regardless of what they've done in there career. I have no tolerance for people who claim they are about a movement and then do shit to pay the bills. Fuck that, if you are real about what you say then you would live in a van until you die until people recognize what your talking about. You never bow down to there ignorance. The very idea that either Talib or Common would lower themselves to write for someone like diddy is embarasing to them as human beings and artists. Everybody on this site seems to say and act according to what they think others will pecieve as "conscience" but in reality we are just human. nobody has the answer. As always, this is just my opinion.
-Salsbury
P.S. You guys should check out www.renegadesoldiers.net it's pretty much not hip-hop, but with all the elements you love about rap music.

What in heaven's name are you talking about? Please explain...

Because according to your logic, we should have stopped talking about Common a long time ago when he did the Sean Jean campaign right?

I mean techinically, you shouldn't even be on this site then, after The Roots did that ad for Coca Cola.

Now run along, your headwrap's getting dirty.
30576, uh ur confusing his argument

the one thing you did say worth anything is that i don't belong on this site. because generally, most of what I read on this site are dick riding wanna be "real" hip-hop heads. Ya'll can talk about your diddy and his money, and how getting heard is all that matters but, it is because you think like that, that when you pass away nobody will remember you. These so called real mc's that you drool over care not about what you think. Conscience music is just another means to get your loot, but you feel cool because you can go on a website and talk about how much you know about hip-hop. my head wrap has been dirty, i wish you knew what I looked like you ignorant punk. As always this is just my opinion.

30581, they got mouths to feed

also ghostwriting for diddy is a good way to get their message to the masses. and the more $$$ they have the better chance they have of doing the same.

I agree with you to a point but this shit is just not realistic. I mean Talib and Common got kids to feed so how can you really hate on them for "doing shit to pay the bills" I personally cant stand Diddys music and dont think he is representing hip hop but you know what, if Talib or Common can use him to spread their message then it may not be such a horrible thing. Like I said they got Kids to feed and I cant hate on them if they did Gostwrite. As far as boycotting the boards and the artists that is some bullshit. All I hop is that Diddy gets exposed and put on blast for all the TRL / 106 & Park headz who still think he writes his own shit. On a final note, some people forget that for someone like Talib who has NEVER gone Gold or Platinum this is his life not some fantasy hip hop land that publicists and media create.. Cash may not Rule Everything Around Me (or him) but it pays the bills.
30583, i fucking hate diddy

I wish this info didn't come out until AFTER the tracks were released - I guarantee everyone would've still said he's a shit rapper and his lyrics are wack.
30585, some of you are close-minded as fuck.

i'm not at all a Diddy-dick-holder, but i was gonna write a big long reply ... until i realized it wouldn't matter to the bulk of you that can only see the walls of your own colon.

the bottom line is that i doubt that Puff's jumping on the "conscious" bandwagon (that term is so lame anyway) because it's the current trend (check out pretty much any current rap hit's video) or because it's gonna bring him an assload of money (as if he needed it to). also, he's extending a hand to people that can get the job done, and will get paid to do what they do very well. i really can't find too much fault with any of this.

that said, a better idea for politically-informed project would be for Diddy to corral these emcees, match them with some hot beats, and market it as "P. Diddy presents ..." - i think that would be a better (and more palatable) option.

to end, i'll go on record saying that P. Diddy is probably more hip hop than most of you suburban-bred complainers. dude started out as a dancer and made his way up the ladder with hustling skills that were forged in hip hop. i don't know that i would consider him an innovator in any way, but his successes, i think, have opened doors here and there for other black/minority entrepreneurs, and though i have some issues with the guy, i can be a man and recognize that, unclouded by extreme tunnel vision.

Wether the shirt cost diddy 2 dollars or 22dollars you should have voted for bush anyway cause u didn't vote at all. The fact of the matter is Common nor Kweli or any other MC need Diddy. Millitary minds will prevail, or have you forgotten? The Revolution will not be televised.
