27546, Resurrection vs. Illmatic

Aight fells what was better the Common Classic or the Nas Prodigy?
(by the way I think Ressurection takes it)
27547, ILLmatic.

If Resurrection where better then illmatic, people woulda been crying foul at "Retrospect". But when someone makes an album like illmatic first time out... well.. Its never happened before. It hasnt happened since. Resurrections good, but Illmatic is for the children!

oneLOVE.
OkayBoricua known as... Understand, Com Sense is my favorite MC, but this is my favorie album. I was like 13 or 14 when this dropped and prior to this album I payed little attention to what was said in a song. Lyrically, and for a debut, this is off the chain! It changed how I listen to hip-hop, "The Chronic" is the only other album that can really say that because before I got it I didn't listen to hip-hop. "Ressurection" and "One Day..." opened me up to a different style of hip-hop, though, I'll give it that, and it is a classic, but it isn't better than "Illmatic".
peace
"I never sleep, cause sleep is the cousin of death"-Nasty Nas
"I got a rhyme and you got a rhyme/but my rhyme is better than yours"-Com Sense
27549, sorry dude
Posted by taktiks, Thu Feb-03-00 01:58 PM
common is one of my favorite artist, but illmatic was flawless. not saying that ressurection isn't up to par, but when you put producers like that all together with a dope ass mc, there's not to many albums that even come close.

"fuck this rap shit I listen to classical"---Baatin of Slum Village
"cause who i'm talking bout y'all is HIP-HOP"---Common Sense
"i'm morpheus in this hip hop matrix, exposing fake shit"---Common Sense
27550, I prefer Resurrection
Posted by guest, Thu Feb-03-00 02:24 PM
I like Resurrection better, but I think that Illmatic was a better album. Has anyone ever noticed the similarities between The Infamous and Illmatic? To me they are very similar. I like The Infamous better, although I think my view is biased against Nas due to what he has become lately.
"you have to give these dumb motherfuckers what they want to hear" Ras Kass
27551, yeh! he did sell out, but.....
Posted by taktiks, Thu Feb-03-00 02:42 PM
you can't ignore the fact that he was a part of one of the greatest hip hop albums ever put together. i feel what your saying because it still hurts when i listen to illmatic and think what this mc could have become.

"fuck this rap shit I listen to classical"---Baatin of Slum Village
"cause who i'm talking bout y'all is HIP-HOP"---Common Sense
"i'm morpheus in this hip hop matrix, exposing fake shit"---Common Sense
27552, hard to be unbiased
Posted by guest, Thu Feb-03-00 08:57 PM
C'mon now, it's hard not to judge something he has done without thinking of the trash he puts out today and being angry at him. It is one of the best, and what I was trying to say but did not say clearly enough was that I think it's better than Resurrection, but my favorite of the two is Resurrection. I also think Illmatic was better than Infamous but I prefer to listen to Infamous.
"You gotta tell these dumb motherfuckers what they want to hear" Ras Kass
27553, Gotta go with Common
Posted by Haxwell, Thu Feb-03-00 02:50 PM
Resurrection was just the shit to me.. Both of them (Res and Illmatic) were classics, no doubt, but I got soo much more out of Resurection. I Used To Love H.E.R. (did we ever find out what that stood for?) was tight, but for a grip after I first got that album, I was hearing new meaning in Common's lyrics.. I just loved da hell out that album.
Hax.
"Why have a siggie twice the size of your post?" - me.

...has got ot go to illmatic. It is in my opinon the best album of all time!! Like some of the other fam has said, resurection is great but illmatic is flawless, the blueprint for a classic album. Damn, illmatic is still hot to def 7-8 years after it dropped. Illmatic hands down!! Sorry Com!!!
R.I.P. - MLR "Doggs 4 life"
"crack mothers, crack babies and AIDS patients/youngbloods cant spell but they can rock u in playstation." -Mighty Mos Def
"Returning violence for violence multiplies violence adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars." 27556, Not To Diss Resurection, But, The Way I See It
Posted by guest, Thu Feb-03-00 04:12 PM
One Time For Your Mind is the "weakest" track on Illmatic. I've always felt like Watermelon is the best track on Reseruction. But I like One Time For Your Mind more than I like Watermelon. Or I Used To Love Her or Sum Shit I Wrote. And I can't even compare those songs to NY State Of Mind or Memory Lane. I don't know how the two can be compared. I can name dozens of albums better than Resurection. I can name only a couple better than Illmatic. They both came out in 94. What do I think was better than Illmatic in 94? Nothing. Better than Resuection? Illmatic, Ready To Die, Southernplayalisticadicalmuzik, Do You Want More, Stress: The Extinction Agenda, The Sun Rises In The East. Fuck it, The Beatnuts album. Not dissing Resurection, but I don't see the comparison. In lyrics, let alone production. (No diss to No ID either, but that's really far-fetched.)
"...one finger is in the air/ and one is in the chamber/ y'all ask me what the fuck i'm doing/ i'm releasing anger..." - Andre, OutKast, 1994
27557, Illmatic

In my opinion Illmatic and Resurrection are the two best albums of all time. However Illmatic is an album where everything is perfect, and even though it's kinda short, every song on it is unbelievably amazing. Resurrection is amazing as well but nothing can eff with Nasty Nas and his lineup of producers. From start to finish, Illmatic is a perfect example of how an album should be done.
27558, Common 4 sure....
Posted by crazydave69, Thu Feb-03-00 06:33 PM
I will have to side with Common, due to Nas's Lack of consistency... Common is the ish and so was nas back then, but his new ish just blows...
"May the Force Be With You!" OBi-Wan Kenobi
Crazy
27559, it's about then not now
Posted by taktiks, Thu Feb-03-00 07:14 PM
this is not a comparison about who's better NOW! it's about which album was better. don't hold what nas is like (pardon the pun) now. take him for what he was back in 94'. i'm not trying to defend nas either because he broke his true fans hearts with his new material.

"fuck this rap shit I listen to classical"---Baatin of Slum Village
"cause who i'm talking bout y'all is HIP-HOP"---Common Sense
"i'm morpheus in this hip hop matrix, exposing fake shit"---Common Sense
27560, i understand that...
Posted by crazydave69, Fri Feb-04-00 07:08 AM
But that still doesn't sway my opinion, either way they are both classic albums, but i really don't dig nas that much.. His stuff was good but res was much better... I like the producers on illmatic but i don't really like nas's subject matter.. he talks too much shit for me...

"May the Force Be With You!" OBi-Wan Kenobi
Crazy
27561, not sure, hard decision
Posted by atruhead, Fri Feb-04-00 07:29 AM
This is a toss up for a few reasons
1) When illmatic dropped, that was it, here he was, rakims successor, the hip-hop nation knew it. It took cuts like U.N.I. verse at war, the bizness, the bitch in yoo for people outside of chicago to recognize com. I copped resurrection in summer 98 and its been a favorite of mine ever since, I rarely even spin illmatic anymore and if I do it will just be a choice cut or two.
2) Both gifted lyricists, lets look at how they blew. Nas caters to the hardcore thugs, big willy wanna bes, and those looking for good lyrics, nas escobar was still nice just his beats became wack. blame steve stoute/trackmasters. Com became big with the ladies (evidenced by the summer 99 wetlands jam session) after "the abortion" jawn. Me myself it took hearing real nigga quotes on future flavas to go out n cop "one day", and that was what woke me up.
Anyway my point is being that cats were up on illmatic from jump of course its fair to say that its better, beats WAY better, but com came with it lyrically, my grandkids are gonna be coming to me catching slick things off this album that I didnt get (not really since I have almost every song printed out), but I can tell more thought was put into resurrection than just "aight im gonna scribble down the best thug shit, get some bangin beats and the pj's will love it" both albums are excellent but I think com gets my vote for witticism, introspection, and lyrical presence that the world slept on until about 97"

"Intellectual property I got the title and the deed, I pay rent with the tears and sweat and what I bleed"- Talib Kweli
"You got hamburger beef I'll french fry ya cause drag done ate your food"- Drag-On
27562, Common's the man
Posted by guest, Mon Feb-07-00 05:53 AM
Ressurection takes it but illmatic is fantastic album to.The beats are good om illmatic but nas as a raper i cant stand.Common is a much better raper, a true poet.
27563, Illmatic
Posted by guest, Fri Feb-04-00 09:04 AM
Obviosuly I like Common better now. But as far as albums...Illmatic at the time was the shiznit.
27564, Even though Resurrection

was my album and it was good and Illmatic was outstanding, neither one compares to Like Water For Chocolate.
Com Cast
27565, better than resurrection?

saying your next album is better than illmatic is either a whole lot of confidence or some ingenious pre-album hype.
but i hope you're right. i need some good shit to listen to so i can stop rocking illmatic every damn day.

"if you breathe the same air that i do, you know that you could go for months or even years without hearing the blessed sounds of a kick-snare or looped ayers xylophone and still have hiphop circulating relentlessly within you. it's almost intrinsic by now..."

i'm not doubting that this album's gonna be special. but i think TFA was brilliant and yet i STILL like illmatic better. i mean, you could change the world on this but it might not top illmatic. we'll see though, after all, it's not out yet.
http://www.thehungersite.com<;/a>
"I ain't no goddamn son of a bitch--you'd better think about it, baby!"
--Glenn Danzig (Misfits)
"Where the F*CK is my purse icon??????"

illmatic is more than a classic, it's like a...i can't even explain the greatness which it holds...too bad i can't speak the same for the author of it's profound lyricism (could i have used these two words together if i had never heard anyone else say it?)...hmmmm
peace

we had a great debate about this on my website a while ago.. same exact topic: Resurrection v. Illmatic. Come check out our points and respond.
www.angelfire.com/ca2/mystic<;BR>by the way, I argued for Resurrection and this guy SF Intellect argued for Illmatic.
I a Common fan before a Nas fan, but Illmatic was the illest.Ressurection was also ill classic material.Hell, Id be satisfied if "Like water for chocolate was better then one day it will all make sense", which was also outstanding.I just hope I feel the same way about Com's LP once I hear it.Hip Hop has been way too long without a true 5 mics classic album. If anyone has what it takes to do it,It's Common.
Peace!
