27901, bad roots songs
Posted by P_, Fri Dec-10-99 01:20 PM
(before i even start this post let me assure you that i've been here since june because i do like the roots, and i'm not hating. the roots represent every trip, and when tribe retired, they officially bacame one of my 3 favorite groups(next to outkast and the lox))<P>okay, weve been here and seen the favorite verse, favorite song, favorite beat, favorite video, and so on, but we all know that we dont love EVERY roots song out. lets build on the wack ones(now before you even start on "there is no wack roots song", lets all remember that this is the same site that has members that come to cyber-blows over what they think should/shouldn't be legally considered wack).<P>as for my favorite wack/not that good roots tracks:<BR>1)every proceed other than parts 2 3<P>2)i remain calm<P>3)it just dont stop<P>4)Clon.....just kidding<P>5)the TFA secret track<P>6)the next movement<P>other than that, i got they back.<BR>peace.<P>Y2P!<P>"I'm like the cast of belly, i dont know how to act..." -Method Man<BR>

I guess I'd say The Session(from organix) is my least favorite Roots song. Its not that its wack or anything, I just think the hook sounds corny. "have fun, have fun!" hehe, but at least ?uest rhymes on it.<P>"Handsome Boy Modelling School gave me the confidence to be a model, if it wasn't for them...I would still have 60 dollars."

there are a few I never really got. For example, Silent Treatment - ask most people, and it's one the best songs on DYWM?! But along with You Ain't Fly, it was one of the two songs on that album I never gave much time to. Same thing with No Alibi on Illadelph - according to some it's one of the best songs on that record, but it bored me. Off TFA I'd give the lukewarm award to Don't See Us. Ok, do we get our okay passes revoked for this?<P>"...one finger is in the air/ and one is in the chamber/ y'all ask me what the fuck i'm doing/ i'm releasing anger..." - Andre, OutKast, 1994

I know Silent Treatment is one of almost everyone's favrioute songs on DYWM. That's why I listed it. Same thing with No Alibi. I just never got them. Since I don't really dislike any Roots song, I just thought it was an interesting perspective to list some songs I didn't feel much that everyone else did. I don't know why Silent Treatment didn't do much for me. But I am in the minority, I know that.<P>"...one finger is in the air/ and one is in the chamber/ y'all ask me what the fuck i'm doing/ i'm releasing anger..." - Andre, OutKast, 1994

what the hell is up with that? they pretty much definitively suck, plus the fact that they're claiming allegiance to the Ruff Ryders camp now that bad boy has fallen.
27916, The Lox ended their contract with BadBoy a while ago
Posted by nahymsa, Mon Dec-13-99 06:02 AM
They were pushing for that from the beginning, right after their first single dropped (or atleast the album). This was prior to Bad Boy "falling off".
27917, yeah, but they still suck, hehe

27923, Roots w/ Bob Marley
Posted by sevencents, Sat Dec-11-99 02:49 PM
Maybe it's because I have so much love for both Bob and the Roots, that this track fell short of my expectations. I had certain issues with the Chant Down Babylon album to begin with, but I was looking forward to hearing the Roots track. After listening to it several times I still felt that it wasn't one of their weaker songs which is a shame since it is one that is played along with the great Bob Marley. I guess I was hoping for a more heartfelt song - I don't know, maybe I was expecting too much, but I know that the Roots have more heart and soul than what was displayed on that track. Just my opinion.<P>7cents<P>

What is the purpose to this topic? A Bad track for one person, could be butter for someone else. Opinions are all good but if you not feelin a track, push on! They put out to many classics to even try to disrespect. And for whoever wasn't feelin "no alibi" put on some got damm and listen again! You missin out on some brilliant lyrics. One L.

i LOVE that one. hell, even ?uest says its straight dope in the liner notes. but each to his/her own, i suppose. and i DID go back and listen to No Alibi again, and i now realize that it shouldn't be on my Worst List. but it still doesn't totally measure up. i don't know, to me, you need more than just dope lyrics to make a good track.
27929, I confess....

Alright there are prolly a handful outta all their joints....<P>- "What You Want" (no no no)<P>- "You Aint Fly" (only track on DYWM i really cant <BR>stand)<P>- "The Spark" (i love me some malik b, but that shit he does at the end annoys the shit outta me, and damn the joints that the Roots did with D always came out so hot ex. Hypnotic, and the notic, but the Spark was really a huge dissapointment)<P>- "Episodes" (too long and monotnous)<P>- "Dont See Us" (this is a track that really isnt bad, but it shouldnt of been on TFA or the Live album( imagine if The Lesson and then Nuthin New was after 100% dundee rmx instead of dont see us, i mean thats a track that you need mal and dice on to break the monotony, tyriq is the man, but that song is too long for one person to pull off.......damn the Lesson and Nuthin instead of Dont See Us, and disc one would be legendary....still damn good though sheeeiiitttt....lol)<P>- "100% Dundee.....(damn the rmx is the absolute effin shit, i wish that version was on TFA, oh well......)<P><P><BR>Thats really about it, for about 10 years of recording.......damn.........and i was bein critical too......<BR>One Love<BR>RamXL<BR>(b-boy advocate)<P><BR>"inside myself/self alarm is soundin/sayin we need to be better brown men/ its hard to do that!" Posted by dafriquan, Sat Dec-11-99 08:20 PM
I must admit I'm not feeling this song the same way I feel the Roots stuff. I'm feeling it the same way i would feel a Monica or Brandy. You know, just some ish on the radio that you wouldn't mind turning the volume down on if you were in the car and you had someonelse to talk to. (just too r&bish and those the echoed rhodes melody didn't fit) I heard it live on the chris rock show and it sounded better with a guitar doing the piano part.<BR>BESIDES that one song and video, everthing the Roots have dropped is butter! I'm not positive, but i don't think that track was even produced by the roots... i know you didn't mention that or anything... <P>It does sample tariq's verse and scott's keys, but i think it was just remixed by the dude who produced the original version.<P>I happen to love that d&b mix.... the bass and the whole groove hypnotizes me.<P><BR>(((krutch)))(((1999)))<P>"Lyrically calculus in this arithmetic hip hop metropolis" - black thought<P>"I'm hard as me tryin' to park a dodge, drunk as fuck..." - eminem

First of all, I'm hurt because Proceed and Remain Calm were my jams on DYWM, and no alibi is too, but anyways....<P>I have to speak out against every "love" song the roots have done (except "love of my life" for obvious reasons). they get initial play when I first get the album and skipped from week two on...<P>Silent treatment<BR>Hypnotic<BR>You got me<BR>What you need (didn't even need a week, i wasn't feelin it from first listen)<P>luckily, they avg one an album which can be easily overlooked.<P>I personally can take but so much r&b in my music (unless its slow jam time)<BR>the amount in "swept away" and "no great pretender" just about reaches my tolerance but is carried out so that the chorus doesn't rely on it (which is a plus)<P>besides those "it just dont stop" and "episodes" stopped getting heavy rotation a while ago<P>my $0.02<P>Choco B
27945, You skipped "Hypnotic?!??"

I PITY YOU....FOOLISH MORTAL!!!!<P>Seriously...the Roots tracks that went over my head were<P>1. No Great Pretender (Sorry, Malik...it wasn't you...it was the beat)<P>2. Without A Doubt (I never really dug Steady B's version)<P>That will do for now!<P>DVSJ

First off let me say I agree with the people who mentioned "the session" but I dont think it was meant to be a dope joint it was about making history as the longest posse cut in history. Now seeing as though alot of roots songs I have witnessed come together I hope Im not to biased. But my all time favorite roots song to hate is "The good, the bad,the desolated from the high school high soundtrack reason being it ws originally going to be a hot song with me and tariq ill admit it was a little to r&b for some of you hard core heads but it cold have been good for the time.Needless to say it wound up revamped as the hypnotic on illadlph halflife. But all of that aside I hated the idea of the a&r of the soundtrack calling us on the phone in the studio telling us the song we had submitted was not cutting it and we should smoke some more weed.Which is probably what happened and I just hated the reggae chanter he was down with the fugees and the roots were practically at war with them at the time.Thats the history sorry this turned out so long it was really no way to shorten it.Some may think im just bitter which i may be to some degree, but the roots have put me on many a song for which i am eternally grateful and of course this is not meant to bite the hand that feeds you especially when i took home a gold record from the high school high soundtrack but I just hate that song in a nutshell.well what do I know listen back for yourselves P.s the roots cover of the show by slick rick and dougie fresh it was great in the live show but it just didnt translate well on tape.Fatin
