28374, FYI: NO JAZZIES CDs
Posted by Nesta, Tue Oct-26-99 07:57 AM
To Whomever at MCA or Motive that can do something about this:
OK, so it's Tuesday and I perform my usual Tuesday ritual, record shopping during lunch. So I head on over to HMV (46th and 5th) to show the sistas some love and cop their joint even though I had an advance copy.
I walk in the store and see no sign of a jazzies album. I felt hey MCA could've did a little more promotion, you know send a poster or something, whatever. So I stroll over to the J section in the Soul music section. Well there are none there, so I think hey maybe they sold out (how nice, I'm never that optimistic), but I figured I'd check to make sure. So I go down to the Jazz section just in case there's some slow kid that works there and thought it was a jazz record. No luck.
So I go back upstairs and talk to record dude and low and behold he has no idea of what I'm talking about. Then he goes and looks at some list and says "maybe next week". I'm like trust me, the album drops today. So he goes back to his computer and tells me that he sees know such thing. He asks me to write the name of the group down and he'll order it. I abide. Hopefully,he'll follow through. I'll check in with him later in the week.
So now, I mozy on over to the Wiz which is just across the street. Again no posters or signs, but hey, the Jazzies aren't Whinteny Houston, but damn it wouldn't hurt. So again, I stroll over to the Js in the Rock/R&B section and no luck (I also checked the Ts as well). I ask the dude in that section and he has no idea of what I'm talking about. I ask him do they plan on ordering it and he gives me this "My mommy said I'm not allowed to talk to strangers" look. This guy is definitely not management material. He says they jsut get in what they get in and they don't order anything. I don't know how true that is, but no one there had a clue.
NOW, I remember when heads asked folks to go to their local store to make sure that they were planning to stock this record. I figured that two major chains like these in NYC would definitely have the record. they both carry obscure titles. I GUESS I WAS WRONG. Maybe these two stores were isolated incidents. Neither is the flagship store in the city, but I doubt it.
Has anyone in NYC copped the jazzies joint at an HMV or Wiz?
"I ain't trying to dis, but I don't be trying to fuck with Limp Bizkit" - Mos Def

I checked out the canadian HMV website yesterday and the album was on the site and said it would only be available for shipping today. So I'm assuming that it should be there today. I'm going to call in advance because I don't want to walk all thru downtown in the rain today to find out it's not even there. HMV have been bitches in the past about this stuff. Plus, everything seems to come out a week late here, Mos Def, Pharoahe, Legendary ep (2weeks). Anywho, check out hmv.com, and hmv.ca, maybe you'll get an answer there.
Peace,
Phil
"Okayplayer.com, first the Web, next, the World!" - Phil copyright 1999
"Phil, You're a Genius" - Kayci Copyright 1999
"I'm not a genius, I just say what other people should be thinking." - Phil Copyright 1999
"Girl, you so chicken, your Grandfather's name is Colonel Sanders" - Phil Copyright 1999
"You must have verbal diarrhea cuz all you do is talk shit." I just want to laugh in Nestas face(LOL!!!) You non having Jazzyfatnastees album mofo, I'm f@#king w/ you bruh, but everybody knows where I got mine from. If you live in NY, and can't find it...check Record Explosion, it's a bit pricey, but you figure seeing these two beautiful women perform every Sunday night for FREE, we owe them something. Go get the album y'all word!!!! I would sell one of mine, but Mercedes and Tracey have to sign the two I own individually. I'm stingy, right?

"You'll get shoved to the side cousin for talking all that thug shit/
I'll hit you with the Henessey bottle that you in love with"....
(This lyric quote brought to you by SkipGotSkills)..
Who the hell is Sinista 7 anyway...??????

Just for the record. I got the album on the 27th. After I gently prodded the dude from HMV on Tuesday the 26th, they had the CD in on Wednesday., the 27th They only had three copies and I got the last of the three.
Thanks to all the players offering assistance.
"Only when lions have historians will hunters cease to he heroes." - African Proverb

Posted by Hiquanji, Tue Oct-26-99 08:17 AM
i dont live in NYC, so this is a little off topic, but I got my Jazzies at Media Play. I was a little surprised actually cause they had a whole box of CDs on top of the cd racks and had a "New release" sign all over em. there was no posters, and they wernt in the actual New Releases rack as you walk in, but they were gettin a little love out here. I live in the hills out in western mass(did i evermention that the mall i goto is right next to a friggin cow farm...nastiest smells ever as you drive by), so i was surprised they got this much attantion. good luck on findin your copy(ies)

"I said my shit and ran my lyrics and now my verse is over" -Big Boi
28381, OH, I CAN GET IT!
Posted by Nesta, Tue Oct-26-99 08:40 AM
I'm not worried about picking it up. I'm sure that Tower has it. But it's just not a good sign that HMV and the Wiz don't have it. This is the first time I can ever remember HMV not having ANY release that I wanted the day it dropped and the only time that the Wiz did this was when it was going through bankruptcy a while back and most vendors had the chain on a C.O.D. basis.
Finding new release is never a problem for me at HMV and the Wiz. that's why I wanted to bring this to whomever's attention.
"I ain't trying to dis, but I don't be trying to fuck with Limp Bizkit" - Mos Def

I've tried BeatStreet in Brooklyn, Virgin on 14th, and Tower on Broadway. No luck at any of them for "the Once and Future." Can anybody help a brother out?
28383, BAD SIGN!

If Virgin, Beat Street and Tower didn't have it. Chances are that most stores in NYC aren't carrying it.
"I ain't trying to dis, but I don't be trying to fuck with Limp Bizkit" - Mos Def
28384, THE WIZ HAS IT!!

I picked up my copy from the menlo park wiz in nj on the release date...it wasn't out on display so i asked for it and dude was like "oh yeah we have it, i just saw it" then he couldn't find it, so we went on a hunt, it was hidden a bit, but it was there...and i got it...and i love it...i love it...i love it...
my sister was like "have u heard the jazzyfatnastees before?" and i was like "no"...and she was like "that's some loyalty right there"...
"mind ya bidness!" -- kenan, kenan & kel
"shave it down, make me round!!" -- spongebob squarepants
Not to add to the histeria but I just went to the Virgin Megastore in Times Square (NYC) and had the exact same experience everyone else. No one seemed to know what in the hell I was talking about. Could there be a Jazzyfatnastees blackout in NYC? I hope not. We usually get the new stuff first. LA Report
From the San Fernenado Valley...Wharehouse records was distinctively unaware of who the Jazzys were...So I go into a Tower records and ask 3 employees there about the album...I felt a bit embarrassed that I couldn't remember the title of the record, but the group's name alone provoked looks of unknowing surprise...One cat checked the computer and said that they had 3 copies of it...So he checks the new releases carts that are parked around the store and finally finds it from somewhere in the depths of the back of the store...Copped it, but haven't been home to listen yet (No CD player in the car)
Rumble young man, Rumble, AAAAHHHHH!!!
---Drew "Bundini" Brown

28389, Jazzy's
Posted by guest, Tue Oct-26-99 01:03 PM
I went this morning to the Best Buy right by the house. After I shoot a flare to get somebody's attention, I tell the kid that Im looking for the Jazzyfatnastees album. Of course he looks at me like I don't have a shred of sanity left, but he looks up. It just so happens that some guy before me was looking for the Master P album, so the clerk looks up both our requests at once. Turns out they had just recieved their shipment of both albums. They had 3 Jazzy's (of which they had no idea where they were at) and 360(!) copies of Master P. I kid you not. That's how thing's go here in Miami.
Mo

I think each of the Best buy stores only ordered 3 cuz that's how many were there when I went last nite....so I copped mines and when I have more loot next week I'll pick up another as a present for someone.....the girl in the dept. (1nce I finally got her to help me) also could not find it at first but then I found it BURIED behind some Janet Jackson CD's.....

"Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong" -Dennis Miller

"It's funny how money change a situation..." -L Boogie

Conscious music is always fucked over in favor for the bullshit. That's why when it comes to new releases I really want, I try to get 'em early from legit stores (Mom & Pop operations mostly do this; on the low). When I went to FYE! (For Your Entertainment - A CD/Tape/Video/Accesories/Video Game Room/etc. store) to get the jazzies, I asked for them by name. This following conversation probably seems REAL familiar to a lot of you:
CUSTOMER: Excuse me, I'm looking for the CD for the Jazzyfatnastees?
RECORD STORE CLERK: The who?

(Nuffsaid...)
gB
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of rich players are making wack-ass music, that's the bottom line! - Talib Kweli
I listen with stylistic innocence as well as critical intelligence; I identify genres but ignore their limits... - Joshua Redman
Invest NO level of self into this system of PAGANomics... - BIG RUBE
Imsohardisoftenviagra... - $(#&%@^!*
Mofo's don't know how to think for themselves to know if shit is dope or not... - ?
For the artist who at his/her core just needs to be heard for the sake of his/her own sanity (and found some other way to feed his/her seeds): Staying underground is the only guarantee that he or she will be able to look in the mirror without feeling desperately ill. - Akiba Solomon ("Why Stay Underground", The Source Nov. 1999 Issue)

Got mine from Sam Goody in the village...they said they had a lot of people requesting it so they're pretty well stocked and it's right up in the front...If I'm not mistaken, J and R music world has it too.. and Random Access onn Lions ave in Irvington Nj has it, and so does Gret Tee's music on Ferry St in Newark Nj..
Hope that helped!
"Seven days without prayer makes one weak"

28394, Where to find good music in NYC
Posted by guest, Mon Nov-01-99 07:13 AM
Ok so I'm looking through the discussion and I'm seeing HMV and Tower and Virgin and I'm not remotely surprised that people are having no luck.
You want to get things you want and deal with people who know what they're talking about forget the big chains. Except for the Sam Goody in the Village, I've never found nice, knowledgable people at any of the big chains or superstores.
Check out:
Joe's and Norman's around St Mark's Place, Discorama by W. 4th and Union Sq.
record explosion on 34th, 42nd and b'way.
You get good service, good selections and a lot of times you get things early - I picked up Roots come alive this past weekend (I'm not tryin to get anyone in trouble though...).
I'm new here, but I had to put in my two cents.
28395, Good points , HOWEVER
Posted by Nesta, Mon Nov-01-99 08:21 AM
My point for the initial post was just to point out that there might be a problem with their distribution channels. You're points are definitely true.
NYC Music vets definitely know of the places you mention and the chains are not neccesarily the place to go diggin for good music. However, if a new artist is trying to break out, they need to be prominently displayed in these chains and the staff at these places need to know about their record. Most folks are gonna just walk into a big chain store to make their music purchases.
"Only when lions have historians will hunters cease to he heroes." - African Proverb

I decided to get up extra eary (I'm working a later shift than usual, so I usually sleep a little longer to alleviate the insomnia, but not today!) I take 10/15 minutes to wolf down my breakfast and cause the waitress to stare at me for finishing up my food before she even had the chance to re-fill my coffee cup! Hey, I wanna be one of the first in line to cop the CD's! No luck at The Wiz on B'way in the village, fuck 'em! They ain't shit when it comes to new albums anyway. Go up the block to the Tower Records on 4th & B'way, saw the Jazzies poster in the new albums section for at least 2 weeks...they don't have 'em either! WHADAFUCK?! Dude tells me to come back, it's kinda early "maybe the guy in charge of this area hasn't stocked the album yet" I wait 4/5 hours later...skip lunch and go to the HMV on 86th and Lex, no album, lotta blank stares when I ask for the JazzyFatNastees though! Fuck it, dude from Tower Rocords said to come back later, I decide to check the Wiz on 3rd & 86th St first, no luck and the sister behind the counter says she's never heard of the Jazzies!! Brain dead RnBS junkie! I Jett downtown, retrace my steps to the WIZ on B'way...NADA! I head back to Tower Records on 4th & B'way...no luck. Dude tells me that the album wasn't shipped...HOWinTHEhell?!! It's an CONspiracy I tell ya!! MCA doesn't want the Jazzies to do well I guess. They Had it at the HMV Megastore here in downtown montreal...it was in the new releases section, almost at the bottom, I almost didn't see it. I was gonna curse if I didn't find it cuz it's on their website. You can order it from them online, and supposedly the shipping is 24 hrs, but I don't know if that is only for canada or what not. But like I mentioned in my other post on this thread, with the Legendary, there was no promotion and there was no word of it. It came out here two weeks later, now I know it was an ep and not an album but still. Check out HMV.com and if you can't find it, maybe you could order it online, I think it's 13.99. But I don't know how this matters in sales, do they still count them in soundscan? I would think so.
Good luck and peace,

"You must have verbal diarrhea cuz all you do is talk shit." i should know because I work there, and i made damn sure it was on the new release rack. but you know what sucks? even though i told my boss about it, and she got the in store play copy (which i made sure got played today, and will be played at every opportunity) and she hooked me up with an advance copy, guess how many she ordered for the store? FIVE. that's it. and you know what else sucks? guess how many people bought the jazzyfatnastees cd before I left? ZERO. that's right. so some of y'all need to take a trip out to long island, and you can get your jazzys fix!
oh yeah, and one of my co-workers had the nerve to say that the album "sucked" and that the jazzies sound like "a drunken En Vogue". Yesterday I asked the man at sam goody would they have it, he said yes. This was at one mall in town, so I figure I go to the sam goody in the other mall and they would also have it right? wrong. Sam Goody in the other mall, "Im sorry sir...". Wherehouse Music in this same mall, nothing. So I head to the mall I was in yesterday, enter and look in the new releases section, nothing. NOW im pissed, because I was told it would be here. the story has a happy ending though because my boy headed to J in the r n b section and there it was, all 5 copies the store had. I copped 2. There better not even be 3 next week when I go to cop the live album. I heard the album about 2 months ago, but it sounds way better on cd. Congratulations on what is the best r n b album Ive heard all year.
