an artist definitely should get what they deserve. You're right, a big chunk of the percentage points go to the labels and other "industry" folks, but do you really know how the industry works?
Labels exist because THEY WORK. I'm all for grassroots, but if you want to distribute to a huge network of retailers across this big wide nation, and if you want to market yourself out there, major labels are the outlet. You think Com would have an ad in the Source if he was pushing his product outta his trunk, so to speak?
I believe you can be an outstanding artist, or you can be an outstanding businessperson, but you cannot do both. Requires different brain processes, and if you try to one the other suffers. Case in point, see: Prince (he went "underground" to questionable commercial success), Hieroglypics (3rd Eye vision shoulda blew up), even in other industries, Donna Karan was a good designer but she had poor business sense. you dig?
Besides if you want to just download the shit, make a copy of the credits... damn, the time you spend actually doing this you could be doing something productive to EARN $$ to buy the CD. Your heart's in the right place Broke, but see the big picture.
