26367, "Am I the Only One?"
Posted by guest, Mon Mar-06-00 09:09 AM
Aiight, I've been logging onto okayplayer for about five months now, and I've been reading a lot of the stuff on here and my question is am I the only one? What I mean by that is Ahmir let's A LOT of ill shit come out of his mouth. I understand like most people should, is everyone has their own opinion and that's all this post is my opinion. Ahmir said in the D'Angelo tour gossip something about it was 40 cats to everyone shorty in some club and he knew it would be all these cats talking about "oh shit the roots I love ya'll shit" and he didn't feel like it. I can feel you on that, sometimes you just don't want people in your face but guess what? You're in the limelight, and that's what comes with the territory. If you're a student you're gonna have to do some studying, of course sometimes you're not going to feel like it, but you don't complain about it TO the teacher! It's like he's complaining about the fans, to the fans! Damn! Now, wait a minute I thought that's what artist want from fans but maybe I'm wrong. I'm from philly so I've seen the Roots grow from South street to the Grammy stage but damn, it just seems like Ahmir's head just keeps getting bigger with every new accomplishment. Platinum with Thing Falls Apart, Ahmir's head...a little bigger. A Grammy for Erykah Badu's album...a little bit bigger. And now with their own grammy...it's off the rocker. Now maybe it's just me, and that's why I'm asking, am I the only one? I thought Quest would want to hear how much people love the roots. Like I said I'm from the crib and now reside in Baltimore working at WEAA and produce Morgan State's hip hop show so I see the industry from every standpoint. Being a fan of hip hop, being behind the scenes, working for different labels, and being a producer but when I'm home for the most part, niggaz CAN'T STAND THE ROOTS!!! They want to hear Beanie or Eve. And I've read the the Roots really don't like performing in Philly because they don't get a lot of love. Now I'll be the first to admit that SOME Philly people have NO respect for hip hop as an art, but I just feel like you should show love to your fans that's all. Now about the Com album, I've got the advance, not the unmastered bootleg of "Like Water For Chocolate" and it's aiight. Not Com's best 74 minutes committed to tape by no means. I'd rather here "One Day", then "Resurrection" then "Like Water..." and then "Can I...", but then again that's just my humble opinion. I just feel the Soulquarians and Primo didn't come with it. No ID and Ynot(again in my opinion) is definitely missed on this project It's funny, it's like artist decide to put up their opinions and us the fans (or the peons) are just supposed to accept it, but let one of us post something and instead of politicing with us or building with us we get posts like "I'm sick of defending my shit it's 3am just buy the album!"! I mean, what's really the difference between the artist and the fans? In most aspects of this biz, the fans have more money than the rappers do, but they 're the ones with the big heads?!?! The fans MAKE these artist. If it wasn't for us, no one would buy the cd's. You wouldn't even ship platinum because the fans wouldn't be requesting it at the record stores. Seems assed backwards to me. That's what bugs me out. I would think the okay family would be more down to earth but I guess I was wrong. And the Tip review, is it ok if an album is made without Ahmir's involvement? Just asking but am I the only one? And if anyone would like to respond I would LOVE to hear back but let's build together, aiight? One.
